BG3 Best Builds (Patch 8) – 2026
1. Sorcadin Build – Sorcerer / Paladin (Best Overall)

The Sorcerer Paladin combination is the best build in Baldur’s Gate 3 because it combines high melee damage, incredible spellcasting, and high charisma perfect for main character engaging in dialogue. The build starts off fast, and progresses quickly through every level and Act of BG3 as a powerhouse, using metamagic for manipulating spells, Divine Smites in melee for huge burst damage, and increase weapon and armor proficiency with the Paladin Multiclass.

Your role is that off an AOE nuker with your spells, and melee damage dealer with Booming Blade Cantrip, combined with Shadow Blade spell (summons item in your hand), and Divine Smite. These three bonuses stack, to create some of the highest burst damage imaginable. Better yet, after Act 2, you can get a the Resonance Stone that doubles your Psychic damage!

Whether it’s spellcasting, melee blasting, or winning speech checks, nothing beats the Sorcadin in BG3 because of it’s versatility, raw power, and fun factor.
Sorcerer Paladin Character Creation
| Choice | Selection |
|---|---|
| Character | Origin – Dark Urge |
| Race | Half-Orc |
| Class | 6 Paladin, 6 Sorcerer |
| Subclass | Oath of Vengeance, Shadow Magic |
| Background | Entertainer |
| Ability Score | STR: 8 DEX: 16 CON: 14 INT: 8 WIS: 10 CHA: 17 |
| Skill Proficiencies | Athletics, Persuasion |

The key choice to make in Character Creation is your Race. The Orc is best if you’re going for the melee Shadow Blade setup. That’s because of the Savage Attacks bonus: When they score a critical hit with a melee weapon attack, they can roll one of the weapon’s damage dice one additional time and add it to the extra damage of the critical hit. Savage Attacks, also stacks with Savage Attacker (feat): When making melee weapon attacks, you roll your damage dice twice and use the highest result. The result is absolutely mind-blowing critical damage, especially when you reduce the number you need for a critical with gear. We take Oath of Vengeance here because it focuses on mobility and damage. Oath of Devotion is stronger for early game melee damage, but this setup scales better through the Vengeance route.
The second most important choice in character creation is your ability score, specifically going with one odd number. Odd numbers don’t give you a +1, only even. But, with Auntie Ethel’s bonus in Act 1, you can even the number out, and hit very high Charisma scores. Only do this if you plan on completing this side quest in Act 1 and consuming her hair for a permanent plus one to Charisma.
Sorcadin Build Overview (How it Works)
- Class: 6 Sorcerer, 6 Paladin
- Subclass: Shadow Magic and Oath of Vengeance
- Background: Entertainer
- Skills: Athletics, Persuasion
- Ability Score
- Strength: 8
- Dexterity: 16
- Constitution: 14
- Intelligence: 8
- Wisdom: 10
- Charisma: 17
- Saving Throw: Strength and Charisma
- Armour Proficiency: Light Armour, Medium Armour, Heavy Armour, and Shield
- Weapon Proficiency: Simple Weapons and Martial Weapons

The key to the build is starting off as one level in Paladin. This unlocks all the weapons and armor immediately, and some extra utility. This will be helpful early on for protection and gear options. Specifically, shield proficiency. Since Shadow Blade is your main weapon, and it’s one-handed, you can get extra AC and bonuses by equipping a shield. Critical for optimal survival! Then you multiclass to gain six levels of Sorcerer. Use your Sorcerer levels to unlock Metamagic, Shadow Blade, and Booming Blade.

Cast Shadow Blade out of combat and use the highest spell slot to scale the weapon’s damage, and Booming Blade cantrip on your melee attack for extra thunder damage. Lastly, make sure to turn on Divine Smite alerts in your UI, so you can choose to use a spell slot for extra burst. Don’t waste spell slots early when an enemy isn’t worth blasting.

Since Shadow Blade scales in effectiveness with Strength or Dexterity, you can either increase your DEX with Ability Score Improvements (ASI) or use an elixir or Hill Giant Strength. This ensures the highest damage possible with your Shadow Blade.

Starting at level 1 with Paladin gives you better survivability choices early on due to extra weapon and armor proficiencies (shield + Shadow Blade). Then, at level 2, make sure to get Chromatic Orb and Twinned Spell Metamagic at level 3. Your main combo early is Orb with Twinned, specifically Ice to knock enemies prone. Since you get to split orb into two, you can crowd control large groups of enemies and still hit for good damage.

Make sure you take Shadow Blade at level 4 (level 2 spell) and drop Thunderwave for another spell like Invisibility or Enlarge. Cast Shadow Blade after ever long rest. Your goal is to be invisible when you attack, specifically Lightly or Heavily Obscured. This can be done by casting Darkness on top of yourself.
At level 1, the Shadow Magic Sorcerer gets Eyes of the Dark allowing them to see in the Dark up to 24 meters. At level 3, you gain a free Darkness spell. Therefore, you drop a cloud of Darkness on yourself and get the Advantage bonus from Shadow Blade. Every creature that comes into the cloud suffers from Blind, which reduces range attacks and spells to three meters. Forcing everyone to you, with high AC due to medium armor, 16 Dex and a Shield, you be nearly impossible to hit.

Once you unlock Fireball at level 6, you can now double cast Fireball on turn one with Quickened Metamagic. This is your go-to turn one nuke if you’re out of melee range for a Shadow Blade Attack. From here, the build swaps to Paladin mainly to gain Divine Smite. This adds extra damage when you do melee attacks, and stacks on top of Booming Blade Cantrip and our Shadow Magic / Shadow Blade trick. Giving you both a melee, range option for dealing with any enemy.
One note, Psychic damage does not work on Constructs. This will be the only weakness to the build. In these fights, focus more on spellcasting within your Darkness Cloud. Chromatic Orb, Fireball, etc, vs. melee attacks.
Sorcadin Best Gear

- Deathstalker Mantle: obtained through accepting Dark Urge Origin Character at character creation, giving in Act 1. This cloak is like a cheat code. You gain Invisible for two turns after killing an enemy. Yes, you have to play an “evil” character, but if your goal is completing Honour Mode, the amount of survivability gained is incredible. Plus, with Shadow Blade, you’ll gain advantage attacking from Invis, and it makes solo fights 10x easier.
- Strange Conduit Ring: obtained in Act 1, at the Inquisitor’s Chamber in Githyanki Creche, the Strange Conduit Ring gives extra 1d4 Psychic damage while holding concentration. Since we intend to get the Resonance Stone, you can double this bonus after Act 2. Shadow Blade doesn’t require concentration, but concentration spells like Darkness, Invisibility, and Blur do. Therefore, you always look to have one concentration spell active (Oath of Veng Hunter’s Mark later in the game). Stock up on Scrolls if you don’t have a specific spell and pre-cast Blur before combat to activate this bonus, it will help!
- Range Weapon: do not sleep on equipping a ranged bow! Yes, it sounds dumb, you won’t ever use it but simply having it equip provides bonuses. In Act 1, the Bow of Awareness bought from Roah Moonglow in Shater Sanctum gives you a +1 Initiative. With a 16 DEX score, this plus one gives you a huge advantage going earlier in combat. In Act 3, get the Hell Riders Bow which gives a massive +3. Take to Ferg in Rivington without Shadowheart and you won’t regret it.
- Dark Justiciar Half-Plate: if you go full bad guy with Dark Urge, might as will get the Very Rare Dark Justiciar Half-Plate. This is medium armor and grants a ton of bonuses. The best is casting a version of Shield of Faith which reduces damage by 2, reflect Necrotic damage and triggers the concentration bonus needed for Strange Conduit Ring.
- Killer’s Sweetheart: Act 2 make sure to get Killer’s Sweetheart from Gauntlet of Shar which grants an Auto Critical after you kill an enemy. The combat loop with this one is, (dark urge characters), kill a weak target to go Invisible via Deathstalker Mantle, then attack a high HP target for an auto critical. Divine Smite, Booming Blade, Critical with Savage Attacker, boom.
- Resonance Stone: critical to the build! At the end of Act 2, in the Mind Flayer Colony, there is a Mind-Archive Interface. In this, you can grab the Resonance Stone. It grants the Stepped in Bliss bonus, anyone within 9 meters of it, becomes vulnerable to Psychic damage (double = vulnerable). All you have to do to activate this bonus is, keep it on your person! Some players throw it pre-fight, but regardless, this will double your Shadow Blade and anything else with Psychic damage except for constructs.

2. Giant Barbarian Build (Throw King)

Next up: The Giant Barbarian Build. The Barbarian is known for throwing objects like weapons and items because of the Tavern Brawler feat and the Giant subclass introduced in Patch 8. The Path of the Giants subclass grants the Giant’s Rage, which is a unique form of rage that doubles Throw Attack damage. Combined with Tavern Brawler, which adds your Strength Modifier to your attack roll on throw attacks, you do an incredible amount of damage at range.

The reason the Giant Barbarian is the second best build in BG3 currently is, it can solo honour mode, provide incredible damage at both range and melee while having super high health and survivability. You aren’t super dependent on gear either since the Barbarian can wear clothing due to Unarmour Defence and add their Constitution Modifier to AC. Thus, you get huge stats, massive AC, and big damage at any range.
The downside to this build over the Sorcadin is lower Charisma. For players who want to pass every dialogue check, it’s best to use another character or play a Charisma base build. And the lack of spellcasting can be a bummer especially if playing solo or a martial heavy team. Outside of that, you can make an argument the Throw Barbarian is the strongest combat build in BG3 and below is how you set it up!
Giant Barbarian Character Creation
| Choice | Selection |
|---|---|
| Character | Tav (Non-Evil) Dark Urge (Evil) |
| Race | Duergar Dwarf Githyanki (Mobility) Zariel Tiefling (Balanced) |
| Classes | 6x Barbarian 4x Rogue 2x Fighter |
| Subclass | Path of the Giants Thief |
| Background | Soldier (Tav) The Haunted One (Dark Urge) |
| Ability Score | STR: 17 DEX: 16 CON: 15 INT: 8 WIS: 8 CHA: 8 |
| Skill | Perception, Animal Handling |

The most important decisions for character creation is Origin Character and Race. Dark Urge provides an incredible benefit via the Death Stalker Mantle (explained in Sorcadin section), but it locks you into a “evil” storyline. When it comes to Race choices, the Duergar Dwarf is the best. While it’s movement speed is week, you gain access to Enlarge and Invisibility spells. Enlarge specifically increase your size and adds 1d4 more damage. This does work with Thrown Weapons, and helps with Strength checks overall. Plus you get superior Darkvision.
Normally Half-Orc would be selected for Savage Attacks, but the bonus doesn’t apply to thrown weapons sadly. It’s still a strong choice for the 1 HP after you get downed bonus and others. Consider Githyanki a good option too for great mobility. Dwarf Duergar is the logical choice for two additional spells including Enlarge.

Next, when you go to pick ability score, have two on odd numbers if you intend to take Tavern Brawler at level 4 (plus 1 to CON), and Auntie Ethel Hair before ending Act 1 (plus 1 to STR). This will get you two even number bonuses and super high stats across the board but you must be familiar with annoying Auntie Ethel Hair fight (Magic Missile is your friend).
Giant Barbarian Build Overview (How it Works)
- Class: Barbarian, Rogue, Fighter
- Subclass: Path of Giants, Thief
- Background: The Haunted One (or Solider)
- Skills: Perception, Animal Handling
- Ability Score
- Strength: 17
- Dexterity: 16
- Constitution: 15
- Intelligence: 8
- Wisdom: 8
- Charisma: 8
- Saving Throw: Strength and Dexterity
- Armour Proficiency: Light Armour, Medium Armour, Shield
- Weapon Proficiency: Martial and Simple

The most important mechanic to understand for this build is Throw Weapon. You use an action to throw an item (or even a creature) that scales damage based on your Strength ability score. While this is weak at first, once you get Tavern Brawler at level 4 and the right weapons, you double the damage. Moreover, some weapons have the return feature which will automatically return to you in your hand. Therefore, you don’t have to keep spamming spears and buying them from shops.

Next is Giant’s Rage, which is your bonus action and used in combat, typically on turn one. This grants you double throw damage but requires you to stay aggressive and attack (unlocked at level 3 with subclass). The best part of the Giant’s Subclass is the Elemental Cleaver bonus at level 8. While in Rage, you gain an additional elemental damage of your choice and gain the Thrown property to any weapon. Therefore, when you throw the weapon, it will automatically return to your hand!

This bonus gives weapons the same properties as Returning Pike, Nyrulna, and Lightning Jabber plus extra elemental damage! While those weapons are great to throw, you can really min-max your weapon throwing combinations even throwing the mighty Balduran’s Gianslayer at end-game!
How to Max Damage
- Elemental Cleaver (Lvl 6): Choose Lightning. This adds 1d6 elemental damage and makes it return.
- Wet Status: Apply Wet to enemies (via water bottles, spells) for 100% vulnerability to Cold/Lightning.
- Tavern Brawler: Adds double your Strength modifier to attack and damage rolls for thrown weapons.
- Ring of Flinging: Adds +1d4 damage to thrown attacks.
- Elixir of Hill Giant Strength: Sets Strength to 21 for huge damage boosts (or better version for 27 str).
Giant Barbarian Build Leveling Guide
| Level | Class | Selection |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Barbarian | Unarmored Defense, Rage |
| 2 | Barbarian | Reckless Attack, Danger Sense |
| 3 | Barbarian | Subclass: Giant, Giant’s Rage, Thaumaturgy |
| 4 | Barbarian | Feat: Tavern Brawler |
| 5 | Barbarian | Boot of the Giants |
| 6 | Barbarian | Elemental Cleaver |
| 7 | Rogue | Skill Expertise |
| 8 | Rogue | Cunning Actions |
| 9 | Rogue | Subclass: Thief |
| 10 | Rogue | Feat: +2 Strength or Savage Attacker + Elixir |
| 11 | Fighter | Fighting Style: Defense |
| 12 | Fighter | Action Surge |
Expect a slow start until you get Tavern Brawler at level 4. Your priority is to do easy side quest and dialogue actions to increase your level to four before taking out tough Githyanki fights later in Act 1. The Underdark is a great source of gear specifically designed for the Barbarian.
At lower levels, you primarily want to use your bonus action for Rage, then an action with Reckless Attack. At level three, you get a subclass and your throws will double in damage. At level four, get Tavern Brawler and you’ll start melting targets with Throw. You can get Returning Pike super early at Gnat the Trader in the Goblin Camp and combine it with Ring of Flinging from the same Trader. Look to have this setup by level 3 for a massive boost in damage.
As you hit end-game, level five you gain Extra Attack, attacking twice with one action. You will also gain Boot of the Giants, allowing you to kick a target with a bonus action. Therefore, your bonus action should be used nearly every turn to either enter Rage, kick an enemy off a ledge, or use a consumable like oil, elixir, etc.

Multiclass to the Rogue after level 6 where you get Elemental Clever. Four levels in Rogue will give you an extra bonus action per turn perfect for using Kick every turn (even multiple times). Lastly, swap to Fighter for two levels to get an extra Fighting Style and Action Surge. Now, your first turn you can use two actions, two bonus actions and likely wipe a team before they can even react.
Giant Barbarian Best Gear

Weapons: your primary goal is to get weapons that have the Thrown Property, and beyond level six, experiment with other weapons once you have Elemental Cleaver. First choice is Returning Pike purchased from Gnat the Trader. In Act 2, the Lightning Jabber combined with Lightning damage via Elemental Clever obtained from Reithwin Town (North East of Grand Mausoleum). Lastly Nyrulna Circus of the Last Days Akabi NPC. You can also use Balduran’s Giantslayer which can be annoying to get, but a good end-game choice.
Extra Throw Damage: there are two sources of extra throw damage from gear, both in Act 1. Gloves of Uninhibited Kushigo: Quest reward from Derryth Bonecloak in Ebonlake Grotto. Ring of Flinging: Bought from Aaron in Emerald Grove.

HUGE DAMAGE: if you want the ultimate in damage, go “bad” and become the Unholy Assassin to Bhaal to get Bhaalist Armour. This will double your piercing damage if a target is nearby. The Nyrulna weapon happens to be piercing, thus if you throw it up close, you will double your damage and one-shot most creatures.
Craterflesh Gloves + Sarevok’s Horned Helmet: another Act 3 combo is getting the gloves from same place you get Bhaalist Armour, Murder Tribunal. This grants extra force damage on a critical hit. Any extra damage can trigger this extra damage including Elemental Cleaver Lightning damage. Get Sarevok’s Horned Helmet for easier critical hits to make the proc easier.

3. Gloomstalker Ranger Build (Best Solo Ranged)

Next up is the Gloomstalker Ranger build! If you love playing solo and want easy mode, go with the Ranger build multiclassed into Rogue, Fighter, Ranger for the ultimate turn one killer. The strength of this build with the multiclass selection is turn one extra bonuses via Gloom Stalker and Rogue Assassin subclass. Plus, you throw in Champion for easier critical hits, and you devastate a team turn-one before they can even attack.
The assassin rogue subclass synergizes exceptionally well with the Gloomstalker build, enabling devastating surprise attacks and frequent critical hits at the start of combat.

Another advantage of this build is some spellcasting, which the Barbarian lacks. While you won’t get top-of-the-line level 5 spells, enough to give you extra utility, help outside of combat, and a fun factor. Plus, the game is loaded with amazing gear sets starting at level 1 and elemental arrows.

These arrows specifically add extra damage and help the Ranger make up for what it lacks: AOE. With Arrow of Many Targets (appearing around level 6), you can tag multiple enemies in one action. At level 9, you start seeing Smokepowder Arrows, which deals force and fire damage. These two arrows give you ranged AOE damage, perfect to make up for the lack of it built into your kit.
What’s the downside? If you mess up turn one, or don’t trigger the surprise status effect, you can be in trouble. This can happen during specific quest where combat starts through dialogue and you cannot innate at range with an arrow attack. If you’re a seasoned player, you buff up, then attack while stealth to get Surprise and wipe the team because you get an extra turn. If you’re not, and it’s your first time playing, you are likely to get caught off guard and waste those turn one bonuses.
Gloom Stalker Ranger Build Character Creation
| Choice | Selection |
|---|---|
| Character | Dark Urge (Evil) Tav (Non-Evil) |
| Race | Wood Elf (Best) Githyanki (Mobility) High Half-Elf (Spell-Caster) Asmodeus Tiefling (Balanced) |
| Class | 5 Ranger 4 Rogue 3 Fighter |
| Subclass | Gloom Stalker Assassin Champion |
| Background | Dark Urge (Evil) Urchin (Tav) |
| Ability Score | STR: 8 DEX: 17 CON: 16 INT: 8 WIS: 14 CHA: 10 |
| Skill | Athletics, Animal Handling, Survival |

Character creation is similar to other builds in that you get an Overpowered item in Deathstalker Mantle cape if you go Dark Urge origin. This is almost mandatory if you’re trying a solo honour mode run. Wood Elf Race is typically chosen because of the Stealth proficiency and extra 1.5 movement per turn. However, don’t sleep of Githyanki because you get Misty Step spell and other helpful utility.
Lastly, land on 17 DEX if you plan on doing Auntie Ethel’s Hair side quest for a +1 bonus. 16 CON for high survivability with 14 WIS for excellent skill bonuses while exploring.
Gloom Stalker Ranger Build Overview
- Class: Ranger, Rogue, Fighter
- Subclass: Gloom Stalker, Assassin, Champion
- Background: The Haunted One (Dark Urge)
- Skills: Athletics, Animal Handling, Survival
- Ability Score
- Strength: 8
- Dexterity: 17
- Constitution: 16
- Intelligence: 8
- Wisdom: 14
- Charisma: 10
- Saving Throw: Strength, Dexterity
- Armour Proficiency: Light Armour, Medium Armour, Shields
- Weapon Proficiency: Simple Weapons, Martial Weapons

The three class and subclass combo is used for one particular reason, to destroy the enemy before they can attack once. The first mechanic to understand is Surprise: When one side of a combat encounter is unaware of the other side. A surprised creature cannot take any Actions or Reactions for one combat round. This is triggered by approaching an enemy in stealth and hitting them with an attack.
The first turn when enemies are surprised is called the surprise round, which allows for guaranteed or increased critical hits and is strategically important for powerful opening moves. Once they are surprised, you get one free round of damage, before resetting to normal initiative rolls.
Your turn one combo is based on Gloom Stalker primarily: Dread Ambusher extra attack on first turn. You also gain +3 bonus initiative and extra movement speed on turn one plus 1d8 extra damage. Therefore, you should unload on the highest threat target turn one.
The Assassin subclass helps because of the Assassinate Ambush which grants criticals any attack roll against a surprised creature. Plus, you get Initiative, advantage on attack rolls for enemies who haven’t taken a turn yet. You must focus on surprise status effect when you can because of this reason, you will absolutely melt every target turn one.

Champion Fighter is taken mainly for Action Surge at level 2, and then improved critical hits which reduces number needed for a critical by 1. This just gives you extra burst when you don’t trigger surprise or combat last longer than a turn.
Gloom Stalker Ranger Build Leveling Guide
| Level | Class | Selection |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ranger | Wasteland Wanderer: Fire Bounty Hunter |
| 2 | Ranger | Hunter’s Mark, Longstrider Fighting Style: Archery |
| 3 | Ranger | Ensnaring Strike Subclass: Gloom Stalker |
| 4 | Ranger | Feat: Sharpshooter |
| 5 | Ranger | Lesser Restoration |
| 6 | Rogue | Multiclass to Rogue |
| 7 | Rogue | N/A |
| 8 | Rogue | Subclass: Assassin |
| 9 | Rogue | Feat: +2 Dexterity |
| 10 | Fighter | Fighting Style: Defense |
| 11 | Fighter | – |
| 12 | Fighter | Subclass: Champion |

At the start of the game, use your bonus action to Mark a target with Hunter’s Mark and shoot them at range with your bow. Look to get Titanstring Bow right away. Once you get Gloom Stalker unlocked, unload your damage on the highest threat (the target that can kill you or team) on turn one. Make sure to reapply Hunter’s Mark after you kill your primary target because it will refresh and won’t require a spell slot.

The biggest strategy you can do early is using Elixir of Bloodlust, which are food at Vendors, or you can craft them. This gives you an extra action after a kill and stacks with Potion of Speed. Once you get Action Surge at end game, you can have four actions in one turn, each with two attacks.

As you level, your main priorities aren’t fancy selections but gear and arrows. Stock up on elemental arrows because they make a huge difference in specific enemy fights. Right click on the enemies and see what type they are (beast, construct, fiend, etc.). Don’t save them up, spam them on a specific target with the same type for huge damage increases. Also, make sure to pre-buff with scrolls like Blur or Mirror Image on tough fights. Apply oil to your bow to get a few turns of extra damage, THEN, trigger surprise and wipe out the team.
Gloomstalker Ranger Best Gear

Weapon: the best Act 1 combination is Titanstring bow found Zhentarim Basement. It uses your STR ability score to add damage. While it seems odd, you can use the Club the Cloud of Hill Giant Strength found in Act 1 to boost your STR to 18.

Since you can use one hand and shield, combine with a Shield for extra AC even if you never us it. The Club can be found in the Arcane Tower at the top level. This combo can be done throughout the entire game, either using an Elixir of Hill Giant Strength or later the Gauntlets of Hill Giant Strength. Thus, you can use one weapon the entire game and do incredible damage or obtain Gontr Mael later

Chest: if you’re going to destroy every target on turn one, go with The Graceful Cloth chest found at Rosymorn Monastery Trail. This boost your DEX up to 20. If you get +1 Auntie Ethel, you can have 20 DEX in Act 1, obliterating everyone on turn one. Later, you can take a +2 DEX feat and swap to Armour of Agility or just keep it for simplisity.

Gloves: look to get the Gloves of Archery sold by Grat the in the Goblin Camp for an extra +2 damage with Range Attacks. You can swap to Guantlets of Hill Giant Strength with Titanstring of Legacy of the Masters later.
A key item to consider when playing on high difficulty is the Helm of Balduran: Found in Dragon’s Sanctum. It prevents you from being stun! Any item like this, Ring of Free Movement for instances is super helpful. If you get stunned on turn one without surprise, you are likely dead.

4. Battle Master Fighter Build (Simplest Meta Build)

If you want simple and effective, look no further than the Battle Master Fighter build. No complex spellcasting, ability score setup, multiclassing required, and access to all the gear you could want.
The fighter class is a versatile archetype with multiple subclass options, allowing for different playstyles. Players can choose the eldritch knight fighter for spellcasting capabilities and increased survivability, or the arcane archer for magic-enhanced ranged attacks using unique Arcane Shots.
The Fighter is effective because of Extra Attack and Improved Extra Attack. Every action you take, you can attack twice and eventually three times at level 11. With the available items and gear in BG3, this turns into a massive damage-dealing turn. Here’s an example:

- Action 1: attack with weapon three times (3 total).
- Action 2: used Action Surge for an extra action, 3x attacks (6 total).
- Action 3: kill an enemy with Elixir of Blood Lust active, another action, 3x attacks (9 total).
- Action 4: a spellcaster uses Haste on you or you use Darkfire Shortbow Haste spell in Act 2, 3x attacks (12 total).
- Bonus Action: Great Weapon Master gives you one attack on a kill or critical (13 total).
- Item Action: Act 3 glove of Martial Exertion can give you one extra attack by sacrificing some HP (14 total).
Now that’s an end-game fully min-max, but the raw power from that fourteen attack turn is staggering and surprisingly not complex.
However, the Fighter has some major downsides. While you start off very powerful, your movement speed is terrible and you spend most early turns walking, using a ranged weapon before reaching a target. This can be solved with gear, but it’s annoying at first. Second, you have no spellcasting. This can be solved with Eldritch Knight subclass, but you sacrifice simplicity. Lastly, you have lower Charisma so it makes it weaker for a main speaking character. However, if you’re brand new to DND and all the complex rules, use this build and just nuke everything with a Two-Handed Greatsword loadout.
Battle Master Fighter Build Character Creation
| Choice | Selection |
|---|---|
| Character | Origin – Custom character |
| Race | High Elf (Cantrip) Half-Orc (Attack Bonus) |
| Class | Fighter |
| Subclass | Battle Master |
| Background | Soldier |
| Ability Score | STR: 16 DEX: 14 CON: 16 INT: 8 WIS: 10 CHA: 10 |
| Skill Proficiencies | Acrobatics, Insight |

The most important choice in character creation is your racial choice. In Patch 8, BG3 added Booming Blade Cantrip, a super-powerful way to add damage to your melee attacks. This made Eldritch Knight a more popular choice because of access to spellcasting. However, you can gain the same raw power just by changing your standard Half-Orc racial choice to a High Elf to get one cantrip. This grants you Booming Blade, while retaining the ease and simplicity of the Battle Master subclass.
In order to keep things simple, this ability score suggestion is all even numbers that way you don’t have to worry about min-maxing every Acts permanent bonuses. If you do Auntie Ethel’s hair in Act 1, you can always respec to an odd strength number and reach a higher score, but it will give you a well rounded score.

Dexterity at 14 might seem odd because you are likely to be using heavy armor. However, 14 DEX allows you to wear many good medium sets and also have high initiative. Until you get the Alert Feat, your Fighter is likely to go near the end of combat if you have 10 DEX. What will happen is, a stun, eliminating your turn and all of your power. 14 DEX and eventually Alert feat ensure this won’t happen so you can nuke many NPC on turn one before they attempt to stun you.
Battle Master Fighter Build Overview
- Class: Fighter
- Subclass: Battle Master
- Background: Soldier
- Skills: Acrobatics, Perception
- Ability Score
- STR: 16
- DEX: 14
- CON: 16
- INT: 8
- WIS: 10
- CHA: 10
- Saving Throw: Strength, Dexterity
- Armour Proficiency: Light Armour, Medium Armour, Shields
- Weapon Proficiency: Simple Weapons, Martial Weapons

The main mechanic for the Battle Master build is Superiority Dice and Battle Manoeuvres. At level 3, you get an extra resource pool (Dice) that you can spend on these attacks. They allow you to disarm enemies, add more damage, and return damage if an attacker misses. Something like Trip Attack can be added to your normal attack by spending a Superiority Dice and giving a chance to stun (prone) a target. It’s just a simple way you can gain extra utility without spellcasting and the dice replenish on short rest.

The only other mechanics that are important are Action Surge which grants an extra action per short rest. You want to use this turn one when you can reach the highest threat or when you have to survive. Your actions start producing two attacks at level 5 and three attacks at level 11. Thus, anything that can give you extra actions becomes the most important part of your build (Potion of Speed, Haste, Elixir of Blood Lust, and Action Surge).

Until you get movement increase gear, your biggest issue will be range. Make sure to quip a Longbow right away, and especially the Titanstring bow. This helps doing some solid damage if you can’t reach a target on turn one. You will be using Greatsword, Two-handed weapon for optimal damage, so move into position when you can hit a target.

The number one thing you can do to boost your damage is pre-buff. This includes using Oil’s or coatings on your weapons. Poisons or Oil of Accuracy, anything can boost your damage or chance to land an attack. Second is Elixir, Vigilance, Blood Lust, Hill Giant Strength. Make sure to take one post long rest if you aren’t a spellcasting heavy team and don’t need a long rest every fight. Also, make sure to grab elemental arrows like Ice because it can provide a range stun early before you get Battle Maneuvers.

Once you get higher level, Misty Step providing gear, things get much easier. Have a Druid or Ranger cast Longstrider on all party members prior to the fight, which will help every single encounter.
Battle Master Fighter Best Gear
Weapons: always use a Two-Handed greatsword with the Great Weapon Master feat for the most damage. The tutorial has one called Everburn Blade which can be looted from Commander Zhalk during the prologue. You can also get Silver Sword of the Astral Plane with Command Drop cheese during the Githyanki interaction in Act 1 or keep it simple and get the Sword of Justice via Anders in the Toll House. In Act 3, upgrade to the Balduran’s Giantslayer and make sure to use it’s ability to make you enlarged for extra damage.

Chest: stick with heavy armor for the most part. Act 1 use Adamantine and Act 3 go with Helldusk Armour. If you have 14 DEX, you can use medium armor effectively especially if it has good bonuses. Act 2 has some good heavy armor from vendors that boost STR.

Movement: This is your biggest concern right away and there are TONs of items in Act 1 to help with movement. Usually you don’t want one character to have them all, but at least one or more on your Fighter will make a big difference:
- Haste Helm: Gives extra 1.5 meter movement per turn, Chest in the Blighted Village X 32, Y 403 (can be combined with Crusher’s Ring).
- Crusher’s Ring: Gives extra 3 meter movement per turn, can be looted or stolen from Crusher in the Goblin camp in Act 1.
- Amulet of Misty Step: found in Defiled Temple, gives a free Misty Step spell per short rest.
- Disintegration Nightwalker: also gives Misty Step spell and night walker bonus helping prevent movement impairing effects like ice, grease, ensnare, enwebbed, and entangled. Worn by Nere.

5. Light Cleric Build (Tank Healer DPS)

If you’re tired of the boring Shadowheart pure healer setup, imagine a build that is effective as a tank, healer, DPS all in one! This is the Light Cleric Build that specializes in debuffs, buffs, and radiant damage. The major upside to this build is, you provide massive damage, debuffs, and survivability to your team. However, it’s VERY gear dependent. Meaning, if you’re rushing through Act 1, don’t want to spend time hunting down items in Act 2, you won’t max out this build’s full potential.
Compared to other cleric subclasses, the Light Domain Cleric focuses on radiant damage and crowd control, while the life domain cleric excels at healing and support, the death domain cleric specializes in necromancy and necrotic damage, and both the war cleric and war domain cleric offer strong melee combat abilities and unique offensive features.
Preserve Life also offers a powerful mass healing option for clerics, especially useful for supporting and sustaining allies during tough encounters or Honor Mode runs.

The strength of the Light Cleric is the ability to do single-target range and AOE radius radiant damage versus all the enemies on the field. BG3 is loaded with gear that interacts with this damage type and produces the Radiant Orb debuff: Affected entity has -1 to Attack Rolls per remaining turn. Stack a ton of items and radiant damage and bonus damage, and most creatures cannot hit you or anyone in your party!
Warning: this build is very gear-dependent (seriously). Get the gear in each Act and it’s a powerhouse. If you don’t, then the Fighter will be a better choice.
Light Cleric Build Character Creation
| Choice | Selection |
|---|---|
| Character | Origin – Custom character |
| Race | Wood Elf Githyanki High Half-Elf |
| Class | Cleric |
| Subclass | Light Domain Eldritch Knight |
| Background | Folk Hero |
| Ability Score | STR: 8 DEX: 14 CON: 16 INT: 8 WIS: 17 CHA: 10 |
| Skill Proficiencies | Insight and Medicine |
Character creation choices are rather standard and your racial choice isn’t as impactful as other builds. The main issue with the Cleric is weaker action economy, meaning little ways to get extra Actions or Bonus Actions. That’s why we intend to multiclass this to the Fighter. Additionally, slow movement speed is another issue. You can counter the weaker movement speed with Wood Elf for an extra 1.5 movement per turn or Githyanki for Misty Step. However, most players will stick with High Half-Elf because of Shadowheart. Players who want a darker necrotic-focused caster can consider death cleric, but this setup favors Light for Radiant Orb support.
For ability score, we want to take War Caster in this build to help with Constitution saving throws while holding concentration. War Caster grants a +1 to ability score. If you plan on getting Auntie Ethel’s Hair bonus in act 1, have two scores on odd numbers, otherwise one. Wisdom is your spell casting modifier and Constitution helps with health but more important concentration. The premise of the build is holding concentration to produce radiant damage, so consider high CON critical to making it work, though some players also value dragon form-style concentration support and this build solves it through gear and feat choices instead.
Light Cleric Build Overview (How it Works)
- Class: Cleric, Fighter
- Subclass: Light Domain, Eldritch Knight
- Background: Folk Hero
- Skills: Medicine, Insight
- Ability Score
- Strength: 8
- Dexterity: 14
- Constitution: 16
- Intelligence: 8
- Wisdom: 17
- Charisma: 10
- Saving Throw: Wisdom, Charisma
- Armour Proficiency: Simple weapons, Flails, Morningstars
- Weapon Proficiency: Light armour, Medium armour, Shields

The most important part of the build to understand is producing radiant damage via Spiritual Guardians (level 5). This spell summons a radiant damage aura around you, dealing radiant damage, reducing movement speed, and requiring concentration (three meters). This is your main AOE where you rambo into packs of enemies to deal damage passively. Some effective builds lean harder on high-level spells for crowd control and damage later on. Hold Monster is a good example of high-value single-target control for locking down a dangerous enemy.

Now, you combine that radiant damage-dealing mechanic with a debuff, Radiating Orb, which lowers attack rolls by -1 each time it triggers. Other casters may prefer summons like Conjure Elemental for area control, but this build gets its control from Radiating Orb plus Spirit Guardians. Luckily, you can stack multiple gear sets to take advantage of this debuff:

Light Cleric Best Best Gear
- Luminous Armour (Act 1): When the wearer deals Radiant damage, they cause a Radiant Shockwave that inflicts Radiating Orb for 2 turns. Your bread and butter way to trigger this and found early in Act 1 at Chest in Selunite Outpost, Underdark.
- Coruscation Ring (Act 2): When the wearer deals spell damage while illuminated by a light source, they also inflict Radiating Orb upon the target for 2 turns. Found in Last Light Inn in trapped Heavy chest cellars.
- Luminous Gloves (Act 2): When the wearer deals Radiant damage, the target receives 2 turns of Radiating Orb. Found in Act 2 open field coordinates X: -52 Y: 11.
- The Sacred Star (Act 3): On a hit, inflict 1 turn of Radiating Orb upon the target.
- Fabricated Arbalest (Act 3): Illuminating Shot action Fire a shimmering bolt that inflicts 1 turn of Radiating Orb upon the target.
Likely, you will use two pieces only, but you have options as early as Act 1!
Light Cleric Build Leveling Guide
| Level | Class | Selection |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Cleric | Subclass: Thaumaturgy, Guidance, Sacred Flame, Spells: Command, Guiding Bolt, Sanctuary, Healing Word |
| 2 | Cleric | Shield of Faith |
| 3 | Cleric | Spiritual Weapon |
| 4 | Cleric | Feat: War Caster, Blade Ward, Aid |
| 5 | Cleric | Spirit Guardians, Swap Healing Word for Mass Healing Word |
| 6 | Fighter | Multiclass: Fighter, Defence Fighting Style |
| 7 | Fighter | Action Surge |
| 8 | Fighter | Subclass: Eldritch Knight, Booming Blade, Fire Bolt, Shield, Thunderwave, Longstrider |
| 9 | Fighter | Feat: Ability Improvement +2 Wisdom, Chromatic Orb |
| 10 | Cleric | Multiclass: Cleric, Protection from Energy, Glyph of Warding |
| 11 | Cleric | Drop Shield of Faith, Add Freedom of Movement and Death Ward |
| 12 | Cleric | Feat: Alert , Banishment |
Early in the game rely heavily on Guiding Bolt for damage, Command for stuns and crowd control, and Sanctuary for “oh crap.” At level three you get Spiritual Weapon which helps attacking turn one with an action and using your bonus action to cast a helpful summon spell that deals good damage an annoys enemies.
If you want to maximize your offensive spellcasting as a Cleric, especially with lightning spells, make use of the Destructive Wrath feature. This allows you to deal maximum possible damage with your thunder and lightning spells, ensuring consistent high-impact hits when using abilities like Call Lightning or Chromatic Orb (lightning).

Around level 4 or 5, explore the Underdark so you can get a killer gear combo that triggers tons of bonuses. Use this combo until you get more Radiant Orb gear in Act 2. OP healer combo:
- Amulet of Restoration (CRITICAL): Gives free bonus action mass healing word spell. Sold by Derryth Bonecloak Underdark Ebonlake Grotto.
- The Whispering Promise: Grants Blessed on heal for two turns. Bought from Volo in Druid’s Grove or from traders.
- Hellrider’s Pride: Healing targets grants resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, slashing. Can be bought, stolen, or earned from Zelvor.
- Boots of Aid and Comfort: Healing a target grants 3 temporary HP. Sold by Grat The Trader at the Goblin Camp.

Now, the combo is using your bonus action to cast Mass Healing Word (AOE) for a weak heal that usually reaches your entire team. With this heal, you grant everyone who’s a friendly:
- Blessed: 1d4 bonus to Attack rolls and Saving throws for 2 turns.
- Resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, slashing
- +3 Temporary HP
Use this combo on turn one to pre-buff with your bonus action, then use your action for a heal or damage, it’s OP!
At later levels you can swap to the Fighter for extra action economy with Action Surge. The Eldritch Knight subclass is a solid choice, even though it scales with INT and Wizard spells, you’re mainly wanting extra utility spells and Booming Blade cantrip. You can keep Cleric for less complications, or even use one level in Storm Sorcerer for Tempestuous Magic: Casting a level 1 spell grants you fly as a bonus action. Mage Armour is another survivability option on lighter-clothed caster variants, though it’s less relevant here since this build already uses armor and shields. This can solve your mobility problems if you want to retain high level Cleric spells.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Best Builds FAQ
1. What is the best overall build in BG3 Patch 8?
The Sorcadin (6 Sorcerer / 6 Paladin) is the strongest all-around build in Patch 8 because it combines burst melee damage through Divine Smite and Shadow Blade with Metamagic spellcasting, heavy armor proficiency, and high Charisma for dialogue checks. No other build covers as many roles simultaneously.
2. What is the best build for beginners or first-time Honour Mode players?
The Battle Master Fighter is the best starting point. It requires no spellcasting knowledge, no complex multiclass timing, and produces consistently high damage through Extra Attack and Superiority Dice that recharge on short rests, making it forgiving across long Honour Mode runs.
3. Is the Giant Barbarian throw build still viable in Patch 8?
Yes, and it is arguably the strongest pure combat build in the game. Once you hit level 4 and unlock Tavern Brawler, damage scales dramatically, and the Elemental Cleaver bonus at level 6 adds elemental damage and the Thrown property to any weapon, removing the need to constantly resupply throwing weapons.
4. Do you have to play Dark Urge to get the best gear on these builds?
No, but Dark Urge players gain access to the Deathstalker Mantle, a cloak that grants two turns of invisibility after every kill. It is particularly powerful on the Sorcadin and Gloomstalker builds and is close to mandatory for solo Honour Mode runs. Custom Tav characters can still complete these builds effectively without it.
5. Can the Gloomstalker build handle Honour Mode solo?
Yes. The Gloomstalker Assassin is widely considered the best solo Honour Mode build because it kills most threats before they take a single turn. The Surprise mechanic combined with Dread Ambusher, Assassinate, and Sharpshooter produces enough burst damage on turn one to end most encounters immediately.
6. Does Shadow Blade still work well in Patch 8 after the changes?
Yes, and it is significantly stronger than before. Patch 8 fully revamped Shadow Blade, and pairing it with the Resonance Stone found in the Mind Flayer Colony at the end of Act 2 doubles your Psychic damage against any non-Construct enemy, making it the foundation of the Sorcadin’s damage loop.
7. Is a Swords Bard or Sword Bard Archer build competitive in Patch 8?
The Swords Bard is one of the strongest builds in Patch 8, using Flourish attacks and high Charisma to deal consistent damage while also covering dialogue and support roles for the whole party. A Sword Bard Archer variant built around ranged Flourishes and elemental arrows is especially effective for players who want top-tier damage without committing to a full melee setup.
