Latest Update: August 15, 2026 – Categories: Baldur’s Gate 3
Master the Patch 8 Sorlock meta with our Sorcerer Warlock multiclass guide, designed specifically for Baldur’s Gate 3, focusing on combining Eldritch Blast spellcasting combo with melee Shadow Blade burst.

The Sorlock build is considered overpowered due to its ability to handle almost any situation in the game.
The 7/5 Sorlock is the “versatility king” of casters. While the 10/2 split is common for pure Eldritch Blast, stopping at level 2 or 3 in the Warlock doesn’t grant you Deepened the Pact. With Pact of the Blade, you can gain an extra attack with five levels of investment into Warlock. Thus, allowing you to play two ways highly effectively: melee Shadow Blade or ranged cantrip Eldritch Blast. Plus, the Sorlock starts off with tons of power thanks to the Hexblade subclass. The optimal core setup for a Sorlock includes a 10 Sorcerer / 2 Warlock split or a 11/1 split for higher-level spells. Below we go over every detail of the build and explain the rationale for our level selections and gear.
The Sorlock build combines the Sorcerer and Warlock classes, allowing players to maximize their spellcasting potential by focusing on Charisma. Key elements of this build include sorcerer features, sorcerer level progression for unlocking powerful spells and Metamagic, and the unique abilities of the warlock class such as Eldritch Blast and invocations.
This build guide is updated for Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8, Community Update #36, Version Number: 4.1.1.7209685.

Why Use the BG3 Sorlock Build (Sorcerer Warlock)?

The simplest ranged damage combo in Baldur’s Gate 3 is combining the Eldritch Blast cantrip with Hex. The Sorlock build allows for a focus on Charisma as the primary ability score, benefiting both the Sorcerer and Warlock classes. The Hex Warlock spell uses a bonus action to debuff the target and adds 1-6 necrotic damage on each hit. Eldritch Blast gains three beams at level 3, thus adding a ton of damage to an already powerful cantrip. The Sorlock excels in single-target damage due to the synergy between Eldritch Blast and Hex. You can make this even more powerful with Potent Robes, which deals additional damage equal to your Charisma modifier. Key invocations for Sorlocks are Agonizing Blast, which adds your Charisma modifier to Eldritch Blast damage, and Repelling Blast for crowd control.

The second reason to play this Sorlock is the Shadow Blade combination with Hexblade. You can summon a one handed weapon that deals Psychic damage. Psychic damage can be doubled with an item called the resonance stone. With Deepened Pact, you gain Extra Attack, allowing you to attack twice with one action. Thanks to Quickened Metamagic, you can use Eldritch Blast or a spell with your bonus action. Essentially giving you versatility to be effective in melee or at range.
When allocating ability points, the Sorlock’s reliance on Charisma for spellcasting is a strength, allowing for focused ability point allocation into Charisma as the main ability score. This maximizes the effectiveness of both Sorcerer and Warlock spells, including key Warlock spells like Hex and Command, as well as cantrips such as Eldritch Blast.

The Sorlock excels at survivability as well with spells like Mirror Image, Blur, and Darkness. For honour mode solo runs, you can cast Mirror Image, then Blur on yourself. This allows you to be nearly impossible to hit. You can also see through darkness spell thanks to Shadow Magic subclass. Thus, casting a Darkness cloud on top of yourself, makes you almost impossible to target from range or with spells. However, the build’s weaknesses include a lower hit point pool compared to pure martial classes, making it more vulnerable in direct combat.
The Sorlock in Patch 8 of BG3 is super versatile, fun, and survivable. The Sorlock can struggle with spell slot management, especially in longer encounters without rest. ‘Face’ character builds, owing to their high Charisma, excel at social interactions and skills like Persuasion and Deception.
Character Creation Selections – Sorlock build

| Choice | Selection |
|---|---|
| Character | Origin – Dark Urge Tav (Optional) |
| Race | Half-Orc |
| Class | 7 Sorcerer, 5 Warlock |
| Subclass | Shadow Magic, Hexblade |
| Background | Haunted One (Dark Urge) Entertainer (Tav Origin) |
| Ability Score | STR: 8 DEX: 16 CON: 14 INT: 8 WIS: 10 CHA: 17 |
| Skill Proficiencies | Deception, Investigation |

The most important decision in character creation is your Origin character. The Dark Urge locks you into an “evil” playthrough, but grants you a ultra-powerful cloak in Act 1 called Deathstalker Mantle. You can go with Tav or another Origin, but it will lessen your combat performance. If you choose Tav, your skill proficiencies and background will be different. The Entertainer background is recommended for Sorlock due to its skill proficiencies in Acrobatics and Performance.
The next choice is race, which we recommend Half-Orc. While it might seem odd on a spellcaster, if you use Shadow Blade and melee attacks, you can increase your critical damage and have exceptional burst. Wood Elf is another good choice for mobility, as they have increased movement speed and immunity to Sleep, making them one of the best races for Sorlock. Tiefling is also a strong option due to their darkvision and fire resistance. High Elf offers an extra cantrip to learn, which is useful for versatility. Duergar are strong for Sorlock because of their resistances to poison, charm, and paralysis, despite their reduced movement speed. Drow have bonuses similar to other Elves and come with extra spells and superior darkvision, making them a viable choice for Sorlock. Half-Elf is notable for being able to gain shield proficiency, which improves survivability, and Human provides an extra skill pick and additional carrying capacity.

For your ability score, go with an odd number on Charisma. Prioritized ability scores for a Sorlock build include Charisma (17+), Dexterity (16 for AC/Initiative), and Constitution (14+ for concentration). With Auntie Ethel’s Boon, and one feat, you can reach 20 Charisma in Act 1. Mirror of the Loss is another permanent bonus in Act 3, plus the Birthright Hat can get you to 24 Charisma. Remember that your spells (cantrips) and weapon attacks scale in effectiveness with Charisma, no other stat. Dexterity you want to be high for initiative and Armor Class even if you’re using medium armor. Dump strength and intelligence as you won’t need those stats and keep constitution at 14 for more health and saving throws. You can swap CON and DEX if you struggle to make saving throws. When leveling up, consider using ability improvement to further optimize your stats for maximum effectiveness.
Leveling Progression – Sorlock build

| 3 | Sorcerer (1) | Subclass: Shadow Magic Cantrips: Fire Bolt, Ray of Frost, Friends, Light Spells: Chromatic Orb, Magic Missile |
| 4 | Sorcerer (2) | Spell: Thunderwave Metamagic: Twinned, Extended |
| 5 | Sorcerer (3) | Spell: Shadow Blade Metamagic: Quickened Replace: Thunderwave w/ Misty Step |
| 6 | Sorcerer (4) | Cantrip: Bursting Sinew Spell: Mirror Image Feat: ASI +2 Charisma |
| 7 | Sorcerer (5) | Spell: Fireball |
| 8 | Sorcerer (6) | Spell: Counterspell |

| 12 | Warlock (5) | Deepened Pact: Extra Attack Spells: Hunger of Hadar Eldritch Invocations: One with Shadows |
Action Economy & Buff Stacking

You have two major sources of actions, spells and melee attacks. After a long rest, make sure to rebuff with Shadow Blade spell using the highest spell slot. Then, bind hex weapon so it scales off of Charisma. When you are ready to attack a target, use Booming Blade cantrip for extra damage. Your key spells for survival are Blur and Mirror Image, which can be used together. The Darkness cloud spell can also be used, just make sure you don’t need concentration with Hex, Blur, Hold Person, or another concentration spell.
Managing your concentration spells is crucial for maintaining control and maximizing your effectiveness in combat. While some spells are core to your build, other spells can provide useful versatility and should not be overlooked.

When you’re first starting the game, casting Hex with your bonus action, then Eldritch Blast is your bread and butter combo. This will keep your spell slots open, allowing you to use Chromatic Orb and Twinned, or Quickened with Fireball. Metamagic gives you the burst and action economy utility to attack twice in one turn. Sorcerers gain access to Metamagic, which allows them to enhance their spells using Sorcery Points. Utilizing Quickened Spell allows a Sorlock to cast a leveled spell as an action and Eldritch Blast as a bonus action, maximizing your damage output per turn. A Sorlock build can also significantly benefit from buffs like Haste to further enhance action economy.

Your bonus actions are primarily used for buffs, mobility, or Quickened with Sorcery Points. Remember that Quickened allows you to cast a spell as a bonus action. Plus, you can attack twice with your Shadow Blade once you have five levels in Warlock. The best turn is a combination of melee attacks, then a Quickened massive Fireball. However, each turn you should be using both your bonus action and action. Hexblade Curse is a great spell to use when you are going to attack and want better chance of getting a critical.
Also, consider using the Hound of Ill Omen as a distraction as it summons a creature for you. The combat strategy for Sorlocks often revolves around resource management, converting Warlock spell slots into Sorcery Points. Using Sorcery Points to convert spell slots into additional Sorcery Points can help maintain spellcasting momentum in longer encounters.

When building a bg3 sorlock build, consider choosing the Draconic Bloodline subclass for your Sorcerer levels. Draconic Bloodline enhances elemental damage, especially fire, and provides additional defensive capabilities such as increased hit points and the ability to gain resistance to your chosen element. The subclass’s elemental affinity feature boosts your elemental damage (like fire) by adding your Charisma modifier to the damage and can grant resistance to that damage type, making it a strong choice for both offense and survivability.
For maximizing elemental damage, prioritize spells that align with your elemental affinity. For example, if you select fire as your affinity, spells like Scorching Ray become even more effective. Scorching Ray is a high-damage, multi-ray fire spell that synergizes well with Draconic Bloodline and items that boost fire damage. Additionally, Hellish Rebuke is a powerful reaction spell that deals fire damage to attackers, fitting perfectly into your spell repertoire for both offense and battlefield control.
The Hat of Fire Acuity is a key item for this build, as its fire acuity effect increases spell success rates and debuff application, especially when opening combat with spells like Scorching Ray. For defensive gear, look for items or features that allow you to gain resistance to fire or other elemental damage types, further increasing your survivability.
The Potent Robe, available in Act 2, is critical for this build as it adds your Charisma modifier again to cantrip damage, significantly boosting your overall damage output.
Potions, Elixirs, and Consumables
Elixirs

Elixir of Bloodlust: Since you have Extra Attack from the Warlock (Level 5), this elixir allows you to potentially swing 3–4. Drink this before any encounter with multiple enemies to trigger the “Kill-Action” early.
Elixir of Battlemage’s Power: Grants 3 stacks of Arcane Acuity until a Long Rest. Each stack provides a +1 bonus to Spell Attack Rolls and Spell Save DC. This is best for major boss fights where you need your Hold Person, Command, or Fear spells to have a near 100% success rate. Use when you are going to cast more spells due to range or enemy types.
Elixir of Viciousness: Increases your Critical Hit range. This can give you massive burst damage with Half-Orc and Risky Ring attack advantage.
Elixir of Hill Giant Strength / Cloud Giant Strength: You don’t need this elixir since your Charisma is your main ability score. However, if you aren’t at endgame and want to do melee attacks, you can use it in a pinch.
Elixir of Vigilance: Grants a +5 bonus to Initiative and immunity to being Surprised. In 2026 meta-play, the most dangerous threat is being stunned or killed before you take a turn. If you do not have the Alert feat, this ensures you go first to drop a Darkness cloud for protection. Use specifically for high-initiative boss fights.
Potions Consumables

Potion of Speed: Grants an extra Action, +2 AC, Advantage on DEX Saves, and double movement speed for 3 turns. This is your primary way to boost actions for a few turns. Just realize, after three turns, you will lose the effect and skip a turn.
Potion of Angelic Reprieve: Relished by Lockadins. It grants the benefits of a Short Rest. Since your highest-level Smite slots come from Warlock, this potion effectively “reloads” your shotgun mid-dungeon.
Oils & Weapon Coatings

Oil of Accuracy: Grants a +2 bonus to Attack Rolls for 10 turns. Use this when facing high-AC bosses to ensure your Shadow Blade smites land reliably. Apply to your weapon just before initiating combat from stealth.
Drow Poison: Chance to inflict Sleep on the target. Attacks against sleeping targets are guaranteed Critical Hits. Best used with the Arrow of Many Targets (if you have ranged proficiency) to put multiple enemies to sleep, setting them up for massive Shadow Blade Smites on your next turn. Have a Ranger or Rogue in your team use this so you can blast the enemy afterwards.
Illithid Powers and Synergies

Illithid Powers are granted by consuming Tadpoles and the effect is introduced early in Act 1. There aren’t any major negative impacts to your character, including your story ending. However, consuming the Astral-Touched Tadpole will change your appearance and effect your character’s epilogue and relationships. If you’re interested in the most powerful character, it’s near mandatory to consume and seek out these tadpoles for incredible passive and active bonuses.
Tier 1: The Essentials (Prioritize First)
Luck of the Far Realms: Once per Long Rest, when you make a successful Attack Roll, you can change it into a Critical Hit. This is the most important power for the any build. It allows you to guarantee a massive crit on a boss exactly when you need it.
Favourable Beginnings: The first Attack Roll or Ability Check you make against a target gains a bonus equal to your Proficiency Bonus. This is a “passive” buff that applies to every single encounter. It significantly helps you land your first attack.
Cull of the Weak: When you bring a creature’s HP lower than your number of evolved Illithid powers, they die instantly and deal 1-4 Psychic damage to nearby enemies. This acts as an “execution” mechanic, exploding multiple enemies dealing huge AOE damage.
Tier 2: Combat Utility
Ability Drain: Once per turn, when you make an Attack Roll, the target’s corresponding Ability Score is reduced by 1. By hitting an enemy repeatedly, you lower their physical saves or AC, making them easier for the rest of your party to hit or crowd-control. This also reduces the enemy’s saving throw success rates, increasing the effectiveness of spells and effects that require saving throws.
Psionic Backlash: When an enemy casts a spell within 9m, you can use a Reaction to deal 1d4 Psychic damage per spell level. This provides you with a Reactions against casters, potentially breaking their concentration before they can debuff your team. Interrupting a caster in this way can also prevent them from forcing your party to make difficult saving throws.
Tier 3: High-Tier Mastery (Astral Tadpole Required)
Black Hole: Use an Action to pull all nearby enemies into a single point and potentially Slow them. This is the ultimate setup for the Sorlock. Pull everyone into one spot, then use Quickened Spell to drop a Fireball to hit the entire group at once.
Mind Blast: Deal 4d8+Int Psychic damage in a massive cone and potentially Stun targets for 1 turn. This is the best crowd-control tool for AOE fights.
Concentrated Blast: Deal 3d6+Int Psychic damage to a target. If you are concentrating on another spell, you heal for the damage dealt. This is perfect for the Sorlock who is already concentrating on Darkness. It turns your extra actions into a source of self-healing while maintaining high damage.

Combat Strategy with Eldritch Blast Cantrip
Your combat strategy revolves around pre, first turn, and sustained combat. Here’s how to play the Sorlock:
Pre-Combat: Make sure to buff with Elixir, Oil, Shadow Blade, Bind Hexblade, Mirror Image, and Blur right before combat. You can also generate Sorcery points, spell slots, and even cast Hound of Ill Omen all before combat starts. When considering subclass options, remember that the best subclasses for Sorlocks include Draconic Bloodline for damage, Storm Sorcery for mobility, and Wild Magic for unpredictable effects. For Warlock, the Fiend subclass grants temporary HP on kills, while the Great Old One offers control through critical hits.
Turn 1: Your goal on turn one is to either wipe out the opponent or prepare for a long fight. Using a bonus action with Quickened, either launch a big AOE fireball or Eldritch Blast Hex combination. Your action should be used for a high impact spell or double melee attack. In the event you cannot kill one or more targets, use Quickened with Darkness cloud and move into it. Utilizing Darkness with the Devil’s Sight invocation allows the Sorlock to attack from a position of safety while blinding enemies, making you nearly impossible to hit and preventing enemies from targeting you.
After this is completed, then you go into priority mode. Look to attack targets in melee with Booming Blade, Shadow Blade combo. Ranged attacks go with AOE Fireball or Eldritch Blast Hex combo. Make sure you are spending actions and bonus action every turn because there is always something to do on a Sorlock. When selecting spells for combat, don’t overlook utility spells and other spells—these can provide important support, control, and versatility beyond direct damage. For example, spells like Invisibility or Mage Armor can offer strategic advantages. Additionally, take advantage of environmental effects: the combination of Wet conditions and lightning spells can significantly increase your damage output against enemies.
Your party composition should contain a Life or Light Cleric (Shadowheart), area based damage dealer spellcaster Sorcerer or Wizard, and a Ranger/Rogue multiclass build for party members. Your Cleric heals and buffs, while your Sorcerer nukes with large AOE spells, and Ranger and Rogue combo helps with ranged damage and exploration. If you don’t need healing, you can swap out Cleric for a melee based Fighter or another spellcaster.
Spell Management for Sorlock Builds
Mastering spell management is the foundational requirement for any high-performance Sorcerer Warlock multiclass build in Baldur’s Gate 3. The Sorlock’s distinctive combination of spell slots, spell attack rolls, and versatile spell selection allows players to maintain dominance throughout both early-game encounters and late-game combat scenarios.
Spell Slots: One of the most significant advantages available to the Sorlock build is access to both Warlock and Sorcerer spell slot systems. Warlock spell slots provide exceptional value due to their short rest refresh mechanic, effectively allowing players to cast high-impact spells such as Hex, Darkness, or Hunger of Hadar multiple times per adventuring day without depleting long-rest resource pools. Sorcerer spell slots, in contrast, are specifically reserved for the most critical spell applications including devastating damage spells like Fireball, essential utility spells like Counterspell, or powerful control effects such as Hold Person and Confusion.
Spell Attack Rolls and Attack Rolls: Your spell attack rolls and attack rolls are fundamentally powered by your Charisma modifier, making this attribute the primary focus for optimization through ability score improvements, specialized equipment such as the Birthright hat, and permanent statistical bonuses. Items that enhance your spell save DC or provide additional damage to your attacks (including Potent Robes or Helldusk Gloves) are essential components for maximizing every spell and cantrip effectiveness. Players must remember to utilize consumables such as Elixir of Battlemage’s Power before significant boss encounters to further enhance spell attack rolls and spell save DC values, ensuring that control spells and damage spells successfully connect when combat situations demand maximum effectiveness.
Spell Selection: A comprehensively optimized Sorlock spellbook maintains careful balance between direct damage capabilities, crowd control options, and utility functions. Eldritch Blast serves as the fundamental cantrip for ranged attack applications, particularly when enhanced through Agonizing Blast and Repelling Blast invocations. For control applications, players should prioritize spells that require saving throws, including Hold Person or Hold Monster, and utilize Metamagic options such as Heightened Spell to increase enemy resistance difficulty. Utility spells should not be underestimated – Minor Illusion, Misty Step, and Mage Armor can dramatically alter combat outcomes in challenging situations or significantly boost character survivability.
Metamagic and Invocations: Metamagic represents your primary tool for extending spell slot efficiency and effectiveness. Quickened Spell allows spell casting as a bonus action, while Twinned Spell effectively doubles the impact of single-target spell applications. Extended Spell provides optimal value for maintaining concentration spells such as Blur or Darkness for extended durations, maximizing defensive uptime throughout encounters. Eldritch Invocations including Agonizing Blast and One with Shadows provide both enhanced damage output and tactical flexibility, allowing players to adapt effectively to any encounter scenario.
Combat Spell Strategy: In combat situations, players must consistently evaluate which spell slots to utilize based on current tactical requirements. Use Warlock slots for frequent, high-impact spell applications and preserve Sorcerer slots for emergency situations or massive area-of-effect damage scenarios. Initiate combat encounters with control spells to debuff enemy capabilities or establish guaranteed critical hit opportunities with spells such as Faerie Fire. When confronting high-AC opponents, utilize oils and buffs to enhance attack roll values, and maintain reliance on cantrips like Eldritch Blast for consistent damage output between significant spellcasting applications.
Best Party Composition for the Sorlock

Party Synergy: Who to Pair With
The Sorlock build will play with medium and melee range capabilities. Therefore, you should have a balanced party with a support, utility, and DPS companion alongside your primary character. Use Gale as a secondary spellcaster for AOE damage and crowd control spells. Astarion is key for melee pressure with dual-wield and utility such as chest lockpicking and trap detection. Shadowheart is your go-to buff, debuffer, and healer all in one.
| Party Slot | Best Pick | Why It Works |
| Utility | Astarion (Rogue Multiclass) | Melee DPS with lockpicking. |
| Support | Shadowheart (Life or Light Cleric) | Pre-buff, healing, and debuffs. |
| AOE and Control | Gale (Evocation Wizard) | AOE Fireballs and crowd control spells. |
- Pre-Buff: Cast Bless and any other until long rest buff on your party immediately after a long rest.
- Surprise: Use Astarion to sneak into position and hit a target from stealth to trigger the surprise status effect.
- Guiding Bolt: Use Shadowheart’s Spiritual Guardian and Radiant Orb combo to debuff enemies’ attack rolls.
- Fireball: Evocation Wizard doesn’t trigger friendly fire, so use Fireball, Ice Storm, and other AOE DPS spells.
Avoid: Wyll as a Warlock since it will be a bit redundant to have another Charisma-based character. You also don’t want to have a team full of melee builds with Karlach or Lae’zel, so keep one or two melee characters max.
Honorable mentions: Halsin or Jaheira are decent mid-game companions that use Druid spellbooks. If you don’t find yourself needing any healing, but want more ranged firepower or Wild Shape survivability, these are two choices.
BG3 Sorlock Build FAQ
1. What is the best level split for the Sorlock in BG3?
The 7 Sorcerer / 5 Warlock split is the versatility choice, unlocking Deepened Pact for Extra Attack with Shadow Blade while keeping access to Fireball and Metamagic. The 10 Sorcerer / 2 Warlock split is better for pure Eldritch Blast focused play with more Sorcery Points and higher-level spells, but you give up melee Extra Attack entirely.
2. Why do Warlock spell slots matter on this build?
Warlock spell slots recharge on a short rest rather than a long rest, giving you two additional high-level casts per adventuring day without waiting. Converting those short-rest slots into Sorcery Points using Flexible Casting is also one of the most efficient ways to fuel additional Metamagic uses between long rests.
3. How many beams does Eldritch Blast fire at once?
Eldritch Blast scales with your total character level, not your Warlock level specifically. It fires two beams at level 5 and three beams at level 11, meaning even a 2 Warlock / 10 Sorcerer character fires three beams at the same time as a pure Warlock of the same total level.
4. Do you need five levels in Warlock to use Shadow Blade effectively?
No, you can use Shadow Blade with any level split since it is a Sorcerer spell. However, five Warlock levels unlock Deepened Pact, which grants Extra Attack specifically with your Pact weapon, turning Shadow Blade into a two-attack-per-action melee weapon and significantly increasing its sustained damage output compared to lower Warlock investment.
5. Can Hex and Eldritch Blast be used in the same turn?
Yes, and this is the build’s simplest combat loop. Cast Hex as a bonus action to apply the necrotic damage debuff, then fire Eldritch Blast as your main action. Each beam of Eldritch Blast independently triggers Hex’s bonus damage, making three-beam Eldritch Blast at level 11 deal an extra 3d6 necrotic damage per cast on top of Agonizing Blast’s Charisma additions.
6. Does Quickened Spell let you fire two Eldritch Blasts in one turn?
Yes. Quickening allows you to cast any spell as a bonus action for 3 Sorcery Points, meaning you can fire one Eldritch Blast as your main action and a second as your bonus action in the same turn. At level 11 with three beams per cast, this produces six beams per turn before any additional buffs.
7. Is the Sorlock good for Honour Mode?
Yes, and its survivability toolkit is a primary reason. Casting Darkness on yourself while the Shadow Magic subclass lets you see through it makes you nearly untargetable at range, Mirror Image and Blur compound that defense further, and Warlock spell slots refreshing on short rest means you maintain more consistent output across the longer resource-intensive encounters that Honour Mode produces.
