Why Use the BG3 Returning Pike Build?

The Returning Pike Throw Barbarian build focuses on high burst damage through thrown weapons. In Patch 8, throw builds are even more powerful with the Giant Barbarian subclass. This new subclass gains Giant’s Rage which doubles your throw attack damage. This bonus stacks with Tavern Brawler bonus, thus giving you some of the highest damage and great range! A good thing about the Returning Pike is its durability, as it returns to you after each throw, allowing for continuous use without worrying about losing your weapon.

Using the Returning Pike weapon, this item returns to you after thrown and you can get it early in BG3. After you reach level 6 with the Barbarian and Path of Giants, you gain Elemental Cleaver. This automatically grants Thrown property to any weapon and reappears after you throw it. Thus, you can expand your weapon loadout later in the game and get into complex builds and weapon loadouts.
The Throw Build utilizes the unique properties of the Returning Pike and other weapons to maximize effectiveness, making it capable of solo honour mode. While it won’t have all the fancy charisma based speech check benefits, it will get you through the toughest combat encounters in BG3.
BG3 Returning Pike Build Character Creation

The most important decision for creating your character with the Returning Pike Throw build is your ability score. This guide assumes you will get Tavern Brawler feat and Auntie Ethel’s Hair, a permanent bonus in Act 1. Both of these bonuses grant a +1 to one ability score, thus giving you an even number. If you don’t plan on using one or either, adjust and land on an even number to gain a bonus.

The next choice is in origin character. There is one performance benefit in origin characters selecting Dark Urge because you gain Death Stalker Mantle cloak. The downside is, this will lock your story into a unique circumstance (evil) and might not be for every players. However, if pure performance is what you want, go with Dark Urge.
Lastly, your racial choice is important because you cannot change it. Half-Orc is the best even on a throw build because of all the bonuses y ou get including extra damage on melee criticals. Githyanki and any Tiefling are alternative choices. If performance isn’t important, you can pick any race.

Leveling Progression – Returning Pike Build
For the Returning Pike build, start out as a Barbarian and level to 6. You must go to six because you gain Elemental Cleaver and it’s vital to throwing any weapon not just Returning Pike! Take the Path of the Giant subclass because it doubles throw damage, or you can take Berserker which is also good.
Next, multiclass at level 7 to Rogue and take four levels to gain the Thief subclass. The Giant subclass has heavy emphasis on bonus actions with Boot of the Giants so this will help you do extra damage. Moreover, you gain extra utility with Rogue using bonus action to dash to gain extra movement speed or hide.
The last multiclass is Fighter with levels 11 and 12. You’re doing this mainly for Action Surge so you can get an extra action once per combat. After using Action Surge, taking a short rest allows you to regain this key ability, ensuring you maintain high damage output and combat efficiency throughout encounters. Combine all this you’ll have an extra bonus action every turn, on demand extra action that stacks with Elixir of Blood Lust and Potion of Speed!

How to Get Returning Pike in BG3

You can purchase the Returning Pike from Gnat the Trader in the Goblin Camp of Act 1. Keep in mind, you can kill or destroy the entire camp so try to purchase this before story decisions are made that could impact gaining the weapon.
If you can’t find the Returning Pike in Gnat’s inventory, a common fix is to long rest and check again, as the trader’s stock may refresh. Players might be missing the fact that the Returning Pike only appears if certain story events haven’t been triggered, so make sure to visit the Goblin Camp early.
How to Use Returning Pike in BG3
The Returning Pike has the Homing Weapon features that returns the weapon to owners hand when thrown. Go to your individual character with the Returning Pike in their inventory. Use the common action Throw, then select the item from your inventory. Select your target, and throw! Returning Pike should hit the enemy if in range and return to you automatically. Throwing the pike can also push enemies forward, which may cause them to fall off ledges or change their positioning in combat.

The damage will scale off of strength so make sure to use Elixir of strength, Tavern Brawler, and or any item that boost damage like Ring of Flinging.
Gear Progression Path – Returning Pike
The overall gear progression is simple with the Returning Pike Throw build. Certain gear choices can help you control the ground in combat, giving you a tactical advantage. Pick up any Javelin or take Lae’zel’s gear immediately if you’re not going to use her. Selecting the right gear is also crucial for survival, especially in tougher encounters. Potions, Elixirs, and Consumables for the Returning Pike Build
Potions, elixirs, and consumables are a huge boost to the Returning Pike Build, turning a strong character into an absolute powerhouse. Ability improvement potions, especially those that increase Strength, are essential for maximizing the damage of your thrown attacks. Before entering combat, make sure to drink an Elixir of Hill Giant Strength or similar potion to gain a significant advantage—this not only increases your attack rolls but also the damage dealt with every throw of the Returning Pike.
Haste potions are another key consumable, granting you an extra attack per turn. This means you can throw your pike, use your bonus action for an enraged throw, and still have another attack to pressure enemies. For those looking to push their damage even further, dual wielding potions allow you to attack with both the Returning Pike and another weapon, making each round of combat even more devastating.
Don’t overlook consumables that grant temporary hit points or resistance, as these can help you survive tough encounters. By planning your consumable use before a fight, you ensure your wielder is always at maximum effectiveness, ready to take on any enemy that stands in your way.
Illithid Powers and Synergies
Illithid Powers offer a unique set of abilities that can take the Returning Pike Build to the next level. By tapping into these powers, your character can gain access to spells that deal thunder damage, which pairs perfectly with the Returning Pike for explosive area-of-effect attacks. This synergy allows you to hit multiple enemies at once, softening up groups before finishing them off with your thrown weapon.
Additionally, certain Illithid Powers can grant heavy armor proficiency, giving your wielder increased survivability in the thick of combat. When combined with abilities like action surge and second wind from your Fighter levels, you can recover quickly and keep up the pressure on enemies, even in prolonged fights.
Utilizing Illithid Powers not only expands your arsenal of spells and abilities but also provides new ways to control the battlefield and adapt to different enemy types. Whether you need to break through tough armor, deal with crowds, or simply gain an edge in a difficult encounter, these powers are a valuable tool for any Returning Pike wielder.
Managing Resources and Abilities
Resource and ability management is at the heart of mastering the Returning Pike Build. With so many powerful options at your disposal—bonus actions, enraged throws, spell slots, and more—it’s crucial to plan your turns carefully to maximize your impact in combat.
Always keep an eye on your available spell slots and consumables, ensuring you have enough resources to maintain your offensive output and survivability throughout each encounter. Equip gear that complements your playstyle, such as items that grant extra bonus actions or improve your thrown weapon attacks, to further enhance your effectiveness.
Smart use of your abilities—like saving action surge for critical moments or using second wind when your health drops—can make the difference between victory and defeat. By staying aware of your resources and making strategic decisions each round, you’ll ensure your Returning Pike wielder remains a dominant force on the battlefield.
Combat Strategy
The main combat strategy with Returning Pike Throw build is to get within 10-15 meters range of your primary target in stealth. Attacking from stealth and throw the Returning Pike will trigger the Surprise status effect, giving you an extra round of combat without retaliation. Next, use your bonus action to initiate Rage so you gain extra damage on your throws. At this point, depending on your level, you can use a potion for Potion of Speed or Kick with Giant subclass. When using Giant Kick, you can position yourself to cause enemies to fall from ledges, dealing extra damage or even resulting in instant kills.
On the second turn, target the highest damage dealer and either kill or lower their HP so an ally can kill them. If you have two bonus actions, you can use one to Dash in order to move after attacking out of range of damage. Moreover, use the Giant Kick and never let your bonus action go to waste. With your action, use the Throw and make sure to activate Elemental Cleaver and examine the enemies to see if they are weak or vunerable. In some scenarios, the damage output and battlefield control you can achieve with this build is simply ridiculous, allowing you to dominate encounters with ease.
Another strategy for combat is pre-buffing. This involves spending a few minutes after a long rest and just outside of the combat area apply buffs to yourself. You can coat your weapon in oil, drink an elixir, have spell casters use Longstrider, Death Ward, Bless, and many other spells. This way, when you start combat, you are much more likely to not die and there’s zero downside. Then, start combat from stealth if at all possible, it’s key to winning hard fights.
Advanced Combat Techniques
To truly unlock the full potential of the Returning Pike Build, it’s important to master advanced combat techniques. One powerful tactic is dual wielding: by equipping the Returning Pike in your main hand and another thrown weapon in your off-hand, you can unleash a barrage of attacks in a single turn, overwhelming even the toughest enemies.
Another advanced strategy involves using spells that deal thunder damage in combination with your thrown attacks. This allows you to create devastating area-of-effect combos, damaging multiple enemies and setting them up for follow-up attacks. The Returning Pike’s unique properties make it ideal for these kinds of synergies, giving the wielder access to a wide range of offensive options.
By practicing these techniques and learning when to deploy them, you’ll be able to adapt to any combat situation, whether you’re facing a single powerful foe or a horde of enemies. The key is to stay flexible, use your abilities creatively, and always look for opportunities to maximize your attacks each round.
Party Synergies
Since the Returning Pike build is medium range, you can have an aggressive front-line Fighter in your party like Lae’zel. She can take aggro and use a Two-Handed melee weapon and preferably the Battle Master subclass to knock down enemies and remove weapons.
Next, you will want two spellcasters: Wizard Evocation (Gale) and Shadowheart as Life Cleric. Use Shadowheart for healing and buffs as well as Radiant Damage and Luminous Armor to debuff enemies. Use Gale as a Wizard with large scale AOE like Fireball and also equip him with Counterspell to shut down enemy spell casters. Lastly, you will need Astarion or another character as a Ranger/Rogue that can steal, pickpocket, and lockpick. This should give you a balanced party.
If you have played with different party compositions, you may find certain synergies more effective than others. While playing with various setups, you might notice that leaving out a dedicated healer means your party could miss crucial support in tough battles. It’s obvious that including Shadowheart as a Life Cleric creates a strong synergy with Gale’s AOE damage, so don’t overlook this combination. Experiment with playing different party setups to discover what works best for your style. In the future, updates or new content could introduce additional classes or features that further impact optimal party synergies.
