When you think of a holy warrior, it’s the Devotion Paladin: “…You act with honour and virtue to protect the weak and pursue the greater good.” This build is designed as a straightforward, Two-Handed-wielding Divine Smite smasher of evil. Unlike other complex multiclass setups, the Devotion Paladin can rely on its subclass features to power it’s attacks and devastate bosses.
What makes Devotion different is the Sacred Weapon buff, which adds your full Charisma modifier to attack rolls. That gives it a unique high-burst two ability score dip. Considering Strength and Charisma are easy to increase (through gear and elixirs), it’s possible to achieve the largest DPS burst among Paladins.
This guide covers a pure Paladin 12 Oath of Devotion build using Strength and a two-handed greatsword, tuned for Honour Mode. It’s the cleanest, most beginner-friendly Paladin in the game and still hits like a truck.
This build guide is updated for Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8, Community Update #36, Version Number: 4.1.1.7209685.

Why Use the Oath of Devotion Paladin Build?

The main reason you want to pick the Devotion Paladin is for the high Charisma and Strength combination thanks to Sacred Weapon. You can benefit from your second-highest ability score, thus giving you the party face in dialogue, plus Charisma added to your attack rolls. Moreover, the Devotion Paladin isn’t nearly as complex as other builds, not requiring you to multiclass to feel powerful. Below is what you can expect from this subclass and build in BG3:
- Sacred Weapon fixes your accuracy. Adding your Charisma modifier to attack rolls (roughly +3 to +5) means your Great Weapon Master swings and Divine Smites land against even the highest-AC bosses in Acts 2 and 3.
- Divine Smite is the best burst button. Spend a spell slot on a melee hit for a huge chunk of radiant damage, and it doubles on a critical hit; a single crit-smite can end a boss.
- Heavy armor and Aura of Protection. Aura of Protection adds your Charisma modifier to the saving throws of you and every nearby ally, which is one of the strongest defensive effects in the game for the whole party.
- The simplest oath to maintain. Devotion’s tenets (courage and compassion) are what you’d naturally do as a hero, so you keep your subclass without effort; no accidental oath-breaking.
It’s the lowest-ceiling Paladin compared to the utility or upsides of more complex Vengeance or Oathbreaker Paladins. Its Aura of Devotion (charm immunity) is niche. Like every Paladin, its early-game mobility is poor until you get Misty Step access from gear. This is a build that wins on consistency, not flashy stats.
Oath of Devotion Paladin build Character Creation

| Choice | Selection |
|---|---|
| Class | Paladin |
| Subclass | Oath of Devotion |
| Best Race | Half-Orc |
| Background | Soldier |
| Ability Scores | STR 17 DEX 10 CON 14 INT 8 WIS 8 CHA 16 |
| Skill Proficiencies | Persuasion, Insight |
Best Race for the Oath of Devotion Paladin Build

The Half-Orc is the best choice for a Devotion smite-focused Paladin build because of Savage Attacks. Dealing an extra weapon die on every melee critical. Since a crit doubles your Divine Smite dice too, Half-Orc turns every crit-smite into a monster hit. Relentless Endurance (survive one killing blow per long rest at 1 HP) is a genuine Honour Mode safety net for a frontliner.
Best Ability Scores (point buy) for Oath of Devotion Paladin Build

Paladins are the rare class that genuinely wants two stats: Strength for your weapon attacks and damage, and Charisma for your spell save DC, Sacred Weapon’s accuracy bonus, and, most importantly, Aura of Protection. Run Strength 17 and Charisma 16, take Constitution 14 to hold concentration on Bless and smites, and dump Intelligence and Wisdom.
Grab Auntie Ethel’s Hair in Act 1 and put the +1 into Strength (to 18); your Charisma is already 16 from creation. Your feats then push Strength to 20 first (for damage) and Charisma up second (for a stronger aura). By late game you want both Strength and Charisma high; the permanent boosts below get you there.
A note on Charisma: unlike a pure damage dealer, a Paladin’s Charisma isn’t just a “nice to have” because Aura of Protection adds your Charisma modifier to everyone’s saving throws, so every point of Charisma makes your whole party harder to crowd-control. Don’t dump it.
Best Background

Soldier is the best background because you gain Athletics and Intimidation skills. Plus, it fits the melee burster style. Another option is Noble if you want a higher Charisma style and party face.
Best Skills

If you picked the Soldier background, the two most important skills are Persuasion and Insight. You want both Persuasion and Intimidation so your dialogue has two options to bypass quests.
Leveling Progression – Oath of Devotion Paladin build
Oath spells are granted for free and are always prepared; they never count against your prepared-spell limit. Paladins prepare spells from their whole list and can change them on a long rest. Below are the recommended choices and prepared spells for this build:
| Level | Selection | Oath Spells | Prepared Spells |
| 1 | Oath of Devotion; Channel Oath: Holy Rebuke; Lay on Hands; Divine Sense; heavy armor + martial weapons | ||
| 2 | Fighting Style: Great Weapon Fighting; Divine Smite; spellcasting | Spells: Thunderous Smite, Wrathful Smite, Divine Favour, Command, Cure Wounds | |
| 3 | Channel Oath: Sacred Weapon & Turn the Unholy; Divine Health | Protection from Evil and Good, Sanctuary | Shield of Faith |
| 4 | Feat: Great Weapon Master | Searing Smite | |
| 5 | Extra Attack | Lesser Restoration, Silence | Magic Weapon |
| 6 | Aura of Protection (add CHA to all nearby saves) | Aid | |
| 7 | Aura of Devotion (charm immunity) | Branding Smite | |
| 8 | Feat: Ability Improvement (+2 STR, to 20) | Compelled Duel | |
| 9 | Level 3 spells | Beacon of Hope, Remove Curse | Blinding Smite, Warden of Vitality (drop Compelled Duel) |
| 10 | Aura of Courage (fear immunity) | Elemental Weapon | |
| 11 | Improved Divine Smite (+1d8 radiant on every melee hit) | Revivify | |
| 12 | Feat: Savage Attacker | Crusader’s Mantle |
Here are the most critical choices for you to pick and why:
- Level 2: Great Weapon Fighting. Rerolls low weapon-damage dice, which matters most on a big two-handed greatsword. Set Divine Smite to “Ask” in your reactions so you choose when to spend a slot rather than auto-dumping them.
- Level 4: Great Weapon Master. Leave the +10-damage toggle on. Sacred Weapon’s accuracy bonus covers the -5 penalty, and GWM grants a bonus-action attack on any kill or crit. This is the feat that defines the build’s damage.
- Level 6: Aura of Protection. The single best defensive feature a Paladin gets. Turn it on (it doesn’t auto-activate) and your whole party’s saving throws jump by your Charisma modifier.
- Level 11: Improved Divine Smite. Every melee hit now deals an extra 1d8 radiant damage automatically, free damage on every swing for the rest of the game.
Best Spells, Smites & Channel Oath

Divine Smite is your premier damage tool. Turn on reactions so you can trigger extra damage when you need it. Especially with Improved Divine Smite, these can deal an additional 2d8 radiant (scaling with slot level), doubled on a crit. Keep a couple of spell smites prepared too: Searing Smite (ongoing fire) and Branding Smite (extra radiant plus it reveals invisible targets). Thunderous Smite is your Honour Mode opener. Cast it from stealth to trigger a surprise-round knockback.
Prepared spells to prioritize (oath spells listed separately, since they’re free):
- Level 1: Oath: Shield of Faith, Compelled Duel. Prepared: Command, Divine Favour, Searing Smite
- Level 2: Oath: Protection from Evil and Good, Sanctuary, Lesser Restoration, Magic Weapon. Prepared: Hold Person, Branding Smite
- Level 3: Prepared: Blinding Smite, Crusader’s Mantle
Command makes an enemy drop its weapon or drop prone one of the best control spells in the game), Bless (up every fight; it stacks with Sacred Weapon), and Hold Person (paralyze a humanoid; melee hits on a held target are automatic crits, which combos perfectly with a smite). Find a Life Cleric that can cast Bless and Hold Person for you.
Channel Oath abilities
- Holy Rebuke (level 1): mark yourself or an ally; anyone who hits them in melee takes radiant damage back. Situational, but good when you expect to be swarmed.
- Sacred Weapon (level 3): your weapon sheds light and adds your Charisma modifier to attack rolls. Cast it before combat when you can, since it lasts until you lose concentration and saves you an action. This is the build’s defining button.
- Turn the Unholy (level 3): forces nearby undead and fiends to flee, useful in Act 2’s undead-heavy zones.
Multiclass Options
Pure Paladin 12 (recommended). This is the meta default for Devotion and the cleanest build in the game. You keep all three auras (Protection, Devotion, Courage), Improved Divine Smite at 11, and three feats. Devotion specifically wants to stay pure because Sacred Weapon and the auras all scale with staying a full Paladin, and you never miss the burst.
Paladin 6 / Sorcerer 6 (Sorcadin), or Paladin 6 / Bard 6 (Bardadin). If you want a higher damage ceiling, the classic Paladin multiclasses trade your top-tier auras for a massive pool of spell slots to fuel more Divine Smites. The Sorcadin adds metamagic (Quickened Spell for two smite attacks in a turn); the Bardadin adds the largest slot pool in the game. Both out-damage pure Devotion but give up Aura of Courage, Improved Divine Smite, and some durability. Covered in full in our dedicated Sorcadin and Bardadin guides.
Paladin 2 as a dip. Two Paladin levels (Divine Smite plus a fighting style) is one of the best dips in the game for any Charisma class; if you searched here from a Sorcerer or Bard build, that’s why.
Withers respecs for 100 gold, so all of these are cheap to test.
Action Economy & Buff Stacking

Before combat, make sure to pre-buff: coat weapon in Oil, use an Elixir, activate Sacred Weapon, turn on Aura of Protection, and cast Bless if you have a caster or a spare slot. If you can open a fight from stealth, lead with a Thunderous Smite attack for a surprise-round knockback.
Each turn:
- Action → Extra Attack for two weapon swings, each with Great Weapon Master. Apply Divine Smite as a reaction on the swing that hits hardest (or the one that crits).
- Bonus Action → Great Weapon Master attack if you scored a kill or crit.
- Reaction → Divine Smite on a big hit (set it to “Ask” so you’re not wasting slots on trash mobs).
Sacred Weapon and Aura up before the fight, then two accurate greatsword swings a turn with a smite on the best hit. On a held or prone target, every hit is a crit, and a crit-smite is your single biggest damage spike. Don’t dump spell slots on weak enemies; save them for the smite that ends a boss.
The Sacred Weapon & Divine Smite Engine

Devotion’s damage comes from a simple, reliable loop that never misses: guarantee the hit, then convert a spell slot into a burst.
Step one: guarantee accuracy. Sacred Weapon adds your Charisma modifier to attack rolls, and Great Weapon Fighting plus Bless stack on top. This is what lets you leave Great Weapon Master’s +10-damage / -5-accuracy toggle on permanently; the accuracy penalty is fully covered, so you get the +10 damage for free on every swing.
Step two: set up a crit. Hold Person (use Shadowheart Cleric) paralyzes a humanoid, and every melee hit against a held target is an automatic critical. On a crit, all your weapon dice, your Improved Divine Smite 1d8, and your Divine Smite dice double at once.
Step three: smite the crit. Spend your highest spell slot on Divine Smite as a reaction to that guaranteed crit. With a two-handed greatsword, Great Weapon Master’s +10, a doubled smite, doubled Improved Divine Smite, and a Half-Orc’s Savage Attacks bonus die, a single hit can deal enormous damage, enough to delete most bosses in one strike.
Why Devotion does this better than other oaths. Sacred Weapon means you never need to chase accuracy through Advantage or risk a miss on your big turn. Other paladins can hit this ceiling too, but Devotion is the only one that guarantees the setup every single fight with a Channel Oath charge.
Gear Progression Path – Oath of Devotion Paladin build

| Weapon 2 | Hellrider Longbow | Massive +3 to Initiative bonus. | Purchased from Ferg Drogher in Rivington. |
Note: Killer’s Sweetheart plus a queued Divine Smite is your boss-deleting combo; kill any enemy, your next hit is a guaranteed crit, and you smite it for doubled damage. Sarevok’s Helmet stacks more crit chance on top.
Risky Ring: permanent Advantage on all attacks, at the cost of disadvantage on your own saves. It carries the STR Vengeance build, and it works here too. The one nuance for Devotion specifically: you already have Sacred Weapon adding your Charisma to hit, so you need the Risky Ring’s accuracy.
Its real value to you is that Advantage roughly doubles your crit chance, which feeds every Divine Smite. Your Aura of Protection and high saves also soften the disadvantage-on-saves downside. If you’d rather not risk the saves, keep the Callous Glow Ring in that slot instead; the build functions fully either way.
Potions, Elixirs, and Consumables
Only one elixir can be active at a time, so pick with intent.
- Elixir of Bloodlust: an extra action after your first kill each turn; superb on a two-attack smiter that finishes enemies constantly. The default daily.
- Elixir of Hill / Cloud Giant Strength: sets Strength to 21 or 27; take this if you’d rather not invest your feats in Strength and want to push Charisma instead.
- Potion of Speed: an extra action and +2 AC for a burst turn; save it for a boss.
- Always carry: Oil of Sharpness or Oil of Accuracy before a big smite turn, plus a few healing potions.
Illithid Powers and Synergies

- Luck of the Far Realms: force a critical hit once per long rest; on a Paladin with a smite queued, a forced crit doubles your entire damage stack at once. The single best power for this build.
- Favourable Beginnings: a bonus on your first attack against a new target, keeping your opening strikes reliable.
- Cull the Weak: free finishing damage on enemies your swings leave wounded, which feeds the Elixir of Bloodlust kill trigger.
- Black Hole: pulls a pack into one cluster for your Improved Divine Smite and Crusader’s Mantle to hit everything.
Permanent Bonus Tracker

| Item | Act | How | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auntie Ethel’s Hair | 1 | Deal with Auntie Ethel | +1 to a stat; Strength or Charisma |
| Everlasting Vigour | 2 | Araj Oblodra | +2 Strength; toward 20 without a feat |
| Mirror of Loss | 3 | House of Grief | +2 to a stat; Strength to 22 |
Party Synergies

The Devotion Paladin is a durable frontline damage dealer whose Aura of Protection makes the whole party tankier, so build around allies who capitalize on the space you hold and the saves you grant.
- Support (Shadowheart): Play her as a Life Cleric with Bless and Healing.
- A controller (Gale Wizard): Have him focused on Fireball and large AOE damage spells.
- Rogue Melee (Astarion as Multiclass): Use Astarion Rogue dual-wield for utility and huge sneak attack criticals.
Recommended four-person party: Devotion Paladin (you, as face) + a controller-caster + a support build + another damage dealer.
Honour Mode Tips
- Pre-buff before every fight. Activate Sacred Weapon and Aura of Protection, apply an oil to your weapon, and drink your elixir before you trigger combat.
- Open from stealth with Thunderous Smite to trigger a surprise round; you get a full turn of damage before the enemy acts.
- Set Divine Smite to “Ask” so you never waste a high-level slot on a trash mob; save your slots for the crit that ends a boss.
- Turn your auras on manually. Aura of Protection, Devotion, and Courage do not auto-activate; check they’re on at the start of a tough fight.
- Lead with Command on the most dangerous enemy to strip its turn while your party focuses it down. Use drop weapon or prone depending on their gear.
BG3 Oath of Devotion Paladin Build FAQ
1. Is the Oath of Devotion Paladin good in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Yes. It’s the most reliable single-class Paladin, with Sacred Weapon guaranteeing your accuracy, Divine Smite providing the best martial burst in the game, and three auras making your whole party tankier. It’s the best Paladin for a first playthrough and excellent in Honour Mode.
2. Should Devotion Paladin use Strength or Charisma for weapons?
This build uses Strength for weapon attacks and Charisma as its second stat (for Sacred Weapon, spell DC, and Aura of Protection). You can instead go the Hexblade Warlock multiclass route to use Charisma for weapons and dump Strength, but the pure Strength build is simpler and keeps all your auras.
3. What’s the best weapon for a Devotion Paladin?
A two-handed greatsword for maximum Great Weapon Master and smite crit damage; Balduran’s Giantslayer in Act 3 is best-in-slot. If you prefer a shield for survivability, a one-handed setup works but lowers your damage.
4. Is Devotion better than Vengeance or Oathbreaker?
Devotion is the most consistent and beginner-friendly, with the best auras. Vengeance has higher burst (especially multiclassed with Fighter), and Oathbreaker has a damage aura for an evil playthrough. Devotion wins on reliability and party support.
5. Should I multiclass a Devotion Paladin?
Stay pure 12 for the auras and Improved Divine Smite. If you want a higher damage ceiling and don’t mind losing Aura of Courage, a Paladin 6 / Sorcerer 6 Sorcadin or Paladin 6 / Bard 6 Bardadin hits harder.
6. What are the best feats for a Devotion Paladin?
Great Weapon Master first for the damage, then Ability Improvement into Strength (to 20), then Ability Improvement into Charisma for a stronger aura and Sacred Weapon.
