The Oath of the Ancients Paladin focuses on preserving the sanctity of life and the “beauty of nature.” This subclass gives you a few unique features, including immobilization, mobility, and survivability spells. Players who value nature and still want to play a Paladin and not a Druid should check out this setup.
Ancients’ signature aura, Aura of Warding, halves all spell damage for you and every nearby ally, which is the single best anti-magic effect in the game. It turns the fireballs and lightning that shred most parties into minor inconveniences. With this build, we will use a multiclass setup dipping into the Warlock Hexblade to gain more versatile spells and the Shield reaction. Let’s walk you through the best setup for the Oath of the Ancients Paladin below.
This build guide is updated for Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8, Community Update #36, Version Number: 4.1.1.7209685.
BG3 Oath of the Ancients Build Summary

| Choice | Selection |
|---|---|
| Classes | Paladin (10), Warlock (2) |
| Best Race | Half-Orc (alt: Gold Dwarf, Githyanki) |
| Key Ability | Strength, then Charisma |
| Best Feats | Great Weapon Master, Savage Attacker |
| Core Combo | Aura of Warding halving enemy spell damage while short-rest Warlock slots let you Divine Smite every fight |
| Difficulty to Play | 3 / 5 |
| Shines In | Long attrition fights and spell-heavy encounters (Act 3 casters, elemental bosses) |
Why Use the Oath of the Ancients Build?

The Oath of Ancients Paladin shines against spellcasters and when you need mobility. You can stack multiple Auras, and even half-spells, making huge incoming damage much weaker. Plus, you get Misty Step and other non-Paladin-like spells. Moreover, if you want to roleplay as a nature-loving wielder of justice, this is your subclass. Here’s what you can expect from the Ancients Paladin in BG3:
- Aura of Warding halves all spell damage. For you and every nearby ally. Fireball, Chain Lightning- all cut in half for the whole party. Against the caster-heavy fights of Act 3 and elemental bosses, this single aura can decide the encounter.
- Two auras stack for absurd party defense. Aura of Warding (half spell damage) plus Aura of Protection (add Charisma to all nearby saves) means your team barely takes magic damage and rarely fails a save. No other build protects a party from magic like this.
- The Warlock dip adds short-rest smite slots and Shield. Two Hexblade Warlock levels give you Pact Magic slots that recharge on a short rest (so you Divine Smite far more often per day), the Shield spell (+5 AC reaction to dodge a hit), Eldritch Blast with Agonizing Blast as a Charisma-scaling ranged option, and two Eldritch Invocations including Devil’s Sight for the Darkness combo.
- Full smite damage underneath. This is still a Strength two-hander with Great Weapon Master and Extra Attack; it’s durable and deals real damage.
A downside to this build is splitting your levels between two classes to gain more power. The Warlock split delays your Paladin progression, so you miss out on Improved Divine Smite, and you rely on the aura rather than raw burst. Ancients is a defensive oath, so its damage ceiling is below Vengeance’s. Its Channel Oath options (Nature’s Wrath, Healing Radiance) are useful but unspectacular. This is an endurance build. Ancients wins long fights like those in Act 3 (Ansur the Dragon).
Oath of the Ancients Paladin Build Character Creation

| Choice | Selection |
|---|---|
| Class | Paladin (start here) |
| Subclass | Oath of the Ancients |
| Best Race | Half-Orc |
| Background | Soldier |
| Ability Scores | STR 17 DEX 10 CON 14 INT 8 WIS 8 CHA 16 |
| Skill Proficiencies | Persuasion, Insight |
Best Race for the Oath of the Ancients Build

Half-Orc racial choice is the best due to Savage Attacks, which boosts every crit (and your smites double on crits), and Relentless Endurance. No other race gains higher damage and survivability with one pick. Plus, you gain Misty Step from your subclass oath spells, making Githyanki less appealing.
The alternative choices are Gold Dwarf and Githyanki. Gold Dwarf for even more HP and poison resistance (leaning fully into endurance), or Githyanki for free Misty Step to reposition your auras where the party needs them.
Best Ability Scores (point buy) for Oath of the Ancients Build

Set your ability scores to Strength 17, Charisma 16, Constitution 14 at character creation, dumping Intelligence and Wisdom. Strength drives weapon damage, while Charisma powers both your auras’ effectiveness and your spell save DC. Plus, using the Warlock class, your spells will benefit from Charisma and you need a decent bit of Constitution for concentration saving throws.
Grab Auntie Ethel’s Hair for +1 to Strength (to 18). Don’t use feats to get Strength to 20. You can use Elixirs of Hill Giant or Gauntlets found in Act 3 for a massive Strength boost. Plus, you can get two more strength-based permanent bonuses, giving you 22 Strength if you get them all.
Start as Paladin because saving-throw proficiencies come only from your first class, and Paladin grants the excellent Wisdom and Charisma saves you want. Take Paladin at level 1 and add the two Warlock levels later.
Best Background

Soldier is the best background because you gain Athletics and Intimidation skills. Plus, it fits the melee burster style. Another option is Noble if you want a higher Charisma style and party face.
Best Skills

If you picked the Soldier background, the two most important skills are Persuasion and Insight. You want both Persuasion and Intimidation so your dialogue has two options to bypass quests.
Leveling Progression – Oath of the Ancients Build
Oath spells are granted for free and are always prepared. Below are the selections you should take and what you unlock at each level.
| Level | Features Unlocked | Spell Selection | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (Paladin 1) | Oath of the Ancients; Lay on Hands; Divine Sense; heavy armor + martial weapons | Start Paladin for Con/Wis/Cha saving-throw proficiency | |
| 2 (Paladin 2) | Fighting Style: Great Weapon Fighting; Divine Smite; spellcasting | Prepared: Wrathful Smite, Thunderous Smite, Divine Favour, Command, Cure Wounds | Select your spells to prepare in spellbook (five). |
| 3 (Paladin 3) | Channel Oath: Nature’s Wrath & Turn the Faithless; Divine Health | Add: Shield of Faith | Oath: Ensnaring Strike, Speak with Animals |
| 4 (Paladin 4) | Feat: Great Weapon Master | Add: Bless | Leave the +10 toggle on |
| 5 (Paladin 5) | Extra Attack | Add: Magic Weapon | Oath: Misty Step, Moonbeam; power spike |
| 6 (Paladin 6) | Aura of Protection (add CHA to nearby saves) | Add: Branding Smite | Turn it on manually |
| 7 (Paladin 7) | Aura of Warding (half spell damage for you and allies) | Add: Aid | The signature aura; the reason to play Ancients |
| 8 (Paladin 8) | Feat: Savage Attacker (or +2 STR ASI) | Add: Lesser Restoration | Take Savage Attacker if you have permanent bonuses in Act 1/2 |
| 9 (Paladin 9) | Level 3 spells | Add: Elemental Weapon | Oath: Protection from Energy, Plant Growth |
| 10 (Paladin 10) | Aura of Courage (fear immunity for you and allies) | Add: Warden of Vitality | Third aura online |
| 11 (Warlock 1) | Warlock: Pact Magic (short-rest slots); Hexblade’s Curse | Cantrips: Eldritch Blast, Booming Blade; Spell: Hex | Multiclass into Hexblade Warlock |
| 12 (Warlock 2) | Eldritch Invocations; second Pact Magic slot | Invocations: Agonizing Blast, Devil’s Sight; Spell: Armour of Agathys | Short-rest slots become extra Divine Smites |
Here are the most critical choices for you to pick and why:
- Level 2: Great Weapon Fighting. Rerolls low damage dice on your greatsword; the standard two-hander pick.
- Level 4: Great Weapon Master. The +10-damage toggle; leave it on and cover the accuracy with Bless and Advantage sources. Defines your damage.
- Level 7: Aura of Warding. Half spell damage for you and every nearby ally; turn it on, and your party laughs off enemy magic.
- Warlock 2: short-rest smite slots. Your two Pact Magic slots recharge on a short rest and always cast at their highest level, so they become extra Divine Smites you can spend every fight and refill twice a day. The Shield spell from Warlock 1 also lets you react for +5 AC to dodge a would-be killing blow, and Devil’s Sight plus a Darkness cloud lets you attack with Advantage while enemies flail Blinded.
Best Spells, Smites & Channel Oath

Use your spell slots with Divine Smite when you attack with a melee weapon. Both your Paladin slots and your short-rest Warlock Pact Magic slots. Therefore, you can smite more often across a day. Keep Branding Smite and Searing Smite prepared, and Thunderous Smite as your stealth opener.
Prepared spells to prioritize (oath spells free; Warlock spells noted):
- Level 1; Oath: Ensnaring Strike, Speak with Animals. Paladin prepared: Command, Divine Favour. Warlock: Shield, Hex, Eldritch Blast
- Level 2; Oath: Misty Step, Moonbeam. Paladin prepared: Branding Smite, Lesser Restoration
- Level 3; Paladin prepared: Blinding Smite, Revivify
Shield (the Warlock reaction; +5 AC to turn a hit into a miss, a huge survivability spike), Command (on-demand stun), Misty Step (free from the oath; mobility), and Moonbeam (movable damaging light for area control).
Channel Oath abilities:
- Healing Radiance (level 1): heal yourself and all nearby allies now, and again next turn. This is an efficient party sustain from one Channel Oath charge.
- Nature’s Wrath (level 3): restrains an enemy (it can’t move and is easy to hit); a solid single-target lockdown.
- Turn the Faithless (level 3): forces nearby fey and fiends to flee; situationally strong in the right fights.
Multiclass Options
This build is Paladin 10 / Warlock 2 (Hexblade), kept light so you retain your key Ancients features. Here’s the logic:
- Paladin 10 gives you Extra Attack (level 5), Aura of Protection (level 6), your signature Aura of Warding (level 7), Aura of Courage (level 10), and two feats. Ten levels keeps the whole aura package that defines Ancients.
- Warlock 2 (Hexblade) gives you Pact Magic spell slots that recharge on a short rest, Hexblade’s Curse (bonus damage and easier crits on a marked target), the Shield spell (+5 AC reaction), Eldritch Blast plus two Eldritch Invocations, and access to spells like Hex, Armour of Agathys, and Darkness. Charisma is the Warlock casting stat, which you already raise for your auras, so the dip costs no extra stat investment.
Warlock spell slots come back on a short rest, and they always cast at their highest level. A Paladin’s Divine Smite works with any spell slot, so those recharging Warlock slots become extra smites you can spend every fight and refill twice a day. That is a meaningful boost to a smite build’s damage output across a full adventuring day, and it’s something a Sorcerer dip cannot match.
Why Warlock 2 and not Sorcerer 2? A Sorcerer does not get Metamagic until its third level, so a two-level Sorcerer dip gives you Sorcery Points with nothing worthwhile to spend them on. The Quickened Spell trick people associate with Sorcadins needs Sorcerer 3, which would cost you a Paladin level and one of your auras. Warlock, by contrast, front-loads its value: at just two levels you already have short-rest smite slots, Shield, Eldritch Blast with Agonizing Blast, and two invocations. For a light two-level dip, Warlock is strictly the better splash here.

The two Eldritch Invocations to take are Agonizing Blast (adds your Charisma modifier to every Eldritch Blast beam, giving you a real ranged attack for when you can’t reach a target) and Devil’s Sight (see through magical Darkness out to 24m). Devil’s Sight enables a powerful combo: stand inside a Darkness cloud and you attack with Advantage while enemies inside are Blinded and attack you at Disadvantage. You don’t even have to cast Darkness yourself; have a party member cast it, or use a Scroll of Darkness, and keep both of your own invocation picks for their passive value.
Charisma is your Warlock casting stat, which you’re already raising for your auras, so the dip costs you no extra stat investment; another reason Warlock fits cleanly.
Leveling order: go Paladin all the way to 10 for the full three-aura package (Extra Attack at 5, Aura of Protection at 6, Aura of Warding at 7, Aura of Courage at 10), then take the two Warlock levels last. Finish at Paladin 10 / Warlock 2.
Action Economy & Buff Stacking

Before combat, make sure to pre-buff with an Elixir, coating your weapon with oils, turn on Aura of Protection and Aura of Warding, cast Bless, and if you can, then stealth. Attack from stealth with a Thunderous Smite. If a party member drops a Darkness cloud on you, your Devil’s Sight lets you fight from inside it at Advantage.
A big turn:
- Bonus action → Hexblade’s Curse on the target (bonus damage and easier crits against it), or cast Hex to stack extra damage on every hit.
- Action → two Extra Attack greatsword swings, use Divine Smite as a reaction on the best hit.
- Reaction (later) → Shield to negate an incoming hit, or Divine Smite on a crit.
Keep both auras up, swing twice a turn with Great Weapon Master, use Command or Nature’s Wrath to lock down a threat, and hold Shield for the scariest incoming attack. Healing Radiance tops the party up when they’ve taken chip damage.
The rhythm: you’re the durable anchor who also smites. Auras up, Curse the priority target, spend your Paladin and short-rest Warlock slots on Divine Smites, and lean on Shield and Aura of Warding to shrug off the damage that would drop a squishier frontliner.

Note: because Aura of Warding already halves spell damage, you can afford to prioritize offensive gear (Risky Ring, Killer’s Sweetheart, Giantslayer) over extra defensive pieces; your durability is baked into your auras and the Warlock Shield spell, freeing your item slots for damage. The Risky Ring pairs especially well here: its disadvantage-on-saves downside is softened by Aura of Warding (half spell damage) and Aura of Protection (Charisma to all saves), so you get the permanent Advantage with little of the risk.
Potions, Elixirs, and Consumables
Only one elixir active at a time.
- Elixir of Bloodlust: an extra action after your first kill; strong on a two-attack smiter. A common default.
- Elixir of Peerless Focus: concentration immunity; useful when you’re holding Moonbeam or a smite-spell concentration through heavy fire.
- Elixir of Hill / Cloud Giant Strength: set Strength to 21 / 27 if you’d rather spend feats elsewhere.
- Always carry: Oil of Sharpness before a smite turn, plus healing potions.
Illithid Powers and Synergies

- Luck of the Far Realms: force a crit once per long rest; drop it on a Divine Smite for a doubled smite spike.
- Favourable Beginnings: a bonus on your first hit against a target; reliable openers.
- Cull the Weak: free finishing damage that feeds the Elixir of Bloodlust kill trigger.
- Fly / Black Hole: Fly repositions your auras to cover the whole party; Black Hole clusters enemies into your Moonbeam and melee range.
Permanent Bonus Tracker

| Item | Act | How | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auntie Ethel’s Hair | 1 | Deal with Auntie Ethel | +1 to a stat; Strength or Charisma |
| Everlasting Vigour | 2 | Araj Oblodra | +2 Strength; toward 20 without a feat |
| Mirror of Loss | 3 | House of Grief | +2 to a stat; Strength to 22 |
Party Synergies

Ancients is the anti-magic anchor, so it’s at its best protecting a party against the exact threats that usually wipe groups.
- Support (Shadowheart): Play her as Life Cleric with Bless and Healing.
- A controller (Gale Wizard): Have him focused on Ice Storm and large AOE damage spells.
- Rogue Melee (Astarion as Multiclass): Use Astarion Rogue dual-wield for utility and huge sneak attack criticals.
Ancients Paladin (you, as anchor) + a burst caster (who loves your auras) + a supporter + a flex damage dealer. You make the whole party immune to being magic-bursted.
Honour Mode Tips
- Turn on both auras every fight. Aura of Warding and Aura of Protection don’t auto-activate; against any caster or elemental encounter, they’re the difference between a clean win and a wipe.
- Hold Shield for the killing blow. The Warlock reaction’s +5 AC can turn a lethal crit into a miss; don’t waste it on trash.
- Open from stealth with Thunderous Smite for a surprise round.
- Short rest before boss fights to refill your Warlock Pact Magic slots so you have the extra smites ready.
- Position your auras. Stand where the most allies are inside the radius, especially before an enemy’s big AOE turn.
- Cast or scroll Darkness on yourself against ranged-heavy packs; with Devil’s Sight, you fight freely while they’re Blinded.
Oath of the Ancients Paladin Build FAQ
1. Is the Oath of the Ancients Paladin good in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Yes. It’s the most durable Paladin, thanks to Aura of Warding halving all spell damage for the whole party. Multiclassed with a light Hexblade Warlock dip for short-rest smite slots and the Shield spell, it’s an endurance powerhouse that still deals real two-handed smite damage. It shines in spell-heavy fights.
2. Why multiclass Ancients with Warlock instead of Sorcerer?
A two-level Warlock dip is incredibly strong. Pact Magic slots that recharge on a short rest (extra Divine Smites every fight), the Shield spell (+5 AC), Eldritch Blast with Agonizing Blast, and two invocations. A two-level Sorcerer dip, by contrast, gives Sorcery Points but no Metamagic (that needs Sorcerer 3), so it does far less at only two levels. Warlock is the better choice.
3. Should the Ancients Paladin use a two-handed weapon or shield?
This build uses a two-handed greatsword for smite-crit damage, relying on Aura of Warding and the Warlock’s Shield spell for defense instead of a physical shield. If you’d rather a shield tank, the Oath of the Crown build is the better fit.
4. Is Ancients better than Devotion or Vengeance?
Ancients is the most durable and the best against enemy magic. Devotion is the most consistent pure build, while Vengeance has the highest burst. Pick Ancients when you want a party-wide anti-magic anchor that still smites.
5. What order do I take the multiclass levels?
Start Paladin (for saving-throw proficiencies) and go to Paladin 10 for all three auras, then take the two Warlock levels last. Paladin 10 / Warlock 2 total.
6. What are the best feats for an Ancients Paladin?
Great Weapon Master first for damage, then Ability Improvement to Strength 20 (or Savage Attacker for consistency). Because the Warlock dip takes two levels, you get two Paladin feats; spend them on damage and let your auras handle defense.
