The signature ability of the Crown subclass is Champion Challenge. This is effectively an AOE Taunt, which makes enemies attack you or face a disadvantage penalty. Combine that with Compelled Duel, and you have two methods for attracting enemies’ attention.
This feeds into the second part of the build, which is using Spiritual Guardian and Radiant Orb gear to debuff their attack rolls. You hold concentration, move into the enemies’ lines, and force them to attack. If you debuff enough, they won’t be able to hit you due to lower attack rolls, making not only you, but your entire team invincible. If you enjoy a simple, tanky, and support Paladin build, this is for you.
This build guide is updated for Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8, Community Update #36, Version Number: 4.1.1.7209685.

Why Use the Oath of the Crown Paladin Build?

The main reason you want to use the Oath of the Crown Paladin over other subclasses is it’s surviability and pure tank focus. Unlike the other subclasses, which favor a two-handed Greatsword and Strength, the Crown Paladin uses a one-handed weapon and shield and fits nicely as a support character. You can heal, debuff, deal good damage, and keep your party alive. If you enjoy the holy trinity: healer, tank, DPS, then this is your ideal subclass. Here’s what you can expect with an Oath of the Crown build setup in BG3:
- Champion Challenge forces enemies onto you. A Channel Oath taunt that applies a penalty to any nearby enemy who attacks someone other than you; you physically pull threats off your casters and archers.
- Highest AC in the roster. A one-handed weapon plus a shield plus heavy armor plus the Defence fighting style stacks an AC most enemies simply can’t hit.
- Aura of Protection buffs the whole party. Add your Charisma modifier to every nearby ally’s saving throws; combined with Crown’s protective spells, your team shrugs off the crowd control that ends Honour Mode runs.
- Spirit Guardians as an oath spell. Crown is the only Paladin that gets this Cleric staple: a damaging aura that ticks on every enemy stuck attacking you, adding damage and slowing them while you tank.
Crown trades damage for defense; it will not match Vengeance’s burst or Devotion’s smite ceiling. Divine Allegiance (its level-7 reaction heal) costs you your own HP. And a taunt tank only shines when the party actually has squishy allies worth protecting; in a party of other tanks, some of its value is wasted. This is a support-tank, not a damage dealer.
Oath of the Crown Paladin Build Character Creation

| Choice | Selection |
|---|---|
| Character | Tav |
| Class | Paladin (12) |
| Subclass | Oath of the Crown |
| Best Race | Gold Dwarf |
| Background | Soldier |
| Ability Scores | STR 14 DEX 10 CON 17 INT 8 WIS 8 CHA 16 |
| Skill Proficiencies | Insight, Persuasion |
Best Race for the Oath of the Crown Paladin Build

Gold Dwarf is the best race for this build because of Dwarven Toughness. This grants extra HP every level (a large pool by level 12). Plus, you get Dwarven Resilience, which gives poison resistance, and Darkvision. More effective HP is exactly what a taunt-tank wants, since you’re the one soaking every hit.
Alternatives: Half-Orc if you want more offensive punch (Savage Attacks for the occasional smite crit), or Githyanki for free Misty Step to reach and body-block for a threatened ally.
Best Ability Scores (point buy) for Oath of the Crown Paladin Build

Instead of stacking Strength, the Crown Paladin wants to max out Constitution at 17 in character creation. This helps with HP and, most importantly, concentration saving throws on Spirit Guardians. Next, keep your Strength at 14, which can be increased with an Elixir or in Act 3 with Gauntlets. Lastly, keep Dex at 10 and use heavy armor, dumping Intelligence and Wisdom with 16 Charisma for spellcasting.
Grab Auntie Ethel’s Hair for +1 to increase Constitution to 18 in Act 1. Why Constitution over Strength here: as the tank, you hold Spirit Guardians concentration through incoming fire and soak the party’s damage, so HP and concentration matter more than squeezing out extra weapon damage. This is the one Paladin build where Strength isn’t the top priority.
Best Background

Soldier is the best background because you gain Athletics and Intimidation skills. Another option is Noble if you want a higher Charisma style and party face.
Best Skills

If you picked the Soldier background, the two most important skills are Persuasion and Insight. You want both Persuasion and Intimidation so your dialogue has two options to bypass quests.
Leveling Progression – Oath of the Crown Paladin Build
Oath spells are granted free and are always prepared; they never count against your prepared-spell limit.
| Level | Unlocks and Feats | Oath Spells | Spell Selections |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Oath of the Crown; Lay on Hands; Righteous Clarity; heavy armor + martial weapons | ||
| 2 | Fighting Style: Defence (+1 AC); Divine Smite; spellcasting | Prepared: Thunderous Smite, Cure Wounds, Shield of Faith, Bless, Divine Favour | |
| 3 | Channel Oath: Turn the Tide; Divine Health, Champion Challenge | Command, Compelled Duel | Add: Searing Smite |
| 4 | Feat: War Caster | Lay on Hands Charges | Add: Wrathful Smite |
| 5 | Extra Attack | Spiritual Weapon, Warding Bond | Add: Branding Smite |
| 6 | Aura of Protection (add CHA to nearby saves) | Add: Aid | |
| 7 | Divine Allegiance (reaction: take an ally’s damage for them) | Add: Lesser Restoration | |
| 8 | Feat: ASI +2 Con | Add: Magic Weapon | |
| 9 | Level 3 spells | Spirit Guardians, Warden of Vitality | Add: Daylight |
| 10 | Aura of Courage (fear immunity for you and allies) | Add: Revivify | |
| 11 | Improved Divine Smite (+1d8 radiant on every melee hit) | Add: Blinding Smite | |
| 12 | Feat: Alert | Add: Remove Curse |
Here are the most critical choices for you to pick and why:
- Level 1: Champion Challenge. Taunt the enemy pack so they can’t freely attack your squishy allies; use it on turn one in any fight where the party is threatened.
- Level 2: Defence fighting style. +1 AC that stacks with your shield and heavy armor. Every point of AC matters on a taunt-tank that wants to be missed.
- Level 4: War Caster. Advantage on concentration saving throws, so your Spirit Guardians stays up while you soak hits in melee. This is the feat that makes the whole debuff engine reliable, since the engine only works while your aura is running.
- Level 6: Aura of Protection. Turns your whole party’s saving throws up by your Charisma modifier; on a support-tank this is arguably more valuable than on any other Paladin.
- Level 8: Ability Improvement (+2 Constitution). More HP and better concentration saves; on a tank holding Spirit Guardians through heavy fire, raw Constitution is worth more than a utility feat.
- Level 12: Alert. +5 initiative so you get Champion Challenge and Spirit Guardians up before the enemy acts; controlling the fight from turn one is exactly what a taunt-tank wants.
Best Spells, Smites & Channel Oath

You still have Divine Smite for burst when a slot is spare, but as a tank you’ll often keep your slots for Spirit Guardians rather than dumping them all on damage. Keep Searing Smite for a little extra sticky damage on the enemy you’re tanking.
Prepared spells to prioritize (oath spells free):
- Level 1: Oath: Command, Compelled Duel. Prepared: Bless, Shield of Faith, Divine Favour
- Level 2: Oath: Warding Bond, Spiritual Weapon. Prepared: Hold Person, Aid
- Level 3: Oath: Spirit Guardians. Prepared: Revivify, Remove Curse

The must-haves: Spirit Guardians active and holding Concentration. This is not only your damage source, but ticking constantly debuffs enemies with recommended gear sets listed below. Command an Action that orders one enemy to drop its weapon or Grovel, falling Prone and doing nothing; a strong single-target lockdown.
Channel Oath abilities:
- Champion Challenge (level 1): the pack taunt. Any nearby enemy that tries to move away from or attack past you is penalized; this is how you protect the backline.
- Turn the Tide (level 3): a party-wide burst heal, rally your team back up from the brink in one Channel Oath charge.
Multiclass Options
Pure Paladin 12 (recommended). Crown wants to stay pure. Champion Challenge, Divine Allegiance, Aura of Protection, Aura of Courage, Improved Divine Smite, plus Spirit Guardians from the oath list are all through Paladin’s levels. A tank benefits from the full three-aura package and three feats (War Caster, an Ability Improvement into Constitution, and Alert).
Paladin 10 / Cleric 2 (variant). A two-level dip into Life or War Cleric adds a second source of healing, more spell slots, and (with War) another bonus-action attack. You give up Improved Divine Smite and your level-12 feat, but gain more sustain; a reasonable variant if you want to lean even harder into support. For most players pure 12 is stronger and simpler.
Paladin 2 as a dip remains one of the best splashes in the game for a Charisma class, but that’s a different build; Crown specifically wants its higher-level oath features, so don’t dip out of it.
Withers respecs for 100 gold if you want to test the Cleric variant.
Action Economy & Buff Stacking
Before combat buff with an Elixir, coat your weapon with Oil and cast one Concentration spell. Bless if you’re not using Shadowheart or Spirit Guardians if you don’t plan on starting from stealth. If you can get in stealth, start with Thunderous Smite to trigger CC and Surprise’s status effect.
Opening turn:
- Action → cast Spirit Guardians so the damaging aura is up, or make your Extra Attack swings if enemies are already in reach.
- Channel Oath → Champion Challenge to taunt the pack onto you.
- Bonus Action → Compelled Duel on the single most dangerous enemy, or Lay on Hands to heal.
Ongoing:
- Action → two weapon swings (Extra Attack), smiting only when you have a slot to spare.
- Reaction → War Caster to cast a spell (or hold it for a concentration save); Divine Allegiance to soak a lethal hit for a friend; or Divine Smite on a crit.
- Keep Spirit Guardians concentration alive; your Constitution 17, War Caster, and Aura of Protection make that easy.
The rhythm: you are the anchor. Taunt, hold the line, keep Spirit Guardians ticking, and use your reactions to punish anything that tries to get past you to the party.
The Radiant Debuff Engine (Champion Challenge + Spirit Guardians + Radiating Orb)

Crown’s power isn’t a damage combo; it’s a control loop. This is the Light Cleric’s radiant engine, transplanted onto a heavy-armor taunt-tank.
Step one: force the enemy onto you. Champion Challenge penalizes any nearby enemy that attacks someone other than you, and Compelled Duel hard-locks a single priority target into fighting only you. Between the two, the dangerous enemies have to come to your shield instead of your casters.
Step two: debuff everything that’s now next to you. With the pack clustered on you, Spirit Guardians deals radiant damage to every one of them at the start of their turn, off a single concentration spell. That radiant tick is the trigger for your whole gear stack:
- Radiating Orb (from Luminous Armour, the Coruscation Ring, and the Callous Glow Ring) applies a stack every time you deal radiant damage; each stack is -1 to that enemy’s attack rolls, and they pile up fast. A few turns in, the taunted pack literally cannot hit anything.
- Reverberation (from the Gloves of Belligerent Skies applies on that same damage; at five stacks, the enemy is knocked Prone, losing its turn.
Step three: you can’t be hit anyway. Your stacked AC (shield + heavy armor + Defence fighting style) already makes you hard to hit, and the Radiating Orb stacks from the engine drop the whole pack’s accuracy toward zero on top of that. The rare attack that connects is softened by your huge HP pool (Gold Dwarf) and Constitution 17+. War Caster keeps your Spirit Guardians concentration alive through it all, and Divine Allegiance plus Warding Bond protect your squishiest ally.
The result: the enemy is forced to attack the one character built to be unhittable, gets its accuracy gets shredded (Radiating Orb). That’s how this Crown build wins an Honour Mode fight; not by out-damaging the enemy, but by taunting the whole pack into a light-wreathed grinder that makes them unable to do anything useful.
Gear Progression Path – Oath of the Crown Paladin Build

You wield a one-handed weapon with a shield, in the heaviest armor you can wear, and stack the Light Cleric’s radiant and reverberation gear so your Spirit Guardians debuffs everything it touches. One rule makes the engine work: the Coruscation Ring only applies Radiating Orb while you are Illuminated, so you must carry a light source. The cleanest way to keep heavy armor AND the radiant engine is to get your illumination from the Coldbrim Hat (or a self-cast Light cantrip, or the Blood of Lathander) instead of the medium Luminous Armour.

Potions, Elixirs, and Consumables
Only one elixir active at a time.
- Elixir of Peerless Focus: concentration can’t be broken; superb on a tank holding Spirit Guardians through heavy incoming fire. Often your default.
- Elixir of the Colossus or Hill Giant Strength: more size/HP or set Strength to 21; pick based on whether you want durability or a little more swing damage.
- Potion of Speed: an extra action and +2 AC for a clutch turn.
- Always carry: healing potions and a few Elixirs of Heroism for temporary HP before a big fight.
Illithid Powers and Synergies

- Shield of Thralls: grants temporary HP and can stun nearby enemies when it breaks; a natural fit for a tank standing in a crowd, and it protects your Spirit Guardians concentration.
- Psionic Backlash: punishes enemy casters near you (and you want them near you); can break a dangerous spell before it lands.
- Cull the Weak: free finishing damage on the enemies your Spirit Guardians leaves low.
- Black Hole: pulls the enemy pack into your Spirit Guardians aura and your taunt range at once; the ideal Crown setup power.
Permanent Bonus Tracker

Constitution and Charisma first for this tank; you’re not chasing Strength:
| Auntie Ethel’s Hair | 1 | Deal with Auntie Ethel | +1 to a stat; Constitution |
| Everlasting Vigour | 2 | Araj Oblodra | +2 Strength; free Strength without a feat |
| Mirror of Loss | 3 | Cloister of Sombre Embrace | +2 to Constitution for HP |
Party Synergies

Crown is the anchor that makes a glass-cannon party viable, so surround it with damage that needs protecting.
- Melee (Lae’zel Fighter): Keep Lae’zel near the front lines dealing massive damage.
- A controller (Gale Wizard): clusters enemies into Spirit Guardians while you handle sustain.
- Rogue Melee (Astarion as Multiclass): Use Astarion Rogue dual-wield for utility and huge sneak attack criticals.
Crown Paladin (you, as anchor) + a burst caster + a ranged damage dealer + a controller or flex damage dealer.
Honour Mode Tips
- Champion Challenge on turn one in any fight where the party is exposed; pulling aggro is worth more than a swing.
- Hold Spirit Guardians concentration with Constitution 17, War Caster, and (ideally) the Elixir of Peerless Focus; don’t let it drop. The whole radiant engine turns off if the aura drops.
- Turn all three auras on manually (Protection, Courage, plus your damaging Spirit Guardians) at the start of a hard fight.
- Use Athletics shoves to knock dangerous enemies off ledges; a tank’s best “damage” is often removing a threat entirely.
- Position as a wall. Stand in the chokepoint between the enemy and your backline so Champion Challenge and Spirit Guardians cover the most enemies.
Oath of the Crown Paladin Build FAQ
1. Is the Oath of the Crown Paladin good in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Yes. It’s the best dedicated tank and party-protector in the Paladin roster. Champion Challenge taunts enemies onto you, Aura of Protection buffs the whole party’s saves, and it uniquely gets Spirit Guardians as an oath spell. It’s excellent in Honour Mode, where keeping the party alive wins runs.
2. Should the Crown Paladin use a shield or two-handed weapon?
A one-handed weapon and shield, for maximum AC; the whole point of a taunt-tank is to be missed. If you want a two-handed damage Paladin instead, Devotion or Vengeance is the better fit.
3. Is Crown a good tank compared to other classes?
It’s one of the best tanks in the game because it combines high AC, a real taunt (Champion Challenge), party-wide save buffs (Aura of Protection), and Spirit Guardians for area damage, all in one character. Few tanks protect the party as actively.
4. Should I multiclass the Crown Paladin?
Stay pure Paladin 12 for the full aura package, Improved Divine Smite, and all three feats. A Paladin 10 / Cleric 2 dip adds sustain if you want to lean even harder into support, at the cost of Improved Divine Smite and a feat.
5. What are the best feats for a Crown Paladin?
War Caster is the standout; Advantage on concentration saves keeps your Spirit Guardians (and the whole radiant/reverb engine) running while you tank hits. Pair it with an Ability Improvement into Constitution for durability and Alert for initiative, so you get your aura up before the enemy moves.
6. Does Crown deal enough damage to solo content?
It’s a support-tank, so its damage is moderate: Spirit Guardians plus weapon swings and the occasional smite. It’s not a soloing powerhouse like Vengeance, but in a party it’s one of the strongest picks for keeping everyone alive.
