The Oath of Vengeance is the Paladin subclass that combines mobility, bonus action utility, and some of the highest single-target damage in BG3. When you pair it with a Fighter multiclass for Action Surge, you get a turn that can dump three or four smite-loaded greatsword swings into a boss in a single round.
Vengeance gets its identity from Vow of Enmity (Advantage against a chosen target for the whole fight) and early access to Misty Step, which solves the Paladin’s biggest weakness: mobility. Advantage on demand means your Great Weapon Master swings always connect, and it doubles your critical-hit chance.
This guide covers a Paladin 8 / Fighter 4 (Battle Master) build using Strength and a two-handed greatsword. The Fighter levels add Action Surge (a second full action), a fighting-style stack, and Battle Master maneuvers like Trip Attack to guarantee your crits. It’s the best “delete the boss on turn one” Paladin in the game.
This build guide is updated for Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8, Community Update #36, Version Number: 4.1.1.7209685.

Why Use the Oath of Vengeance Paladin Build?

Starting out as a Paladin, you’ll be starved of spells, mobility, with weak bonus action utility. The Vengeance Paladin solves all thoses especially, especially when you hit level 5. You gain the Misty Step spell, bonus action on-demand advantage, and hard-hitting melee attacks without Divine Smite. This makes the Paladin a well-rounded machine in BG3 and one of the most fun to play. Here’s what you can expect with the full Oath of Vengeance Paladin build in BG3:
- Vow of Enmity gives Advantage on demand. As a bonus action, mark a target and gain Advantage on every attack against it for the rest of combat, no concentration. Advantage covers Great Weapon Master’s -5 penalty and roughly doubles your crit rate.
- Action Surge doubles your turn. The Fighter 4 dip means once per short rest you take a second full action, four total greatsword swings in one turn, each able to carry a Divine Smite.
- Trip Attack guarantees your crits. A Battle Master maneuver that knocks the target prone; melee attacks against a prone enemy have Advantage and crit more, and a prone boss can’t escape your burst.
- Misty Step at Paladin 5 fixes mobility so you can reach the backline caster you want to delete.
Vengeance is the one Paladin oath with no combat aura of its own (it gets Aura of Protection). Splitting to Fighter 4 also delays your Paladin spell progression and caps you below Improved Divine Smite. This is a glass-cannon-leaning burst build, not a tanky support like Crown or Devotion.
Oath of Vengeance Paladin Build Character Creation

| Choice | Selection |
|---|---|
| Class | Paladin |
| Subclass | Oath of Vengeance |
| Best Race | Half-Orc |
| Background | Soldier |
| Ability Scores | STR 17 DEX 10 CON 14 INT 8 WIS 8 CHA 16 |
| Skill Proficiencies | Persuasion, Insight |
Best Race for the Oath of Vengeance Paladin Build

The Half-Orc is the best choice for a burst smite melee build because of Savage Attacks. Dealing an extra weapon die on every melee critical. With spells like Hold Person, you can crit on demand in melee range, making it by far the best for burst damage. An alternative is the Githyanki if you want a second Misty Step and incredible mobility or a Tiefling for a free smite spell.
Best Ability Scores (point buy) for Oath of Vengeance Paladin Build

Run Strength 17, Charisma 16, Constitution 14, and dump Intelligence and Wisdom. Strength drives your weapon damage; Charisma powers Aura of Protection, your spell save DC, and Vow of Enmity’s saving throws. Meanwhile, Constitution holds concentration on Hunter’s Mark and your smite spells.
Grab Auntie Ethel’s Hair in Act 1 for +1 to Strength (to 18); your Charisma is already 16 from creation for a strong Aura of Protection and Vow of Enmity DC. Feats and permanent boosts push Strength to 20 first for maximum weapon and smite damage.
Important: start as Paladin. Saving-throw proficiencies in Baldur’s Gate 3 come only from your first class. Paladin’s first level grants the crucial Wisdom and Charisma saves (and Constitution proficiency you want for concentration). Therefore, take Paladin at level 1 and add the Fighter levels later.
Best Background

Soldier is the best background because you gain Athletics and Intimidation skills. Plus, it fits the melee burster style. Another option is Noble if you want a higher Charisma style and party face.
Best Skills

If you picked the Soldier background, the two most important skills are Persuasion and Insight. You want both Persuasion and Intimidation so your dialogue has two options to bypass quests.
Leveling Progression – Oath of Vengeance Paladin Build
Oath spells are granted for free and are always prepared. The final-column notes track the recommendations.
| Level | Class | Selection | Why it’s Important |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Paladin 1 | Oath of Vengeance; Lay on Hands; Divine Sense; heavy armor + martial weapons | Start Paladin for Con/Wis/Cha saving-throw proficiency |
| 2 | Paladin 2 | Fighting Style: Great Weapon Fighting; Divine Smite; spellcasting; Spells: Command, Wrathful Smite, Thunderous Smite, Divine Favour, Cure Wounds | Oath: Bane, Hunter’s Mark |
| 3 | Paladin 3 | Channel Oath: Vow of Enmity & Inquisitor’s Might; Spell: Shield of Faith | Bonus Action Utility |
| 4 | Paladin 4 | Feat: Great Weapon Master; Spell: Searing Smite | Leave the +10 toggle on |
| 5 | Paladin 5 | Extra Attack; Spell: Magic Weapon | Oath: Misty Step, Hold Person; big power spike |
| 6 | Fighter 1 | Fighting Style: Defence; Fighter proficiencies | Second fighting style stacks with GWF |
| 7 | Fighter 2 | Action Surge | The core of the burst engine |
| 8 | Fighter 3 | Battle Master; maneuvers (Trip Attack, Riposte, Disarming Attack) | Superiority Dice |
| 9 | Paladin 6 | Aura of Protection (add CHA to nearby saves); Spells: Aid | Turn it on manually |
| 10 | Paladin 7 | Relentless Avenger (Vengeance passive); level-2 slots; Spells: Branding Smite | Oath: Misty Step already known |
| 11 | Paladin 8 | Feat: Ability Improvement (+2 STR, to 20); Spell: Lesser Restoration | Helps to swap Elixir for Bloodlust |
| 12 | Fighter 4 | Feat: Savage Attacker | Rerolls weapon damage dice; consistency |
Here are the most critical choices for you to pick and why:
- Level 2: Great Weapon Fighting. Rerolls low damage dice on your greatsword; the Fighter’s Defence style later stacks +1 AC on top.
- Level 5: Extra Attack: Grants two swings per action used. You can stack Potion of Speed, Elixir of Bloodlust, and Action Surge for an eight-swing mega turn!
- Fighter 2: Action Surge. The single reason to multiclass. A second full action means four greatsword swings in one turn, each able to carry a smite. This is your boss-deleting button.
- Fighter 3: Battle Master with Trip Attack. Knock the target prone so every follow-up hit has Advantage and crits; a prone boss can’t escape your Action Surge burst.
Level 11: Ability Improvement to Strength 20. Max weapon and smite damage. Your last feat (Fighter 4) can be Savage Attacker for consistency or +2 Charisma for a stronger aura.
Best Spells, Smites & Channel Oath

Divine Smite is your reaction burst, which spends a spell slot on a hit for 2d8+ radiant, doubled on a crit. Keep Branding Smite (extra radiant, reveals invisible) and Thunderous Smite (a knockback opener from stealth) prepared. Because you split to Fighter, you top out at level-2 Paladin slots, so your smites are efficient rather than huge; you make up for it with volume via Action Surge.
Prepared spells to prioritize (oath spells free):
- Level 1: Oath: Bane, Hunter’s Mark. Prepared: Command, Divine Favour, Thunderous Smite
- Level 2: Oath: Misty Step, Hold Person. Prepared: Branding Smite, Aid
Command (stun or drop their weapon), Hold Person (auto-crits on the held target, which turns your Action Surge into a guaranteed crit-fest), and Misty Step (bonus action mobility).
Channel Oath abilities:
- Vow of Enmity (level 3): the defining button. Bonus action, mark a target, gain Advantage on all attacks against it for the fight. Use it on turn one, every fight.
- Inquisitor’s Might (level 3): buff yourself or an ally with extra radiant damage and the ability to daze; a solid opener when you don’t need Vow immediately.
Multiclass Options

This build is Paladin 8 / Fighter 4, and the order matters. Here’s why this specific split is the burst-damage sweet spot:
- Paladin 8 gives you Extra Attack (level 5), Vow of Enmity and Misty Step, your second feat, and level-2 spell slots to fuel bigger Divine Smites. Aura of Protection comes online at Paladin 6.
- Fighter 4 gives you a second fighting style, Action Surge (Fighter 2; your whole burst hinges on it), the Battle Master subclass (Fighter 3) with maneuvers like Trip Attack, and a feat at Fighter 4.
Start Paladin to lock in saving-throw proficiencies, take Paladin to 5 for Extra Attack, then dip Fighter to 3 for Action Surge and Battle Master, finish Paladin to 8, then return for the last Fighter level. (Your exact interleave can vary; the key milestones are Paladin 5 for Extra Attack and Fighter 2 for Action Surge.)
Why not Paladin 9+ / Fighter 3? Dropping to Fighter 3 saves a level for Paladin 9 (level-3 spell slots), but the Fighter 4 feat is worth more to this build’s damage than a third Paladin spell tier. Stick with 8/4.
Action Economy & Buff Stacking

Before combat, cast Bless (Shadowheart Cleric), apply an oil, drink your elixir, and if you can open from stealth, lead with a Thunderous Smite attack for a surprise knockback.
The burst turn (this is the whole build):
- Bonus action → Vow of Enmity on the target for Advantage. You can save your bonus action after you get Risky Ring in Act 2 and use it for a Great Weapon Master attack. Use Vow in the early Act 1/2 gameplay.
- Attack (Battle Master) → Trip Attack to knock it prone; now every hit against it is at Advantage and crits more.
- Action → your two Extra Attack swings, each with Great Weapon Master, smiting the crits.
- Action Surge → a second full action for two more swings, more smites.
- That’s up to four greatsword hits in one turn, most at Advantage against a prone target, each able to carry a Divine Smite. Bosses rarely survive it.
Vow of Enmity persists, so keep swinging with Advantage; use Command or Hold Person with your bonus action to lock down the next threat, and Misty Step to reposition.
If you want a mega turn, have a Sorcerer or Wizard cast Haste on you (Potion of Speed). Then, you can use the Bloodlust Elixir as well, triggering another action.

Potions, Elixirs, and Consumables

Only one elixir active at a time.
- Elixir of Bloodlust: an extra action after your first kill; on a burst build that finishes targets fast, this can chain into a huge turn. The default.
- Potion of Speed: an extra action and +2 AC; stack it with Action Surge on a boss turn for five or six swings.
- Elixir of Hill / Cloud Giant Strength: sets Strength to 21 / 27 if you’d rather not spend feats on Strength.
- Always carry: Oil of Sharpness / Accuracy before a burst turn, and healing potions.
Illithid Powers and Synergies

- Luck of the Far Realms: force a crit once per long rest; drop it on an Action Surge swing with a smite queued for the biggest single hit in your run.
- Favourable Beginnings: bonus on your first hit against a target; reliable openers even without Vow up yet.
- Cull the Weak: free finishing damage that feeds the Elixir of Bloodlust kill trigger.
- Fly / Black Hole: Fly fixes mobility to reach a backline target; Black Hole clusters enemies so your prone target and its neighbors all eat your burst.
Permanent Bonus Tracker

| Item | Act | How | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auntie Ethel’s Hair | 1 | Deal with Auntie Ethel | +1 to a stat; Strength or Charisma |
| Everlasting Vigour | 2 | Araj Oblodra | +2 Strength; toward 20 without a feat |
| Mirror of Loss | 3 | House of Grief | +2 to a stat; Strength to 22 |
Party Synergies

Vengeance is a single-target assassin; it wants a party that sets up the kill and cleans up the rest.
- Support (Shadowheart): Play her as Life Cleric with Bless and Healing.
- A controller (Gale Wizard): Have him focused on Fireball and larage AOE damage spells.
- Rogue Melee (Astarion as Multiclass): Use Astarion Rogue dual-wield for utility and huge sneak attack criticals.
Honour Mode Tips
- Save Action Surge for the scariest enemy. It’s a short-rest resource; blow it on the boss, not the first trash pack.
- Open from stealth with Thunderous Smite for a surprise round, then Vow of Enmity and Trip Attack before the enemy moves.
- Set Divine Smite to “Ask” so you spend slots only on crits and kills.
- Turn Aura of Protection on manually at the start of a tough fight.
- Short rest before boss fights to guarantee Action Surge and your Superiority Dice are available.
BG3 Vengeance Paladin Build FAQ
1. Is the Oath of Vengeance Paladin good in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Yes; it has the highest single-target burst of any Paladin, especially multiclassed with Fighter for Action Surge. Vow of Enmity gives Advantage on demand and Misty Step fixes mobility. It’s a top boss-killer, though it lacks a defensive aura of its own.
2. Why multiclass Vengeance with Fighter?
Fighter 4 adds Action Surge (a second full action for double the swings), a second fighting style, the Battle Master subclass with Trip Attack to guarantee crits, and an extra feat. It roughly doubles your burst-turn damage.
3. Should a Vengeance Paladin use a greatsword or sword-and-shield?
This build uses a two-handed greatsword for maximum Great Weapon Master and smite-crit damage. If you want survivability over burst, the Oath of the Crown sword-and-board tank is the better pick.
4. Is Vengeance better than Devotion?
Vengeance has a higher damage ceiling (especially multiclassed); Devotion is more consistent and keeps all its auras as a pure class. Pick Vengeance for burst, Devotion for reliability and party support.
5. What order do I take the multiclass levels?
Start Paladin (for saving-throw proficiencies), reach Paladin 5 for Extra Attack, dip Fighter to 3 for Action Surge and Battle Master, finish Paladin 8, then take the last Fighter level. Paladin 8 / Fighter 4 total.
6. What are the best feats for a Vengeance Paladin?
Great Weapon Master first, then Ability Improvement to Strength 20, then Savage Attacker (consistency).
