Latest Update: September 5, 2026 – Categories: Baldur’s Gate 3
Turn Astarion from a boring Rogue into the Ultimate melee monster in BG3 with our multiclass build. Designed for heavy burst with melee crits, extra piercing damage, and mobility, Astarion is meant to play on the front lines, in the shadows, taking down any enemy in his path. This guide will walk you through how to set up Astarion for melee DPS, and every choice along the way.

Our build uses a multiclass setup with Rogue, Ranger, and Fighter. While Rogue is strong in early levels, beyond level 4, power drops rapidly. You’re left with a lackluster melee build that begs you to multiclass. We pick Ranger for extra attack, spellcasting, and some synergies between the two classes. Lastly, we pick Fighter for an additional action on demand and a reduction in critical.

Speaking of reduction in critical, this combination makes the Rogue deadly on turn one with gear, weapons, and subclasses all rewarding you for building into crit. By default, characters can score a critical hit by rolling a 20 on a D20. However, you can stack bonuses to get that number down to a near-automatic every turn. Paired with the right gloves, you’ll add a massive amount of damage every turn, passively, without a complex gameplay loop. Let’s move on to the build at a glance, followed by character creation choices.
This build guide is updated for Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8, Community Update #36, Version Number: 4.1.1.7209685.

Why Use the Astarion Build?

In Baldur’s Gate 3, Astarion can be recruited early after the Nautiloid crash, and with this multiclassed build, he provides a massive turn one damage spike due to the Gloomstalker, Thief, and Champion combo. You get two bonus actions per turn, extra attack, so each swing hits twice. Each attack has the chance to critical and trigger additional damage. Plus, you’re likely to go first on turn one, potentially wiping out the entire team. Here’s a quick TLDR of the build and pros and cons:
- Absurd turn-one burst. Between Dread Ambusher, Extra Attack, two off-hand strikes (thanks to Thief’s bonus action), and Action Surge, Astarion can land six-plus attacks on his first turn.
- Every hit is doubled. Bhaalist Armour makes nearby enemies Vulnerable to Piercing, so your daggers and shortswords deal double damage across the board.
- Crit fishing. With Sarevok’s Horned Helmet, Killer’s Sweetheart, and the Dead Shot bow, his crits land constantly, and a critical Sneak Attack is a screen-ending number.
- Stealth control. Gloomstalker’s Umbral Shroud lets him vanish mid-fight, break line of sight, and reset for another ambush.
- True Strike Riposte: When a creature misses you with a melee attack, you may retaliate and gain True Strike Bloodthirst
Weaknesses: the biggest weakness is understanding Advantage, so you can always trigger Sneak Attack damage. Positioning is key, so going first, using the Misty Step spell, or Longstrider for extra movement makes it more difficult than other builds to master. In Act 2, you gain the Risky Ring, which always gives you Advantage, making the mechanic much easier to manage. You are also limited to Finesse weapon attacks to make the most out of stealth checks.
How to Recruit & Respec Astarion

Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3 is an origin character you can recruit early after the Nautiloid crash by heading north along the beach path until he jumps out and surprises you. You will go through a series of dialogue options, where you can kill him if you’re not careful.
Also, be careful in Act 1 in the Sunlit Wetlands down southwest on the map. There’s a character named Gandrel hunting Astarion and if you don’t back him, he can die or leave your party.
Once you unlock Astarion, it’s advised to respec him immediately with Withers for 100 gold, or by Level 4 at the latest for optimal performance. He starts as an Arcane Trickster with a suboptimal subclass and ability score. Look below for what we recommend, because he performs much better once reclassed.
Character Creation Selections – Astarion build
| Choice | Selection |
| Character | Astarion |
| Race | High Elf (fixed) |
| Class | Rogue (Thief) |
| Subclass | Thief Gloomstalker Ranger Champion |
| Background | Charlatan (fixed – grants Deception & Sleight of Hand) |
| Ability Scores | STR 8 DEX 17 CON 16 INT 8 WIS 14 CHA 10 |
| Skill Proficiencies 4x | Acrobatics, Stealth, Insight, Athletics |
| Skill Expertise 2x | Sleight of Hand, Stealth |
Best Race for the Astarion Build
Astarion is locked to High Elf and can’t be changed. It’s a solid fit: Darkvision, Fey Ancestry (Advantage vs Charm, no magical Sleep), weapon proficiencies, and a free Wizard cantrip.
Best Ability Scores (point buy) for Astarion Build

Dexterity drives his attack rolls, damage, armour class, initiative, and Sneak Attack, and it also boosts ranged weapon damage if you swap to a bow or crossbows; the Dexterity ability modifier is what scales these combat benefits. Set your DEX to 17 if you intend to get Auntie Ethel’s Hair in Act 1 (permanent +1 bonus). However, if you don’t want to fuss with it, drop to 16 and increase intelligence to 10. Next, set Constitution at 16 for HP and concentration saving throws. Wisdom is helpful for utility skills, so set it to 14. Otherwise, dump STR and INT as they aren’t needed.
Best Background
Astarion’s background is a Charlatan, which grants Deception and Sleight of Hand skill proficiencies. This is a great background, and note that you cannot change it.
Best Skills
In character creation, you will pick four skill proficiencies (+2 bonus) and two skill expertise (+4 bonus), with Sleight of Hand improving lockpicking and pickpocketing. Below are our recommended choices:
- Skill proficiencies: Acrobatics, Stealth, Insight, Athletics
- Skill expertise: Sleight of Hand, Stealth
The most important skills to increase will be Sleight of Hand and Stealth.
Leveling Progression – Astarion build
Respec at Withers and follow this order, it keeps him powerful at every stage.
| Level | Class | Selection | Why It Matters |
| 1 | Rogue (1) | Sneak Attack; Expertise: Stealth, Sleight of Hand | Extra damage immediately with Advantage |
| 2 | Rogue (2) | Cunning Action (Dash/Disengage/Hide as bonus action) | Mobility to reach flanks and trigger Sneak Attack |
| 3 | Rogue (3) | Thief: Fast Hands + Second-Story Work | A second bonus action means an extra off-hand strike every turn |
| 4 | Rogue (4) | Feat: Ability Improvement (+2 DEX → 19) | More accuracy, damage, AC, initiative |
| 5 | Ranger (1) | Favoured Enemy Bounty Hunter, Natural Explorer Wasteland Wanderer Fire Skills: Survival | Get fire resistance |
| 6 | Ranger (2) | Fighting Style: Two-Weapon Fighting Spells: Hunter’s Mark, Longstrider | Adds your Dexterity modifier to off-hand damage |
| 7 | Ranger (3) | Gloomstalker: Dread Ambusher + Umbral Shroud Spell: Ensnaring Strike | +3 initiative, +movement, and a free extra attack on turn one |
| 8 | Ranger (4) | Feat: Savage Attacker | Best melee DPS feat |
| 9 | Ranger (5) | Extra Attack Spell: Spiked Growth | Two attacks per Action |
| 10 | Fighter (1) | Fighting Style: Defense (+1 AC); Second Wind | Survivability and a bonus-action self-heal |
| 11 | Fighter (2) | Action Surge | An entire extra Action,turn-one alpha strike |
| 12 | Fighter (3) | Champion Subclass: Improved Critical Hit | Reduction in critical hit rolls |
If you stayed in Rogue longer, you would gain access to further Sneak Attack scaling up to 6d6, or 6-36 bonus damage, by Level 11.
Here are the most critical choices for you to pick and why:
- Level 3 – Thief Fast Hands: The extra bonus action becomes an extra off-hand attack (doubled by Bhaalist) every single round.
- Level 7 – Dread Ambusher: Turn one bonus attack, extra movement, and the initiative to go first.
- Level 9 – Extra Attack: two attacks per action, each triggers an off-hand attack with bonus action.
- Level 11 – Action Surge: Trigger a second action once per combat.
Uncanny dodge is a strong Rogue Level 5 defensive feature that halves incoming attack damage, but this multiclass path stops Rogue at 4 and does not get it.
Best Skills, Maneuvers & Class Features

Sneak Attack is your biggest source of free damage. It applies on normal attacks once per turn when you have Advantage or an ally is adjacent to the target. Everything in the build exists to make that hit (and your others) land doubled and crit.
Dread Ambusher (Gloom Stalker): on turn one, you gain increased movement, damage, initiative, and an extra attack (that doesn’t cost an action or a bonus action).
Hunter’s Mark (Ranger): concentration bonus damage on a target; cast it, then because you’re a Thief you can still Hide and attack in the same turn, though concentration can break on a failed constitution saving throw.
Umbral Shroud (Gloomstalker): become invisible to drop out of a bad spot, reposition, and re-open with a Sneak Attack. Just realize you need to be lightly obscured, which is shown on your mouse when you are in a dimly lit area.
Multiclass Options

This Thief 4 / Gloomstalker 5 / Champion Fighter 3 split is the build. If you prefer to keep it to two classes, Thief 4 / Gloomstalker 8 drops Action Surge for an extra Ranger feat and more spells, simpler, less burst.
The ranged variant (same classes, dual hand crossbows + Sharpshooter) is more forgiving and consistent if you ever want to swap; it leans on ranged attacks instead of melee burst, and you can respec at Withers for 100 gold to test it.
Action Economy & Buff Stacking

The whole point is to overwhelm the first round. A fully online turn one looks like:
- Pre-Buff: Elixir, Oil weapon, sneak, or Invisibility scroll/spell; some buffs and oils last only a few turns, so use them right before combat
- Attack while stealth for Surprise, triggers Gloomstalker bonuses
- Dread Ambusher bonus attack (Gloomstalker, first turn only)
- → two main-hand attacks (Extra Attack), Sneak Attack on the first qualifying hit
- Action Surge → two more attacks
- → off-hand attack
Save your bonus actions for Misty Step mobility or Cunning Actions. You’ll also want them for off-hand attacks which are done automatically. Use main hand attacks for melee burst on weapon attacks.
Key Decision: Ascend or Stay a Spawn
This is Astarion’s defining companion choice in Act 3’s resolution of his Cazador questline. Ascended Astarion gains combat perks (a powerful bonus-action bite that heals and buffs him, and minor stat bumps), but it’s the darker narrative path and changes his character. Staying a Spawn keeps the redemptive arc with no real combat penalty. Mechanically, the build works either way. Ascension is a small power bump, not a requirement, so make the call you want for the story.
Gear Progression Path – Astarion build

Use light, finesse, and piercing weapons throughout. The build explodes in Act 3 when the Murder Tribunal (Temple of Bhaal) hands you Bhaalist Armour and the crit gear.

Combat and Gameplay Strategy (Act 1-3)
Early Game Strategy (Act 1)
Lead every fight from stealth. Use either crouching or an invisibility potion or spell. Position Astarion to flank or attack with Advantage so Sneak Attack lands, and use Cunning Action (bonus-action Hide/Dash) to reach the enemy backline. Pick off mages and archers first. Make sure to use Misty Step for mobility when you need to get in or out of a position.
Mid-Game Strategy (Act 2)
You should now have Extra Attack and Dread Ambusher. Your goal is to make turn one as deadly as possible by starting stealth, and unloading on the most threatening target. Use Risky Ring so you always have Advantage, and if you need to retreat, use Cunning Actions for huge mobility.
Late Game Strategy (Act 3)
Bhaalist Armour, Crimson Mischief, Bloodthirst, Sarevok’s Horned Helmet, and the crit ring. Open by spending Luck of the Far Realms for a guaranteed critical Sneak Attack, Action Surge for a second attack, and watch priority targets evaporate. Killer’s Sweetheart turns every kill into the next guaranteed crit, chaining through packs.
Potions, Elixirs, and Consumables

- Elixir of Bloodlust – after a kill, you gain an extra action; on a build that kills something every turn, this snowballs out of control. Your default daily elixir.
- Elixir of Viciousness – lowers the critical number by one and stacks with other bonuses. Use this if you don’t have Bloodlust.
- Greater Invisibility – Use this or potions before combat to ensure you start from stealth.
- Potion of Speed – extra action and movement for an even bigger alpha strike.
- Coatings: Drow Poison (knocks targets unconscious), or basilisk/crit-boosting oils on the main hand before a big turn.
- Invisibility potions – for repositioning when Umbral Shroud is on cooldown.
Illithid Powers and Synergies
Tadpole (Illithid) powers are optional. They won’t change your companion’s story, but will change their appearance. If combat power is your priority, you should consume them or have your main character take them and use left overs for Astraion’s build.
- Luck of the Far Realms – turn a hit into a guaranteed critical; a crit Sneak Attack inside the Bhaalist aura is the single biggest hit in your toolkit.
- Favourable Beginnings – Advantage and a bonus on your opening attack each fight.
- Cull the Weak – free finishing damage that helps trigger Killer’s Sweetheart’s kill-to-crit loop.
- Fly / Shadow Step – reach the backline and flank instantly.
Permanent Bonus Tracker
These bonuses are unlocked in various Acts and always stay with your character. They make the Gale Evocation build much more powerful and should be prioritized in each Act. Below, we have this broken down by each Act and what to prioritize. None of these are required for the build, however.

Party Synergies
Astarion is your DPS burst character with lower survivability. Pair him with a support character, AOE damage, and melee attention grabber for the best party.
- Shadowheart (Light Cleric): fulfills role as both tank and healer, soaking up damage and debuff enemies in melee range.
- Gale (Evocation Wizard): huge AOE damage that’s safe to party members, burst down large groups.
- Lae’zel (Battlemaster Fighter): simple and effective melee build that grabs enemies’ attention.
The core synergy: any ally who grants Advantage or guarantees a crit multiplies his already-doubled piercing damage.
FAQs about the Astarion Build
1. What’s the best build for Astarion?
A Thief Rogue multiclass – Thief 4 / Gloomstalker 5 / Fighter 3. Thief’s extra bonus action plus Gloomstalker’s ambush and Fighter’s Action Surge give him the best turn-one burst in the game.
2. Thief or Assassin for Astarion?
Thief. The extra bonus action delivers more attacks every round, which the dual-wield melee build wants more than the Assassin’s surprise-round burst.
3. Should I respec Astarion?
Yes, his default Arcane Trickster underuses his Dexterity. Respec to the Thief multiclass at Withers.
4. Should I Ascend Astarion?
It’s a small combat bonus and a major story choice. The build is excellent either way, so decide based on the narrative you want.
5. What are the best feats for Astarion?
Ability Improvement to max Dexterity, and Savage Attacker for max melee damage.
6. Melee or ranged?
Ranged is a safe option with less burst, while melee builds shine in Act 3 with the correct gear. If you want less gear dependence, play range. If you want max burst and huge criticals, play melee.
