Latest Update: August 10, 2026 – Categories: Baldur’s Gate 3, BG3 Ranger Builds
Learn how to dominate the battlefield with a legendary animal companion using our updated Beast Master Ranger build for Baldur’s Gate 3! This is the perfect guide for players who want extra bodies on the field to tank, distract, and shred enemies in Honour Mode.

The Beast Master Ranger is one of the few subclass builds in Baldur’s Gate 3 where multiclassing can make you weaker. Because your animal companion scales directly with your Ranger level, this build focuses on a pure (or nearly pure) Ranger progression. By level 11, your pets gain “Bestial Fury,” allowing them to attack twice, making your team’s action economy nearly impossible for the enemy to beat.
This build guide is updated for Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8, Community Update #36.

Introduction to the BG3 Beast Master Build
The Beast Master Ranger is a standout choice in Baldur’s Gate 3 for players who want to blend precise ranged attacks with the tactical support of a loyal animal companion. As a master ranger, you’ll command the battlefield from a distance, using your bow to deal consistent damage while your companion distracts, controls, and even finishes off enemies. This build thrives on versatility, whether you’re picking off foes from afar or using your companion to create openings for your party, the Beast Master Ranger adapts to any combat scenario.
Key to this build’s success are your ability scores. Prioritizing Dexterity boosts your ranged weapon attack rolls, damage output, and Armor Class, while a solid investment in Wisdom enhances your spellcasting and animal handling. With the right balance of stats, skills, and gear, the Beast Master Ranger becomes a formidable force, capable of turning the tide of any encounter with a well-timed arrow or a perfectly positioned beast.
Why Use the Beast Master Ranger Build?

The main reason to use the Beast Master Ranger build is the ability to summon animal companions, which provide battle control and utility. These summoned animal companions, such as the Dire Raven blinding entire groups with darkness or the Wolf Spider webbing targets to grant you Advantage, offer a massive boost to your combat effectiveness.
Unlike the Gloom Stalker Ranger‘s “one-and-done” turn one, the Beast Master excels in sustained combat. You have more health across your party, more targets for the enemy to miss, and incredible utility. Plus, you still get all the heavy-hitting Ranger perks like Sharpshooter and Extra Attack.
BG3 Beast Master Build Character Creation

| Choice | Selection |
|---|---|
| Character | Tav |
| Race | Wood Elf (Best) |
| Class | 11 Ranger 1 Cleric |
| Subclass | Beast Master War Priest |
| Background | Folk Hero |
| Ability Score | STR: 8 DEX: 17 CON: 16 INT: 8 WIS: 14 CHA: 10 |
| Skill | Athletics, Nature, Insight |
The first important decision you make for this Beast Master Ranger build is your Origin character. Unlike stealth-focused Ranger builds, this setup does not rely on Dark Urge or early invisibility to function. We recommend playing Tav (custom character), as the build’s power comes from companion pressure, ranged damage, not surprise mechanics. This also allows you to experience the story without being locked into an evil narrative path, making it a more flexible and accessible option for both first-time and Honour Mode players.

When it comes to race selection, Wood Elf is the best overall choice. The bonus 1.5 meters of movement per turn, when combined with Longstrider, gives you excellent positioning every round. This extra movement allows you to kite enemies, reposition to high ground, and maintain distance while your animal companion controls the frontline. While races like Githyanki or High Elf offer useful utility, Wood Elf’s passive mobility consistently provides value in every combat encounter.

For ability scores, Dexterity is your most important stat and should be set to an odd number at character creation if you plan to obtain the +1 permanent bonus from Auntie Ethel in Act 1. When allocating ability points, prioritize Dexterity first, then invest in Constitution and Wisdom to optimize your overall performance. This allows you to reach an even Dexterity score early without spending a feat, improving your accuracy, damage, Armor Class, and initiative. With this setup, you can reach 20 Dexterity in Act 1 using The Graceful Cloth, while still leaving room to invest in Constitution and Wisdom to support survivability, spellcasting, and your Beast Master companion.
Choosing the Best Race and Background
Selecting the right race and background is crucial for maximizing your Beast Master Ranger’s potential. The Wood Elf is widely regarded as the top pick for this build, thanks to its increased movement speed and proficiency in Perception and Stealth. That extra mobility allows you to reposition easily, kite enemies, and keep your distance while your animal companion holds the line. The Wood Elf’s natural affinity for the wild also fits perfectly with the master ranger’s theme and playstyle.
For backgrounds, Outlander and Folk Hero are both excellent choices. Outlander grants proficiency in Survival and Athletics, helping you navigate difficult terrain and escape grapples, while Folk Hero provides Animal Handling and Survival – both highly thematic and practical for a beast master. These backgrounds not only reinforce your role as a wilderness expert but also provide useful skill proficiencies that complement your combat and exploration abilities. Ultimately, your choice should reflect your preferred playstyle and the needs of your party, but Wood Elf with either Outlander or Folk Hero is a tried-and-true combination for any aspiring beast master ranger.
Beast Master Subclass Features
The Beast Master subclass is all about forging a powerful bond with your animal companion and leveraging that partnership for maximum battlefield impact. At level 3, you gain the ability to summon a beast companion – your choice of creatures like the Wolf, Bear, or Dire Raven – each offering unique abilities to control, damage, or distract enemies. As you progress, your companion scales with your ranger level, gaining more hit points, improved attacks, and special features like Bestial Fury, which grants them an extra attack per turn at higher levels.
Beyond just summoning a beast, the Beast Master subclass provides spells and abilities that enhance your companion’s effectiveness. Features like Exceptional Training allow your animal to use bonus actions for special maneuvers, while spells such as Spike Growth and Ensnaring Strike can be used to shape the battlefield and protect your team. The synergy between the beast master and their animal companion is the heart of this subclass, making it a top pick for players who enjoy tactical support, battlefield control, and a dynamic, ever-present ally in every combat encounter.
Leveling Progression – Beast Master Ranger build
| Level | Class | Selection |
| 1 | Ranger | Bounty Hunter, Beast Tamer |
| 2 | Ranger | Archery Fighting Style, Hunter’s Mark, Ensnaring Strike |
| 3 | Ranger | Subclass: Beast Master, Longstrider |
| 4 | Ranger | Feat: Sharpshooter |
| 5 | Ranger | Extra Attack (Player), Companion Bond, Spike Growth |
| 6 | Ranger | Ranger Knight (Heavy Armor), Wasteland Wanderer Fire |
| 7 | Ranger | Exceptional Training, Hail of Thorns |
| 8 | Ranger | Feat: Ability Score Improvement (+2 DEX) |
| 9 | Ranger | Level 3 Spells (Conjure Barrage) |
| 10 | Ranger | Sanctified Stalker, Wasteland Wanderer Cold |
| 11 | Ranger | Bestial Fury (Companion gets Extra Attack), Lightning Arrow |
| 12 | Cleric | Multiclass Cleric, War Priest Cantrips: Thaumaturgy, Guidance, Bursting Sinew Spells: Guiding Bolt, Command, Sanctuary |
When leveling your bg3 beast master ranger build, make sure to carefully select your favored enemy options. Choosing favored enemies that match the types of foes you expect to face can provide significant tactical advantages, such as imposing disadvantages on certain opponents and improving your combat effectiveness.
Action Economy & Buff Stacking

The best way to increase your action economy (more useful action/bonus action per turn) is to take one level of Cleric for War Priest passive. You want to reach level 11 with the Beast Master for the most effective companion animals, but one level grants you an extra attack with a bonus action. Since the Ranger has Extra Attack at level 5, you can now attack two times with your action, and once with your bonus action.
To further maximize your effectiveness, consider using items or abilities that enhance your next attack roll, such as those that grant advantage or increase the chance of a critical hit. These can be stacked with your attacks to make each turn more impactful.
Moreover, your companion animals get “extra attack” at level 11 via the Bestial Fury passive. Another reason to stick with the Ranger class almost until max level. Now, your companion animals will get two attacks per action, plus extra utility with a bonus action thanks to exceptional training. Combine your turn and your companions, you will attack four times with two actions, and twice potentially with two bonus actions. Plus, these animal companions stick with others like Scratch, Shovel, or even level 5 summoning spells. Potentially creating an entire “zoo” full of summoning creatures.

Potions, Elixirs, and Consumables
Elixirs

Elixir of Hill Giant / Cloud Giant Strength: What it does: Sets Strength to 21 (Act 1) or 27 (Act 3) until a Long Rest. If you are using the Titanstring Bow, this is your most important damage buff. This bow adds your Strength modifier to every shot. With a Cloud Giant Elixir, you add a flat +8 damage to every arrow, which is then doubled if the enemy is surprised or vulnerable. Drink immediately after every Long Rest. This allows you to keep your natural Strength at 8 and put all your points into Dexterity and Constitution.
Elixir of Bloodlust: Once per turn after a kill, you gain 5 Temporary HP and an additional Action. On Turn 1, a Beast Master can kill a weak enemy to gain an extra action, allowing for 2-3 more shots. Use this if you are using a different bow (like Gontr Mael) or if you have reached high Strength through permanent bonuses like the Mirror of Loss.
Potions & Coatings

Potion of Speed: Grants an extra Action, +2 AC, Advantage on DEX Saves, and double movement speed. This is essential for solo runs. It allows you to reposition and fire twice as many arrows. Drink this just before initiating combat from stealth to maximize your “Surprise” round efficiency.
Drow Poison / Oil of Accuracy: Drow Poison can put enemies into magical sleep, providing a tactical advantage; Oil of Accuracy grants +2 to Attack Rolls. Use Oil of Accuracy to negate the -5 penalty from the Sharpshooter feat. Use Drow Poison against high-threat targets; if they fall asleep, your next hit is a guaranteed Critical. Apply to your bow before combat starts. Unlike throwing builds, coatings work perfectly on the Ranger’s bows.
Special Arrows

Arrow of Many Targets: Hits a primary target and then ricochets to hit up to three additional nearby enemies. This is the best arrow for clearing rooms. Each ricochet applies your “Damage Riders” (like the Titanstring bonus, Hunter’s Mark, and Poison). One arrow can effectively kill four enemies at once.
Smokepowder Arrow: What it does: Deals weapon damage and explodes in a massive 4m radius, dealing Force and Fire damage. This is your “Panic Button.” It deals massive AOE damage and can knock enemies off ledges or away from you if you get cornered.
Arrow of Slaying (Dragon/Aberration/Humanoid): Deals weapon damage, and then doubles all damage against that specific creature type. These are the “Boss Killers.” Use a Humanoid Slaying arrow against Orin or Gortash to deal hundreds of damage in a single turn.
Arrow of Roaring Thunder: Deals weapon damage and knocks the target back 5 meters. Use this for environmental kills. In many BG3 arenas, knocking a boss into a chasm is the fastest way to win.
Note: To maximize the effectiveness of these special arrows, always use the right ranged weapons, such as a Longbow or Joltshooter, to boost your damage and tactical options.
Illithid Powers and Synergies

Illithid Powers are granted by consuming Tadpoles and the effect is introduced early in Act 1. There aren’’t any major negative impacts to your character, including your story ending. However, consuming the Astral-Touched Tadpole will change your appearance and affect your character’s epilogue and relationships. If you’re interested in the most powerful character, it’s near mandatory to consume and seek out these tadpoles for incredible passive and active bonuses. Some Illithid powers or specific gear can also grant movement speed increases, allowing for better positioning in combat.
Tier 1: The Essentials (Prioritize First)
Luck of the Far Realms: Once per Long Rest, when you make a successful Attack Roll, you can change it into a Critical Hit. This is your “Boss Killer” button. While the Assassin subclass grants automatic crits against surprised enemies, this power allows you to force a Critical Hit even if you lose the element of surprise or if the fight lasts until Turn 2. Use it with an Arrow of Slaying for triple-digit damage.
Favourable Beginnings: The first Attack Roll or Ability Check you make against a target gains a bonus equal to your Proficiency Bonus. Accuracy is everything when using the Sharpshooter feat (-5 to hit). This power ensures your very first shot from stealth almost never misses.
Cull of the Weak: When you bring a creature’s HP lower than your number of evolved Illithid powers, they die instantly. As a Ranger, you will often fire 6–8 arrows on Turn 1. Cull of the Weak ensures that if an arrow leaves an enemy with 15-20 HP, they explode anyway, allowing you to move your next shot to a new target immediately.
Tier 2: Precision & Utility
Ability Drain: Once per turn, when you make an Attack Roll, the target’s corresponding Ability Score is reduced by 1. Since you are a ranged attacker, you will be draining the enemy’s Dexterity. This lowers their Armor Class (AC) and their Initiative, making them easier for the rest of your party to hit if they survive your initial volley.
Tier 3: High-Tier (Astral Tadpole Required)
Fly: Grants the ability to Fly as part of your movement. Position is everything for a sniper. Fly allows you to reach high-ground rafters and rooftops without wasting your Bonus Action on Cunning Action: Dash or Jump. High ground provides a +2 bonus to hit, which helps negate the Sharpshooter penalty.
Black Hole: Use an Action (or Bonus Action if Awakened) to pull all nearby enemies into a single point and Slow them. Then use a Smokepowder Arrow to nuke a massive group with AOE.
Mind Blast: Deal 4d8+Int Psychic damage in a massive cone and potentially Stun targets for 1 turn. This provides the Barbarian with a reliable “panic button” AOE stun. If you find yourself surrounded by high-threat enemies, a Mind Blast can take them out of the fight, allowing you to reposition for better throw angles.

Combat Strategy
Your main combat priority with the Beast Master build is to use your companion animal to cause a disruption in the team while consistently dealing damage with both your ranger and your companion. Use the Bear’s taunt Goading Roar to force attacks or impose disadvantage. Use the Raven to blind attackers, and the Spider to slow movement. Also, position your companions near the target so you gain advantage and impose disadvantage on the target you intend to attack.
Once your party is in position, target the highest threat enemy and focus on disabling them. This can be done with Ice Arrows to knock them prone, Roaring Thunder arrows to knock enemies off ledges or back, or even Ensnaring Strike to keep melee aggressors at a distance. Control the battlefield, while your companions also disrupt targets and stay at max range.
For survivability, always keep a potion of invisibility on you in case you need to flee. At level 10, you get hide in plain sight and this can be helpful to go invisible. Also use potions and elixirs prior to battles and try to get the surprise status effect by sneaking and shooting a target with an arrow before they see you. This gives you one round of damage for free and is helpful for setting up your companions in position.
Party Synergies
Your party composition priority is to have a Life or Light Cleric healer, Fighter Battle Master front-line DPS, and a Sorcerer Draconic Bloodline spellcasters. The Fighter moves into position near your highest threat target, while the Sorcerer provides AOE damage like Fireball. The Cleric is buffing your team with Bless, healing, and crowd controlling. Summoned companions can provide additional frontline support and tactical advantages, helping to control the battlefield and absorb damage. This gives you a well rounded team composition.
Tips and Tricks for the Beast Master Build
To truly excel as a beast master, focus on optimizing your ability scores—Dexterity should be your highest stat for improved ranged attacks, Armor Class, and initiative, while Wisdom supports your spellcasting and animal handling. Don’t overlook Constitution, as it helps you maintain concentration on key spells like Hunter’s Mark and Spike Growth. When you reach ability improvement milestones, consider boosting Dexterity first, then Wisdom or Constitution as needed for survivability and spell effectiveness.
In combat, always position your animal companion to disrupt enemy lines—use them to flank, impose conditions like Prone or Blind, or soak up attacks that would otherwise target your ranger. Meanwhile, stay at range and use your bow to pick off high-priority targets, leveraging feats like Sharpshooter for massive damage. Equip gear that boosts your attack rolls, damage, and movement speed to stay mobile and deadly. Remember to use your bonus actions wisely, whether it’s commanding your beast, applying Hunter’s Mark, or activating special abilities. With the right strategy and equipment, the Beast Master build becomes a relentless force, combining the best of ranged attacks and animal companion synergy to dominate every combat encounter.
FAQs about the Beast Master Ranger Build
1. Why play Beast Master instead of Gloom Stalker or Hunter?
Beast Master is the most consistent Ranger subclass in Baldur’s Gate 3. While Gloom Stalker excels at turn-one burst and Hunter specializes in AoE damage, Beast Master provides reliable pressure every round through its animal companion. This makes it far more forgiving in Honour Mode and solo play, where fights don’t always end on the first turn.
2. Why use 11 Ranger instead of multiclassing earlier?
Beast Master gains its largest power spike at Level 11 with Bestial Fury, more HP for companions and Extra Attack. Multiclassing forgos the entire premise of the build, which is your companions. However, at level 12, you don’t need another feat, but one level in War Cleric can give you bonus action attack and makes it a better choice.
3. Why take 1 level of War Cleric instead of Fighter or Rogue?
The War Cleric dip provides excellent value with minimal investment. You gain War Priest charges, allowing you to make additional weapon attacks using your Bonus Action, which pairs perfectly with Sharpshooter and Extra Attack. You also gain access to Cleric utility spells and heavy armor proficiency if needed. Unlike Rogue or Fighter, War Cleric enhances your sustained damage without shifting the build toward burst or stealth playstyles that Beast Master doesn’t rely on.
4. Does the animal companion scale into Act 3?
Yes. The animal companion scales with your Ranger level, gains additional abilities, higher survivability, and benefits from your buffs and battlefield positioning. At Level 11, your companion becomes durable enough to survive late-game encounters and powerful enough to meaningfully contribute damage and control every turn.
5. What is the best animal companion to use?
The Wolf is generally the strongest all-around option due to its ability to apply Prone, which grants Advantage on attacks against affected enemies. The Bear is excellent for tanking in Honour Mode, while the Raven provides scouting, Blind, and mobility. You can swap companions depending on the encounter, which gives Beast Master unmatched flexibility compared to other Ranger subclasses.
6. Do I need to rely on stealth or Surprise mechanics?
No. This build does not depend on stealth, surprise rounds, or invisibility to function. While opening from stealth is still beneficial when possible, the Beast Master Ranger is designed to win fights through ranged damage, and companion pressure.
7. Is Sharpshooter still worth taking without Assassin synergy?
Yes. Sharpshooter remains the single strongest damage feat for ranged builds in BG3. The accuracy penalty can be mitigated through high Dexterity, Archery Fighting Style, Oil of Accuracy, high ground bonuses, and Advantage from party support or prone enemies created by your companion.
8. Is the Beast Master good for Honour Mode?
Yes. Beast Master is one of the best Honour Mode Ranger builds due to its survivability, consistency, and reduced reliance on perfect execution. The companion absorbs damage, disrupts enemies, and gives you room to reposition, making the build far more forgiving than burst-dependent alternatives.
9. Does this build work well in a party?
Beast Master works exceptionally well in both solo and party play. In a party, your companion acts as an extra frontline unit while you provide reliable ranged damage. The build pairs especially well with spellcasters who benefit from enemies being grouped, prone, or distracted.
10. What are the biggest weaknesses of the Beast Master Ranger?
The main downside is lower peak burst damage compared to Gloom Stalker. Fights may take slightly longer, especially against bosses with high HP. However, this is offset by superior consistency, survivability, and control, making it one of the safest Ranger builds in the game.
