With the introduction of new subclasses in BG3 Patch 8, the meta shifted a lot in 2025. Specifically the addition of the Hexblade Warlock. This is one of the strongest multiclass and level 1 dips in all of BG3. Therefore, we are going to use the strength of the Bard combined with the Warlock to form the ultimate charisma based build. One that can spellcast, melee strike, and help in dialogue. If that sounds like something you want, then keep reading!
This build guide is updated for Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8, Community Update #36.
Why Use the BG3 College of Glamour Build?
The main strength of the Bard is group utility. The subclass College of Glamour specializes in granting temporary hit points to allies and crowd control. Moreover, you can use these subclass bonuses with a bonus action, giving you good action economy. However, the best reason to use the College of Glamour Bard is it’s synergy with the Warlock and Charisma Ability Score. Essentially, you can make use one ability score and become effective at both spellcasting, and melee damage.

The Hexblade Warlock unlocks the Bind Hexed Weapon at level 1. This allows you to use your Charisma modifier for damage, rather than Dexterity or Strength. Since the Bard and the Warlock both use Charisma for spellcasting, you can stack one ability score and become effective at both. Giving you short, long range DPS, plus you are great in conversations if this is your main character.

Charisma is unique in BG3 because you can reach 24 with only one ability score and here’s how:
- Character Creation: set your Charisma to 17 which is an odd number. If you follow the next step, you will be at 20 Charisma before finishing Act 1.
- Auntie Ethel: deal with her in the swamp and get the +1 bonus permanently. Take the ability score improvement at level 4, and boom, 20 Charisma in Act 1 as early as level 4.
- Birthright: Act 3 you can buy a hat that gives you +2 Charisma, taking you to 22.
- Mirror of the Loss: With Shadowheart companion, you can complete a complex dialogue chain and get another +2 permanently!
With 24 Charisma, you are freed up to use Elixir of Bloodlust or Elixir of Battlemage’s Power, further increasing your damage potential.

Lastly, the crowd control ability built into the Glamour Bard is great. You can use Mantle of Inspiration on three allies for temporary HP, but also to charm the attacker. The buff doesn’t have a time limit, therefore you can pre-apply before combat like Longstrider with zero downsides. Combine this CC with Fear, Hold Person, and others and you have massive crowd control.

Character Creation Selections – College of Glamour build
| Choice | Selection |
|---|---|
| Character | Tav |
| Race | Asmodeus Tiefling |
| Classes | 6x Bard 6x Warlock |
| Subclass | College of Glamour Hexblade |
| Background | Entertainer |
| Ability Score | STR: 8 DEX: 16 CON: 14 INT: 8 WIS: 10 CHA: 17 |
| Skill | Intimidation, Investigation |
This build we suggest starting at level 1 as a Warlock, not a Bard. That’s because the Hexblade Warlock gains martial weapon proficiency, shields, and Hex + Eldritch Blast combo. No other level 1 dip gives you this much firepower at the start, and helps to counter the Bard’s dreadfully slow start.
Next most important choice is your race. The Asmodeus Tiefling is nice because it gets the Darkness spell for free. You can place that on top of you with Devil’s Eye later in the game, giving you a strong defensive combo. Plus, Tieflings are resistant to fire. Other choices are High Half-Elf, Wood Elf, or Drow.
Lastly, make sure to set your Charisma at 17 if you plan on getting +1 Auntie Ethel’s Hair. If not, set to an even number and increase intelligence. You can reach 24 Charisma if you follow the gear and permanent buff recommendations.

Action Economy & Buff Stacking
his Bard/Warlock thrives on efficient turn usage and stacking value in a single round.
Battlemage Elixir

Make sure to take the Elixir of Battlemage’s Power to get Arcane Acuity. This grant Arcane Acuity on weapon hits (boosts attacks). You can use prior to combat as well and it last until a long rest.
Bonus Action Usage

Your goal is to always spend a bonus action every turn. Most players focus on just actions, but the Bard has tons of utility with bonus action. Here are primary options:
- Hex (extra damage per hit)
- Mantle of Inspiration (temp HP + free ally movement)
- Bardic Inspiration
- Healing Word
- Illithid Powers (if Awakened)
Extra Attack – Hexblade Level 5

Thanks to Deepend Pact, the Hexblade Warlock and thus the Bard, gains Extra Attack. You gain two attacks with one action. Plus, you retain all the benefits of your bonus action. However, you must have Pact of the Blade as a choice, even though it seems redundant as a hexblade.
Bardic Inspiration + Mantle of Inspiration

As a Bard, you gain Bardic Inspiration which is a resource you can use for Inspire or Mantle of Inspiration. Inspiration itself is a super powerful boost to an ally and it stacks with Bless and other bonuses. While Mantle of Inspiration helps allies if they are hit with melee attacks. Essentially, you want to use this prior to combat because it doesn’t require concentration and it last until a long rest (whichever version).
Pre-Combat Setup
If you can prepare before initiative:
- Apply Longstrider (if available)
- Drink Battlemage Elixir
- Summon familiars or minions
- Position high ground
- Stealth open when possible

Potions, Elixirs, and Consumables
Elixir of Battlemage’s Power: Grants 3 stacks of Arcane Acuity until a Long Rest. Each stack provides a +1 bonus to Spell Attack Rolls and Spell Save DC. This is best for major boss fights where you need your Hold Person or Fear spells to have a near 100% success rate. Use when you are going to cast more spells due to range or enemy types.
Elixir of Bloodlust: Provides 5 Temporary HP and an additional Action once per turn after killing an enemy. This is the best “Action Economy” elixir if you do not need another bonus.
Potions & Tactical Consumables

Potion of Speed: Grants an extra Action, +2 AC, Advantage on DEX Saves, and double movement speed for 3 turns. This is your primary way to boost actions for a few turns. Just realize, after three turns, you will lose the effect and skip a turn.
Elixir of Vigilance: Grants a +5 bonus to Initiative and immunity to being Surprised. In 2026 meta-play, the most dangerous threat is being stunned or killed before you take a turn. If you do not have the Alert feat, this ensures you go first to drop a Darkness cloud for protection. Use specifically for high-initiative boss fights.
Oils & Weapon Coatings

Oil of Accuracy: Grants a +2 bonus to Attack Rolls for 10 turns. Use this when facing high-AC bosses to ensure your Shadow Blade smites land reliably. Apply to your weapon just before initiating combat from stealth.
Drow Poison: Chance to inflict Sleep on the target. Attacks against sleeping targets are guaranteed Critical Hits. Best used with the Arrow of Many Targets (if you have ranged proficiency) to put multiple enemies to sleep, setting them up for massive Shadow Blade Smites on your next turn. Have a Ranger or Rogue in your team use this so you can blast the enemy afterwards.
Illithid Powers and Synergies

Illithid Powers are gained by consuming Tadpoles starting in Act 1. There are no major story-lock penalties, but the Astral-Touched Tadpole changes your appearance and epilogue.
For a Bard/Warlock, these powers boost control, burst damage, and action economy.
- Luck of the Far Realms: Force a Critical Hit (1/Long Rest). Unlock via Tadpoles. Best burst tool for Eldritch Blast or boss damage.
- Favourable Beginnings: First attack/check gains Proficiency Bonus. Early Illithid unlock. Helps land opening control or damage.
- Cull of the Weak: Instantly kills low-HP enemies and deals AoE psychic damage. Requires evolved powers. Great for cleaning up grouped enemies.
- Ability Drain: Reduce enemy ability score on hit (1/turn). Tier 2 unlock. Weakens saves vs your Bard spells.
- Psionic Backlash: Reaction damage vs enemy spellcasters. Tier 2 unlock. Breaks concentration and punishes casters.
- Black Hole: Pull enemies together and Slow them. Astral Tadpole required. Sets up AoE control.
- Mind Blast: Cone psychic damage + chance to Stun. Tier 3 unlock. Strong emergency crowd control.
- Concentrated Blast: Psychic damage that heals you while concentrating. Tier 3 unlock. Sustain while running Hex or control spells.
Permanent Bonus Tracker
- Auntie Ethel’s Hair: +1 to any stat. Act 1 quest reward. Boost Charisma early.
- Awakened: Illithid powers use Bonus Action. Githyanki Creche. Massive action economy boost.
- Volo’s Ersatz Eye: Permanent See Invisibility. Let Volo operate. Stops stealth ambushes.
- Scratch: Permanent familiar summon. Recruit in Act 1. Free scouting and Help action.
- Necromancy of Thay: Unlock late-game spells. Blighted Village cellar. Extra caster utility.
- Potion of Everlasting Vigour: +2 Strength. Buy in Act 2. Mostly carry weight value.
- Summon Us: Permanent summon. Save Us in prologue. Extra battlefield utility.
- Mirror of Loss: +2 to a stat. Act 3 House of Grief. Push Charisma to cap.
- Partial Ceremorphosis: Unlock Tier 3 Illithid powers. Main story progression. Best power spike.
- Anointed in Splendour: +2 to all saving throws. Stormshore Tabernacle donation. Helps maintain concentration.
Combat Strategy

The best combat strategy for the College of Glamour Bard using a Hexblade Multiclass is the Darkness and Shadowblade Combo. Devil’s Sight passive feature allows you to see in darkness. Plus, your Shadowblade spell gains advantage when you are obscured.

Therefore, you place a Darkness cloud on top of yourself or the target you intend to move into melee range and attack. Essentially they cannot cast a spell in the cloud, or do they have a high chance (almost zero) of hitting you with melee attacks. Naturally, the enemies flee the cloud only to have you rip off an opportunity attack. You can then stay in the cloud and fire off a ranged damage spell or close the distance.

Your primary melee damage combination is first, make sure you have your weapon Hex bound. This will give you extra attack at end-game with 6 levels in Warlock. Next, use the Darkness trick about. Attack with Booming Blade, specifically with the Ring of Arcane Synergy which grants increased attack power. Remember to hold concentration so other spells that take concreation away will remove your cloud (Smites or Hex).

In the early game, rely heavily on Hex (bonus action) Eldritch Blast Warlock combo. This is one reason to take Warlock at level 1, because the one-two punch of this last for many early levels. So if you ever run out of spell slots, just rip off your Eldritch Blast cantrip which will hit hard based on your level.
If you want the ultimate defensive capabilities, replace one spell and pick up Blur. Blur and Mirror Image stack together, making it nearly impossible for the enemies to hit you. Plus, unlike Darkness, the combination is mobile. This is one of the best ways to survive solo gameplay. Buy scrolls if you cannot get the spells, it still works.
Party Synergies
For your party composition, you want a front-line Fighter, Cleric Healer/Support, and a Ranger/Rogue combo. The Fighter or Paladin tank jumps into combat and forces enemies attention. The Cleric (Life or Light subclass) help buff, heal, and debuff with radiant orb luminous combo. Meanwhile, your Ranger and Rogue hybrid is used for ranged Longbow attacks, picking locks, detecting traps, and firing off elemental arrows.
