The College of Lore is the Bard you build when you want to do everything. It is the ultimate skill build and utility spellcaster. It is a character who can pass every dialogue check, disarm every trap, unlock chests, and then walk into combat with the widest spell list in the game. Its signature, Magical Secrets, lets you learn spells from any class, so your Bard can wield the best Wizard, Cleric, and Sorcerer spells alongside its own, and Cutting Words lets you shut down enemy attacks and saves as a reaction.
This build opens with a light Hexblade Warlock dip before diving into Bard. The reasoning is simple: the Bard’s own level-6 spells are weak compared to what other casters get, and you still reach Magical Secrets at Bard 10, so trading the top two Bard levels for two Warlock levels front-loads real early power.
Those two Warlock levels give you Eldritch Blast and Hex for slot-free damage, medium armor, and shield proficiency, all on the same Charisma stat the Bard already uses. This guide covers The Master of Secrets; a Warlock 2 (Hexblade) / Bard 10 (College of Lore) skill-maxing control caster that is tougher and hits harder early, then blossoms into a full control-and-utility spellcaster with Confusion, Hold Monster, and stolen Magical Secrets. If you want the party’s face, utility hub, and control caster in one durable character, this is the build.
This build guide is updated for Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8, Community Update #36, Version Number: 4.1.1.7209685.

Why Use the College of Lore Bard Build?
The College of Lore Bard is perfect for players who want skill and combat variety. You won’t be forced to have mulitlple characters to pass skill checks or perform certain spells in combat thanks to its subclass bonuses. Plus, with Charisma, you make the perfect party face to interact in dalogue and be the lead character in exploration. Below is what you can expect from the College of Lore Bard in BG3:
- The Hexblade dip front-loads power. Two Warlock levels give you Eldritch Blast with Agonizing Blast (slot-free ranged damage all game), Hex, the Shield spell, medium armor, and shield proficiency, so you are tougher and hit harder from level 1 while your Bard spellcasting catches up.
- Magical Secrets steals any class’s best spells. At Bard 10 (character level 12) you learn spells from the full game list, so your Bard picks up Fireball, Haste, Ice Storm, and more; the widest, most flexible spell list a caster can have.
- The best skills in the game. Bards get proficiency in three skills of your choice, Expertise doubles your proficiency in two of them, and Jack of All Trades adds half proficiency to every other skill. You are the party’s face, lockpicker, trap-finder, and knowledge hub all at once.
- Cutting Words is a reaction that breaks enemy turns. Spend a Bardic Inspiration to subtract a die from an enemy’s attack roll, ability check, or damage; you turn a boss’s hit into a miss or a saving throw into a failure from across the room.
- Control that ends encounters. Confusion, Hold Monster, and Glyph of Warding lock down whole packs, and with the highest Charisma in the party your save DCs land.
The weakness of the build is that it is a support and control caster, not a raw damage dealer. Its personal damage is lower than a Sorcerer’s or a martial’s, so it wins fights by disabling the enemy and empowering the party rather than by nuking. Starting with two Warlock levels also delays your Bardic Inspiration, Expertise, and Bard skills until character level 3, and you reach only one casting of Magical Secrets (at Bard 10) rather than two. Those are fair trades for the early durability, damage, and armor the Hexblade dip brings. But no class does more different jobs at once.
Skill Maxing: How Expertise and Jack of All Trades Work

Skill dominance is half the reason to play a Lore Bard, so here is exactly how it stacks. Three features combine to make you better at skills than any other class:
Proficiency (a wide spread of skills). You choose your skill proficiencies at character creation, and the College of Lore adds three more at Bard 3 (character level 5 in this build, since you dip Warlock first), so you are proficient in a huge spread of skills. Githyanki’s Astral Knowledge adds a whole ability’s worth of skills on top each rest.
Expertise (doubles two skills). At Bard 3 you choose two proficient skills and double your proficiency bonus in them. Put Expertise on your Charisma face skills (Performance and Persuasion) and you pass nearly every dialogue check in the game; late game, with 20+ Charisma and Expertise, your Performance and Persuasion bonuses are enormous.
Jack of All Trades (half proficiency in everything else). From Bard 2, you add half your proficiency bonus to every ability check you are not already proficient in. So even your untrained skills are above average, and there is no check you are bad at.
Put together: you have Expertise on your face skills, proficiency in a wide spread, and half-proficiency in everything else, on top of the party’s highest Charisma. You become the character who handles every conversation, every lock, every trap, and every knowledge check. Combined with the Guidance cantrip (from a Magical Secret or the Bard’s own list via a subclass, or a party Cleric), you can hit skill numbers nothing in the game can beat.
College of Lore Bard Character Creation

Note: this build recommends starting at level 1 as a Hexblade Warlock first. This allows you great weapon and armor choices, and a early powerful combo of Eldritch Blast and Hexblade that carries your damage throughout Act 1.
| Choice | Selection |
|---|---|
| Starting Class | Warlock (Hexblade), for the level 1-2 dip |
| Main Class | Bard (College of Lore, from character level 3) |
| Best Race | Githyanki |
| Background | Entertainer |
| Ability Scores | STR 8 DEX 14 CON 16 INT 10 WIS 10 CHA 16 |
| Starting Instrument | Violin |
| Skill Proficiencies | Deception, Intimidation, Persuasion (all Charisma; Performance maxed via Entertainer) |
| Expertise (Bard 3) | Performance and Persuasion |
Best Race for the College of Lore Bard Build

Githyanki is the pick for a skill-maxing Lore Bard: its Astral Knowledge feature grants proficiency in every skill of a chosen ability each long rest, which stacks with your already-huge skill list and pushes your coverage to nearly everything. It also gives medium armor proficiency (which fits your armor plan) and free Misty Step for mobility.
High Half-Elf and High Wood Elf are strong alternatives that add a free cantrip and, for the Wood subrace, movement and stealth. Any Charisma race works, but the Githyanki’s Astral Knowledge leans into the skill-monkey identity harder than anything else.
Best Ability Scores (point buy) for College of Lore Bard Build

Charisma is the most important ability score. It sets your spell save DC, your Eldritch Blast damage, your dialogue checks, and (with Expertise) your face skills. Run Charisma 16, Constitution 16 (concentration on your control spells is critical, and the extra HP plus medium armor makes you a durable frontline caster), and Dexterity 14 (which caps your medium-armor AC). Keep Intelligence and Wisdom at 10 for their skill checks; dump Strength.
Because you dip Hexblade Warlock, you get medium armor and shield proficiency, so your armor class comes from medium armor plus a shield plus Dexterity 14, not from Mage Armor. Keep Charisma odd at creation so Auntie Ethel’s Hair rounds it to 18 in Act 1, then push to 20 with your feats and higher with the Birthright hat and Mirror of Loss. Every point of Charisma raises your spell DC, your blast damage, and every Charisma skill check at once.
Best Background

Entertainer (Acrobatics, Performance) is the pick, because Performance is a Charisma skill; with Expertise and your high Charisma, your Performance check maxes out for dialogue and bardic checks. Take Deception, Intimidation, and Persuasion as your other proficiencies so every Charisma skill is covered.
Best Skills

Take the Charisma skills (Deception, Intimidation) plus Performance from your background, then put Expertise on Performance and Persuasion so your two most-used dialogue checks are doubled. At Bard 3 and later you add more proficiencies (Acrobatics, Insight, Perception); with Githyanki’s Astral Knowledge and Jack of All Trades on top, you cover nearly every check in the game.
College of Lore Bard Build Leveling Progression
The table lists the character level and class, what it unlocks, your recommended selections, and why each matters. This build takes two Warlock (Hexblade) levels first, then Bard from character level 3.
| Level | Unlock | Selections | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (Warlock 1) | Hexblade; Pact Magic; medium armor and shields | Cantrips: Eldritch Blast, Friends; Spells: Shield, Hex | Stronger to start; Eldritch Blast and Hex give slot-free damage you are not reliant on spell slots for |
| 2 (Warlock 2) | Eldritch Invocations | Spell: Hellish Rebuke; Invocations: Agonizing Blast, Devil’s Sight | Agonizing Blast adds Charisma to every beam; Devil’s Sight lets you fight from inside Darkness |
| 3 (Bard 1) | Multiclass into Bard; Bardic Inspiration; spellcasting | Cantrips: Vicious Mockery, Minor Illusion; Spells: Healing Word, Longstrider, Tasha’s Hideous Laughter, Speak with Animals | Bardic Inspiration and the Bard support kit come online; Tasha’s is early single-target control |
| 4 (Bard 2) | Jack of All Trades; Song of Rest | Spell: Thunderwave | Half-proficiency on every untrained skill; Thunderwave is early area damage and knockback |
| 5 (Bard 3) | College of Lore; Expertise; Cutting Words | Spell: Hold Person; Skill proficiencies: Acrobatics, Insight, Perception; Expertise: Performance, Persuasion | Expertise doubles your face skills; Cutting Words breaks enemy turns; Hold Person is single-target lockdown |
| 6 (Bard 4) | Feat: Ability Improvement (+2 CHA) | Cantrip: Mage Hand; Spell: Enhance Ability | Raise your spell DC and every Charisma check; Enhance Ability boosts skill checks and saves |
| 7 (Bard 5) | Font of Inspiration (Inspiration on short rest) | Spell: Glyph of Warding (area damage, any element) | Glyph of Warding is a strong set-piece area nuke you can pre-place |
| 8 (Bard 6) | Magical Secrets (two spells from any class); Countercharm | Spell: Invisibility (pre-buff for a surprise attack); Magical Secrets: Fireball, Haste | Fireball adds the area damage the Bard list lacks; Haste doubles an ally’s turn |
| 9 (Bard 7) | Level-4 spells | Spell: Confusion (huge area crowd control) | Confusion disables a whole pack for several turns |
| 10 (Bard 8) | Feat: Ability Improvement (+2 CHA, to 20) | Spell: Freedom of Movement (pre-buff) | Charisma 20 maximizes your spell DC and skills; Freedom of Movement keeps a key ally mobile |
| 11 (Bard 9) | Level-5 spells | Spell: Mass Cure Wounds | Party-wide healing to recover from a rough fight |
| 12 (Bard 10) | Magical Secrets (two more); Expertise (two more skills) | Cantrip: Light; Spell: Hold Monster; Magical Secrets: Ice Storm, Conjure Elemental; Expertise: Athletics, Acrobatics | Hold Monster paralyzes a boss for auto-crits; Ice Storm is area cold damage; Conjure Elemental adds a durable summon |
Here are the most critical choices for you to pick and why:
- Levels 1-2 (Warlock); Agonizing Blast and Devil’s Sight. These two levels front-load your build: Eldritch Blast with Agonizing Blast is slot-free damage all game, and Devil’s Sight plus a Darkness cloud is a strong defensive tool. You also gain medium armor and shields.
- Level 5 (Bard 3); College of Lore, Expertise, and Cutting Words. Expertise on Performance and Persuasion turns you into the party’s face; Cutting Words is a reaction that subtracts from an enemy’s attack, save, or damage, breaking their key turns.
- Level 8 (Bard 6); Magical Secrets (Fireball and Haste). Your steal from other classes; Fireball gives you the area damage the Bard list lacks, and Haste doubles an ally’s damage. This is where Lore becomes more than a normal Bard.
- Level 12 (Bard 10); Magical Secrets (Ice Storm, Conjure Elemental) and Hold Monster. Your second Magical Secrets set plus Hold Monster to paralyze bosses; Conjure Elemental adds a durable body to soak hits and add damage.
We recommend starting with the two Warlock levels for the early power spike, but if you would rather begin as a Bard (for Bardic Inspiration and the skill kit from the very start) and take the Warlock levels a bit later, you can, and the screenshots follow that starting point. Either way you end at Warlock 2 / Bard 10; only the order of the first few levels differs.
Best Spells, Cantrips & Magical Secrets

Cantrips. Eldritch Blast (from your Warlock levels, with Agonizing Blast) is your slot-free ranged damage all game; Vicious Mockery (damage plus Disadvantage on the target) is your at-will control cantrip; Friends, Minor Illusion, Mage Hand, and Light add utility.
Spells to prioritize:
- Warlock: Hex (extra damage and a stat debuff), Shield (+5 AC reaction), Hellish Rebuke (reaction fire damage)
- Level 1-2 (Bard): Tasha’s Hideous Laughter (single-target incapacitate), Healing Word, Hold Person, Thunderwave, Enhance Ability (skill and save boost)
- Level 3 (Bard): Glyph of Warding (pre-placed area damage), Fireball (via Magical Secrets), Haste (via Magical Secrets)
- Level 4-5 (Bard): Confusion (area control), Hold Monster, Freedom of Movement, Ice Storm (via Magical Secrets), Mass Cure Wounds
The must-haves: Hex and Eldritch Blast (your reliable slot-free damage), Confusion and Hold Monster (your control), Fireball and Ice Storm (Magical Secrets; the area damage the Bard list lacks), and Haste (Magical Secret; double an ally’s turn).
Magical Secrets (your signature). You reach Magical Secrets once, at Bard 6 (character level 8), and again at Bard 10 (character level 12). At Bard 6, take Fireball and Haste; Fireball gives you the area damage the Bard list lacks, and Haste doubles an ally’s turn. At Bard 10, take Ice Storm (area cold damage and control) and Conjure Elemental (a durable summon that soaks hits and adds damage). Magical Secrets is what turns the Lore Bard from a support caster into a caster who can do a bit of everything at a high level.
Multiclass Options

This build is Warlock 2 (Hexblade) / Bard 10 (College of Lore), and the two-level Warlock dip is a deliberate trade. Here’s the logic:
- Warlock 2 (Hexblade) gives you Eldritch Blast with the Agonizing Blast invocation (Charisma to every beam, so you have slot-free ranged damage all game), Hex (extra damage and a stat debuff), the Shield spell (+5 AC reaction), Devil’s Sight (fight from inside a Darkness cloud), and, from Hexblade’s Hex Warrior, medium armor and shield proficiency. Two Warlock levels make you tougher and give you real damage from level 1, before your Bard spellcasting comes online.
- Bard 10 (College of Lore) gives you Expertise and Cutting Words (Bard 3), Font of Inspiration, and one casting of Magical Secrets at Bard 6 (character level 8), where you steal Fireball and Haste. You reach up to level-5 Bard spells (Hold Monster) and the full skill kit.
Why trade the top two Bard levels for Warlock? The Bard’s own 6th-level spells are underwhelming compared to what other casters get, and you still reach Magical Secrets at Bard 10, so the last two pure-Bard levels give up little. In exchange, the Hexblade dip front-loads Eldritch Blast damage, the Shield spell, medium armor, and shields, all on the same Charisma stat, so you are stronger earlier and more durable throughout. Warlock and Bard sharing Charisma means the dip costs you no extra stat investment.
One tradeoff to know: starting Warlock means your Bardic Inspiration, Expertise, and Bard skill proficiencies do not arrive until character level 3 (your first Bard level). Your Charisma saving-throw proficiency carries over fine (both classes grant it), but you delay the Bard’s early skill and Inspiration power for the Warlock’s early damage and armor. If you would rather have the Bard features from level 1, you can start Bard and take the two Warlock levels later; our screenshots show a level 1 Bard so you can start there if you prefer.
Leveling order: take the two Warlock levels first (character levels 1-2) for the early Hexblade power, then go Bard from character level 3 onward, choosing College of Lore at your first Bard level. Your exact interleave is below.
Action Economy & Buff Stacking
Before combat, cast Haste on your party’s biggest damage dealer (it lasts, and a Hasted martial roughly doubles their output), pre-place a Glyph of Warding if you know where the fight starts, and keep Bardic Inspiration charges ready for Cutting Words. If you can open from stealth (Invisibility helps), line up a Fireball or Confusion on the tightest cluster.
The control turn:
- Action → Confusion on the pack, or Hold Monster on the single biggest threat, or Fireball (Magical Secret) a cluster.
- Bonus Action → Bardic Inspiration to a martial ally, or Healing Word to pick up a downed friend.
- Reaction → Cutting Words to turn an enemy’s hit into a miss or a save into a failure, or Hellish Rebuke (from your Warlock levels) when hit.
Ongoing:
- Refresh control as it expires, and keep Cutting Words up to break the enemy’s most dangerous rolls.
- Use Vicious Mockery for at-will chip damage and Disadvantage when you have nothing better to cast.
Your goal is to disable the enemy with Confusion or Hold Monster, empower your allies with Haste and Bardic Inspiration, break the enemy’s key turns with Cutting Words, and drop Eldritch Blast or Fireball for damage between control spells. You do not out-damage the enemy; you make sure they never get to act while your party does.
Gear Progression Path – Build

You want Charisma, spell save DC, and skill bonuses. Your Hexblade dip grants medium armor and shields, so you run medium armor with a quarterstaff and shield for a strong armor class, not a squishy robe.

Potions, Elixirs, and Consumables

Only one elixir can be active at a time.
- Elixir of Vigilance: guaranteed high initiative so you control the pack before the enemy acts.
- Elixir of the Colossus: durability for a caster that gets focused.
- Superior Elixir of Arcane Cultivation: a free spell slot each long rest for another control spell.
- Always carry: scrolls of any spell you did not learn (Bards can cast from scrolls), plus Guidance from a party member for skill checks.
Illithid Powers and Synergies

- Black Hole: pulls a scattered pack into one cluster so your Confusion and stolen Fireball hit all of them.
- Fracture Psyche: lowers a target’s saves so your control lands even more reliably.
- Luck of the Far Realms: a guaranteed crit for a stolen Fireball or a big Vicious Mockery.
- Charm: more social control, which fits the face-of-the-party identity.
Permanent Bonus Tracker

Note: We set Charisma to 16 for ease of play. However, you can set it to an odd number and get two additional Charisma bonuses. This is much more complex, but it frees up a feat for Alert if you choose to. Therefore, the recommendation below is if you drop Intelligence in Character Creation and get all the permanent bonuses in BG3:
| Bonus | Act | How | Charisma |
| Auntie Ethel’s Hair | 1 | Deal with Auntie Ethel | +1 to a stat; Charisma to round 17 to 18 |
| Mirror of Loss | 3 | Cloister of Sombre | +2 to a stat; Charisma |
| Birthright (hat) | 3 | Rolan, Sorcerous Sundries | +2 Charisma (worn, to 22) |
| Patriar’s Memory | 3 | Stormshore Tabernacle | +1 Charisma (toward 24) |
Party Synergies

The Lore Bard is the party’s controller, buffer, and face; it makes everyone else better.
- A frontliner (Lae’zel, Karlach): push them to the front and provide with Haste buff for max damage.
- Support Build (Shadowheart): Used as a buffer and healer, while you focus on crowd control.
- A striker (Astarion): Use as a dual-wielding melee Rogue that focuses on single-target burst.
Honour Mode Tips
- Open with control, every fight. Confusion on the pack removes most of the enemy team before it acts; this is worth more than any damage you could deal.
- Stack spell save DC with the Helmet of Arcane Acuity so your control lands on the tough saves that matter in Honour Mode.
- Hold concentration with Constitution 14+, the Amulet of Greater Health, and careful positioning; your control ends the instant your concentration drops.
- Bank Bardic Inspiration for Cutting Words on a boss’s big attack; turning one lethal hit into a miss can save a run.
- Haste your best damage dealer before the fight, and be ready to re-cast it if the target takes a hit and drops concentration on their end.
BG3 College of Lore Bard Build FAQ
1. Is the College of Lore Bard good in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Yes, it’s the best skill proficiency and utility caster in the game. A light Hexblade Warlock dip front-loads Eldritch Blast damage and armor, Magical Secrets steals any class’s best spells, Expertise and Jack of All Trades make you dominate every skill check, and Cutting Words plus Confusion control whole fights. It’s the most versatile build in the game.
2. What is Magical Secrets and what should I take?
Magical Secrets (at Bard 6 and Bard 10, which are character levels 8 and 12 in this build) lets you learn spells from any class. Take Fireball and Haste first (area damage and a party buff the Bard list lacks), then Ice Storm and Conjure Elemental. It is what makes the Lore Bard so flexible.
3. How do I max skills on a Lore Bard?
Take Expertise (Bard 3) on your two most-used checks (Persuasion, Sleight of Hand), spread your proficiencies wide, and rely on Jack of All Trades for half-proficiency in everything else. Stack Charisma to 24 and you pass nearly every dialogue and utility check in the game.
4. Should the Lore Bard multiclass?
This build dips two Warlock (Hexblade) levels for early Eldritch Blast damage, the Shield spell, and medium armor, then goes Bard 10. The Bard’s own top two levels are weak (its 6th-level spells lag other casters), so trading them for the Hexblade dip makes you stronger early and more durable throughout, at the cost of one Magical Secrets casting. If you would rather stay pure, Bard 12 gives you both Magical Secrets castings and 6th-level spells instead.
5. Does the Lore Bard deal enough damage?
Its personal damage is moderate; it wins by controlling the enemy and empowering the party (Haste, Bardic Inspiration) rather than by nuking. With a stolen Fireball and Vicious Mockery it contributes damage, but its job is control and support.
6. What’s the best race for a Lore Bard?
Githyanki for Astral Knowledge (proficiency in a whole ability’s skills each rest), medium armor, and free Misty Step, which leans hardest into the skill-monkey identity. High Half-Elf or High Wood Elf are strong alternatives with a free cantrip and, for the Wood subrace, movement and stealth.
