The College of Valour is the martial Bard, and this build turns it into one of the highest sustained-damage ranged characters in the game. A dual hand crossbow gunslinger who fires a hail of Sharpshooter bolts every single turn while still carrying the Bard’s full support kit. Valour’s signature, Combat Inspiration, hands allies a die to add to their attacks and armor class, and its Extra Attack at Bard 6 is the launch pad for a devastating multiclass.
The trick is stacking attacks. Bard 6 gives you Extra Attack (two shots per action), a Thief Rogue dip gives you a second bonus action (a second off-hand crossbow shot), and a Fighter dip gives you Action Surge (a whole extra action). Add Sharpshooter’s +10 damage per hit and you fire six or more bolts a turn, each hitting hard.
This guide covers a Bard 6 (Valour) / Rogue 4 (Thief) / Fighter 2 dual hand crossbow build using Dexterity as it’s primary ability score. If you want to delete bosses from range and still be the party’s face, this is the build.
This build guide is updated for Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8, Community Update #36, Version Number: 4.1.1.7209685.

Why Use the College of Valour Bard Build?
What makes the College of Valour Build effective and fun is it’s spellcasting, support, and martial ranged damgae. You can shut down single targets or groups of enemies with your spells, while shooting range attacks from a distance. Moreover, you can increase an ally’s ability score and influence the overall party’s effectiveness. And with decent Charsiama, and tons of skill bonuses, you can do well to influence dialogue and pass skill checks during exploration. Here’s what you can expect from a College of Valour build in BG3:
- A hail of Sharpshooter bolts every turn. Extra Attack, a second bonus action from Thief, and Action Surge stack to six or more hand crossbow shots a turn, each with Sharpshooter’s +10 damage. Your sustained ranged damage rivals a dedicated archer.
- You still buff the party. Combat Inspiration hands allies a die for their attacks and armor class, and you keep Bardic Inspiration, Healing Word, and Longstrider; you deal top damage and support at the same time.
- Charisma face on a martial. Unlike a pure archer, your Bard levels keep your Charisma high, so you are still the party’s face in dialogue while dealing ranged damage.
- Extreme first-turn burst. With Action Surge and a Haste Potion, a single opening turn can fire eight bolts, enough to delete a boss or a priority caster before it acts.
The weakness of this build is that it is the most complex Bard to build. With three classes and a specific leveling order. Its damage relies on having two hand crossbows and Sharpshooter online, so it is weaker in the very early game before those come together. And it splits its attention across Dexterity (attacks) and Charisma (spells and dialogue), though this build keeps Dexterity as the clear priority. Once assembled, it is a ranged powerhouse.
College of Valour Bard Character Creation

| Choice | Selection |
|---|---|
| Classes | Bard, Rogue, Fighter |
| Subclasses | College of Valour (Bard), Thief (Rogue) |
| Best Race | Githyanki |
| Background | Charlatan |
| Ability Scores | STR 8 DEX 17 CON 16 INT 8 WIS 10 CHA 14 |
| Starting Instrument | Violin |
| Skill Proficiencies | Acrobatics, Persuasion, Intimidation |
| Fighting Style (Fighter) | Archery (+2 to ranged attack rolls) |
Best Race for the College of Valour Bard Build

Githyanki is the pick for the extra mobility: its Astral Knowledge grants skill proficiencies each rest, and it gives free Misty Step to reposition a sniper out of danger, plus medium armor proficiency for a better armor class.
Wood Elf is a strong alternative if you want per-turn movement speed and stealth; Half-Elf adds a free cantrip and Charisma for the Bard side. Any Dexterity-friendly race works; the goal is a high Dexterity and good mobility.
Best Ability Scores (point buy) for College of Valour Bard Build

Dexterity is your attack stat; it drives your crossbow accuracy, your damage, your armor class, and your initiative. Run Dexterity 17 (round to 18 with a permanent boost), Constitution 16 (concentration on Haste and control, plus a healthy HP pool for a frontline sniper), and Charisma 14 (for your Bard spells and dialogue). Dump Strength and Intelligence; keep Wisdom at 10.
Keep Dexterity odd at creation so Auntie Ethel’s Hair rounds it to 18 in Act 1. Your feats go into Sharpshooter first, then a Dexterity Ability Improvement to 20; Charisma stays at 14, which is enough for your support spells and a solid face, while Dexterity does the heavy lifting. This is a Dexterity build first and a Charisma build second.
Best Background

Charlatan (Deception, Sleight of Hand) fits the Bard and pairs Sleight of Hand with your Dexterity for lockpicking and pickpocketing.
Best Skills

Take Charisma-based skills like Intimidation and Persuasion and Acrobatics with your last selection.
College of Valour Bard Build Leveling Progression
The table lists the character level and class, what it unlocks, your recommended selections, and why each matters. This build takes Bard to 6 first, then Rogue to 4, then Fighter 2.
| Class | Unlock | Selection | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (Bard 1) | Bardic Inspiration; spellcasting | Cantrips: Vicious Mockery, Friends; Spells: Healing Word, Faerie Fire, Tasha’s Hideous Laughter, Longstrider | Faerie Fire gives Advantage (offsets Sharpshooter); Longstrider is a lasting movement pre-buff |
| 2 (Bard 2) | Jack of All Trades; Song of Rest | Spell: Thunderwave | Half-proficiency on every skill; Thunderwave is early area damage and knockback |
| 3 (Bard 3) | College of Valour; Combat Inspiration; Expertise | Spell: Invisibility; Skill proficiencies: Intimidation, Persuasion | Combat Inspiration buffs allies’ attacks and AC; Invisibility opens combat with a surprise round; Expertise on your face skills |
| 4 (Bard 4) | Feat: Sharpshooter | Cantrip: Minor Illusion; Spell: Hold Person | Sharpshooter is your core damage feat (+10 per shot); Hold Person lets your bolts auto-crit a held target |
| 5 (Bard 5) | Font of Inspiration (Inspiration on short rest) | Spell: Glyph of Warding (pre-buff trap and area damage) | Glyph of Warding is a pre-placed area nuke that also softens a fight before it starts |
| 6 (Bard 6) | Extra Attack | Spell: Stinking Cloud (area denial) | Extra Attack fires two shots per action; Stinking Cloud is a control zone for packs |
| 7 (Rogue 1) | Multiclass Rogue; Sneak Attack; Expertise | Skill proficiencies: Sleight of Hand, Acrobatics; Expertise: Sleight of Hand | Sneak Attack adds damage to your first hit each turn with Advantage; more skill coverage |
| 8 (Rogue 2) | Cunning Action (Dash, Disengage, Hide as a bonus action) | Bonus-action Hide and Disengage keep a sniper mobile and safe | |
| 9 (Rogue 3) | Thief; Fast Hands (second bonus action) | Fast Hands is the key: a second off-hand crossbow shot every turn | |
| 10 (Rogue 4) | Feat: Ability Improvement (+2 DEX, to 20) | Dexterity 20 maximizes your accuracy and damage | |
| 11 (Fighter 1) | Multiclass Fighter; Fighting Style: Archery (+2 ranged attacks) | Archery offsets Sharpshooter’s -5 to hit | |
| 12 (Fighter 2) | Action Surge | A full extra action; two more crossbow shots on your burst turn |
Here are the most critical choices for you to pick and why:
- Level 4 (Bard 4); Sharpshooter. Your core damage feat; +10 damage on every crossbow shot. The -5 to hit is covered by Archery, Advantage from the Risky Ring or Invisibility, and accuracy gear.
- Level 6 (Bard 6); Extra Attack. The foundation; every action now fires two shots instead of one.
- Level 9 (Rogue 3); Thief and Fast Hands. The single biggest multiplier: a second bonus action means a second off-hand crossbow shot every single turn.
- Level 12 (Fighter 2); Action Surge. Your burst button; a full extra action for two more shots, turning a big turn into six-plus bolts, once per short rest.
Best Spells, Cantrips & Combat Inspiration

Cantrips. Vicious Mockery (damage plus Disadvantage on the target) is a fine off-turn cantrip; Friends helps in dialogue. Your damage comes from crossbows, not cantrips, so your spell picks lean toward support and control.
Spells to prioritize:
- Level 1: Faerie Fire (Advantage, which offsets Sharpshooter and enables Sneak Attack), Healing Word, Tasha’s Hideous Laughter
- Level 2: Hold Person (single-target lockdown that lets your shots auto-crit), Invisibility (open combat with a surprise round), Stinking Cloud (area denial)
- Level 3: Glyph of Warding (elemental damage and trap), Stinking Cloud (area denial)
The must-haves: Invisibility (open a fight with a surprise round, and it enables Sneak Attack that turn), Faerie Fire (early Advantage that also reveals invisible), and Hold Person (paralyze a target so your bolts auto-crit). Your permanent Advantage comes from the Risky Ring, so you do not need to spend a spell on it every turn.
Combat Inspiration (your subclass feature). Combat Inspiration lets an ally add your Bardic Inspiration die to a weapon damage roll or their armor class; hand it to your party’s other damage dealer or to a tank who needs the AC. It is the support half of the build: you deal top ranged damage and still make your allies better.
Multiclass Options

This build is Bard 6 (Valour) / Rogue 4 (Thief) / Fighter 2, and every level has a job. Here’s the logic:
- Bard 6 (College of Valour) gives you Extra Attack (the two-shots-per-action foundation), Combat Inspiration (buff allies’ attacks and AC), Bardic Inspiration, and a full set of Bard support spells (Healing Word, Haste, Invisibility). Six Bard levels is the sweet spot; it secures Extra Attack and a strong support kit.
- Rogue 4 (Thief) gives you Fast Hands at Thief 3 (a second bonus action, so a second off-hand crossbow shot every turn), Sneak Attack damage, and a feat at Rogue 4 (a second Sharpshooter-supporting pick or a Dexterity bump). The extra bonus action is the single biggest damage multiplier in the build.
- Fighter 2 gives you the Archery fighting style (+2 to ranged attacks, which offsets Sharpshooter’s penalty) and Action Surge (a full extra action for two more shots, once per short rest).
Why this exact split? Extra Attack (Bard 6) plus Fast Hands (Thief 3) plus Action Surge (Fighter 2) is the maximum number of hand crossbow attacks you can stack in a 12-level build, and Rogue 4 grabs the extra feat while the Fighter fighting style keeps your Sharpshooter shots landing. It is the community-standard dual crossbow shell.
Leveling order: start Bard and take it to 6 for Extra Attack (grabbing Valour at Bard 3 and Sharpshooter at Bard 4), then Rogue to 4 (Thief at Rogue 3 for Fast Hands, a feat at Rogue 4), then Fighter 2 (Archery, then Action Surge). Your exact interleave is below.
Action Economy & Buff Stacking

Before combat, cast Invisibility on yourself for a surprise round where you can. The Risky Ring gives you permanent Advantage without spending a spell. Short rest before a boss so Action Surge is ready, and make sure your crossbow set is equipped.
The burst turn (the whole build):
- Action → two main-hand crossbow shots (Extra Attack), each with Sharpshooter’s +10; the first also gets Sneak Attack.
- Action Surge → two more main-hand shots.
- Bonus Action → an off-hand crossbow shot.
- Second Bonus Action (Fast Hands) → a second off-hand shot.
That is six shots in one turn (eight with a Haste action), each carrying +10 from Sharpshooter, all at Advantage from the Risky Ring. Few bosses survive it.
Ongoing:
- Action → two shots; Bonus Actions → two off-hand shots. You fire four bolts a turn even without Action Surge.
- Hand out Combat Inspiration or Bardic Inspiration when you have a spare bonus action, or Healing Word to pick up an ally.
The Risky Ring keeps you at permanent Advantage, so you rain Sharpshooter bolts every turn and save Action Surge for the boss. Your damage never runs dry, and you buff the party between volleys.
Gear Progression Path – College of Valour Build

You want two hand crossbows, Dexterity, accuracy, and crit-threshold gear. This build runs two weapon sets: a crossbow set you actually shoot with, and a melee set whose weapons are passive buff sources that lower your critical-hit threshold while equipped. Keep the crit-lowering melee weapons on to shrink your crit range, then swap to your crossbows to fire. The Risky Ring (permanent Advantage) and two solid hand crossbows are the build-defining pieces.

| Weapon 2 | Hellfire Hand Crossbow | Deals burning and Scorching Ray spell. | Carried over from Act 2. |
| Weapon 2 (OH) | Ne’er Misser | +1 and Magic Missile. | Carried over from Act 2. |
Note on the two weapon sets: the melee set (Knife of the Undermountain King, then Bloodthirst, plus the Shade-Slayer Cloak) exists purely to lower your critical-hit threshold. Those weapons apply their crit-range reduction passively while equipped, so stacking them shrinks the number you need to crit; combined with the Risky Ring’s Advantage, you crit on a huge share of your six-plus shots a turn.
Keep the crit-lowering set equipped for its passive buff, then fire your Hellfire Hand Crossbow and Ne’er Misser set. Killer’s Sweetheart then guarantees a crit after each kill, and Surgeon’s Subjugation Amulet turns a crit into a paralyze for an auto-crit follow-up. Two solid hand crossbows matter more than any single legendary; keep both hands firing.
Potions, Elixirs, and Consumables

Only one elixir can be active at a time.
- Elixir of Bloodlust: your best elixir; an extra action after your first kill, and on a multi-shot build you finish enemies constantly, so it chains into extra full actions.
- Elixir of the Colossus or a Dexterity elixir: durability or a Dexterity boost.
- Special arrows / bolts: carry a stack of elemental and utility bolts (Arrow of Many Targets, Arrow of Ice) for extra burst or control on a key turn.
- Always carry: Oil of Sharpness or Accuracy before a burst turn, and healing potions.
Illithid Powers and Synergies

- Luck of the Far Realms: force a crit on a Sharpshooter shot for a huge single hit; on a multi-shot turn, one guaranteed crit is a big spike.
- Cull the Weak: free finishing damage on low enemies, which feeds the Elixir of Bloodlust extra-action loop.
- Favourable Beginnings: a bonus on your first attack against a target; a stronger opener.
- Black Hole: clusters a pack so an Arrow of Many Targets or a spread of shots hits several enemies.
Permanent Bonus Tracker

| What | Act | How | Bonus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auntie Ethel’s Hair | 1 | Deal with Auntie Ethel | +1 to a stat; Dexterity to round 17 to 18 |
| Mirror of Loss | 3 | Cloister of Sombre Embrace | +2 to a stat; Dexterity to reach 22 with one feat |
Party Synergies

The Valour Bard is a ranged damage dealer that also buffs; it wants a party that sets up its shots and holds the front.
- Melee (Lae’zel Fighter): anchors the melee so your sniper fires from safety; you buff them with Combat Inspiration.
- A controller (Gale Wizard): holds or hypnotizes the pack so your bolts hit helpless, stationary targets (and land Sneak Attack crits on held enemies).
- Support (Shadowheart Cleric): Use her to buff and heal the group.
Valour Bard (you, ranged damage) + a frontliner + a controller + a flex support or second damage dealer.
Honour Mode Tips
- Get two hand crossbows and Sharpshooter online as soon as possible; the build is average until both come together, then it takes off.
- Equip the Risky Ring for permanent Advantage; it offsets Sharpshooter’s penalty, enables Sneak Attack, and raises your crit rate across every shot. Open from Invisibility for a surprise round where you can.
- Save Action Surge for the boss; it is a short-rest resource, so open the scariest fight with an eight-shot burst.
- Cover the -5 to hit with Archery, Advantage, and accuracy gear before you rely on Sharpshooter; a missed shot is wasted.
- Short rest before boss fights to refresh Action Surge and Bardic Inspiration.
BG3 College of Valour Build FAQ
1. Is the College of Valour Bard good in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Yes; multiclassed as a dual hand crossbow build (Bard 6 / Rogue 4 / Fighter 2), it is one of the highest sustained ranged damage dealers in the game, firing six or more Sharpshooter bolts a turn while still buffing the party with Combat Inspiration and Bardic Inspiration.
2. Why the Bard 6 / Rogue 4 / Fighter 2 split?
Bard 6 gives Extra Attack (two shots per action), Thief Rogue 3 gives Fast Hands (a second off-hand crossbow shot), and Fighter 2 gives Action Surge (a full extra action). Together they stack to six-plus hand crossbow shots a turn, and Rogue 4 grabs an extra feat while Fighter’s Archery style keeps your Sharpshooter shots landing.
3. Do I need two hand crossbows?
Yes; a hand crossbow in each hand is what lets your bonus actions fire off-hand shots. Two solid hand crossbows matter more than any single legendary weapon; keep both hands firing.
4. How do I offset Sharpshooter’s -5 to hit?
The Archery fighting style (+2) and permanent Advantage from the Risky Ring; you can also open from Invisibility or Hide for a surprise round. With Advantage up, Sharpshooter’s penalty is easily covered and you crit often.
5. Is this build a caster or an archer?
It is a ranged martial first (Dexterity, crossbows, Sharpshooter) and a support caster second. It keeps the Bard’s Combat Inspiration, Haste, Invisibility, and Healing Word, so it deals top ranged damage and buffs the party, but its damage comes from bolts, not spells.
6. What’s the best race for a Valour Bard?
Githyanki for the free Misty Step mobility, Astral Knowledge skills, and medium armor proficiency. Wood Elf is a strong alternative for per-turn movement speed and stealth; Half-Elf adds a free cantrip and Charisma for the Bard side.
