Eldritch Blast is the best cantrip in Baldur’s Gate 3, and this guide is built to do one thing better than any other character in the game: fire a wall of force-damage beams every single turn, forever, without ever running out of resources. You take just two Warlock levels to steal Eldritch Blast and its invocations, then spend the rest in Sorcerer to multiply the blast with Metamagic, Charisma stacking, and Sorcery Points.
Eldritch Blast rolls a separate attack for each beam; every beam is its own chance to critically hit. Fire three beams and you get three rolls at a crit every turn; six beams (with Quickened Spell and Haste) is six rolls. So if you lower your critical-hit threshold with gear, you crit constantly, and each crit adds bonus damage on every beam.
This guide covers a Sorcerer 10 / Warlock 2 build tuned to maximize Eldritch Blast damage. It relies on one cantrip the entire game, and that cantrip scales at every level. If you want to delete a target from across the map every turn, this is the build.
This build guide is updated for Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8, Community Update #36, Version Number: 4.1.1.7209685.

Why Use the Eldritch Blast Build?

The main reason to use the Eldritch Blast build is that it’s a simple yet powerful cantrip. If you plan on Tactician or Honour Mode, you are constantly babysitting spell slots and long rests. Especially in early levels, where you can only cast one or two highly impactful spells. The Eldritch Blast setup remains strong at the start, all the way through, giving you the best cantrip but also high-powered spells when you need AOE or survival. Here’s what you can expect with the EB Build in BG3:
- It never runs out. Eldritch Blast is a cantrip, so your primary damage costs no spell slots; you can fire it at full power every turn of every fight without resting.
- Charisma lands on every beam twice. Agonizing Blast (from the Warlock dip) adds your Charisma to each beam, and the Potent Robe adds it again, so at six beams a turn you get roughly +60 damage from Charisma alone before dice.
- Metamagic doubles your output. Quickened Spell fires Eldritch Blast as a bonus action, so you can blast twice in one turn; Sorcery Points convert into extra Sorcerer slots for a nova when you need one.
The one downside is repetitiveness. You will cast the same cantrip most of the game, which some players find boring (though the reliability is the point). It is stat- and gear-dependent (it wants high Charisma, the Potent Robe, and the crit-range gear to hit its ceiling), and it is squishier than a melee carry. And, honestly, it is a Sorcerer build wearing a Warlock’s cantrip, which is why on our Warlock ranking it is an honorable mention rather than a Patron pick. But for pure ranged damage that never runs dry, nothing beats it.
How Eldritch Blast Scales: The Damage Math

Eldritch Blast fires a beam that deals 1d10 force damage, and it gains more beams as your character level rises (not your class level): a second beam at character level 5, a third at level 11. Each beam is a separate attack roll, which is what makes the multipliers so strong; every damage bonus that applies “per beam” is multiplied by the number of beams.

The stacked bonuses, all applied to each beam:
- Base: 1d10 force damage per beam.
- Agonizing Blast: + your Charisma modifier per beam.
- Potent Robe: + your Charisma modifier per beam (a second time).
- Spellmight Gloves / Markoheshkir / other riders: more flat or elemental damage per beam.
At character level 12 with three beams and 22 Charisma (+6), each beam is 1d10 + 6 (Agonizing) + 6 (Potent Robe) = 1d10 + 12, and you fire three of them, then Quickened Spell fires all three again in the same turn for six beams total. That is six attack rolls, each around 1d10 + 12 plus any gear riders, in a single turn, every turn, at range, for no spell slots.

Now add crits. Each of those six beams is a separate attack roll, so each can crit independently. Lower your crit threshold with gear and you crit on a wider range: The Deadshot (crit on 17+), Sarevok’s Horned Helmet (18+), Spell Sniper (a natural 19), and Elixir of Viciousness all stack.

At six beams a turn with a crit range of 17-20, you expect to crit two or three times every turn, and each crit doubles that beam’s dice, adds the Craterflesh Gloves Force damage, and (with Hex up) crits the Hex die too. This is why the volume of beams matters so much: it is not just six chunks of damage; it is six independent chances to crit, several of which land every round.
Eldritch Blast Build Character Creation

| Choice | Selection |
|---|---|
| Character | Tav (or Dark Urge) |
| Class | Sorcerer (start here for the Constitution save proficiency) |
| Subclass | Draconic Bloodline |
| Best Race | High Half-Elf |
| Background | Charlatan |
| Ability Scores | STR 8 DEX 16 CON 14 INT 10 WIS 10 CHA 16 |
| Skill Proficiencies | Intimidation, Persuasion |
Best Race for the Eldritch Blast Build

High Half-Elf is the best choice because it grants a free cantrip (take Fire Bolt or Light), Darkvision, Fey Ancestry, and shield proficiency for a bit of extra AC on a squishy caster.
Drow is a strong alternative for Faerie Fire (Advantage to land your beams, which also raises your effective crit chance) and Darkness synergy with the Warlock dip’s Devil’s Sight. Any Charisma race works since your power is entirely in the blast, not your body.
Best Ability Scores (point buy) for Eldritch Blast Build

Charisma is the most important ability score and should be set to 16 at least in character creation. Every point adds damage to every beam twice (Agonizing Blast plus Potent Robe) and raises your accuracy. Run Charisma 16 and Dexterity 16 (AC and initiative for a clothing caster), with Constitution 14 (concentration on Hex and Haste, plus HP). Dump Strength and Wisdom.
On the even Charisma: 16 (even) is clean, but if you plan to chase the permanent bonuses (Auntie Ethel’s Hair, the Birthright hat, Mirror of Loss, Patriar’s Memory), you can start Charisma at 17 (odd) so Ethel’s +1 rounds you to 18. Either way, stack the boosts to reach Charisma 24 by late game; at 24 Charisma (+7), every beam carries +14 from Charisma alone, before dice or crits.
Best Background

Charlatan or another Charisma background fits; take Intimidation and Persuasion so your high Charisma makes you the party’s face in dialogue.
Best Skills

If you selected the Charlatan background, take Intimidation and Persuasion as your skill proficiencies here.
Leveling Progression – Eldritch Blast Build
Sorcerer spells are learned permanently, so choose carefully. The table lists the class level, the key feature, your recommended selections, and why each matters.
| Level | Unlock | Selection | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (Sorcerer 1) | Draconic Bloodline (Black dragon); Sorcerer spellcasting | Cantrips: Fire Bolt, Light, Friends, Ray of Frost, Blade Ward; Spells: Chromatic Orb, Magic Missile | Start Sorcerer for the Constitution save proficiency (vital for holding Haste); Black ancestry gives the Grease spell for control |
| 2 (Warlock 1) | Warlock (Hexblade Subclass) | Cantrips: Eldritch Blast, Mage Hand; Spells: Hex, Shield | Eldritch Blast and Hex are the core of the whole build |
| 3 (Warlock 2) | Eldritch Invocations: Agonizing Blast, Devil’s Sight | Spell: Hellish Rebuke | Agonizing Blast adds Charisma to every beam; Devil’s Sight can see in Darkness |
| 4 (Sorcerer 2) | Metamagic: Careful, Twinned; Sorcery Points | Spell: Shield | Careful protects allies from your area spells; Shield is a reaction defense |
| 5 (Sorcerer 3) | Level-2 Sorcerer spells; Metamagic: Quickened | Spell: Darkness | Quickened fires Eldritch Blast as a bonus action for a second full blast; Darkness pairs with Devil’s Sight |
| 6 (Sorcerer 4) | Feat: Ability Improvement (+2 CHA) | Cantrip: Minor Illusion; Spell: Misty Step | Every point of Charisma is double damage per beam |
| 7 (Sorcerer 5) | Level-3 spells; Eldritch Blast second beam online (character level 5) | Spell: Fireball | Your damage jumps to two beams; Fireball is a nova option for packs |
| 8 (Sorcerer 6) | Draconic resilience scaling | Spell: Haste | Haste gives an extra action, which is another full Eldritch Blast every turn |
| 9 (Sorcerer 7) | Level-4 spells | Spell: Mirror Image | Concentration-free defense for a squishy caster |
| 10 (Sorcerer 8) | Feat: Ability Improvement (+2 CHA) | Spell: Counterspell | Toward 24 Charisma; Counterspell denies the enemy caster |
| 11 (Sorcerer 9) | Level-5 spells; Eldritch Blast third beam online (character level 11) | Spell: Cone of Cold | Three beams means three crit chances a turn; Cone of Cold is a huge nuke |
| 12 (Sorcerer 10) | Draconic feature; Metamagic: Heightened | Cantrip: Bursting Sinew; Spell: Ice Storm or Invisibility | Heightened forces Disadvantage on a save when you need control to land |
Here are the most critical choices for you to pick and why:
- Sorcerer 6: Haste. Cast on yourself (hold concentration with your Constitution save proficiency) for an extra action, which is another full Eldritch Blast, and another set of crit rolls, every turn.
- Warlock 2: Agonizing Blast. The single most important pick in the build; it adds your Charisma to every beam, which is most of your damage.
- Sorcerer 3: Quickened Spell. Lets you cast Eldritch Blast as a bonus action, so you fire the whole blast twice in one turn; this roughly doubles your beam count, and therefore your crit chances.
- Level 5 and 11; the beam breakpoints. Eldritch Blast gains its second beam at character level 5 and its third at 11. Every extra beam is another independent crit chance, so these are the levels your crit-fishing scales up.
Best Cantrips, Invocations & Metamagic

Cantrips. Eldritch Blast is the build; everything else is secondary. Take Minor Illusion to group enemies and Ray of Frost or Firebolt as a situational backup for force-resistant enemies (rare).
Invocations (from Warlock 2):
- Agonizing Blast (mandatory): Charisma to every beam.
- Devil’s Sight if you plan to fight from inside Darkness for Advantage.
Metamagic (from Sorcerer):
- Quickened Spell (mandatory): fire Eldritch Blast as a bonus action for a second full blast each turn.
- Twinned Spell: cast Haste on yourself and an ally at once, or hit two targets with a single-target spell.
- Heightened Spell or Distant Spell as your third, for control or range.
Key spells to support the blast: Hex (extra damage per beam and a stat debuff; up every fight), Haste (an extra action equals another blast), Shield (reaction defense), and Counterspell (deny the enemy caster). You rarely need offensive spells because the blast is your damage; your Sorcerer slots mostly fuel Haste, Quicken, and utility.
Multiclass Options

This build is Sorcerer 10 / Warlock 2, and the split is deliberately Sorcerer-heavy because the Warlock’s only job here is to hand over Eldritch Blast and two invocations. Here’s the logic:
- Warlock 2 gives you Eldritch Blast and two Eldritch Invocations: Agonizing Blast (Charisma to every beam, the single most important pick) and Repelling Blast (knockback on every beam) or Devil’s Sight (fight from inside Darkness). That is the entire reason to touch Warlock; two levels is all you need.
- Sorcerer 10 gives you Metamagic (Quickened Spell to fire the blast twice a turn, Twinned Spell, Heightened Spell), a large pool of Sorcery Points to convert into extra slots or fuel Quicken, Draconic Bloodline for free armor class (Draconic Resilience) and elemental scaling, and access to Sorcerer spells like Haste (which gives you even more attacks), Shield, and Counterspell.
Why Sorcerer over more Warlock? Because Warlock only offers Eldritch Blast and invocations for this build, and you get all of that in two levels. Everything that multiplies the blast, Quickened Spell, Sorcery Points, Haste, Draconic Resilience- comes from Sorcerer, so you want as many Sorcerer levels as possible. This is why the build is an honorable-mention “Warlock” build: mechanically it’s a Sorcerer that dipped Warlock for the cantrip.
Action Economy & Buff Stacking

Before combat, cast Hex on the priority target (extra damage on every beam that hits it), and Haste on yourself for the extra action. If you can open from stealth, line up your first volley on the most dangerous enemy.
The nova turn:
- Bonus Action → Quickened Eldritch Blast (a full set of beams).
- Action → Eldritch Blast again (another full set of beams).
- Haste Action → Eldritch Blast a third time.
That is three full Eldritch Blasts in one turn (nine beams at level 11+), each beam carrying double your Charisma, most of them able to knock the target around with Repelling Blast. Few bosses survive it.
Sustained turns: without Quicken and Haste up, you still fire one full Eldritch Blast every turn for free, forever, so your damage floor never drops. Move Hex to a fresh target when its host dies.
Gear Progression Path – Eldritch Blast Build

Everything here serves the blast: Charisma, per-beam damage, accuracy, and a lowered crit threshold. The Potent Robe (Charisma to every beam) and the Act 3 crit core (Craterflesh Gloves plus crit-range gear) are the most important pieces

| Weapon 2 | The Deadshot | Lowers Critical | Stormshore Armoury sold by Fytz |
Note: the crit core is Craterflesh Gloves + Killer’s Sweetheart + The Deadshot + Sarevok’s Helmet + Risky Ring. The Deadshot and Sarevok’s Helmet widen your crit range (crit on 17+), Risky Ring’s permanent Advantage makes each beam more likely to hit that range, and Craterflesh Gloves add Force damage on every one of those crits (it triggers per beam, so a triple-crit turn adds it three times).
Killer’s Sweetheart guarantees a full critical blast after any kill. Because you fire many beams a turn, several of them crit every round, which is exactly why the crit stack out-damages a flat rider like the Spellmight Gloves on this build. If you would rather have raw per-beam damage than crits, Spellmight Gloves (1d8 per beam) remain a strong alternative in the glove slot.
Potions, Elixirs, and Consumables

Only one elixir can be active at a time.
- Elixir of Viciousness: The number you need to roll a Critical Hit while attacking is reduced by 1. This effect can stack.
- Elixir of the Colossus or Draconic Elixir: durability so your squishy blaster survives being focused.
- Elixir of Bloodlust: an extra action after your first kill; another full Eldritch Blast on kill turns.
- Potion of Speed: stack with Haste and Quicken for a truly absurd nova turn.
- Always carry: Arcane Cultivation elixirs for extra slots (fuel more Haste), and scrolls of Darkness if you took Devil’s Sight.
Illithid Powers and Synergies

- Black Hole: pulls a pack into one cluster so your Repelling Blast peels them and your beams can spread across grouped targets.
- Luck of the Far Realms: force a crit on a beam for a big spike.
- Cull the Weak: finishing damage that feeds the Elixir of Bloodlust extra-action turns.
- Fly: repositioning to keep your ranged blaster at safe distance and clear line of sight.
Permanent Bonus Tracker

Every permanent bonus goes into Charisma; each point is doubled on every beam:
| Auntie Ethel’s Hair | 1 | Deal with Auntie Ethel | +1 to a stat; Charisma to round 17 to 18 |
| Mirror of Loss | 3 | Cloister of Sombre Embrace | +2 to a stat; Charisma |
| Birthright (hat) | 3 | Rolan, Sorcerous Sundries | +2 Charisma (worn, to 22) |
| Patriar’s Memory | 3 | Cloister of Sombre Embrace | +1 Charisma (toward 24) |
At Charisma 24 (+7), every single beam carries +14 from Charisma alone (Agonizing Blast plus Potent Robe), before dice or any other rider; this is why the build funnels every bonus into Charisma.
Party Synergies
The Eldritch Blast cannon is a pure ranged damage dealer; it wants a party that keeps it safe and sets up its targets.
- Melee (Lae’zel Fighter): Anchors the melee so enemies never reach your squishy blaster.
- A controller (Gale Wizard): Holds or hypnotizes the pack so your beams hit helpless, stationary targets (and land crits on the held ones).
- Rogue Melee (Astarion as Multiclass): Use Astarion Rogue dual-wield for utility and huge sneak attack criticals.
Recommended four-person party: Eldritch Blast Sorlock (you) + a frontliner + a controller + a flex support or second damage dealer.
Honour Mode Tips
- Hold Haste concentration carefully; you start Sorcerer with Constitution save proficiency precisely so a hit doesn’t drop Haste and stun you. Keep Constitution 14+ and consider the Amulet of Greater Health.
- Open on the most dangerous enemy; a full Quickened-plus-Haste volley can delete a priority target on turn one before it acts.
- Use Repelling Blast to peel enemies off your backline or knock them off ledges; your damage doubles as control.
- Keep a Sorcery Point buffer to convert into a spell slot for an emergency Haste or Counterspell.
- You never run out of Eldritch Blast, so on lean turns just blast; your damage floor is always high.
BG3 Eldritch Blast Build FAQ
1. Is the Eldritch Blast build good in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Yes; it’s one of the best ranged damage builds in the game and the most reliable, because your main damage is a cantrip that never runs out of resources. A Sorcerer 10 / Warlock 2 Sorlock fires multiple force beams a turn, each carrying double your Charisma.
2. Why is this a Warlock build if it’s mostly Sorcerer?
Eldritch Blast and Agonizing Blast are Warlock features, and this build is entirely about that cantrip, so it lives in the Warlock family as a special build. Mechanically, it’s a Sorcerer with a two-level Warlock dip for the blast; that’s why it’s an honorable mention rather than a ranked Patron.
3. How do I maximize Eldritch Blast damage?
Stack Charisma as high as possible (it counts twice per beam via Agonizing Blast and the Potent Robe), take Quickened Spell to fire the blast twice a turn, and add Haste for a third cast. Then lower your crit threshold (The Deadshot, Sarevok’s Helmet, Spell Sniper) and add the Craterflesh Gloves, so several of your many beams crit every turn for doubled dice and bonus Force damage.
4. What’s the best gear for an Eldritch Blast build?
The Potent Robe is best-in-slot (Charisma to every beam), then the crit core: Craterflesh Gloves (Force damage on every crit), The Deadshot and Sarevok’s Helmet (lower your crit threshold), Killer’s Sweetheart (a guaranteed critical blast after a kill), and the Risky Ring (Advantage so every beam lands and crits more often). Birthright pushes Charisma to 22+.
5. How many beams does Eldritch Blast get?
It scales with character level: one beam to start, two at level 5, three at level 11. With Quickened Spell and Haste, you can fire three full blasts (nine beams) in one turn at high level.
6. Is this build boring to play?
It’s one-note; you press Eldritch Blast most of the game. Some players love the reliability, others find it repetitive. If you want more variety with the same cantrip, the Sorlock build mixes in more Sorcerer spells; this build focuses on maximizing the blast.
