Latest Update: July 7, 2026 – Categories: Baldur’s Gate 3
Karlach is the ultimate face smasher in BG3 using the Berserker Barbarian subclass build; you gain everything in one: ranged damage, stun on demand, bonus action utility, and a huge HP pool. If you need a front-line brawler in your next BG3 campaign, then Karlach is the best build for you!

This build uses Karlach as a Berserker Barbarian multiclass setup, using Rogue Thief and Champion Fighter. The Rogue Thief combo gives you an extra bonus action per turn, critical for making Enraged Throws and entering Frenzy (Rage) on turn one. The Champion Fighter makes critical strikes more likely, plus you gain the Great Weapon Fighting Style and Action Surge.
The true strength of the Berserker is that it’s not as gear-dependent or complex as the Throw Barbarian. Meaning, if you miss a critical piece of gear in Act 1, your entire build isn’t dependent. Simply pick up any Greatsword, clothing, and medium armor and you can be an instant beat stick in BG3.
Below, we walk you through all the critical choices for a Karlach build in BG3, and give you options and choices that complement your individual playstyle.
This build guide is updated for Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8, Community Update #36, Version Number: 4.1.1.7209685.

Why Use the Karlach Build?

You want to use Karlach as a Berserker/Thief multiclass build because she gets more attacks per turn than almost anything else, with none of the gear hunting. You have an on-demand ranged stun, versatile gear options, and low complexity. All while retaining a unique fun factor from Barbarian, and contributing to combat every turn. Here’s what you can expect with the Karlach build:
- Bonus-action attacks, doubled. Frenzy gives you a bonus action Frenzied Strike every turn, and Thief’s Fast Hands gives you a second bonus action per turn. So you can Frenzied Strike twice on top of your regular attacks. If that weren’t enough, Enraged Throw and Great Weapon Master also provide another bonus action attack per turn!
- Four-plus attacks at level 5. Two attacks from Extra Attack plus two bonus-action strikes, before you even use Action Surge, Haste, or an Elixir of Bloodlust.
- Gear-light. No legendary weapon required. Any two-handed greatsword and clothing can carry you from Act 1 to the endgame.
- Nearly unstoppable. Rage halves physical damage, Mindless Rage makes you immune to Charm and Fear, and Reckless Attack keeps every swing at Advantage.

The biggest weakness to Karlach using Barbarian is mobility. However, you can counter this with multiple gear pieces granting extra mobility or the Misty Step spell. Also, consider using a Ranger in your party and pre-buffing with Longstrider.
How to Recruit & Respec Karlach
In Act 1, follow the Risen Road (the Paladins of Tyr send you to hunt a “devil”). Find Karlach cooling off in a river, talk to her rather than attacking, and she’ll join once you agree to help. Her early priority is finding Infernal Iron for her engine (see the romance section below).
Respec Karlach immediately with 100 gold at your camp via Withers. Her default ability score and skills will be wrong and need to be addressed.
Karlach’s Romance & Infernal Engine (Infernal Iron)

Karlach has a unique mechanic tied to her story and romance options. Her infernal engine runs dangerously hot, so she can’t touch anyone without burning them until it’s upgraded. The fix is Infernal Iron brought to Dammon, the tiefling smith:
- Act 1: find Infernal Iron (e.g. Blighted Village / Grymforge) and bring it to Dammon at the Emerald Grove for the first repair.
- Act 2: find Dammon again at Last Light Inn with more Infernal Iron. This upgrade is the point at which physical intimacy is unlocked in her romance.
- Act 3: Dammon relocates to Baldur’s Gate for the final work on her engine.
Her arc is bittersweet: the engine can’t be permanently made safe in Faerûn, which drives her Act 3 ending choices (no spoilers). Keep a piece or two of Infernal Iron earmarked for Dammon each act so you never miss a window. None of this affects her combat build.
Soul Coins Explained

Karlach has a unique interaction with Soul Coins. They are cursed infernal currency holding trapped souls. She can consume a Soul Coin to fuel her engine for a temporary combat buff: Weapon and unarmed attacks deal an additional 1d4 Fire damage when she is Raging or when her Hit Points drop 25% below.
Where to find them: Soul Coins are looted from devils, infernal chests, and Avernus-touched areas throughout the game. The catch is moral: you’re spending a trapped soul for power, which fits some playthroughs and not others. Mechanically, they’re a great “boss button”; hold a few for hard fights and use one alongside Frenzy for a burst turn.
Character Creation Selections – Karlach build

| Choice | Selection |
| Character | Karlach |
| Race | Zariel Tiefling (fixed) |
| Class | Barbarian → Rogue → Fighter |
| Subclass | Berserker (Barb 3) Thief (Rogue 4) Champion (Fighter 3) |
| Background | Outlander (fixed – grants Athletics & Survival) |
| Ability Scores | STR 16 DEX 14 CON 16 INT 8 WIS 10 CHA 10 |
| Skill Proficiencies | Perception, Intimidation |
Best Race for the Karlach Build
Karlach is locked to Zariel Tiefling and can’t be changed. You get Fire Resistance, Thaumaturgy, and Zariel’s bonus fire spells (Searing Smite, Branding Smite) as you level.
Best Ability Scores (point buy) for Karlach Build

Strength 16 is your damage stat and priority. Constitution 16 for HP and Unarmoured Defence, and Dexterity 14 to help with AC and help initiative. Dump INT, WIS, and CHA. Note that we recommend no ability score improvements for this build. That’s because you can increase your STR to 20, 23, or 27 with Elixirs or gear. This frees up two feats for Great Weapon Master and Savage Attacker. The downside is, for optimal damage, you’ll need to craft Elixirs. But the upside is well worth it, especially taking them before a boss battle.
Best Background
Companions keep their background, so Karlach stays Outlander (Athletics + Survival). You can’t change it.
Best Skills

Take Perception and Intimidation. Perception is wisdom-based and helps while exploring and discovering things in the environment. Intimidation is great if you use Karlach for dialogue and speaking.
Leveling Progression – Karlach build

| Level | Class | Selection | Why it Matters |
| 1 | Barbarian (1) | Rage, Unarmoured Defence | Rage halves physical damage and adds bonus damage |
| 2 | Barbarian (2) | Reckless Attack, Danger Sense | Advantage on your attacks (offsets Great Weapon Master’s penalty) |
| 3 | Barbarian (3) | Berserker: Frenzy (Frenzied Strike + Enraged Throw) | Core – a bonus-action attack every turn |
| 4 | Barbarian (4) | Feat: Great Weapon Master | +10 damage toggle; bonus-action attack on every kill or crit |
| 5 | Barbarian (5) | Extra Attack, Fast Movement | Two attacks per action – the damage doubler |
| 6 | Rogue (1) | Sneak Attack, Proficiency Acrobatics, Expertise Intimidation, Athletics | Bonus once-per-turn damage; strong skills |
| 7 | Rogue (2) | Cunning Action (bonus-action Dash/Disengage) | Reach melee and reposition freely |
| 8 | Rogue (3) | Thief: Fast Hands | The second bonus action – Frenzied Strike twice a turn |
| 9 | Rogue (4) | Savage Attacker | Best melee damage feat (or take STR +2) |
| 10 | Fighter (1) | Fighting Style: Great Weapon Fighting; Second Wind | Reroll low damage dice; heal as a bonus action |
| 11 | Fighter (2) | Action Surge | An entire extra action – burst on demand |
| 12 | Fighter (3) | Champion (crit on 19–20) | Passive crits that trigger even more Great Weapon Master attacks |
Here are the most critical choices for you to pick and why:
- Level 3: Frenzy Strike: Your first bonus-action attack every turn. This or use Enraged Throw for a stun at medium to close range.
- Level 4: Great Weapon Master: +10 damage per hit and a free bonus-action attack on kills and crits; Reckless Attack’s Advantage covers the accuracy cost.
- Level 5: Extra Attack: Major power spike with two attacks per one action. Use Bloodlust Elixir early in Act 1 to deal huge damage after a kill.
- Level 8: Thief Fast Hands: The second bonus action turns “one extra attack” into “two extra attacks” every round.
- Level 11: Action Surge: A whole extra action for nova turns and boss burst.
Best Skills, Frenzy & Class Features

Frenzy is your mechanic and engage that fuels Rage and extra bonus action utility. While Frenzied, you get two special bonus actions:
- Frenzied Strike – a bonus-action melee attack. Each use stacks Frenzied Strain (−1 to your attack rolls per stack), which you offset with Reckless Attack’s Advantage. (Note: in BG3 this stacks Strain).
- Enraged Throw – hurl an enemy or object as a bonus action, knocking the target Prone. A great way to control the battlefield or reach a distant caster.
Reckless Attack gives Advantage on your Strength attacks (enemies also get Advantage against you, but Rage’s damage resistance and your high HP cover it). Champion makes every 19–20 a crit, which, with Reckless Advantage, triggers Great Weapon Master’s bonus attack constantly.
Multiclass Options

Barbarian (Berserker) 5 / Rogue (Thief) 4 / Fighter 3 is the recommended meta melee loadout: Extra Attack, Frenzy’s bonus attack, Thief’s second bonus action, Action Surge, and passive crits, with two feats.
Simpler alternative Berserker 6 / Thief 4 / Fighter 2: drop Fighter’s subclass for one more Barbarian level to pick up Mindless Rage (Charm/Fear immunity). You keep Action Surge and both feats and lose only the Champion crits, a touch simpler with no subclass to manage.
Control alternative swap Champion for Battle Master (Fighter 3): take Trip Attack to knock enemies prone for the whole party. More control, slightly more to track. Withers respecs for 100 gold, so test whichever fits your playstyle.
Action Economy & Buff Stacking

This build is all about spending both bonus actions every turn:
- Turn one: Bonus action 1 → Rage/Frenzy. Action → attack (Reckless for Advantage). Bonus action 2 (Fast Hands) → Frenzied Strike or Enraged Throw to knock a target prone.
- Every turn after: Action → two attacks (Extra Attack). Bonus action 1 → Frenzied Strike. Bonus action 2 (Fast Hands) → a second Frenzied Strike, a Great Weapon Master proc attack (if you got a kill/crit), or Cunning Dash to reposition.
- Nova turn: add Action Surge for two more attacks, and if you kill something with an Elixir of Bloodlust active, you gain a whole extra action.
Keep attacking every turn to sustain Frenzy, and lean on Reckless Attack so Great Weapon Master and Frenzied Strain never hurt your accuracy.
Gear Progression Path – Karlach build
Barbarian’s want to use clothing rather than armor due to Unarmoured Defence. Each Act in BG3 has Barbarian-specific gear, so make sure to grab it. If you don’t have the specific recommended weapon, just make sure to use a two-handed weapon. Also, ranged weapons are used mainly for their bonuses, not to shoot arrows at targets.

Combat and Gameplay Strategy (Act 1-3)
Early Game Strategy (Act 1)
Rage (Frenzy) every fight and charge in with Reckless Attack for Advantage. Even before Extra Attack, Frenzied Strike gives you two swings a turn from level 3. Grab Bloodguzzler Garb from the Underdark and don’t forget the Infernal Iron for Dammon. Because you’re immune to Charm and Fear while raging, walk straight through enemy crowd control.
Mid-Game Strategy (Act 2)
With Extra Attack and Fast Hands online, your turns fill up with attacks: two main-hand swings plus two Frenzied Strikes. Target enemy casters first. Enraged Throw knocks a distant one prone so you can close and finish them with Advantage. Use Action Surge on the toughest fights.
Late Game Strategy (Act 3)
Equip Balduran’s Giantslayer (doubled Strength damage) and lead with Reckless Attack so every swing crit-fishes for Great Weapon Master’s bonus attacks. On a big turn: two attacks → Frenzied Strike → second Frenzied Strike → Action Surge for two more → free GWM attack on the kill, then chain it with an Elixir of Bloodlust and a Soul Coin. Save Enraged Throw to yeet dangerous enemies off ledges.
Potions, Elixirs, and Consumables
- Elixir of Hill/Cloud Giant Strength – this is your best option for raw damage IF you don’t have Gauntlets of Hill Giant Strength. You can use either to set your strength super high. If you have the Gauntlets, use Bloodlust as your Elixir of choice.
- Elixir of Bloodlust – extra action after a kill; on a build that kills every turn, it snowballs. Your default daily elixir.
- Potion of Speed – extra action and movement to reach and delete targets.
- Oil of Sharpness – flat damage on your greatsword before a big turn.
Illithid Powers and Synergies
Tadpole (Illithid) powers are optional. They won’t change your companion’s story but will change their appearance. If combat power is your priority, you should consume them or have your main character take them and use Black Hole to cluster enemies.
- Luck of the Far Realms: a guaranteed crit, which triggers Great Weapon Master’s bonus attack.
- Fly: reach the enemy backline without wasting movement.
- Favourable Beginnings: Advantage and a bonus on your opening swing.
- Cull the Weak: finishing damage that helps chain Killer’s Sweetheart and GWM procs.
Permanent Bonus Tracker
Funnel every permanent Strength source into Karlach. If you get Auntie Ethel’s Hair, drop Karlach’s Charisma ability score and increase STR to 17 at level 1.
| Permanent buff | Act | Location | Effect |
| Auntie Ethel’s Hair | 1 | Spare/deal with Auntie Ethel | +1 to a chosen stat, take Strength |
| Everlasting Vigour (Araj potion) | 2 | Araj Oblodra (let Astarion bite) | +2 Strength |
| Mirror of Loss | 3 | Gauntlet of Shar | +2 Strength after the ritual |
Party Synergies
Karlach is your front-line damage dealer. Use AOE, buffs, and ranged damage to complement her build:
- AOE Controller (Gale): Gale can stun, buff with Haste, and provide big AOE to supplement Karlach’s single-target burst.
- A support (Shadowheart): Healing and massive AOE Debuffs helps your melee fighter.
- A Thief (Astarion): Astarion helps with lock picking and disarming traps plus attacking in melee alongside Karlach.
Anything that grants Haste or extra actions multiplies her already-high attack count.
BG3 Karlach Build FAQ
1. Berserker or Giant for Karlach?
Berserker is the simpler, more gear-light melee build (bonus-action attacks, any greatsword works). Path of the Giant is the throw build with a higher ceiling but more gear dependence. Both are top-tier.
2. What’s the best multiclass for a Berserker?
Barbarian (Berserker) 5 / Rogue (Thief) 4 / Fighter 3. Thief’s Fast Hands for a second bonus action and Fighter’s Action Surge for burst.
3. Does Frenzy cause exhaustion in BG3?
No. Unlike tabletop, BG3 replaces the exhaustion penalty with Frenzied Strain (−1 attack per Frenzied Strike stack), which Reckless Attack’s Advantage offsets.
4. How do I fix Karlach’s engine / romance her?
Bring Infernal Iron to Dammon in Act 1 (Grove), Act 2 (Last Light Inn), and Act 3 (Baldur’s Gate). The Act 2 repair unlocks physical intimacy.
5. What do Soul Coins do for Karlach?
She can consume a Soul Coin to fuel her engine for a temporary damage buff. A great boss button, with a dark moral flavor.
6. Two-handed or dual-wield?
Two-handed greatsword or maul, to make full use of Great Weapon Master, it’s also simpler and needs less gear.
