Latest Update: July 6, 2026 – Categories: Baldur’s Gate 3
If you want raw melee damage, simplicity, and the most actions possible per turn, then this Ultimate BG3 Lae’zel build is for you! She comes equipped as a Fighter, ready to chunk bosses and enemies alike. While she might be an untrusting Githyanki, Lae’zel is one of the strongest companions in BG3, and with the right build, the most devastating to use.

Lae’zel is immediately effective in BG3 because of her class, subclass, and high Strength Greatsword playstyle. BG3 makes the Greatsword two-handed meta so effective due to gear, scaling, and elixirs. You can get massive damage numbers with little effort, making one of the most complex RPGs in history simple to play with Lae’zel.
This build focuses on the Battle Master subclass for the Fighter, without multiclassing or complex setups. At end game, max level of 12, you will attack three times per action! With gear, feats, and other tricks, you can even attack 12 times in one turn, each attack ripping for huge damage. The Fighter playstyle is simple and effective, and with the Battle Master, you get some extra utility. Let’s walk you through how to set up Lae’zel perfectly for BG3’s current end-game.
This build guide is updated for Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8, Community Update #36, Version Number: 4.1.1.7209685.

Why Use the Lae’zel Build?

The best reason to use Lae’zel as a Battle Master Fighter is its simple nearly endless attacks per turn. Zero fancy pre-buff, spells, metamagic, or fancy must-have gear. Simply level up as a Fighter and attack! Here’s what you can expect with Lae’zel Fighter build:
- The most attacks in BG3. Extra Attack, then Improved Extra Attack at level 11 (three swings per action), plus Action Surge for another full action. Stack Haste and an Elixir of Bloodlust, and she can throw double-digit attacks in a single turn.
- Great Weapon Master. A bonus-action attack on every kill or crit, plus a toggle for +10 damage at −5 accuracy, and that penalty vanishes against prone targets.
- Battle Master control. Trip Attack knocks a boss prone for a die, giving your whole party Advantage against it; Riposte punishes misses with free attacks. Superiority Dice recharge on a short rest, so she brings a full pool to every fight.
- No resource anxiety. She doesn’t need spell slots. When your casters are tapped out, Lae’zel is still deleting enemies.
Weaknesses: low mobility (mitigated by her free Githyanki Misty Step at level 5) and no ranged option beyond a backup bow. Lae’zel can also be vulnerable to spellcasting because of her lower Dexterity score. Without the Alert feat, you will go in the middle of the pack for turn order. The worst thing that can happen to you is getting stunned (Hold Person) before you can unload your attacks.
How to Recruit & Respec Lae’zel

You automatically meet Lae’zel in the nautiloid prologue, then you find her again in Act 1 at the Roadside Cliff / Ravaged Beach, caged by two tieflings. Convince them to release her or fight them, then talk to her to recruit. If you don’t free her from the cage, she can be found and recruited later on. You will have multiple ways to recruit her, but must recruit her by the Rosymorn Monatery trail that leads to the Githyanki Crech Y’llek by the end of Act 1.
Make sure to respect Lae’zel right away. Mainly to fix her ability scores (her defaults miss key thresholds) and lock in Battle Master. Respec at Withers (100 gold), whom you unlock by clearing the Dank Crypt near the starting beach.
Key Story: The Crèche & the Silver Sword

Lae’zel’s story arc runs through the Githyanki Crèche in Act 1 and the question of Queen Vlaakith versus Prince Orpheus later on. Two build-relevant notes:
- The zaith’isk warning: at the Crèche you can sit in the zaith’isk machine; it can permanently reduce a stat if things go wrong (though a high enough save can instead grant a bonus). Approach with caution, or skip it.
- The Silver Sword of the Astral Plane: Lae’zel’s iconic legendary greatsword comes from Kith’rak Voss; you can claim it in Act 3 by showing him the Orphic Hammer or by defeating him. When wielded by a Githyanki it adds psychic damage, grants Advantage on mental saving throws, psychic resistance, and immunity to Charm, a near-perfect Lae’zel weapon.
Her story choices (siding with Vlaakith or freeing Orpheus) are meaningful roleplay but don’t change her combat build.
Character Creation Selections – Lae’zel build

| Choice | Selection |
| Character | Lae’zel |
| Race | Githyanki (fixed) |
| Class | Fighter |
| Subclass | Battle Master |
| Background | Soldier (fixed, grants Athletics & Intimidation) |
| Ability Scores | STR 16 DEX 14 CON 16 INT 8 WIS 10 CHA 8 |
| Skill Proficiencies | Acrobatics, Perception |
Best Race for the Lae’zel Build

Lae’zel is locked to Githyanki and can’t be changed, and it’s a fantastic martial race. Martial Prodigy grants armour and weapon proficiencies, and Githyanki Psionics give her Jump (level 3) and Misty Step (level 5) for free, without spell slots. This solves the major issue with the Fighter: mobility. Several powerful items also have bonuses only Githyanki can trigger, like the Silver Sword of the Astral Plane (see below).
Best Ability Scores (point buy) for Lae’zel Build

Strength 16 is your damage stat, increase it first. Constitution 16 for HP and staying power on the front line, and Dexterity 14 for AC and initiative. Dump INT, WIS, and CHA. Take Strength to 20 with two feats. Keep in mind, Fighters gain four feats rather than three like other classes. Thus, you don’t have to rely on Auntie Ethel’s Hair permanent bonus to boost your STR to 20. You can also use Elixirs or Hill Giant Gloves to increase strength beyond level 20. However, the easiest is to increase STR by 4 via two feats.
Best Background
Companions keep their background, so Lae’zel stays Soldier (Athletics + Intimidation). You can’t change it.
Best Skills

Take Acrobatics to help with mobility, and Perception to help with exploration and detecting hidden items.
Leveling Progression – Lae’zel build

| Level | Class | Selection | Why it Matters |
| 1 | Fighter (1) | Fighting Style: Great Weapon Fighting; Second Wind | Reroll 1s and 2s on damage dice; heal as a bonus action |
| 2 | Fighter (2) | Action Surge | An entire extra action, a huge burst on demand |
| 3 | Fighter (3) | Battle Master: 4 Superiority Dice; maneuvers (Disarming, Riposte, Precision Attack) | Disarm = easy mode boss fights, Riposte = return damage, Precision adds accuracy passively |
| 4 | Fighter (4) | Feat: Great Weapon Master | Bonus-action attack on kill/crit; +10 damage toggle |
| 5 | Fighter (5) | Extra Attack (+ Githyanki Misty Step) | Two attacks per action, plus free teleport mobility |
| 6 | Fighter (6) | Feat: Ability Improvement (+2 STR → 18) | More damage and accuracy |
| 7 | Fighter (7) | 2 more maneuvers (Trip Attack, Sweeping Attack) | Stun on demand, and AOE |
| 8 | Fighter (8) | Feat: Ability Improvement (+2 STR → 20) | Cap Strength |
| 9 | Fighter (9) | Indomitable (reroll a failed save) | Survive Honour Mode save-or-die effects |
| 10 | Fighter (10) | 2 more maneuvers + extra Superiority Die Goading Attack, Menacing Attack | A deeper toolbox and more dice |
| 11 | Fighter (11) | Improved Extra Attack (three attacks per action) | The biggest single damage jump in the game |
| 12 | Fighter (12) | Savage Attacker | Best increase damage feat for Melee |
Here are the most critical choices for you to pick and why:
- Level 3 – Battle Master + Disarming Attack: One Superiority Die makes a target drop their weapon. If you are facing weapon-based melee damage dealers like Githyanki in the Creche, this completely negates them. Disarm, pick up their weapon, and they deal nearly zero damage.
- Level 4 – Great Weapon Master: Leave the toggle on; against prone targets (from Trip Attack) the −5 accuracy penalty is irrelevant, so you get +10 damage for free.
- Level 11 – Improved Extra Attack: Three attacks per action is the single largest damage jump in her progression; don’t delay it with an early multiclass.
- Feats – you can use Hill Giant Strength Gauntlets or Cloud Giant Strength Elixir in Act 3. If you do, the two Strength Feats aren’t worth it. In that case, you can take something else like Alert or increase CON instead of STR.
Best Maneuvers, Feats & Class Features

Maneuvers (spend your dice, they recharge on a short rest):
- Trip Attack: prone gives the whole party Advantage and lets Great Weapon Master swing freely.
- Riposte: a free reaction attack whenever an enemy misses her.
- Precision Attack: turn a near-miss into a hit on an important target.
- Menacing / Disarming Attack: Fear a threat or disarm a dangerous weapon.
- Skip Commander’s Strike (wastes your action) and Feinting Attack (Trip Attack does it better).
Trip Attack to knock the target prone, then attack it with Great-Weapon-Master swings at Advantage and +10 damage each. Against a boss, that’s how you burst it down before it gets going.
Multiclass Options
Keep Lae’zel pure Fighter 12. Improved Extra Attack at level 11 (three attacks per action) is the single biggest jump in her damage, and any multiclass delays it, costing more across Act 3 than a dip recovers.
If you insist on a dip, one level of Barbarian (Rage for damage resistance) or Rogue (Sneak Attack, if you can reliably get Advantage) is the most you’d want to spend, and only after level 11. For a companion running alongside your main character, pure Fighter is the cleanest and strongest choice.
Action Economy & Buff Stacking

Before combat, drink an Elixir of Bloodlust (or Giant STR) and apply Oil of Sharpness to your greatsword for a flat damage boost.
A big turn looks like:
- Action → three attacks (Improved Extra Attack), opening with Trip Attack to knock the target prone.
- Action Surge → three more attacks at Advantage (target’s prone).
- Bonus Action → the free Great Weapon Master attack after a kill/crit.
- If Hasted (spell or Potion of Speed) → three more attacks.
- Kill with Bloodlust → This Elixir gives you three more attacks if one was killed during your turn.
- Martial Exertion Gloves → item that gives you yet another attack and doubles movement speed.
Gear Progression Path – Lae’zel build
As a Fighter, Lae’zel wears heavy armour and can use any weapon, so grab the best two-handed greatswords and the highest AC armour you can. Equip a ranged weapon merely for the buffs, not to use. Also, make sure to get the Resonance Stone at the end of Act 2, it can help with the Silver Sword Githyanki-specific weapon.

Combat and Gameplay Strategy (Act 1-3)
Early Game Strategy (Act 1)
Grab the Everburn Blade in the prologue, disarm Commander Zhalk with Shadowheart’s Command. Equip a heavy crossbow and use ranged attacks when you cannot close the distance. Main power spike is at level 5 with Extra Attack and Misty Step. Until then, you feel somewhat weak. Keep potions on you and use Second Wind for self-healing. Elixirs and Oil weapon coatings are a good way to increase damage until you reach level 5.
Mid-Game Strategy (Act 2)
Lead with Trip Attack to knock priority targets prone, then swing with Great Weapon Master’s +10 toggle at Advantage. The Risky Ring gives permanent Advantage so GWM’s accuracy penalty stops mattering entirely. Spend Superiority Dice freely; they come back on a short rest.
Late Game Strategy (Act 3)
With three attacks per action, Action Surge, and a legendary greatsword, Lae’zel is your single-target executioner. Open on a boss with Trip Attack (or disarm if weapon focused) → full attacks → Action Surge → free GWM attack, and if you land a kill with a Bloodlust Elixir active, keep going. Save Indomitable to shrug off Honour Mode save-or-die effects.
Potions, Elixirs, and Consumables
The most important Elixir is either using the Strength of Bloodlust. It’s easiest to use Bloodlust and get extra action than respecing ability scores and always running a Cloud Giant Strength. However, STR Elixirs are the best for increasing damage per attack Elixir.
Elixirs

Elixir of Hill Giant / Cloud Giant Strength: Sets Strength to 21 (Hill Giant) or 27 (Cloud Giant) until a Long Rest. This is the most efficient way to maximize damage for a Great Weapon Master. By using elixirs, you can leave your natural Strength at 8 and put all your points into Constitution (for HP) and Dexterity (for Initiative). Drink immediately after every Long Rest. This ensures every one of your maneuvers and attacks hits with maximum force.
Elixir of Bloodlust: Once per turn when you kill a foe, you gain 5 temporary HP and an additional action. For a Level 11 Fighter, one “additional action” equals three extra attacks. This elixir effectively turns a single kill into a total of 9–12 attacks per turn when combined with Action Surge. Drink this before encounters with multiple enemies. Once you down a weak “trash” mob, use the extra action to unleash a full 3-attack volley on the boss.
Elixir of the Colossus: Increases your size, gives Advantage on Strength checks, and adds 1d4 damage to weapon attacks. This stacks with the Giant’s Rage size increase, turning you into a massive threat on the battlefield. It is a great alternative if you are already at your Strength cap.
Elixir of Vigilance: Grants a +5 bonus to Initiative and prevents you from being Surprised. Fighters often suffer from low Initiative. In the 2026 meta, the best defense is a good offense, killing the enemy before they move. This elixir ensures you act first to Disarm or Trip high-threat targets.
Potions

Potion of Speed: Grants an extra Action, +2 AC, Advantage on DEX Saves, and double movement speed for 3 turns. It provides a full second (or third) action. For a Battle Master, this is the difference between a good turn and a turn that deletes a dragon. Save this for boss fights. Drink it at the start of your turn to maximize the extra 3 attacks.
Potion of Flying: Grants a flying speed of 18m for one 10 turns. Melee Fighters are easily countered by verticality or difficult terrain. Flying allows you to bypass obstacles and reach back-line casters instantly without wasting your action on Dashing.
Weapon Coatings & Oils

Oil of Accuracy: Coats your weapon with a +2 bonus to Attack Rolls. This is essential to offset the -5 penalty from the Great Weapon Master feat. It ensures your high-damage swings actually connect. Apply this to your Greatsword or Halberd before entering a fight where enemies have high Armor Class (AC).
Drow Poison: Chance to inflict Sleep on the target. Attacks against sleeping targets are guaranteed Critical Hits. Apply this to your weapon, use a Maneuver (like Trip Attack) to put an enemy down, and let the poison do the rest.
Oil of Diminution: Great for Battle Masters focusing on crowd control. Reduces the target’s size and gives them Disadvantage on Strength checks and Saves. Use this to ensure your Pushing Attack or Disarming Attack succeeds against massive bosses who would normally resist your maneuvers.
Illithid Powers and Synergies
Tadpole (Illithid) powers are optional. They won’t change your companion’s story but will change their appearance. If combat power is your priority, you should consume them or have your main character take them and use Black Hole to cluster enemies.
- Luck of the Far Realms: a guaranteed critical, which with Great Weapon Master grants a bonus attack too.
- Fly / Githyanki Misty Step: reach the backline and priority targets.
- Favourable Beginnings: Advantage on your opening swing.
- Cull the Weak: free finishing damage on wounded enemies.
Permanent Bonus Tracker
Funnel every permanent Strength source into Lae’zel:
| Permanent buff | Act | Location | Effect |
| Auntie Ethel’s Hair | 1 | Spare/deal with Auntie Ethel | +1 to a chosen stat, take Strength |
| Mirror of Loss | 2 | Gauntlet of Shar | +2 Strength after the ritual |
| Gauntlets of Giant Strength | 3 | Act 3 | Sets Strength to 23 (frees stat points) |
Party Synergies
Lae’zel is your front-line dealer. She wants setup and protection to swing freely:
- AOE Controller (Gale): Gale can stun, buff with Haste, and provide big AOE to supplement Lae’zel’s single-target burst.
- A support (Shadowheart): Bless boosts her accuracy so Great Weapon Master’s penalty never bites.
- A Thief (Astarion): Astarion helps with lock picking and disarming traps plus attacking in melee alongside Lae’zel.
The core synergy: anything that grants her Advantage or Haste turns her already-high attack count into a boss-deleting turn.
BG3 Lae’zel Build FAQ
1. What’s the best subclass for Lae’zel?
Battle Master, because of its versatile maneuvers, adds control (Trip Attack, Riposte) on top of pure damage, and Superiority Dice recharge on a short rest, so she brings a full pool to every fight.
2. Battle Master, Champion, or Eldritch Knight?
Battle Master for control and consistency (this build). Champion is simpler with more crits; Eldritch Knight is a Patch-8-era option via a Hexblade dip, but it completely changes the simplistic nature of the Fighter.
3. Should I respec Lae’zel?
Yes, to fix her ability scores (she misses key thresholds) and lock in Battle Master.
4. What are the best feats for Lae’zel?
Great Weapon Master, then Ability Improvement to max Strength, then Savage Attacker for max damage
5. What’s the best weapon for Lae’zel?
The Everburn Blade in Act 1, then Balduran’s Giantslayer (raw damage) or the Silver Sword of the Astral Plane (Githyanki-only bonuses) in Act 3.
6. Should I sit in the zaith’isk at the Crèche?
No, because it can permanently reduce a stat on a failure. Skip it unless you’re confident in the save.
