Latest Update: August 16, 2026 – Categories: Baldur’s Gate 3, BG3 Cleric Builds
If you want the best healer build in Baldur’s Gate 3, look no further than the Life Domain Cleric: in this guide, we cover everything you need to know about making the ultimate healer Cleric in BG3.

The Life Domain Cleric is one of the easiest and most sought-after subclasses and playstyles in all of BG3. You gain heavy armor proficiency at level 1, a massive AOE healing spell with your Channel Divinity, and great spell selection. Whether it’s buffs, debuffs, or something in between, the Life Cleric excels at BG3’s combat.
BG3 has specific gear sets that trigger extra effects when you heal yourself or allies. This build aims to optimize that gameplay loop. Pre-buff, heal, debuff, and save your team all while triggering extra effects for your party. This guide covers a pure Life Domain Cleric 12 built for Honour Mode. It’s the most beginner-friendly build on the site and, with the right five items, quietly one of the strongest.
This build guide is updated for Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8, Community Update #36, Version Number: 4.1.1.7209685.

Why Use the Life Domain Cleric Build?

No other build or subclass can provide easy-mode healing and buffs like the Life Cleric. With a huge AOE (9 meters), everyone is healed and this spell scales with level, making it relevant the entire game. Plus, you still have good offensive firepower with Guiding Bolt early and Flame Strike late. Here’s what you can expect with a Life Cleric build in BG3:
- Preserve Life is a second life for your whole party. This Channel Divinity heals everyone within 9m for three times your Cleric level; 33 HP each at level 11, no spell slot spent. One press after a near-wipe saves a run.
- Your healing sustains itself. Blessed Healer returns 2 + spell level HP to you every time you heal an ally, so keeping the party up also keeps you up for free.
- Heavy armor from level 1. No multiclass dip required. With Adamantine Splint Armour and a shield, you sit around 22 AC while still casting at full strength; you’re a secondary tank who happens to be the healer.
- Every heal is a buff delivery. This is the part that separates a good Life Cleric from a great one, and it gets its own section below.
This Cleric subclass isn’t going to shine on damage. Moreover, it’s mobility and lower initiative is its biggest weaknesses. We solve this by using the Alert Feat and gear to increase initiative. Plus, you can use other gear sets to gain Misty Step spell or have a Ranger cast Longstrider. While every build has drawbacks, the Life Clerics are few and far between and if you mess up something on character creation or in a turn, it’s forgiving.
Life Domain Cleric Build Character Creation

| Choice | Selection |
| Class | Cleric |
| Subclass | Life Domain |
| Best Race | Wood Elf |
| Background | Acolyte |
| Ability Scores | STR 8 DEX 14 CON 16 INT 8 WIS 17 CHA 10 |
| Skill Proficiencies | Perception, Insight, Religion |
| Deity | Any; cosmetic, with occasional dialogue flavor |
Best Race for the Life Domain Cleric Build
Wood Elf is the strongest pick because extra movement speed lets you reach a downed ally and still act, Fey Ancestry gives Advantage against being Charmed, and Darkvision is always useful. The extra 1.5 meters offsets your biggest weakness early. The Wood Half-Elf has relatively the same bonuses, and you still gain extra movement.
Alternatives: Gold Dwarf for Dwarven Toughness (+1 HP per level, which stacks nicely with a frontline healer), or Wood Half-Elf if you want the extra skill proficiency.
Best Ability Scores (point buy) for Life Domain Cleric Build

The most important ability score is Wisdom, the Cleric’s primary casting stat in D&D 5e, which drives your spell save DC, your healing, and your attack rolls. Setting your wisdom score to an odd number, 17, means you can reach 18 after Auntie Ethel’s permanent bonus. If you don’t want to do this, set it to 16 and increase Intelligence by two.
Constitution 16 is the second priority, because Bless and Spirit Guardians are concentration spells you’ll hold through incoming damage, and Constitution is crucial for maintaining concentration on powerful spells. Dexterity 14 covers initiative. Dump Strength to 8 as you are only using it for carrying capacity and nothing more; outside BG3, Life Clerics often want at least 14 Strength for Heavy Armor, but BG3 does not require it.
Best Background

Folk Hero is the best background choice because it provides two Wisdom-based skills, Animal Handling and Survival.
Best Skills

Always increase Wisdom-based skills since it’s your main attribute. Insight and Medicine make the best choice with a Folk Hero background giving you a breadth of Wisdom skills proficiency.
Leveling Progression – Life Domain Cleric Build

Domain spells are granted free and are always prepared; they never count against your prepared-spell limit. The right-hand column is what you actually choose as the cleric class levels, including each new spell choice at key breakpoints.
| Lvl | Features | Domain spells (free) | Cantrip / Prepared picks |
| 1 | Life Domain: Disciple of Life; heavy armor proficiency | Bless, Cure Wounds | Cantrips: Guidance, Sacred Flame, Light; Spells: Healing Word, Guiding Bolt, Command, Sanctuary |
| 2 | Channel Divinity: Preserve Life; Turn Undead | – | Spell: Shield of Faith |
| 3 | Level 2 spells | Lesser Restoration, Aid | Drop Shield of Faith, take Spiritual Weapon, Hold Person |
| 4 | Feat: Ability Improvement (+2 WIS, 18 to 20) Requires Auntie Ethel’s Hair | – | Cantrip: Resistance; Spell: Enhance Ability |
| 5 | Destroy Undead; level 3 spells | Beacon of Hope, Revivify | Spells: Spirit Guardians, Mass Healing Word |
| 6 | Blessed Healer: healing others heals you | – | Spell: Glyph of Warding |
| 7 | Level 4 spells | Death Ward, Guardian of Faith | Spell: Freedom of Movement |
| 8 | Feat: War Caster; Divine Strike: Radiant (1d8) | – | Spell: Banishment |
| 9 | Level 5 spells | Greater Restoration, Mass Cure Wounds | Spell: Flame Strike |
| 10 | Divine Intervention | – | Cantrip: Thaumaturgy; Spell: Animate Dead |
| 11 | Level 6 spells | – | Drop Animate Dead, take Heal, Heroes’ Feast |
| 12 | Feat: Alert | – | Spell: Planar Ally |
Here are the most critical choices for you to pick and why:
- Level 2: Preserve Life. Your emergency button, and the reason Life Cleric is rated so highly for Honour Mode. It costs no spell slot and scales with your Cleric level forever. This is a Channeled Divinity, and replenishes on short rest.
- Level 4: Ability Improvement. With Auntie Ethel’s Hair already taking Wisdom to 18, this +2 caps your casting stat at 20 in a single feat, which is what frees level 12 for Alert.
- Level 6: Blessed Healer. From here, healing your party is also healing yourself, which means fewer wasted turns. That makes you even steadier inside an adventuring party.
- Level 8: War Caster. Taken the level before Spirit Guardians so concentration protection is online the moment you need it. Bless is also concentration, and you want it up every fight.
- Level 10: Divine Intervention. A major class feature that gives Life Clerics a powerful once-per-campaign option.
- Level 11: Heal. A 70+ HP single-target heal that pulls anyone back from the brink of a bad Act 3 boss round.
- Level 12: Alert. +5 initiative solves the Cleric’s biggest structural weakness. Getting Bless and Spirit Guardians up before the enemy acts is worth more on a support build than a marginal stat point, and your Wisdom is already capped.
Best Spells, Cantrips & Channel Divinity

Cantrips: Guidance is the best utility cantrip in the game; use it constantly outside combat. Sacred Flame is your ranged filler, and it deals radiant damage, which pairs with the Callous Glow Ring. Light looks like filler but makes a target Illuminated, switching on that ring’s bonus damage, so cast it on an enemy. Resistance rounds out the set, and the subclass’s divine power is what makes its healing and support package so efficient.
Spells to prepare by tier (domain spells listed separately, since they’re free):
- Level 1; Domain: Bless, Cure Wounds. Prepared: Healing Word, Guiding Bolt, Command, Shield of Faith
- Level 2; Domain: Lesser Restoration, Spiritual Weapon. Prepared: Aid, Hold Person, Prayer of Healing (10-minute cast, so mainly for use outside combat)
- Level 3; Domain: Beacon of Hope, Revivify. Prepared: Spirit Guardians, Mass Healing Word, Warding Bond
- Level 4; Domain: Death Ward, Guardian of Faith. Prepared: Freedom of Movement, Banishment
- Level 5; Domain: Greater Restoration, Mass Cure Wounds. Prepared: Flame Strike
- Level 6; Prepared: Heal, Heroes’ Feast, Planar Ally
Top Spells: Bless (up to three allies get +1d4 to attack rolls and saves; cast it before every fight, it lasts ten turns), Mass Healing Word (a bonus-action heal on your entire party that triggers every heal-proc item you own at once), and Spirit Guardians (your only real damage, and it’s substantial, plus your main area-control spell). Life Clerics should prioritize prevention and control, not just raw healing. Remember you can only have Bless or Spirit Guardians active at once, and these concentration spells often define the flow of an encounter, so pick one.
Channel Divinity: Preserve Life. Heals every ally within 9m for 3 × your Cleric level, split as needed, with no spell slot spent. Note that because it isn’t technically a spell, Disciple of Life adds only its flat +2 rather than scaling. It cannot revive downed characters; it heals the living, so keep Revivify prepared alongside it.
Turn Undead and Destroy Undead matter more than they look. Act 2 is wall-to-wall undead, and Destroy Undead outright kills the weaker ones from level 5.
Life Cleric Multiclass Options
Cleric 12. Life Domain already grants heavy armor at level 1, so the usual Fighter dip buys you almost nothing, and the level-11 spells (Heal, Heroes’ Feast) plus the level-12 feat are both worth more than a dip.
Life Cleric 11 / Fighter 1: trades your final feat for Second Wind, a fighting style, and Constitution save proficiency only if you take Fighter at character level 1. Saving throw proficiencies come exclusively from your starting class and can never be added later, so if you want the Constitution saves, Fighter has to be your level 1 and every Cleric milestone lands one level later.
Life Cleric 1 as a dip for other builds; a single Life level on a Paladin or Bard grants heavy armor and Disciple of Life. It’s a popular dip precisely because level 1 is where all the value sits. The one that makes sense is 1 level Storm Sorcery to gain Fly after casting a spell. However, you lose out on Alert feat and more level 6 spell choices.
Withers respecs for 100 gold, so it’s cheap to test.
Action Economy & Buff Stacking

Before combat begins, pre-buff with Heroes’ Feast, Aid (a permanent max-HP increase for the party until long rest; upcast it for more), then Bless on your three most attack-dependent allies. Both should be up before you trigger any fight you can see coming. You can also use Freedom of Movement, Death Ward, and Longstrider (from a Ranger). While it’s annoying and uses spell slots, this makes a massive difference before a battle.
Each turn:
- Action → Flame Strike or Guiding Bolt (if no one needs healing) for offensive firepower. If healing is needed, Mass Cure Wounds or Preserve Life Channel Divinity.
- Bonus Action – Spiritual Weapon for a free summon if no one needs healing. Otherwise, Healing Word or Mass Healing Word.
- Channel Divinity → Preserve Life when two or more allies are hurt.
- Reaction → keep it open; War Caster helps with maintaining concentration while you stay active near the front, and lets you cast a reaction spell if needed.
Buff, damage, and heal only when needed. Heal with your bonus action, damage with your action to maximize action economy. Healing Word plus the heal-trigger gear below does more for the party than a bigger single heal ever will, since those healing spells also apply buffs that keep allies fighting instead of only restoring HP.
Gear Progression Path – Life Domain Cleric build
Priority one is assembling the heal-trigger set mentioned below. Most of it is available in Act 1, which is unusually early for a build-defining package. Two threads run through the later acts: a set of initiative items (Bow of Awareness, Sentinel Shield, Hellrider’s Longbow) to complement the Alert feat, and a Radiating Orb engine (Coruscation Ring plus the permanent light from The Blood of Lathander) that turns your radiant damage into a stacking enemy debuff.

| Unique | Amulet of the Devout | +1 spell save DC and restores a Channel Divinity charge | Sorcerous Sundries, Lower City |
Note: the Amulet of Greater Health sets Constitution to 23, which is a big boost for a concentration-based support. It competes for the necklace slot with the Amulet of the Devout (extra Preserve Life). Since capping Constitution protects every concentration spell you cast, and Aid or Heroes’ Feast also increase hit point maximum for better endgame survivability, drop Wapira’s Crown once you have it, since Blessed Healer already covers self-healing.
Life Cleric Healing Explained

This is what makes the Life Domain special. Five items in the game fire a powerful effect whenever you heal a creature. Individually, they’re minor. Stacked on a class that heals constantly and can heal the whole party at once with a bonus action, they compound into the strongest support package in the game.
The five pieces:
- The Whispering Promise (ring); healed targets gain Bless (+1d4 to attack rolls and saves)
- Hellrider’s Pride (gloves); healed targets gain Blade Ward (resistance to physical damage)
- Boots of Aid and Comfort; healed targets gain temporary hit points
- Ring of Salving; increases the healing itself
- Wapira’s Crown (helm); heals you whenever you heal someone else
Cast Mass Healing Word as a bonus action, costing only a bonus action and leaving your action free. Every ally in range is healed, which means every ally simultaneously receives Bless, Blade Ward, and temporary hit points, and you heal yourself twice over (Wapira’s Crown plus Blessed Healer). One bonus action, five effects, four characters.
That single cast is worth more than most classes’ entire turn. It’s also why Mass Healing Word is a higher priority pickup than any big single-target heal, and why you should be casting it even when nobody is badly hurt; the heal is almost incidental to the buffs it delivers and the way they keep allies fighting through incoming damage.
Potions, Elixirs, and Consumables

Only one elixir can be active at a time, so this is a real choice rather than a checklist.
- Elixir of Vigilance; +5 initiative and no Surprise, so you get Bless and Spirit Guardians up before anything moves. The default pick for a support build.
- Superior Elixir of Arcane Cultivation; an extra level-3 spell slot, meaning one more Spirit Guardians or Mass Healing Word for the day.
- Elixir of Peerless Focus; immunity to losing concentration, which effectively replaces War Caster on days you expect a long boss fight.
- Always carry: Scrolls of Revivify (Preserve Life can’t revive), plus healing potions to throw as a bonus action at range.
Illithid Powers and Synergies
- Black Hole; pulls a pack into one cluster, straight into Spirit Guardians. The best offensive power for any Cleric.
- Favourable Beginnings; Advantage and a bonus on your opening Bless or Guiding Bolt.
- Fly; reach a downed ally across the battlefield in a single turn, which occasionally saves a run outright.
- Cull the Weak; free finishing damage on the enemies your aura has already ground down.
Permanent Bonus Tracker
Funnel every permanent Wisdom source into this build:
| Permanent buff | Act | Location | Effect |
| Auntie Ethel’s Hair | 1 | Spare or deal with Auntie Ethel | +1 to a chosen stat; take Wisdom |
| Mirror of Loss | 3 | Gauntlet of Shar | +2 Wisdom after the ritual |
Start Wisdom 17, take Auntie Ethel’s Hair in Act 1 for 18, then the level-8 Ability Improvement caps you at 20. If you miss Ethel, the Mirror of Loss (+2) reaches 20 the same way. Either path hits the cap without spending your level-12 feat, which is reserved for Alert.
Party Synergies
The Life Cleric is a support build, so don’t bring another similar playstyle to your team. Here’s what you should select:
- Attack-roll-heavy martials (Lae’zel Fighter): Bless and the Whispering Promise’s second Bless stack into a large accuracy swing, and Hellrider’s Pride keeps them alive on the front line. This is your best pairing.
- A controller (Gale Wizard): clusters enemies into Spirit Guardians while you handle sustain.
- Range Rogue (Astarion as Multiclass): Use Astarion Rogue and Ranger multiclass to get sustained DPS and utility.
Avoid: bringing a second healer or support build.
Life Domain Cleric Subclass Combat Tips
The Life cleric domain is built around a simple principle that most players underestimate: healing is not just restoration, it’s also about buff delivery. Every time you heal allies with the right gear equipped, you are simultaneously applying Bless to their next attack roll, granting Blade Ward so incoming weapon attacks deal half damage, and stacking temporary additional hit points on top of whatever HP they recover.
The Whispering Promise and Hellrider’s Pride are the two items that make this loop work, and once both are equipped, you should be casting Mass Healing Word almost every turn regardless of whether your party actually needs the HP, because the spell effects those items trigger are worth more than the healing itself. One bonus action gives every nearby ally Bless and Blade Ward simultaneously, which is a better offensive and defensive swing than most classes can produce with their full action.
Preserve Life is your emergency button and the reason a Life Cleric makes any Honour Mode run significantly safer than running without one. It heals every living creature within 9 meters for three times your Cleric level with no spell slot spent, and it refreshes on a short rest. Where Preserve Life shines is preventing death saving throws from becoming a problem in the first place. When two or more party members are low simultaneously, one Preserve Life resets the entire situation before anyone hits zero, which is the difference between a recoverable turn and a cascading wipe. Do not save it for the perfect moment: Channel Divinity replenishes quickly enough that spending it on a near-wipe and then immediately refreshing on the next short rest is always the correct call.
Spirit Guardians is your primary damage tool and area control spell simultaneously, and knowing when to swap from Bless to Spirit Guardians is the most important tactical decision you make each fight. Both are concentration spells, so you can only hold one at a time, and the choice depends on enemy density and positioning. Bless is the correct pick when your martials are fighting spread-out enemies where the accuracy bonus compounds across many independent attack rolls each turn. Spirit Guardians is the correct pick when enemies are clustering together, since its aura damages everything within range at the start of their turn and can impose disadvantage on Constitution saving throws for affected creatures trying to maintain their own concentration spells. War Caster exists on this build specifically to protect whichever one you are holding, because losing concentration mid-fight forces a recast that costs your full action and a spell slot.
Your proficiency bonus scales into one of the build’s best advantages over a full campaign. Disciple of Life adds 2 plus the spell’s level to every healing spell you cast on one target, which means even a first-level Healing Word is healing for more than its base roll once your proficiency bonus is factored in. This scaling is also why upcasting healing spells is more efficient on a Life Cleric than on any other subclass: the flat bonus applies regardless of the slot used, so a second-level Healing Word heals for meaningfully more than a Fighter’s Second Wind while still costing only a bonus action. Blessed Healer then returns HP to you personally every time you heal an ally, which means the act of keeping your party healthy also keeps you healthy without spending any additional resources. In longer fights, this self-sustain from target’s wounds effectively means you never need to spend your action healing yourself.
The one area where Life Clerics require deliberate positioning is initiative. If the enemy acts before you, they damage your party before Bless is up, which means your martials are rolling unblessed attack rolls for the first round and potentially making death saving throws before Preserve Life can intervene. Alert at level 12 and the initiative gear chain across all three acts, Bow of Awareness in Act 1, Sentinel Shield in Act 2, and Hellrider’s Longbow in Act 3, exist entirely to solve this problem. An Elixir of Vigilance is the consumable answer when a specific fight demands it. Unlike a death cleric who can afford to let the enemy move first because they have heavy burst damage to recover the situation, the Life Cleric’s value is preventative: gain advantage of going first by any means available, apply Bless and Heroes’ Feast buffs before combat triggers where possible, cast Aid before the fight to make targets gain additional hit points above their natural maximum, and use area spells like Flame Strike when enemies cluster rather than spending an action on a single ability check or magical effect that only affects one target. Your job is to make every fight shorter and safer for the whole party, and that job starts before the first roll.
Life Domain Cleric Build FAQ
1. Is the Life Cleric good in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Yes, it’s the most forgiving subclass in the game and arguably the best choice for a first Honour Mode run. Preserve Life covers mistakes, Blessed Healer makes you self-sustaining, and heavy armor from level 1 means you’re durable without a multiclass dip.
2. Is Life Domain better than Light Domain?
Light has a far higher damage ceiling and the Radiating Orb debuff engine; Life has better sustain, heavy armor, and a party-wide emergency heal. For a first playthrough or a run you don’t want to lose, Life is the safer pick.
3. Do I need Strength for heavy armor?
No. Heavy armor in Baldur’s Gate 3 has no Strength requirement, so you can dump Strength to 8 and still wear Adamantine Splint Armour at full AC.
4. Should I multiclass a Life Cleric?
No; stay pure 12. Life Domain already grants heavy armor at level 1, which is the main reason other Clerics dip, and levels 11 and 12 give you Heal, Heroes’ Feast, and a third feat.
5. What are the best feats for a Life Cleric?
War Caster at level 8 to protect concentration on Bless and Spirit Guardians, an Ability Improvement at level 4 to cap Wisdom at 20 (helped by Auntie Ethel’s Hair getting you to 18 first), and Alert at level 12 to fix the Cleric’s low initiative so your buffs land before the enemy moves.
6. What’s the best gear for a Life Cleric?
The five heal-trigger items: Wapira’s Crown, Hellrider’s Pride, Boots of Aid and Comfort, The Whispering Promise, and Ring of Salving. Most are available in Act 1, and together they turn a single Mass Healing Word into a party-wide buff.
7. Can Preserve Life revive a downed ally?
No. It heals living creatures within 9m but cannot bring anyone back from downed; keep Revivify prepared for that.
