Latest Update: July 16, 2026 – Categories: Baldur’s Gate 3
Recruited in Act 3, Minsc becomes a powerful Ranger build that can immediately blast enemies on turn one. Our ultimate build guide walks you through how to recruit, progress, and dominate with Minsc in BG3.

Minsc is the last companion you recruit in BG3, so don’t expect to pick him up until Act 3. He starts out as a Ranger with the Hunter subclass. This build will respec Minsc for the meta subclass Gloom Stalker with a multiclass combo designed for turn-one kills.
Act 3 makes the Ranger build incredibly powerful with weapons like the Gontr Mael bow, Helm of Balduran, and Armor of Agility. Let’s get started walking you through the build at a glance, recruitment, level progression, and gear.
This build guide is updated for Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8, Community Update #36, Version Number: 4.1.1.7209685.

Why Use the Minsc Build?

Minsc is a powerful human Ranger who gains an extra companion named Boo. Archer builds do exceptionally well in BG3, especially the Gloom Stalker multiclass combo, giving you some of the best turn-one damage in BG3. He’s a perfect late-game fit if you need some range firepower and an interesting character for your party. Below is what you can expect from Minsc in BG3:
- The best turn-one burst in the game. Dread Ambusher grants an extra attack and +3 initiative on the first round; stack Extra Attack and Action Surge and you fire five arrows before most bosses can react.
- Guaranteed critical hits. Assassinate makes every hit against a surprised (or not-yet-acted) enemy an automatic crit, so that five-arrow opener is often five crits, each carrying Sharpshooter’s +10 and Hunter’s Mark.
- Stealth control. Umbral Shroud (free invisibility) and Pass Without Trace let you set up the ambush reliably, imposing Surprise and skipping the enemy’s first turn entirely.
- Late-join, zero ramp. He joins near the level cap and walks straight into his best gear, so he’s immediately one of your top damage dealers.
The biggest weakness to Minsc and Ranger builds in general is starting combat. You always want to be in stealth, initiate combat to gain the Surprise status effect. When dialogue goes off the rails and combat starts without this option, it can be much more difficult. Therefore, always keep your distance and initiate combat from stealth to gain a big advantage on turn one.
How to Recruit & Respec Minsc (requires Jaheira)
Minsc only appears in Act 3, and his questline is gated behind Jaheira. She must have survived Act 2, or you can’t get him at all. Work through Jaheira’s questline, The High Harper, which will then lead to the Lower Sewers, Counting House, and the Guildhall. Through this questline, you’ll find Minsc acting as a crime boss under the Absolute’s control. You fight him, then break the control to free him, restored to his senses, he joins as the neutral-good hero he’s meant to be.
Minsc is firmly good-aligned and will disapprove of cruel choices, so he’s a better fit for a heroic party.
Once you recruit Minsc, you should immediately respec him. His default subclass is Hunter, which is much weaker and he won’t have the proper ability score or skills setup. Spend the 100 gold at Withers and go through each level we list below.
Character Creation Selections – Minsc build

| Choice | Selection |
| Character | Minsc (and Boo) |
| Race | Human (fixed) |
| Class | Ranger (start here) → Rogue → Fighter |
| Subclass | Gloomstalker (Ranger 3) · Assassin (Rogue 3) · Champion (Fighter 3) |
| Background | Folk Here (fixed) |
| Ability Scores | STR 8 DEX 16 CON 16 INT 10 WIS 14 CHA 10 |
| Skill Proficiencies | Athletics, Stealth, Perception |
Best Race for the Minsc Build
Minsc is locked to Human and can’t be changed. Humans get an extra skill and carry capacity, plus shield and armour proficiencies you won’t need. It’s not the optimal race for a pure meta build Archer, but it will work just fine.
Best Ability Scores (point buy) for Minsc Build

Dexterity is the most important attribute for Minsc and it should be set to 16. Even numbers grant bonuses, and there’s no point at setting it to an odd number. Next is Constitution, which can be set to 16 for more HP and better concentration saving throws with Hunter’s Mark. Lastly, Wisdom set to 14 is helpful for Perception skill checks. Keep Strength at 8 and your dump stat as you won’t need any.
Best Background
Minsc’s background is Folk Hero, granting proficiency in Animal Handling and Survival. These are both Wisdom-based skills, and they cannot be changed.
Best Skills

The best skills for Minsc are Stealth, Perception, and Athletics.
Leveling Progression – Minsc build

| Level | Class | Selection | Why it Matters |
| 1 | Ranger (1) | Favoured Enemy (Bounty Hunter), Natural Explorer (Fire), | Bonus-damage mark on your target |
| 2 | Ranger (2) | Fighting Style: Archery (+2 to ranged attacks); spells Spells: Hunter’s Mark, Ensnaring Strike | +2 to every shot, all game, huge with Sharpshooter |
| 3 | Ranger (3) | Gloomstalker: Dread Ambusher, Umbral Shroud Spell: Longstrider | +3 initiative, an extra first-turn attack, and free invisibility |
| 4 | Ranger (4) | Feat: Sharpshooter | −5 to hit / +10 damage; Archery’s +2 offsets much of the penalty |
| 5 | Ranger (5) | Extra Attack Spell: Pass Without Trace | Two attacks per action, the core damage doubler |
| 6 | Rogue (1) | Sneak Attack Proficiency (Acrobatics) Expertise (Stealth, Perception) | Bonus once-per-turn damage; strong skills |
| 7 | Rogue (2) | Cunning Action (bonus-action Hide/Dash) | Re-hide to reset stealth and Assassinate |
| 8 | Rogue (3) | Assassin: Assassinate | Auto-crit against surprised or not-yet-acted enemies |
| 9 | Rogue (4) | Feat: Ability Improvement (+2 DEX → 18) (or Alert) | Max accuracy/damage, or Alert to always act first |
| 10 | Fighter (1) | Fighting Style: Defense; Second Wind | +1 AC and a bonus-action self-heal |
| 11 | Fighter (2) | Action Surge | An entire extra action, turns a 3-attack burst into 5 |
| 12 | Fighter (3) | Champion (crit on 19–20) | More crits,or take Battle Master for Precision Attack to fix Sharpshooter misses |
Here are the most critical choices for you to pick and why:
- Ranger 3: Dread Ambusher: The extra first-turn attack and +3 initiative are the entire reason to run Gloomstalker.
- Ranger 4: Sharpshooter: +10 damage per arrow. With Archery’s +2 and Advantage from stealth, you still hit reliably.
- Rogue 3: Assassinate: Auto-crits on surprised enemies turn your opening barrage into a pile of guaranteed critical hits.
- Fighter 2: Action Surge: Doubles your action, pushing the turn-one burst to five attacks.
Best Spells, Feats & Class Features

- Hunter’s Mark is your always-on bonus damage. Attack from stealth, then cast it with a bonus action on your primary target.
- Pass Without Trace (+10 party Stealth) makes the Surprise round reliable.
- Ensnaring Strike keeps targets locked in place.
- Dread Ambusher (extra Turn-1 attack + initiative), Umbral Shroud (invisibility to reposition and re-open), Assassinate (auto-crit on the surprised), and Action Surge (a second volley).
- Champion makes normal hits crit on 19–20, so even after the surprise round you’re critting often.
- The Sharpshooter math: the −5 penalty is offset by Archery’s +2, high Dexterity, and Advantage from stealth. At three-to-five attacks a turn, +10 damage each is a massive net gain against any enemy at AC 14 or higher.
Multiclass Options

Ranger 5 / Assassin 4 / Fighter 3 is the highest-damage build; auto-crits, Action Surge, and Dread Ambusher together give the game’s best alpha strike.
Simpler alternative – Ranger 5 / Fighter 7 (Champion): drop the Rogue for pure Fighter. You lose Assassinate’s auto-crits but gain Battle Master maneuvers (or more Champion crits) with no multiclass bookkeeping, still a 5-attack Turn-1 with Action Surge.
Rapid-fire alternative – Ranger 5 / Thief 4 / Fighter 3 (dual hand crossbows): Thief’s extra bonus action means an extra off-hand shot every turn. More consistent per-round damage, less burst. Withers respecs for 100 gold to test any of them.
Action Economy & Buff Stacking

Before combat, make sure to use an Elixir, coat your weapon with oil, and then cast Pass Without Trace. Once buffed, sneak the party into position, and attack your priority target.
Turn 1 (you act first, Dread Ambusher’s +3 initiative):
- Action → two attacks (Extra Attack)
- Bonus Action → Hunter’s Mark (extra damage)
- Dread Ambusher bonus attack (first turn only)
- Action Surge → two more attacks
- All five hitting a surprised target are automatic critical hits via Assassinate, each with Sharpshooter (+10) and Hunter’s Mark
After Turn 1: two attacks per action plus a bonus-action shot or a re-Hide (Cunning Action + Umbral Shroud) to reset Assassinate and vanish from return fire.
Target priority (Honour Mode): kill enemy spellcasters and anything with paralyse/charm first, a boss with Legendary Actions can wait, but a mind flayer that gets a turn can end a run.
Gear Progression Path – Minsc build
Minsc joins in Act 3, so Acts 1–2 are just prep. Collect a couple of items in advance and gear him fully the moment he arrives. Below is a list of items to keep a lookout for in Act 2 as they can still be best in slot for Act 3:
- Risky Ring: Purchased from Araj Oblodra (Moonrise Towers).
- Killer’s Sweetheart: Found in the Gauntlet of Shar.
Act 3 (Best in Slot)

| Slot | Item | Effect | How to Get |
| Head | Helm of Balduran | Cannot be stunned | Found in Dragon’s Sanctum from Ansur. |
| Cape | Shade-Slayer Cloak | Reduces Critical threshold while hiding. | Purchased from Sticky Dondo (The Guildhall). |
| Chest | Armour of Agility | +2 Saving Throws and 17 AC | Purchased from Gloomy Fenonson in Stormshore Armoury. |
| Gloves | Legacy of the Masters | +2 Attack Roll | Sold by Dammon in Forge of the Nine. |
| Boots | Helldusk Boots | Cannot be moved against your will; grants Hellcrawler. | Found in Wyrm’s Rock Fortress (Gortash’s chest). |
| Necklace | Amulet of Greater Health | Sets Constitution to 23; Advantage on CON saves. | Stolen from the House of Hope. |
| Ring 1 | Risky Ring | Continued Advantage for Sharpshooter accuracy. | Carried over from Act 2. |
| Ring 2 | Killer’s Sweetheart | Grants an Auto-Critical after killing an enemy. | Carried over from Act 2. |
| Weapon 1 | Gontr Mael | Legendary Longbow: Grants Haste and Guiding Bolt. | Looted from the Steel Watch Titan (Foundry). |
| Weapon 2 | Bloodthirst | Reduces Critical threshold; grants True Strike riposte. | Looted from Orin the Red. |
| Weapon 2 (OH) | Rhapsody | +1 to Attack/Damage/DC for every kill (Max +3). | Looted from Cazador Szarr. |
Combat and Gameplay Strategy
The key to winning with Minsc as a Ranger is before the battle begins. Use an Elixir like Bloodlust, oil or coating on your weapon and enter sneak. You cast Pass Without Trace, move the party into stealth, and main hand attack your primary target. When you trigger combat from stealth, Minsc acts first (Dread Ambusher initiative) against surprised foes, unleashes the full five-attack, auto-crit barrage and something big dies immediately.
After the opening turn, use Cunning Action + Umbral Shroud to vanish, reposition to a new firing line, and re-open with Assassinate crits while staying out of return fire. Keep him at range and behind the frontline. Against bosses with Legendary Actions, equip the Helm of Balduran so a stun can’t interrupt your sequence, and clear dangerous adds (casters, controllers) before dumping your burst on the boss itself.
Potions, Elixirs, and Consumables

- Elixir of Bloodlust: extra action after a kill.
- Elixir of Cloud Giant Strength: sets Strength to 27 (+8 damage per hit) to power the Titanstring Bow. Skip it if you use Gontr Mael (which scales off Dexterity).
- Potion of Speed: a Haste-equivalent extra action for an even bigger burst (don’t overspend, Gontr Mael’s built-in Haste often covers it).
- Elixir of Vigilance: +5 initiative and no Surprise (redundant with Alert if you took it).
- Special arrows: Arrows of Many Targets for packs, Arrows of Ilmater for single-target burst.
Party Synergies
Minsc is your turn one range DPS; he wants setup and protection:
- A frontline (Karlach, Lae’zel): holds aggro so he can fire from safety.
- A support (Shadowheart): covers his lack of self-healing and can Haste him, though Gontr Mael’s built-in Haste frees her to concentrate on something else.
- A Bhaalist Armour frontliner (e.g. the melee Astarion build): Bhaalist’s aura doubles piercing damage for enemies near the wearer. So if a melee ally stands in an enemy’s face wearing it, Minsc’s arrows into that enemy hit doubled. The armour goes on the frontliner, never on Minsc, since his own aura can’t reach targets he’s shooting from range.
Avoid melee Battle Masters who knock enemies Prone. Prone targets give your ranged attacks Disadvantage, the opposite of what you want.
FAQs about the Minsc Build
How do I recruit Minsc?
He appears only in Act 3, through Jaheira’s questline (Counting House, Guildhall). You fight him while he’s under the Absolute’s control, then free him to recruit him.
Do I need Jaheira to get Minsc?
Yes. If Jaheira didn’t survive Act 2, Minsc’s questline is inaccessible, and you can’t recruit him.
What’s the best subclass for Minsc?
Gloomstalker for burst (this build). His default Hunter is better for sustained AoE; Swarmkeeper (Patch 8) is a fun thematic option that pairs psychic damage with the Act 2 Resonance Stone.
Should I respec Minsc?
Yes, respec him from Hunter to Gloomstalker for the turn-one alpha strike, which suits Act 3’s boss-heavy encounters.
What’s the best multiclass split for Minsc?
Ranger (Gloomstalker) 5 / Rogue (Assassin) 4 / Fighter (Champion) 3 for maximum burst; Ranger 5 / Fighter 7 if you want it simpler.
Bow or hand crossbows?
A longbow (Gontr Mael or Titanstring) with Sharpshooter for the biggest per-shot damage; dual hand crossbows (with a Thief dip) for more consistent rapid fire.
Should Minsc wear Bhaalist Armour?
No. Its Aura of Murder only doubles piercing damage for enemies within 3m of the wearer. A ranged archer standing back in stealth never benefits from his own aura. Put Bhaalist on a melee frontliner instead; then Minsc’s arrows into enemies standing next to that ally get doubled. On Minsc’s own body, use Armour of Agility.
