The Nature Domain Cleric build grants you heavy armor at level 1, a Druid cantrip, and a ton of nature-based spells that are always prepared. This is the reason you want to play a Nature Cleric: healing, support, plus nature-based control and damage spells all rolled into one. Plus, you gain Dampen Elements, one of the single best defensive reactions in BG3.
While Nature Domain is often overlooked, think of it as a powerful spellcasting tank, made for players who love nature but don’t want a Druid. This guide covers a pure spellcasting Nature Domain Cleric, tuned for Honour Mode. It’s a control-and-defense build that plays like an armored Druid with the full Cleric support list underneath
This build guide is updated for Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8, Community Update #36, Version Number: 4.1.1.7209685.

Why Use the Nature Domain Cleric Build?

The Nature domain Cleric has heavy armor, a wide array of spells, and land-based crowd control. Whether you want to single-target Hold Person, or engulf a massive portion of the map in plants, this is the build for you. Not to mention the best reaction in BG3, Dampen Elements. Here’s what you can expect with a Nature Druid in BG3:
- Dampen Elements halves elemental hits. When you or an ally within range takes acid, cold, fire, lightning, or thunder damage, you halve it. The game’s scariest burst is elemental (fireballs, lightning, Ansur the Dragon), and this reaction defuses it for the whole party.
- Heavy armor with no Strength tax. Like Life and War, Nature grants heavy armor at level 1, so you dump Strength to 8 and still wear heavy with high AC.
- A free Druid cantrip and a nature spell list. Shillelagh, Thorn Whip, Spike Growth, Plant Growth, and Sleet Storm come as always-prepared domain spells, granting you battlefield control that never eats your prepared slots.
- Full Cleric support underneath. Spirit Guardians, Healing Word, Revivify, Death Ward, and Heal are all yours, so you’re a controller, a tank, and the party’s medic in one slot.
The biggest weakness of the Nature druid is its Channel Divinity: Charm Animals and Plants. These two features only work on beasts and plants and are easily the weakest in the Cleric roster. Treat them as situational, not a core tool. And Divine Strike: Elemental Fury at level 8 is a modest 1d8 rider, so this isn’t a heavy melee-damage build; its offense is control and its aura, not big weapon hits.
BG3 Nature Domain Cleric Build Character Creation

| Choice | Selection |
| Class | Cleric |
| Subclass | Nature Domain |
| Best Race | Wood Elf |
| Background | Folk Hero |
| Ability Scores | STR 8 DEX 14 CON 16 INT 8 WIS 17 CHA 10 |
| Skill Proficiencies | Animal Handling, Survival (Folk Hero); plus Perception and a Nature-domain pick |
| Deity | Mielikki |
Best Race for the Nature Domain Cleric Build
Wood Elf makes the best choice in race because it fits both them and function, granting extra movement speed to reposition around your own Spike Growth, Fey Ancestry, Darkvision, and Mask of the Wild for stealth. Movement matters on a control caster who wants to place hazards and then stay clear of them.
Alternatives: Gold Dwarf for Dwarven Toughness and extra HP on a frontline tank, or Half-Orc if you plan to lean harder into the Elemental Fury melee damage dealer.
Best Ability Scores (point buy) for Nature Domain Cleric Build

Wisdom is your most important ability score, as it dictates your spell save DC, spell attack rolls, and your Shillelagh melee accuracy. Set Wisdom to 17 at character creation if you intend to take Auntie Ethel’s Hair (+1) in Act 1 to reach an even 18 early. If you plan to give that bonus to a party member, drop starting Wisdom to 16 and allocate those extra points into Intelligence.
Constitution is your second priority, set to 16 for crucial concentration saving throws, vital for keeping spells like Spike Growth and Bless active. Dexterity at 14 maximizes your +2 AC cap while wearing medium armor and ensures high Initiative. Charisma and Intelligence round out at 10 to keep saving throws neutral. Strength is your dump stat at 8; it offers no combat value.
Best Background

Folk Hero is the best fit for this build. It grants Animal Handling and Survival, both of which are Wisdom skills. On a Cleric with Wisdom 17+, that means a large bonus to two of the game’s most-used wilderness and beast-interaction checks. It also pairs thematically with your Speak with Animals domain spell for a character who genuinely commands the wild.
On deity: the pick is cosmetic in Baldur’s Gate 3, with only occasional dialogue flavor, but Mielikki (goddess of forests and rangers) is the thematic choice for a Nature Cleric and the one this build assumes.
Best Skills

Folk Hero covers Animal Handling and Survival for you. You get three skills to gain expertise in, take Nature, Insight, and Medicine. It’s natural for you to increase two Wisdom skills and nature is a must to fit the theme.
Leveling Progression – Nature Domain Cleric Build
Domain spells are granted free and are always prepared; they never count against your prepared-spell limit. The right-hand column is what you actually choose.
| Lvl | Features | Domain spells (free) | Cantrip / Prepared picks |
| 1 | Nature Domain: Acolyte of Nature (free Druid cantrip + skill); heavy armor proficiency | Animal Friendship, Speak with Animals | Cantrips: Guidance, Sacred Flame, Light, Shillelagh (Druid); Spells: Bless, Healing Word, Command, Guiding Bolt |
| 2 | Channel Divinity: Charm Animals and Plants; Turn Undead | – | Spell: Sanctuary |
| 3 | Level 2 spells | Spike Growth, Barkskin | Spells: Spiritual Weapon, Hold Person (drop Sanctuary) |
| 4 | Feat: War Caster; new cantrip | – | Cantrip: Resistance; Spell: Aid |
| 5 | Destroy Undead; level 3 spells | Plant Growth, Sleet Storm | Spell: Spirit Guardians |
| 6 | Dampen Elements; reaction to halve elemental damage | – | Spell: Mass Healing Word |
| 7 | Level 4 spells | Dominate Beast, Grasping Vine | Spell: Death Ward |
| 8 | Feat: Ability Improvement (+2 WIS, 17 to 19); Divine Strike: Elemental Fury (1d8, choose Cold/Fire/Lightning) | – | Spell: Freedom of Movement |
| 9 | Level 5 spells | Insect Plague, Wall of Stone | Spells: Flame Strike, Mass Cure Wounds |
| 10 | Divine Intervention | – | Cantrip: Bursting Sinew; Spell: Greater Restoration |
| 11 | Level 6 spells | – | Spell: Planar Ally |
| 12 | Feat: Alert | – | Spell: Heroes’ Feast |
Here are the most critical choices for you to pick and why:
- Level 1: take Shillelagh as your Druid cantrip. It turns your melee into a Wisdom-based d8 (later d10) with no Strength needed, so your one dump stat never hurts you. Thorn Whip is the alternative if you’d rather pull enemies into your hazards.
- Level 3: Spike Growth. The build’s signature control tool arrives here and stays relevant to the end of the game.
- Level 4: War Caster. Taken before Spirit Guardians so concentration protection is live when you need it, and you’ll be concentrating on Spike Growth constantly.
- Level 6: Dampen Elements. The reason to play Nature. From here you halve elemental damage for yourself and nearby allies as a reaction.
- Level 12: Alert. +5 initiative fixes the Cleric’s structural weakness, so your Spike Growth or Plant Growth locks the field before the enemy moves. Your Wisdom is capped at 20 via permanent boosts by then, so you don’t need a second Ability Improvement.
Best Spells, Cantrips & Channel Divinity

Cantrips. Shillelagh (your free Druid pick) makes a quarterstaff or club scale with Wisdom; your melee option that ignores Strength entirely. Sacred Flame is ranged radiant filler (pairs with the Callous Glow Ring), and Guidance is the best utility cantrip in the game. Bursting Sinew (picked up at level 10) detonates a nearby corpse for area damage.
Spells to prepare by tier (domain spells listed separately, since they’re free):
- Level 1; Domain: Animal Friendship, Speak with Animals. Prepared: Bless, Healing Word, Command, Guiding Bolt
- Level 2; Domain: Spike Growth, Barkskin. Prepared: Spiritual Weapon, Hold Person, Aid, Sanctuary
- Level 3; Domain: Plant Growth, Sleet Storm. Prepared: Spirit Guardians, Mass Healing Word
- Level 4; Domain: Dominate Beast, Grasping Vine. Prepared: Death Ward, Freedom of Movement
- Level 5; Domain: Insect Plague, Wall of Stone. Prepared: Flame Strike, Mass Cure Wounds
- Level 6; Prepared: Heroes’ Feast, Planar Ally

Spike Growth turns terrain into a slow, damaging hazard enemies have to crawl through. Plant Growth quashes movement in a huge radius. Make sure to drop these in choke points, but realize you can only have one source of concentration. If you need damage, go with Spiked; if you need ultimate slowing, go with Plant Growth.
Sleet Storm knocks enemies prone and breaks their concentration. Wall of Stone seals a chokepoint. These are always prepared and free, so treat them as your real toolkit and use your prepared slots for Cleric staples like Spirit Guardians and the healing suite.
Channel Divinity; two, one weak:
- Charm Animals and Plants (level 2): charms nearby beasts and plants. Situationally useful against wildlife and some Act 1-2 enemies, but useless against most humanoids and constructs. Don’t build around it.
- Turn Undead / Destroy Undead: clears the undead-heavy stretches of Act 2, with Destroy Undead outright killing weaker ones from level 5.
Dampen Elements (level 6) isn’t a Channel Divinity, but it’s your defining ability: a reaction that halves incoming acid, cold, fire, lightning, or thunder damage to you or a nearby ally. Keep your reaction open for it in any fight with elemental threats.
Multiclass Options
Pure Cleric 12 (recommended). Nature already grants heavy armor at level 1, so the usual Fighter dip buys little, and staying pure keeps Heal, Heroes’ Feast, and a third feat. This is the cleanest version.
Nature Cleric 1 as a dip for Druids. This is the domain’s most famous use: a single Nature level on a Druid grants heavy armor proficiency, and BG3 Druids can wear metal; plus Shillelagh and a couple of nature spells that don’t cost prepared slots. If you searched your way here from a Druid build, one level of Nature Cleric is the armor fix.
Nature Cleric 10 / Druid 2 (Circle of the Moon). For a Wild Shape variant: Moon Druid’s beast forms plus the Cleric’s spell support. You lose your top two Cleric levels (Heal, a feat), and it’s a very different playstyle, but it doubles down on the Druid theme.
Withers respecs for 100 gold to test any of these.
Action Economy & Buff Stacking

Before combat begins, pre-buff with Elixir, Bless, Freedom of Movement, Death Ward, Heroes’ Feast, Aid, and then Bless if you don’t need concentration on turn one. If you can see the fight coming, pre-place yourself near the chokepoint you intend to lock down.
Each turn:
- Action → Spike Growth or Plant Growth to shut down enemy movement on turn one, then Spirit Guardians, a control spell, or Flame Strike after.
- Bonus Action → Healing Word to pick up an ally, or Spiritual Weapon for chip damage.
- Reaction → keep it open for Dampen Elements in any elemental fight. This is the single most important habit on the build; a held reaction that halves a fireball is worth more than almost anything else you could do.
- Channel Divinity → Charm Animals and Plants only when the field is actually beasts or plants.
Your combat goal is to lock enemies into a hazard, hold your reaction for Dampen Elements, and let the terrain grind them down as they struggle to reach you. You control the tempo.
Gear Progression Path – Nature Domain Cleric Build
You get heavy armor at level 1, so wear the heaviest plate available, and lean gear toward spell save DC (so your control lands) and concentration protection (so it holds).

Note: Markoheshkir’s elemental empowerment lets you match your Divine Strike: Elemental Fury damage type to whatever element you’ve buffed, which is a small but real synergy if you go for a more offensive Act 3 setup.
Potions, Elixirs, and Consumables

Only one elixir can be active at a time.
- Always carry: Scrolls of Revivify, plus elemental resistance potions to stack with Dampen Elements against a known elemental boss.
- Elixir of Peerless Focus; concentration-loss immunity, which protects Spike Growth and Spirit Guardians through incoming damage. A strong default on a control build.
- Elixir of Vigilance; +5 initiative and no Surprise, so you place your hazard before the enemy moves.
- Superior Elixir of Arcane Cultivation; an extra level-3 slot for another Plant Growth or Spirit Guardians.
Illithid Powers and Synergies
- Black Hole; pulls a pack into one spot, right into your Spike Growth and Spirit Guardians. The best offensive power for a control Cleric.
- Fly; reposition over your own hazards without walking through them.
- Favourable Beginnings; Advantage and a bonus on your opening control spell so it lands.
- Cull the Weak; free finishing damage on enemies your terrain has already worn down.
Permanent Bonus Tracker
Funnel every permanent Wisdom source into this build:
| Permanent buff | Act | Location | Effect |
| Auntie Ethel’s Hair | 1 | Spare or deal with Auntie Ethel | +1 to a chosen stat; take Wisdom |
| Mirror of Loss | 3 | Gauntlet of Shar | +2 Wisdom after the ritual |
Start Wisdom 17, take Auntie Ethel’s Hair in Act 1 for 18, then the level-8 Ability Improvement caps you at 20. If you miss Ethel, the Mirror of Loss (+2) reaches 20 the same way. Either path hits the cap without spending your level-12 feat, which is reserved for Alert.
Party Synergies
The Nature Cleric controls space and blunts elemental burst, so build a party that capitalizes on stranded enemies.
- Melee (Lae’zel Fighter): Keep Lae’zel near illusion for advantage with Greatsword and Great Weapon Master.
- A controller (Gale Wizard): stacks hazards and area damage inside the zone you’ve locked down.
- Rogue Range (Astarion as Multiclass): while your Spike Growth or Plant Growth strands the enemy, your ranged allies pick them off from safety. This is your best pairing; you make the enemy stand still and your team shoots them.
Avoid: a dedicated healer; Healing Word, Mass Healing Word, and Revivify cover the party.
BG3 Nature Domain Cleric Build FAQ
1. Is the Nature Cleric good in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Yes, It’s a durable control caster with heavy armor, strong battlefield-control spells (Spike Growth, Plant Growth). Plus, Dampen Elements is the best anti-elemental reaction in the game. It shines in elemental-heavy fights and against melee packs but it’s less of a raw damage dealer than Tempest or War.
2. Why is Nature Domain considered underrated?
Because its Channel Divinity (Charm Animals and Plants) is weak, players judge the whole subclass by it. The real value is Dampen Elements, the free Druid cantrip and nature spell list, and heavy armor; none of which depend on the Channel Divinity.
3. Does Nature Cleric get heavy armor?
Yes, at level 1, with no Strength requirement.
4. Should I take Shillelagh?
Yes, as your free Nature Druid cantrip. It makes your melee scale with Wisdom instead of Strength, so your dumped Strength score never costs you anything on a weapon turn.
5. Is a Nature Cleric dip good for Druids?
Yes. Just one level grants heavy armor proficiency (BG3 Druids can wear medium), Shillelagh, and nature spells that don’t use prepared slots; a popular one-level fix for a Druid’s low early AC.
