Latest Update: September 5, 2026 – Categories: Baldur’s Gate 3
Tired of the same old boring Shadowheart build in BG3? Try the Radiant Orb Light Cleric build that works to deal massive radiant damage, debuff enemies, all while maintaining heavy support and healing spells. Whether you want to be a walking tank, heal bot, or hit enemies with Guiding Bolt from a distance, this ultimate Shadowheart Build is perfect for you!

Shadowheart is the first companion you meet in BG3 and she’s automatically assigned to the Trickery Domain Cleric subclass. That subclass is nearly useless at higher levels, and once you respec her to a Light Cleric built on generating debuffs, she becomes an unstoppable juggernaut.
Thanks to the games Radiant Orb mechanics, gear sets, and radiant damage passively generated with the Light Cleric, Shadowheart can be both support, tank, and even damage dealer all in one. Will walk you through this guide as we strip away the “Shadowheart can only heal” premise behind one of BG3 favorite and most used companions into the main force on the battle field!.
This build guide is updated for Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8, Community Update #36, Verizon Number: 4.1.1.7209685.

Why Use the Shadowheart Cleric Build?

Shadowheart’s companion story is riveting, and one of the most beloved stories in all of BG3. Even if you don’t like the character, she’s essential for unlocking the Mirror of the Loss bonus in Act 3. A permanent +2 to whatever ability score you prefer! Beyond that, she’s a cleric class character with a variety of Domains to pick from. We believe the Light Cleric gives her the most potential on the battlefield: Life Domain is the stronger pure healing and tank option, while the default Trickery subclass is the weakest choice for this build approach, so this guide transforms Shadowheart into a higher-impact Light Cleric instead of keeping her default setup. tempest cleric is another high-impact option, but this guide prioritizes Light. Here’s what you can expect from this Shadowheart build:
- She makes the whole party tankier. Spirit Guardians plus the Radiating Orb gear stacks a stacking −1-to-hit penalty on every enemy near her. Fully stacked, that’s up to −10 to enemy attack rolls. This is like giving your entire party +10 AC – amazing for Honour mode!
- Best-in-class healing and revival. Mass Healing Word, Heal, Aid, Death Ward, and Revivify mean nobody on your team stays down. Blood of Lathander even auto-revives yourself once per long rest.
- Free defensive reactions. Warding Flare imposes Disadvantage on an attacker every turn with no spell-slot cost. Sometimes prevention is better than the cure, and this can be used constantly as a reaction.
- Radiant damage that scales all game. Sacred Flame, Spirit Guardians, and Radiance of the Dawn stay relevant from Act 1 to the final boss, and Act 2 is full of radiant-vulnerable undead.
Weaknesses: she leans on Concentration (Spirit Guardians), so protect it with War Caster and the right gear. She’s also gear-dependent. Shadowheart Light Cleric build truly shines in Act 2 once you assemble the Radiating Orb set. It’s almost mandatory to pick up some gear in Act 1 to take full advantage of this setup.
Shadowheart Build Class & Subclass

| Choice | Selection |
| Character | Shadowheart |
| Race | High Half-Elf (fixed) |
| Class | Cleric |
| Subclass | Light Domain (respec from Trickery) |
| Background | Acolyte (fixed – grants Insight & Religion) |
| Ability Scores | STR 8 DEX 14 CON 16 INT 8 WIS 17 CHA 10 |
| Skill Proficiencies | Medicine, Persuasion |
Best Race for the Shadowheart Build
Shadowheart is locked to High Half-Elf and her race can’t be changed without mods. While High Half-Elf isn’t the best race, you do gain Fey Ancestry (Advantage vs. being Charmed, immunity to magical Sleep), Darkvision, an extra skill, and one bonus Wizard cantrip.
Best Ability Scores (point buy) for a Shadowheart Build

Wisdom is your primary ability score, so when assigning ability points you want to set it at 17, which is the respec/character creation max. If you get Auntie Ethel’s Hair in Act 1, you can push this to 18. Then, with one ability score 20. This will help with accuracy, damage, and everything related to doing damage. Constitution is your next most important stat. Beyond health it helps with concentration saving throws, and stronger CON also improves constitution saving throw reliability. This is critical because you’re entire goal is to hold Spiritual Guardian concentration while moving around debuff targets. Thus, having 16 or more CON is amazing. Lastly 14 Dexterity is helpful because the build uses medium armor, not heavy and you’ll get +2 AC with 14 DEX, start earlier in combat order, and perform better on a Dexterity Saving Throw. Dump both strength and intelligence and keep Charisma at 10.
Best Background
Companions keep their background, so Shadowheart stays Acolyte (Insight + Religion). You can’t change it so lean into learning more wisdom based skills like Perception which is key while exploring.
Best Skills
On respec, take Medicine and Persuasion. Ideally, you want to take any skill in Wisdom, but Persuasion can come in handy if you use Shadowheart to talk.
Shadowheart Leveling Progression

| Level | Class | Selection | Why it Matters |
| 1 | Cleric (1) | Light Domain; Cantrips: Guidance, Sacred Flame, Thaumaturgy, Firebolt (Race) Change spells to: Command, Sanctuary, Guiding Bolt, Healing Word | Free defensive reaction and an AoE radiant burst from turn one |
| 2 | Cleric (2) | Channel Divinity: Radiance of the Dawn, Turn Undead Spell: Prepare Bless | Crowd-controls the undead that fill Act 2, and AOE Nuke with Radiance (Radiant damage) |
| 3 | Cleric (3) | Lvl 2 spells: Add Spiritual Weapon | Summon interferes with enemies |
| 4 | Cleric (4) | Cantrip: Toll the Dead Spell: Aid Feat: War Caster | Advantage on Concentration saves, protects Spirit Guardians before you even have it |
| 5 | Cleric (5) | Spell: Spirit Guardians | Power spike, the radiant aura that fuels the entire Radiating Orb engine |
| 6 | Cleric (6) | Improved Warding Flare (extra uses) Spell: drop Healing Word for Mass Healing Word Slot Glyph of Warding | More free Disadvantage to spread across enemies |
| 7 | Cleric (7) | Lvl 4 spells: Freedom of Movement | Pre-buff cannot be restrained until long rest. |
| 8 | Cleric (8) | Spell: Death Ward Feat: ASI Wisdom +2 | Helps spellcasting and you can pre-buff with Death Ward |
| 9 | Cleric (9) | Lvl 5 spells: Mass Cure Wounds, Banishment | Big group healing plus a great crowd control spell |
| 10 | Cleric (10) | Divine Intervention Cantrip: Blade Ward Spell: Hold Person | Once-per-game miracle: mass-revive allies or a huge radiant blast |
| 11 | Cleric (11) | Lvl 6 spells: Heroes’ Feast | Heroes’ Feast buffs and protects the whole party |
| 12 | Cleric (12) | Feat: Alert Spell: Planar Ally | Initiative to set Spirit Guardians before enemies move |
Here are the most critical choices for you to pick and why:
- Level 1 – Prepared Spells: Make sure after you meet Shadowheart or respec her, to swap in and out spells. She will by default have a goofy spell loadout and you want to put four useful spells rather than what the game auto assigns.
- Level 4 – War Caster: Your entire game plan rides on keeping Spirit Guardians active. Advantage on Concentration saves is non-negotiable.
- Level 5 – Spirit Guardians: This is the build. It deals radiant damage to every adjacent enemy each turn, which triggers every piece of your Radiating Orb gear at once.
- Level 8 – Potent Spellcasting + Wisdom: Free cantrip scaling plus a higher save DC turns your “filler” turns into real damage.
- Level 11 – Heroes’ Feast – Make sure to do a pre-buff ritual where you cast Heroes’ Feast, Death Ward, Freedom of Movement and any other until long rest spell that doesn’t require concentration. Rangers have Longstrider and it can be used on all characters. While it’s annoying to do this after every rest, it makes a huge difference once you enter combat.
- By level 12, Shadowheart can prepare up to 16 spells, so the following spells below can flex into more utility picks between encounters and give you a huge boost.
Best Spells, Cantrips & Channel Divinity

Cantrips – These cleric cantrips should be your default picks:
- Guidance (the best utility cantrip in the game)
- Sacred Flame (radiant, targets Dexterity, scales with Potent Spellcasting)
- Light (cast it on yourself before combat to keep the Coruscation Ring active)
- Resistance
Spells to prepare by tier:
- Level 1: Command, Sanctuary, Guiding Bolt, Healing Word, Bless
- Level 2: Spiritual Weapon, Aid, Hold Person
- Level 3: Spirit Guardians, Mass Healing Word, Glyph of Warding
- Level 4: Death Ward, Freedom of Movement, Banishment
- Level 5: Mass Cure Wounds
- Level 6: Heroes’ Feast, Planar Ally
You also get other spells from your subclass automatically, so they do not count against your prepared limit.
Your subclass will unlock a variety of domain spells without needing to prepare them, effectively giving the build extra spells. Make sure to use Destructive Wave once you’re in the heart of the enemies, as it is one of the more powerful spells you get later, while Spirit Guardians remains a powerful spell for Trickery Domain too if you stay on that subclass. It deals Thunder and Radiant, which can debuff and knock prone, giving you more good spells for clustered fights.

Channel Divinity: Radiance of the Dawn is your signature an AoE radiant burst that ignores cover and can carry early fights. Turn Undead scatters the undead hordes of Act 2. At higher Cleric levels, this upgrades into Destroy Undead against affected undead enemies. You’ll regain charges on a short rest, and the Amulet of the Devout (Act 3) grants an extra Channel Divinity charge. Radiance of the Dawn can be used without spell slots or while in a silenced area. Make sure to use when massive radius AOE is required.
Shadowheart Multiclass Options
For a Shadowheart Light Cleric build, stay pure Cleric 12. Only a single class gives you 6th-level spells (Heal, Heroes’ Feast) and the Divine Intervention miracle, and the build wants every spell slot it can get to keep Spirit Guardians and big heals flowing. If you want to play Shadowheart as a stealthier support, her Trickery Cleric base also pairs naturally with Thief Rogue for better skill coverage.
If you want her tankier, the one worthwhile alternative is a 1-level Fighter dip (e.g. Cleric 11 / Fighter 1) for heavy-armour proficiency, a shield, the Defense fighting style (+1 AC), and Second Wind. Another alternative to compensate for Shadowheart’s weak mobility is 1 level in Stormy Sorcerer. This grants a version of Flight after you cast a spell and helps greatly with mobility but you lose out on a feat which sometimes isn’t worth it.
Action Economy & Buff Stacking

Before combat: cast Light on yourself (keeps the Coruscation Ring active), cast Aid on the party, and drink an Elixir of Vigilance so a famously slow Cleric acts first. You can also use Heroes’ Feast, Freedom of Movement, and other class spells like Longstrider. Go through a constant buff cycle so you start with a huge amount of buffs.
Each turn:
- Action → cast Spirit Guardians at your highest slot, then walk into the enemy cluster.
- Bonus Action → Spiritual Weapon (summon and attack) or Healing Word to pick an ally up from range while also proccing your buffing gear for stronger party support.
- Reaction → Warding Flare to impose Disadvantage on whatever’s swinging at a squishy ally.

Spirit Guardians’ radiant damage triggers Luminous Armour’s shockwave plus the Coruscation and Callous Glow Rings, stacking Radiating Orb on every nearby enemy. Each stack is −1 to their attack rolls, up to −10. You’re not just healing the damage your party takes, you’re preventing most of it from ever landing. That’s what makes this a support build, not just a healer.
Remember to select Radiant damage not Necrotic when the option appears. After you cast this, make sure to use your action for AOE based Radiant damage like Radiance of Dawn or ranged damage options like Guiding Bolt. Keep the stacks coming and offensive pressure by moving towards a pack of enemies.
Key Story Decision: Shar vs Selûne (affects her gear)

This is unique to playing Shadowheart, and it’s a one-way choice, plan before you enter the Shadowfell. In Act 2’s Gauntlet of Shar you reach the Nightsong (Aylin):
- Spare Aylin (reject Shar / Selûne path): the thematically perfect ending for a Light Cleric of the dawn, and it doesn’t cost you anything this build needs, your weapon is the Blood of Lathander regardless.
- Kill Aylin (Shar / Dark Justiciar path): locks Shadowheart into the Spear of Night and the Dark Justiciar armour set. The spear is a strong weapon, but it pulls away from the light-and-radiant synergy this build is built around.
Either way the Radiating Orb engine works, because it runs off the mace and rings, not her quest reward. Just know the decision is permanent and changes which unique gear she can equip. Plus it will change Shadowhearts appearance!
Shadowheart build Gear Progression

The build comes online in Act 2 once you assemble the Radiating Orb set (Luminous Armour + Luminous Gloves + Coruscation Ring + Callous Glow Ring, all powered by the Blood of Lathander).

*Note: For the gloves, your choice revolves around how much thunder damage you plan on using. At higher levels, the Destructive Wave spell deals both Radiant and Thunder damage. If you have a radiant source plus Gloves of Belligerent, you can potentially debuff and AOE prone stun a huge group. Luminous Gloves is also a great choice.
Once you get Amulet of Greater Health, you can respec and drop War Caster feat at level 4. If that’s annoying, use Amulet of the Devout instead. Hood of the Weave and Cloak of the Weave are also solid caster swaps if you want more spell attack rolls and spell save DC over the core orb setup.*
Shadowheart Combat and Gameplay Strategy (Act 1-3)
Early Game Strategy (Act 1)

Until you hit level 5 you’re a frontline support: cast Bless at the start of fights, one of your good spells before the level-5 power spike, throw Guiding Bolt for burst (and Advantage for an ally), while Fire Bolt is your racial damage cantrip when you want a simple ranged option without spending spell slots, and keep Healing Word in your back pocket. Use Radiance of the Dawn when enemies cluster. Prioritize grabbing the Blood of Lathander and Adamantine gear from Grymforge, both are huge early power and defense.
Mid-Game Strategy (Act 2)

Open every fight by casting Light on yourself, then Spirit Guardians, then walking into the enemy pack, with Spirit Guardians and Radiance of the Dawn pressuring nearby creatures as you advance through packs. Act 2 is wall-to-wall undead, all vulnerable to your radiant damage, so your aura and Radiance of the Dawn delete groups and can punish a failed saving throw across grouped undead while stacking Radiating Orb to cripple anything still standing. Keep Warding Flare for whoever targets your squishiest ally.
Late Game Strategy (Act 3)

Lead with Spirit Guardians, fill bonus actions with Spiritual Weapon and heals, and save Mass Cure Wounds, and Death Ward for emergencies. Insect Plague is also a strong level-9 control option when you need area denial against multiple enemies instead of pure healing. Against big bosses (Gortash, Cazador, the Netherbrain) pre-buff with Heroes’ Feast and an Elixir of Vigilance so you set your aura before the enemy acts and help the party resist hostile spell effects. Hold Person can also set up critical hits for your melee allies when it lands on humanoid targets, and Destructive Wave is one of your maximum damage AoE options if you want to play more aggressively.
Potions, Elixirs, and Consumables

- Elixir of Vigilance – +5 initiative and no Surprise. Clerics are slow; this lets you set Spirit Guardians first. Your default daily elixir.
- Superior Elixir of Arcane Cultivation – an extra level-3 spell slot, i.e. one more Spirit Guardians “tank charge” for the day.
- Potion of Speed – extra action + movement to Dash through a pack and stack Radiating Orb on everyone in one turn.
- Always carry: Scrolls of Revivify, a few healing potions, and Bless scrolls for non-cleric party members.
Illithid Powers and Synergies
Whether you give tadpole powers to Shadowheart or your protagonist, these help a support Cleric most:
- Favourable Beginnings – Advantage and a bonus on your first attack/check each fight (great on the opening Guiding Bolt).
- Luck of the Far Realms – turn a hit into a guaranteed critical; devastating on Guiding Bolt.
- Black Hole – pulls enemies into one cluster, right where Spirit Guardians and your Radiating Orb shockwave want them.
- Fly – position your aura exactly where it does the most work.
- Cull the Weak – free finishing damage to low-HP enemies, which also spreads Radiating Orb.

Party Synergies
You want a balanced party using Shadowheart with a frontline warrior, spellcasters, and utility dex based character. Here are the recommendations below:
- Frontline (Lae’zel, Karlach, or your martial): clusters enemies into Spirit Guardians and support these melee characters with Bless + Aid + Warding Flare protection.
- Controller/caster (Gale): Black Hole, Hypnotic Pattern, or Fireball, use big AOE and control spells.
- Utility (Astarion): Keep him at range with a Shortbow and picking locks while exploring.
Every point of Radiating Orb she applies is effectively +accuracy and +survivability for the whole party. Build aggressive allies around her and let her reduce the enemy’s offense.
BG3 Shadowheart Build FAQ
1. Is Light Domain the best build for Shadowheart?
For a support-and-healer role, yes. Light gives free defensive reactions (Warding Flare), the Radiating Orb debuff, and radiant damage that scales all game. Life Domain heals slightly harder but does far less for the rest of your party.
2. Should I respec Shadowheart?
Yes, by default Trickery Domain has almost no combat value until level 8. Respec her at Withers (100 gold) to Light Domain in early Act 1.
3. Can I change Shadowheart’s race?
No. Companion races are fixed, she’s a High Half-Elf and stays one without mods. Her starting Wisdom 17 is already ideal for a Cleric.
4. Does respeccing change her story?
No. Respec only changes her mechanics, all dialogue, approval, romance, and her personal quest are untouched.
5. When should I respec her?
As soon as Withers is in camp after freeing him from the Dank Crypt early in Act 1.
6. What are the best feats for Shadowheart?
War Caster first (it helps concentration checks), then Ability Improvement for Wisdom, since a higher wisdom modifier boosts spellcasting and later adds damage through Potent Spellcasting, then Alert for initiative.
7. Does the Shar vs Selûne choice affect this build?
Only her unique weapon/armour reward plus appearance. The build’s power comes from the Blood of Lathander and Radiating Orb gear, so either path works, but Selûne fits a Light Cleric thematically. If you want a darker or more martial route, Tempest or Trickery variants can offer more melee attack support than this Light setup.
