The Great Old One is the Warlock you build when you want to maximize crits and fear in melee. Its signature, Mortal Reminder, is a passive that Frightens the target and every enemy near it whenever you land a critical hit. Thus, the Great Old One that crits often is able to lock down groups of enemies. Give it a Shadow Blade, the Champion subclass to crit on a wider range, and a Darkness cloud to attack from with Advantage, and you get a melee DPS that has high survivability and damage.
This guide covers a Warlock 8 / Fighter 4 (Champion) melee build that wields a Shadow Blade and fishes for critical hits to trigger Mortal Reminder’s mass fear. The Fighter Champion levels lower your critical-hit threshold so you crit far more often, Pact of the Blade lets your Shadow Blade attack with Charisma, and Darkness plus Devil’s Sight keeps you attacking with Advantage while the enemy is Blinded. It plays almost exactly like a Hexblade, but its crits frighten whole packs; it is a melee crit-fear duelist that carves through a group while it cowers.
This build guide is updated for Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8, Community Update #36, Version Number: 4.1.1.7209685.

Why Use the Great Old One Warlock Build?

The Great Old One build blends massive damage, control, and survivability. It has a slow start since you need a few levels to get everything unlocked. Once you do, you can hit for over 100 damage in a single attack (see above), all while being nearly impossible to hit. This is the ultimate burst Warlock that also fears and immobilizes enemies. Here’s what you can expect with the Great Old One Warlock build in BG3:
- Mortal Reminder frightens on every crit. Land a critical hit and the target plus every enemy within 3m must save or be Frightened; frightened enemies can’t move toward you and attack at Disadvantage. With Champion’s lowered crit range you crit constantly, so you frighten a pack almost every turn.
- Champion turns crits into your whole game plan. Four Fighter levels give you the Champion subclass, which lowers your critical-hit threshold so you crit on a wider roll range; combined with Advantage from Darkness, you crit often enough that Mortal Reminder is a reliable control button, not a lucky bonus.
- Shadow Blade is a perfect Hexblade-style weapon. A summoned psychic sword that needs no concentration and lasts until a long rest; bound with Pact of the Blade it attacks with your Charisma, deals psychic damage, and crits for a big spike. Darkness plus Devil’s Sight then lets you swing it with permanent Advantage while enemies are Blinded.
- Entropic Ward is a strong reaction. At Warlock 6, impose Disadvantage on an attacker; if they miss, you gain Advantage on your next attack against them, which feeds your crit-fishing.
The weakness of the build is reliance on crits and critical optimizing gear. Therefore, it is at its best once Champion (character level 11) and Advantage from Darkness are online. Before then, Mortal Reminder is less reliable. It gives up the Warlock’s Mystic Arcanum (you stop at Warlock 8) and, because Fighter 4 does not grant Extra Attack, your second swing comes from Pact of the Blade’s Deepened Pact, which does not stack with Fighter Extra Attack in Honour Mode (a non-issue here since you never take Fighter 5). It is very close to a Hexblade in playstyle; you pick it over the Hexblade specifically for the crit-triggered mass fear.
The Great Old One Warlock Build Character Creation

| Origin | Tav (or Dark Urge) |
| Class | Warlock |
| Subclass | The Great Old One |
| Best Race | Half-Orc |
| Background | Charlatan |
| Ability Scores | STR 8 DEX 14 CON 16 INT 8 WIS 10 CHA 17 |
| Skill Proficiencies | Deception, Intimidation |
Best Race for the Great Old One Warlock Build

Half-Orc is the best pick for a crit-focused build because of Savage Attacks: it adds an extra weapon die on a melee crit. Since your whole damage is centered around landing crits to trigger Mortal Reminder, more crit damage is exactly what you want. Relentless Endurance is a survival net.
Drow offers Faerie Fire (Advantage helps you crit) and Darkness synergy; Duergar gives Invisibility for setting up sneak attack crits.
Best Ability Scores (point buy) for the Great Old One Warlock Build

Charisma is your most important ability score because it not only increases your spell damage and saves, but also your weapon attacks due to Pact of the Blade. Your Shadow Blade or any bound weapon will use Charisma as your damage modifier, not Strength or Dexterity.
Run Charisma 17, Constitution 16 (you are a melee frontliner holding concentration on Darkness, so HP and concentration both matter), and Dexterity 14 for AC and initiative. Dump Strength and Intelligence.
Note a Patch 8 quirk: Mortal Reminder’s Wisdom save for the frightened enemies uses the spellcasting modifier of your first class, so start Warlock to keep it tied to your Charisma. Keep Charisma odd for Auntie Ethel’s Hair and push toward 22 by late game.
Best Background

Charlatan (Deception) or Haunted One fit the eldritch-pact flavor and give a Charisma skill.
Best Skills

Make sure to max your Charisma-based skills with proficiency. If you went with Charlatan, then you can increase two Intelligence-based skills.
Leveling Progression – The Great Old One Warlock Build
The table lists the class level, the key feature, your recommended selections, and why each matters.
| Level | Unlocks | Selection | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (Warlock 1) | The Great Old One; Mortal Reminder; Pact Magic | Cantrips: Eldritch Blast, Booming Blade; Spells: Hex, Hellish Rebuke | Start Warlock so Mortal Reminder’s fear DC and your Pact weapon both key off Charisma |
| 2 (Warlock 2) | Eldritch Invocations: Agonizing Blast, Devil’s Sight | Spell: Armour of Agathys | Devil’s Sight is half of your Darkness engine; you see and act normally inside it |
| 3 (Fighter 1) | Fighting Style: Defence (+1 AC) | Medium armor and shield proficiency | A shield and medium armor make a melee Warlock much tougher |
| 4 (Fighter 2) | Action Surge | – | A second full attack turn; a burst of extra crit chances on demand |
| 5 (Warlock 3) | Pact Boon: Pact of the Blade; Shadow Blade available | Spell: Shadow Blade | Shadow Blade is your weapon; Pact of the Blade makes it attack with Charisma and grants the extra attack at Warlock 5 |
| 6 (Warlock 4) | Feat: Ability Improvement (+2 CHA) | Cantrip: Friends; Spell: Darkness | Darkness plus Devil’s Sight lets you attack with Advantage while enemies are Blinded |
| 7 (Warlock 5) | Deepened Pact (extra attack with the Shadow Blade) | Spell: Hunger of Hadar; Invocation: One with Shadows | Two Shadow Blade swings a turn doubles your crit chances; One with Shadows adds invisibility in dim light |
| 8 (Warlock 6) | Entropic Ward (reaction: Disadvantage on an attacker) | Spell: Counterspell | A missed attack via Entropic Ward hands you Advantage back for your next crit attempt |
| 9 (Warlock 7) | Level-4 Pact slots | Spell: Misty Step; Invocation: Dreadful Word | Dreadful Word (Confusion) gives you a second mass-control button alongside Mortal Reminder |
| 10 (Warlock 8) | Feat: Savage Attacker | Spell: Mirror Image (no concentration) | Savage Attacker rerolls your weapon dice for bigger crits; Mirror Image is concentration-free defense |
| 11 (Fighter 3) | Champion subclass (lowered critical-hit threshold) | – | The payoff; Champion makes you crit on a wider range, so Mortal Reminder fires far more often |
| 12 (Fighter 4) | Feat: Alert | – | +5 initiative so you get Darkness and the first crits up before the enemy acts |
Here are the most critical choices for you to pick and why:
- Level 11 (Fighter 3); Champion. The whole reason for the Fighter split. Champion lowers your critical-hit threshold so you crit on a wider roll range; combined with Advantage from Darkness, you crit often enough that Mortal Reminder’s mass fear is a reliable control button every turn.
- Level 1: Mortal Reminder. Your signature; every crit frightens the target and the cluster around it. Everything in the build exists to land crits and trigger it.
- Level 5 (Warlock 3): Pact of the Blade and Shadow Blade. Shadow Blade becomes your weapon; it needs no concentration, lasts until a long rest, deals psychic damage, and (bound with Pact of the Blade) attacks with your Charisma. Two levels later, Deepened Pact gives you a second swing with it.
- Level 6 (Warlock 4); Darkness. Paired with Devil’s Sight from level 2, a Darkness cloud is both your defense and your accuracy engine: you attack with Advantage from inside it while enemies are Blinded and swing at you with Disadvantage. Advantage also stacks your crit chance on top of Champion.
Best Spells, Cantrips & Invocations

Cantrips. Booming Blade (a melee cantrip that scales with Charisma and can crit) is a strong single-target opener; remember it only applies to one attack per turn, so your second Shadow Blade swing is a normal attack. Eldritch Blast (with Agonizing Blast) is your ranged option for when you can’t reach a target, and another crit source.
Spells to prioritize:
- Level 1: Hex (extra damage on every hit + a stat debuff), Hellish Rebuke (reaction fire damage), Armour of Agathys (early temp-HP shield)
- Level 2: Shadow Blade (your weapon; no concentration, lasts until long rest), Darkness (your defense and Advantage engine), Misty Step, Mirror Image (no-concentration defense)
- Level 3+: Hunger of Hadar (a blind-and-damage zone), Counterspell, Confusion (via the Dreadful Word invocation)
The must-haves: Shadow Blade (bind it with Pact of the Blade after each long rest; this is your whole weapon), Darkness (drop it on yourself and fight from inside it with Devil’s Sight), Hex (up every fight for extra damage on every swing), and Hunger of Hadar (zone denial that also blinds). Counterspell shuts down the enemy caster.
Invocations: Agonizing Blast (Charisma to your Eldritch Blast beams), Devil’s Sight (see and act normally inside a Darkness cloud, so you attack with Advantage while enemies are Blinded), One with Shadows (invisibility in dim light for repositioning), and Dreadful Word (cast Confusion once per short rest for a second mass-control button).

A note on psychic damage: Shadow Blade deals psychic damage, so if you happen to grab the Resonance Stone in Act 2 it doubles your Shadow Blade hits, a nice bonus. But this build’s identity is the Champion crit range plus Mortal Reminder fear, not the psychic stack, so the Resonance Stone is a strong optional pickup rather than a requirement.
Multiclass Options

This build is Warlock 8 / Fighter 4 (Champion), so you can land critical hits more easily, gain armor and weapon proficiencies, and get Action Surge. Here’s the logic:
- Warlock 8 gives you Mortal Reminder (level 1) and Entropic Ward (level 6), Pact of the Blade with its Deepened Pact extra attack at Warlock 5, short-rest Pact Magic slots, and the spells that make the build work: Shadow Blade, Darkness, Hunger of Hadar, and Counterspell. Eight levels is the sweet spot; it secures your subclass features and your second attack while leaving four levels for Fighter.
- Fighter 4 (Champion) gives you a Fighting Style (Defence for +1 AC), Action Surge (a second full attack turn), the Champion subclass which lowers your critical-hit threshold so you crit on a wider roll range, and a feat. Champion is the whole reason to go Fighter here: more crits means more Mortal Reminder fear triggers and more Shadow Blade crit spikes.
Why Champion and not more Warlock? Stopping at Warlock 8 costs you Thought Shield and Mystic Arcanum, but Champion’s expanded crit range is worth far more to a crit-fishing build than those features; it converts Mortal Reminder from an occasional proc into a reliable, repeatable control button. Note that because you never take Fighter 5, your only Extra Attack is Pact of the Blade’s Deepened Pact (from Warlock 5); this is fine, since the two do not stack in Honour Mode anyway.
Leveling order: start Warlock at level 1 so Mortal Reminder’s save DC is important. Then, get an early Fighter dip for Action Surge and Defence, then return to Warlock for Pact of the Blade (Warlock 3) and Deepened Pact (Warlock 5), and finish the last two Fighter levels for Champion (Fighter 3) and your final feat.
Action Economy & Buff Stacking

Before combat, after each long rest, cast Shadow Blade and Bind Pact Weapon so it attacks with your Charisma (this is the step you must not forget). Also, make sure to coat your weapon with Oil and drink an Elixir. Next, attack from stealth if you can to trigger the Surprise status effect. If not, cast Hex on the priority target, and if you can, drop Darkness on yourself so you open from inside it with Advantage.
Each turn:
- Bonus Action → move Hex to a fresh target, or re-cast Darkness/reposition.
- Action → two Shadow Blade attacks (Booming Blade on the first, a normal swing on the second), fishing for the Champion-boosted crit that triggers Mortal Reminder.
- Action Surge (Fighter) → a second full attack action; two more Shadow Blade swings, so up to four crit attempts in one turn.
- Reaction → Entropic Ward to make a dangerous attacker miss and hand you Advantage for your next crit attempt.
Your goal is to stand in your Darkness cloud so every swing has Advantage (which stacks crit chance on top of Champion’s expanded range), attack to fish for the crit that frightens the whole pack via Mortal Reminder, and use Action Surge on a tight cluster for four crit rolls at once. Cast Confusion (Dreadful Word) or Hunger of Hadar as a reliable backup control when you want to lock a pack down without waiting on a crit.
Gear Progression Path – The Great Old One Warlock Build

You want crit-chance gear, Charisma, medium armor, and a shield to support a Shadow Blade melee build. Your weapon is the Shadow Blade spell, so weapon slots go to backups; the real damage comes from crit gear plus Champion. The Resonance Stone is a strong optional pickup that doubles your Shadow Blade’s psychic damage.

Key Notes: Diadem of Arcane Synergy seems like an odd gear set, but when you apply Hex, it grants the buff. You can also get some extra damage with Broodmother’s necklace by using a potion to trigger the buff. Both the chest and gloves can be swapped out for something else, but they help your overall damage and performance. Until you get the Shadow Blade spell, use a Longsword with a Shield. Make sure to Bind Pact Weapon, so it scales with your Charisma, NOT Dexterity or Strength.

| Weapon 2 | The Deadshot | Reduces the number needed for a critical hit by 1 | Purchased from Fytz the Firecracker Stormshore Armoury. |
Note: Killer’s Sweetheart plus Risky Ring is the crit-engine core; the Risky Ring’s permanent Advantage makes crits frequent, and Killer’s Sweetheart guarantees one after every kill, so Mortal Reminder’s mass fear fires reliably.
Potions, Elixirs, and Consumables

Only one elixir can be active at a time.
- Elixir of Viciousness or a crit-focused elixir: anything that raises crit chance directly feeds Mortal Reminder.
- Elixir of Bloodlust: an extra action after your first kill; more attacks means more crit-fishing.
- Potion of Speed: an extra action for more crit attempts on a key turn.
- Always carry: scrolls of Darkness (Devil’s Sight Advantage feeds crits) and healing potions.
Illithid Powers and Synergies

- Luck of the Far Realms: force a crit once per long rest; a guaranteed Mortal Reminder trigger on demand, ideal for opening on a tight pack.
- Black Hole: pulls a scattered pack into one 3m cluster so a single crit frightens all of them via Mortal Reminder.
- Cull the Weak: finishing damage that helps trigger Killer’s Sweetheart’s auto-crit loop.
- Fracture Psyche: lowers a target’s saves, making Mortal Reminder’s fear and your Confusion land more reliably.
Permanent Bonus Tracker

Push into Charisma, and grab anything that helps you crit:
| Auntie Ethel’s Hair | 1 | Deal with Auntie Ethel | +1 to a stat; Charisma to round 17 to 18 |
| Mirror of Loss | 3 | Cloister of Sombre Embrace | +2 to a stat; Charisma |
Higher Charisma raises your blast and psychic-spell damage, your spell DC, and the save DC on Mortal Reminder’s fear, so every point makes the whole engine more reliable.
Honour Mode Tips
- Set up your crits before you rely on Mortal Reminder. Open from stealth or inside Darkness (Devil’s Sight) for Advantage, and get the Risky Ring and crit gear online; the engine is unreliable without them.
- Keep Fear prepared as a backup so you can frighten a pack on the turns your crits don’t land.
- Get the Resonance Stone in Act 2 and keep it in your inventory; it doubles all your psychic output.
- Fight from inside your Darkness cloud; with Devil’s Sight, you attack with Advantage while enemies are Blinded, which both protects you and stacks your crit chance for Mortal Reminder.
- Hold concentration on Hex and your control spells with Constitution 15+ and the Amulet of Greater Health.
Party Synergies
The Great Old One frightens and softens the enemy pack; it wants allies who exploit frightened, low-accuracy targets.
- Melee (Lae’zel Fighter): a frightened enemy attacks at Disadvantage and can’t flee, so your melee allies clean up safely.
- A controller (Gale Wizard): stacks more lockdown so the frightened pack stays disabled.
- Rogue Melee (Astarion as Multiclass): Use Astarion Rogue dual-wield for utility and huge sneak attack criticals.
BG3 The Great Old One Warlock Build FAQ
1. Is the Great Old One Warlock good in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Yes; as a melee Shadow Blade build with Champion, it crits often enough that Mortal Reminder’s mass fear is a reliable control button, not a lucky proc. It plays like a Hexblade but frightens whole packs off its crits, which makes it a strong melee crit-fear duelist.
2. Is the Great Old One better than the Hexblade or Archfey?
No; the Hexblade does psychic damage better and the Archfey does control better, so the Great Old One sits between them. Play it for the Mind Flayer fantasy and the crit-fear engine rather than pure optimization.
3. How does Mortal Reminder work in BG3?
When you land a critical hit, the target and every enemy within 3m must make a Wisdom save or be Frightened until the end of their next turn. The save DC uses the spellcasting modifier of your first class, so start Warlock to keep it on Charisma.
4. What’s the best multiclass for a Great Old One?
Fighter 4 (Champion) is the pick; the Champion subclass lowers your crit threshold so Mortal Reminder fires far more often, plus you get Action Surge, a fighting style, and a feat. Warlock 8 keeps Mortal Reminder, Entropic Ward, and Pact of the Blade’s extra attack.
5. Should the Great Old One go melee or caster?
Melee is the stronger engine, and it’s what this build is: a Shadow Blade with Pact of the Blade’s two attacks a turn, boosted by Champion’s crit range, triggers Mortal Reminder far more reliably than spells. A pure caster works but crits too rarely to lean on the fear.
6. Do I need the Resonance Stone?
It’s a strong optional pickup, not a requirement. Shadow Blade deals psychic damage, so the Resonance Stone doubles your weapon hits if you grab it in Act 2; but this build’s damage comes from Champion crits and Mortal Reminder fear, so it works fine without it.
