Latest Update: July 14, 2026 – Categories: Baldur’s Gate 3
Recruited in Act 1, Wyll becomes a powerhouse Warlock multiclassed into Sorcerer to gain better spellcasting, versatility, and more in this Ultimate BG3 build.

Wyll starts as a Fiend Warlock and most players park him at the back, firing the occasional Eldritch Blast. This build makes that his whole identity, turning Wyll into one of the strongest spellcasters in BG3. By multiclassing his Hexblade Warlock into Sorcerer, Wyll becomes a “Sorlock”: he fires Eldritch Blast twice a turn (once as an action, once as a bonus action via Quickened Spell), backed by a full Sorcerer spell list. Fireball, Haste, Counterspell, Ice Storm and more.
It leans further into spellcasting than a melee Hexblade while keeping the Curse and Eldritch Blast that define the class. And because he already has the highest Charisma of any companion, one stat powers his blasts, his spell DCs, and his dialogue, making him a devastating caster and the best party face at the same time. Plus, it’s one of the easiest spellcasters to play: Hex, Eldritch Blast, watch enemies die! Below, we walk you through step-by-step on creating the most powerful Wyll build in BG3.
This build guide is updated for Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8, Community Update #36, Version Number: 4.1.1.7209685.

Wyll Build at a Glance
| Classes | Sorcerer 10 / Warlock (Hexblade) 2 |
| Best Race | Human (fixed: can’t be changed) |
| Key Ability | Charisma |
| Best Feats | Ability Improvement (CHA) |
| Core Combo | Quickened Eldritch Blast (bonus action) + a leveled spell (action) + Hexblade’s Curse |
| Difficulty to Play | 3 / 5 (metamagic and spell management) |
| Shines In | All game; peaks in Act 3 with Metamagic and full spell slots |
Why Use the Wyll Build?

Because a Hexblade Sorlock is arguably the most flexible caster in BG3, and Wyll’s Charisma makes him a natural fit:
- Two Eldritch Blasts a turn. Quickened Spell lets you fire Eldritch Blast as a bonus action and cast a leveled spell (or a second Blast) as your action. With Agonizing Blast adding your Charisma to every beam. That’s a massive amount of Force damage each turn without juggling spell slots.
- A full Sorcerer spell list. Fireball, Haste, Counterspell, Ice Storm: Wyll always has the right tool, backed by Twinned and Quickened metamagic.
- Hexblade’s Curse. A bonus-action curse that adds guaranteed damage, lowers the target’s crit threshold, and heals you on the kill. The perfect tool for opening boss kills.
- Two separate slot pools. Warlock pact slots refresh on a short rest, so your control spells (Hellish Rebuke, Hex) come back between fights while your Sorcerer slots handle the big nukes.
- Best party face. Highest starting Charisma of any companion, proficient in Intimidation and Deception, makes him a great party “face.”
The downside to Wyll is that he’s a squishy, low-AC spellcaster. You must keep him at range and use Misty Step and Thunderwave to avoid early melee pressure.
How to Recruit & Respec Wyll

You will find Wyll intervening during a cutscene as you approach the Emerald Grove in Act 1. Following a fight to enter the Grove, you can then find Wyll training the tiefling children. Talk to him and agree to help, and he will join. (Note the Karlach quest: Wyll is initially sent to kill her.
Once you recruit Wyll, head to your camp to trigger a cutscene if Karlach is in your party. Navigate the situation and make sure they don’t kill each other. Once this is done, use Withers to respec Wyll so you can reset his default class to Sorcerer at level one for Constitution saving-throw proficiency (it protects your concentration).
Key Story: Mizora’s Pact & the Karlach Hunt

Two Wyll-specific things to know:
- The Karlach hunt: Mizora sends Wyll to kill Karlach, whom he believes is a devil. If you want both companions, don’t let him kill her. Instead, meet Karlach, learn the truth, and Wyll will stand down. Handling this well is how you keep a full roster.
- Mizora’s pact: Wyll is bound to the devil Mizora. His questline (through Act 2’s Duke Ravengard rescue and into Act 3) offers a choice about the pact. Because this build keeps his Warlock levels, his pact story stays perfectly consistent, and the choice is narrative, not a build decision. It doesn’t change how he plays mechanically.
Character Creation Selections – Wyll build

| Choice | Selection |
| Character | Wyll |
| Race | Human (fixed) |
| Class | Sorcerer (start here) → Warlock (Hexblade) |
| Subclass | Draconic Bloodline (Sorcerer) · Hexblade (Warlock) |
| Background | Folk Hero (grants Animal Handling & Survival) |
| Ability Scores | STR 8 DEX 14 CON 16 INT 10 WIS 10 CHA 16 |
| Skill Proficiencies | Intimidation, Deception |
Best Race for the Wyll Build
Wyll is locked to Human and can’t be changed, which is perfect for a good caster race. Humans get an extra skill, carrying capacity, and shield proficiency. Therefore, you can equip a shield and a quarterstaff and get extra AC as early as Act 1!
Best Ability Scores (point buy) for Wyll Build

The most important ability is Charisma because it affects spells, dialogue, DC, and overall power for Wyll. Second is Constitution because of saving throws and HP. Having 16 CON helps you hold Wall of Fire, Hold Person, or Darkness. These spells are critical for overall success and with level 1 Sorcerer, you gain proficiency with CON Saves. Next is Dexterity at 14, due to initiative and extra AC in light or cloth. Strength is your dump stat and you can keep Wisdom and Intelligence at 10 for skill checks.
Best Background
Wyll’s background is fixed as a Folk Hero, granting proficiency in Animal Handling and Survival. These are two Wisdom-based skills and not the best, but you cannot change your background with companions.
Best Skills

Take two Charisma-based skills since you have a +3 bonus: Intimidation and Deception are the best.
Leveling Progression – Wyll build

| Level | Class | Selection | Why it Matters |
| 1 | Sorcerer (1) | Draconic Bloodline; Constitution save proficiency Cantrips: Booming Blade, Fire Bolt, Light, Ray of Frost Spells: Chromatic Orb, Magic Missile Draconic Blood, Red (Fire) Ancestry | CON saves protect concentration; Draconic adds HP and AC |
| 2 | Warlock (1) | Hexblade: Hexblade’s Curse, Hex Warrior, Cantrips: Eldritch Blast, Friends Spells: Hex, Hellish Rebuke | The Curse and your signature cantrip come online |
| 3 | Warlock (2) | 2 Invocations: Agonizing Blast + Devil’s Sight Spell: Shield | Agonizing Blast adds Charisma to every Blast beam, the core damage boost |
| 4 | Sorcerer (2) | Metamagic: Twinned Spell, Careful Spell Spells: Thunderwave | Twinned you can fork (2x) Chromatic Orb |
| 5 | Sorcerer (3) | Lvl 2 spells; Sorcery Point growth Spell: Scorching Ray, replace Thunderwave with Darkness Metamagic Quickened Spell | Scorching Ray for single target, Darkness for protection, and Quickened can now use bonus action to cast another spell |
| 6 | Sorcerer (4) | Feat: Ability Improvement (+2 CHA → 18) Cantrip: Bursting Sinew Spell: Misty Step | Bigger blasts, higher DCs |
| 7 | Sorcerer (5) | Lvl 3 spells: Fireball | Your AoE nuke, best buff, and enemy-caster shutdown |
| 8 | Sorcerer (6) | Draconic Resilience / origin feature Spell: Counterspell | More AC and HP |
| 9 | Sorcerer (7) | Lvl 4 spells: Ice Storm | Big AoE and control |
| 10 | Sorcerer (8) | Feat: Ability Improvement (+2 CHA → 20) Spell: Wall of Fire | More damage and AOE Fire spell |
| 11 | Sorcerer (9) | Lvl 5 spells: Cone of Cold | Huge cold AoE |
| 12 | Sorcerer (10) | Cantrip: Mage Hand Spell: Haste, replace Chromatic Orb with Mirror Image Metamagic: Subtle Spell | Full-power caster with a deep slot pool |
Here are the most critical choices for you to pick and why:
- Sorcerer 5: Fireball: Your AoE spell which you can cast with Careful Metamagic and not hit friendlies.
- Warlock 2: Agonizing Blast: Adds your Charisma modifier to every Eldritch Blast beam; without it, EB is mediocre.
- Sorcerer 3: Quickened Spell: Cast Eldritch Blast as a bonus action so you can Blast and drop a leveled spell in the same turn.
Best Spells, Cantrips & Invocations

Cantrips: Eldritch Blast (your primary scales with level and Agonizing Blast), plus utility like Friends.
Spells to prepare by tier:
- Warlock (short-rest slots): Hex, Hellish Rebuke, Shield, Burning Hands
- Sorcerer Lvl 1: Burning Hands, Magic Missile, Chromatic Orb
- Sorcerer Lvl 2: Shield, Darkness, Scorching Ray, Misty Step, Mirror Image
- Sorcerer Lvl 3: Fireball, Haste, Counterspell
- Sorcerer Lvl 4: Ice Storm, Wall of Fire
- Sorcerer Lvl 5: Cone of Cold

Invocations (Warlock 2): Agonizing Blast (Charisma to Blast damage, mandatory) and Devil’s Sight (see in magical Darkness, so you can drop Darkness on enemies and keep firing). Repelling Blast (knockback) is a fine swap if you’d rather control positioning.
Metamagic: Quickened Spell (Blast as a bonus action) is the must-have; Twinned Spell lets you Haste two allies or hit two targets with a single-target spell.
Multiclass Options

Sorcerer 10 / Warlock (Hexblade) 2 is the meta spellcaster split: full Sorcerer progression (level-5 spells, two metamagics, big slot pool) with just enough Warlock for Eldritch Blast, Agonizing Blast, Devil’s Sight, and Hexblade’s Curse.
Sorcerer 11 / Warlock 1 trades the second invocation for a higher Sorcerer ceiling (level-6 spells). Take this route if you value raw spell power over Agonizing Blast (though you lose the Charisma-to-Blast bonus, so most players prefer the 10/2).
Warlock 6 / Sorcerer 6 is the more Warlock-flavored, control-leaning alternative. You gain more invocations and short-rest slots and fewer high-level Sorcerer spells. Withers respecs for 100 gold if you want to compare.
Action Economy & Buff Stacking
Before combat: Pre-buff with Mirror Image and Blur (scroll) and make sure to take an elixir like Bloodlust. Generate Sorcery Points and prepare to cast Darkness on yourself (which you can see through) as another layer of protection. Just before combat, you can Twinned Spell Haste and cast it on yourself and a melee character for double actions! Just remember you cannot use both Darkness and Haste, so use one offensively and the other defensively.
Turn One:
- Action → a leveled spell (Fireball, Ice Storm) or Eldritch Blast.
- Bonus Action → Quickened Eldritch Blast, or Hexblade’s Curse on a priority target (turn one).
- Reaction → Shield (+5 AC) or Counterspell to deny an enemy spell.
Concentration discipline: hold one concentration spell, Haste on your best martial is often the top play, while Darkness can end a fight.
Gear Progression Path – Wyll build

A ranged caster wants Charisma, spell save DC, and concentration protection. He wears clothing/light armour. You don’t need Mage Armor because of the Sorcerer subclass choice. Thus, even in clothing, don’t worry about it.

Combat and Gameplay Strategy (Act 1-3)
Early Game Strategy (Act 1)
Play from range behind your frontline. Chip away HP with Eldritch Blast to save slots, and open tough fights with Hexblade’s Curse for burst and a lower crit threshold. Keep Shield ready as a reaction, and grab Darkness spell for defensive cloud and the Spellsparkler so your AC and concentration are respectable.
Mid-Game Strategy (Act 2)
With Quickened Spell and Fireball online, your turns much more powerful. Open with a Fireball as your action, Quickened Eldritch Blast as your bonus action. Drop Darkness (with Devil’s Sight) to blind enemy ranged units while you keep firing. Counterspell shuts down Act 2’s many enemy casters.
Late Game Strategy (Act 3)
With the “of the Weave” gear, the Potent Robe, and Markoheshkir, Wyll is a per-turn damage machine: Hexblade’s Curse the boss, then Quickened Eldritch Blast (three beams, each with Charisma from Agonizing Blast and the Potent Robe) plus a maximized spell. Save Twinned Haste for two allies and Darkness for defensive utility.
Potions, Elixirs, and Consumables

- Elixir of Vigilance: +5 initiative and no Surprise, so you nuke first.
- Superior Elixir of Arcane Cultivation: an extra level-3 slot (one more Fireball or Haste).
- Potion of Speed: cast two big spells in one turn.
- Always carry: spell scrolls and a few healing potions since he’s fragile.
Illithid Powers and Synergies
Tadpole (Illithid) powers are optional. They won’t change your companion’s story but will change their appearance. If combat power is your priority, you should consume them or have your main character take them and use Black Hole to cluster enemies.
- Black Hole: pull a pack into one spot, then Fireball or Eldritch Blast the cluster.
- Favourable Beginnings: Advantage on your opening spell each fight.
- Luck of the Far Realms: force a crit on a key Eldritch Blast or spell.
- Fly: clean lines of sight and distance from melee.
Party Synergies
Wyll is your AOE spellcaster. He wants a frontline to protect him and a great Haste target:
- A frontliner (Lae’zel, Karlach): holds the line and loves a Haste from Wyll.
- Support Build (Shadowheart): Support class that heals, buffs, and debuffs enemies.
- A striker (Astarion): Use as a dual-wielding melee Rogue that focuses on single-target burst.
FAQs about the Wyll Build
Should I start as Warlock or Sorcerer?
Start as Sorcerer, even though two Warlock levels are stronger in isolation at level 1–2. Your starting class permanently sets your saving throw proficiencies, and you can never gain them later by multiclassing. Starting Sorcerer grants Constitution save proficiency, which protects Concentration.
Starting Warlock would give you Wisdom saves and light armour instead; the armour is moot (Hexblade grants medium armour regardless of your starting class, and the best-in-slot chest is the Potent Robe, which isn’t armour). In practice you lose nothing: Wyll joins around level 3 and you respec at Withers, so Sorcerer 1 and both Warlock levels get assigned at once and Agonising Blast is online immediately.
What’s the best build for Wyll?
A Hexblade Sorlock, Sorcerer 10 / Warlock (Hexblade) 2. It fires Eldritch Blast twice a turn and backs it with a full Sorcerer spell list.
Fiend or Hexblade for Wyll?
Hexblade for this caster build, Hexblade’s Curse adds burst and easy crits, and the Sorcerer levels supply the spellcasting. Fiend’s Dark One’s Blessing is better for a pure melee Warlock.
Should I respec Wyll?
Yes, from Fiend Warlock into the Sorlock. Take his first level in Sorcerer for Constitution save proficiency.
What are the best feats for Wyll?
Ability Improvement to max Charisma, then Alert for better initiative.
Do I lose Wyll’s story if I multiclass him into Sorcerer?
No, he keeps his Warlock levels, so his pact with Mizora and all his story beats stay consistent.
How do I keep both Wyll and Karlach?
Don’t let Wyll kill Karlach when Mizora sends him after her. Meet Karlach first and he’ll stand down.
