Why Play the BG3 Oathbreaker Paladin Build?

You have broken your sacred Oath in pursuit of power and ambition. Only darkness remains to fuel you now.
The Oathbreaker Paladin is perfect for players who want to lean into a morally grey (or fully evil) roleplay experience while still remaining a powerful frontline force. As a fallen paladin, the Oathbreaker stands out among standard paladin subclasses for its unique blend of darkness, corruption, and the potential for redemption. Combined with Warlock levels, this hidden subclass build becomes an ultra-powerful melee and ranged damage dealer. Moreover, you can combine it with the Dark Urge origin story and get special cut scenes and details from the normal Tav. Essentially, you play as a dark side evil Paladin with some of the best all around abilities in BG3. One of the key reasons to play this build is the signature Spiteful Suffering ability, which greatly enhances your damage output.
The downside to the Paladin is they start slow, can be complex, and the Oathbreaker isn’t a subclass you just select at level 1. You must first break your sacred oath to become an Oathbreaker, at which point you gain access to new, powerful abilities unique to this path. Will walk you through the important steps and mitigate some of the Oathbreaker’s issues. This build is capable of beating honour mode in the right hands!
BG3 Oathbreaker Paladin Build Character Creation
The first important choice to make with your build is the “Origin Story.” Normally, players select Tav, which is the base story without changes. However, for a great dark and twisted experience select Dark Urge. There’s a performance benefit as well, because you get a cloak in Act 1 that gives you invisibility after a kill!

The next decision is your race choice. Half-Orc is the best because it gets a bonus to critical damage, giving you the most burst possible. Moreover, you get another bonus when you reach zero HP that puts you at one. And if that weren’t enough, you get intimidate skill automatically. High Half-Elf is also good for spellcasters with one extra cantrip and Asmodeus Tiefling another balanced choice. The Wood Half-Elf is also worth considering, as it offers unique features like darkvision, which can be very useful in low-light environments.

For classes, we are going to use 9 Paladin and 3 Warlock rather than a single class. In fact, we suggest starting as a Warlock and forgoing the need for Heavy Armour. The reason being, at end game, you are likely to use light (Bhaalist) or medium (armour of agility). With higher AC and Dexterity, you won’t suffer from lower survivability. The Hexblade Warlock starts off MUCH faster than the Paladin so you won’t be struggling at lower levels. Do three Warlock, then transition to Paladin. Select Vengeance as your subclass which you can break shortly thereafter by committing certain actions such as killing a random NPC or lying on a quest.

For ability score, do not stack strength, even on a melee build. The Hexblade Warlock as the ability to “bind pact weapon.” This allows you to use only Charisma for weapon scaling, and thus get much higher dexterity and constitution because of it. This alone makes you more powerful than other hybrid builds, so while it seems odd, stack Charisma. If you do 17 charisma, you must get Auntie Ethel’s hair before moving on from Act 1 to even out the number. Higher Constitution and Wisdom scores will also improve your constitution saving throw and wisdom saving throw, which are crucial for resisting spells and maintaining concentration on important spell effects. Distributing your ability points effectively during character creation and leveling is crucial for optimizing your Oathbreaker Paladin build, as proper allocation directly impacts your gameplay performance and overall build effectiveness.
As a Baldur’s Gate 3 Paladin, you also gain access to Divine Sense as a bonus action at Paladin Level 1. This ability provides a tactical advantage in early encounters by granting you an advantage on attack rolls against Undead and Fiends.
When choosing feats, consider the option to take Ability Improvement to further boost your core stats, especially if you want to maximize your spellcasting abilities or increase your main attributes for better combat effectiveness.
Below is the summarized version:

Paladin Class Features

The paladin class in Baldur’s Gate 3 stands out as one of the most versatile and resilient options for players who want to dominate the front lines while supporting their party. One of the defining features of the paladin class is its access to powerful smite spells. With every melee weapon attack, you have the option to expend a spell slot to unleash Divine Smite, adding a burst of radiant damage that can turn the tide of battle, especially when you land a critical hit. This makes paladins exceptional at finishing off dangerous enemies and dealing massive damage in melee range.

Paladins also gain access to a variety of fighting styles at early levels, allowing you to tailor your approach to combat. Whether you prefer the Defense Fighting Style for extra survivability or Great Weapon Fighting for increased damage with a two handed melee weapon, your choices here help define your role on the battlefield.
Spellcasting is another key aspect of the paladin class. While you won’t have as many spell slots as a dedicated caster, your prepared spells offer a mix of healing, buffs, and control options. Spells like Shield of Faith, Command, and Searing Smite let you protect allies, disrupt enemy plans, and add elemental weapon effects to your attacks. Your spell slots are also crucial for activating your most powerful smite spells, so managing them wisely is essential.

Channel Oath abilities are unique to each paladin subclass, providing powerful effects that can frighten nearby enemies, heal party members, or control undead foes. These abilities, combined with your auras such as Aura of Protection and Aura of Hate grant passive bonuses to saving throws, damage, and more for both you and your nearby allies.

With extra attack at higher levels, the Paladin class can make multiple weapon attacks per turn, further increasing its damage output. Combined with features like Lay on Hands for emergency healing and high constitution saving throw proficiency, paladins are built to withstand punishment and keep fighting when others would fall.
In short, the paladin class in Baldur’s Gate 3 is the ultimate blend of offense, defense, and utility. Whether you’re smiting foes, shielding your party, or controlling the flow of battle with your channel oath abilities, you’ll always have the tools you need to adapt and overcome any challenge.
Leveling Choices – Oathbreaker Paladin

For leveling the Oathbreaker, take the Hexblade Warlock at first. The reason why, the Hexblade starts extremely strong. You have both range, melee attacks without the need for constant rest and zero mobility You will miss out on heavy armour, but end-game builds don’’t use it anyways. Booming Blade can be combined with Divine Smite later, so make sure to take this cantrip. Divine Smite is triggered on a melee weapon attack, so maximizing your melee damage is key to this build. Set Divine Smite to “Ask” in reactions to burst damage on critical hits for optimal output. Certain spells and gear can provide bonus damage, increasing your overall output—look for weapons or abilities that add extra effects or scale with your ability points. Rely on Eldritch Blast early when you run out of spell slots.

At level 2, make sure to grab Devil’s Sight because you can use the Darkness spell and see through it! This can restrict enemy ranged attacks and give you a tactical advantage. Additionally, certain spells or abilities can help you gain advantage on attack rolls or saving throws, giving you a crucial edge in tough battles. Moreover, you can summon Shadow Blade and use a shield if you want to play a tanky style, but it’s still advised to use a two handed melee weapon like greatswords or Nyrluna at end game for maximum melee damage. The Great Weapon Master feat synergizes well with this style, letting you deal more damage with heavy weapons. Pact of the Blade boon and Bind Hex Weapon allows you to use your Charisma modifier, not Strength, to increase damage with attacks, therefore forgo strength.
At level four, multiclass to Paladin. You won’t find the Oathbreaker on the list of subclasses, so take Vengeance. We explain how to break your Oath below to unlock the subclass. Level 5 you have tons of choices, and we suggest using the two-handed greatsword build with medium and eventually light armour. This setup has the most damage potential, especially if using the cloak from Dark Origin story. Consider the Defense Fighting Style for extra AC, or Great Weapon Fighting to further boost your melee damage output.
For feat choices, take +2 Charisma and Savage Attacker. Savage Attacker is highly recommended for rerolling melee damage dice for Oathbreaker Paladins, increasing your consistency and burst potential. This will make your burst with melee weapon attacks incredible, plus great spellcasting damage as well. The Great Weapon Master feat is a top choice for maximizing melee damage, as it allows a bonus attack after a critical hit or killing an enemy with a heavy weapon. It also lets you trade attack roll accuracy for extra damage, so time your attacks for the best effect. The most important spells for stunning enemies is Command, and use Thunderous Smite from stealth to trigger surprise status effect.
When selecting spells, pay attention to your prepared spells and oath spells, as choosing the right ones can greatly improve your effectiveness in combat and utility. Oath spells are subclass-specific and provide unique tactical options. Managing concentration spells is crucial, as maintaining these effects can control the battlefield and maximize your Paladin’s utility. Channel Oath abilities are also important class features, granting you unique powers that can turn the tide of battle.
For gear and equipment, don’t neglect ranged weapons. Having a bow or crossbow can let you make ranged attacks when you can’t reach enemies in melee, supplementing your primary combat style. When choosing gear and feats, prioritize those that optimize your attack and damage rolls to maximize your combat effectiveness.
When allocating stats, prioritize your Charisma modifier, as it boosts both your spellcasting and many class abilities, including damage and saving throw bonuses.
Mobility is key in combat, so consider items or buffs that increase your movement speed to improve your positioning and tactical options. Misty Step is essential for closing the distance to targets, letting you engage enemies quickly or escape danger.
Pay attention to saving throws – Constitution and Wisdom are especially important for resisting harmful effects. Items or features that boost your saving throw rolls can greatly improve your survivability.
For damage types, note that some spells or items can add fire damage to your attacks, or help you resist fire-based effects.
Certain items or features can make your weapon attacks deal extra damage, such as adding radiant or elemental effects. In combat, focus on hitting enemies consistently. Buffs or features that improve your attack roll, like Bless, can make a big difference in your overall effectiveness. To maximize Aura of Hate, Oathbreaker Paladins should position themselves near their summoned undead, ensuring both you and your minions benefit from the bonus damage.

Best Gear for Oathbreaker Paladin Build
The most important part of the gear combination in the late games is Nyrulna Trident and Bhaalist Armour. When standing in three meter range, you double piercing damage, and Nyrulna is piercing and it can be wielded with one or two hands. Therefore, you can play one hand and shield for higher AC, oor as a two handed weapon for all out damage. Some magical items, like the Mantle of the Holy Warrior, can make your weapon attacks deal extra radiant damage, further boosting your output. Additionally, certain auras or support gear provide passive bonuses to nearby allies, increasing their survivability and effectiveness in close proximity. Potions and consumables, such as the Potion of Speed, are also valuable as they can grant advantage on Dexterity Saving Throws, helping you avoid damage or negative effects during challenging encounters.
Finesse weapons are also a viable option for Oathbreaker Paladins who want to leverage Dexterity or Charisma for attack rolls, offering more versatility in combat and accommodating different playstyles.
In the early game, steal Lae’zel’s armor and equip it. Look for low HP targets and kill them to trigger Deathstalker Mantle invisibility. Spend time in Gyrmforg to craft Adamantine Scale Mail as it will carry you chest piece for many hours. Moreover, look for anything early that increases overall movement or gives free Misty Step. Mobility will be your biggest weakness early. Some gear or spells can also create magical darkness, which can be used strategically to obscure vision and control the battlefield.
In Act 3, do the evil questlines specifically exploring Bhaalist Cultist meeting Sarveok. You need to side with “team” evil to get the best gear, but it’s well worth it. Also, don’t forgot that your ranged weapon isn’t to be used but serves just to buff you. With high initiative, the Hellrider Longbow makes you go sooner in turn order. Thus, you can kill an entire team in one turn before they can attack! If you encounter a humanoid enemy, consider using spells or gear that are especially effective against them, such as those that can charm or control their actions.

Key Abilities & Combos

The most critical part of the build is melee attack with Booming Blade cantrip and Divine Smite. Divine Smite’s extra damage, especially when combined with features like Improved Divine Smite, significantly boosts your overall damage output by adding additional radiant damage on each hit. Summoned or controlled undead can fight alongside you, providing additional support and tactical options in combat. Divine Smite can be found in your reactions, though you can cast it manually. You want to make sure it checks with you before burning a spell slot. You don’t need to nuke a level 2 mob with a level 3 precious spell slot, so only hit yes when you need the extra burst damage.
Also, remember you can control undead enemies with Oathbreaker subclass spells. Right click and examine the enemy if you don’t know the type and take control if it’s easier than killing them outright. Always apply your aura once you unlock them at level 6 as it wont’ automatically turn on.
Use your bonus action for spells like Misty Step to close the distance, and equip gear pieces or scrolls so you gain extra mobility. If you cannot reach the target, Eldritch Blast cantrip is a safe play to get some extra damage. Eldritch Blast enables effective ranged combat, allowing you to deal high damage from a distance when you can’t engage in melee. Hex them with a bonus action before hand to get some extra damage if you unlocked that spell.
Spell Slots and Prepared Spells for Oathbreaker Paladin
Managing your spell slots and choosing the right prepared spells is key to unlocking the full potential of the Oathbreaker Paladin in Baldur’s Gate 3. As you level up, you’ll gain access to more spell slots, allowing you to prepare a versatile arsenal of spells that enhance your melee attacks and provide crucial battlefield control.

For your prepared spells, prioritize those that synergize with your melee playstyle. Divine Smite is a must-have, letting you convert spell slots into extra radiant damage on a melee weapon attack, perfect for landing critical hits or finishing off tough foes. Inflict Wounds is another decent spell, offering high burst damage when you need to take down a dangerous enemy quickly. Spells like Hellish Rebuke provide reactive damage when you’re hit, while Command and Wrathful Smite give you tools to control enemy actions and disrupt their plans.

As an Oathbreaker Paladin, you’ll also gain access to unique spells like Control Undead and Dreadful Aspect, which can turn the tide of battle by dominating undead enemies or frightening nearby foes. Make sure to balance your prepared spells between offensive options, crowd control, and utility to adapt to any situation. With Aura Of Hate all nearby undead gain additional damage with melee weapons, equal to the Charisma modifier of the Paladin.
- Dreadful Aspect: Let your darkest emotions burst forth as a menacing pulse to Frighten Frighten nearby enemies.
- Control Undead: Use the power of your Oath to gain control over an undead creature. The undead will follow you around and attack your enemies.
Careful management of your spell slots is essential! Don’t burn through them too quickly, and always keep a few in reserve for clutch moments or powerful smite spells. By selecting the right prepared spells and using your spell slots strategically, your Oathbreaker Paladin will be a force to be reckoned with, combining devastating melee attacks with potent magical effects.
Oathbreaker Paladin Early Game Strategies
The Goblin Camp is one of the earliest challenges in Baldur’s Gate 3, and navigating it successfully can set the tone for the rest of the game. For an Oathbreaker Paladin, this area presents an opportunity to test melee attacks and spellcasting abilities in a relatively controlled environment.
As you approach the Goblin Camp, prioritize using your melee weapon attacks to quickly dispatch isolated goblins and thin out their numbers before larger fights break out. The Oathbreaker Paladin excels in melee range, so look for opportunities to engage enemies one-on-one or in small groups, where your high armour class and access to Divine Smite can make a significant impact. Don’t hesitate to use your spell slots for smite spells like Thunderous Smite or Wrathful Smite.
When facing groups of goblins, use your bonus actions wisely. Spells like Command can force enemies to drop their weapons or flee, giving you and your party members a tactical advantage. If you’ve already unlocked Dreadful Aspect, use it to frighten nearby enemies, reducing incoming damage and making it easier to land critical hits with your melee weapon. Remember, positioning is key: try to funnel goblins into chokepoints where your melee attacks and auras can affect multiple targets at once.
If you encounter undead creatures in or around the camp, take advantage of your Control Undead ability to gain control of them, turning potential threats into temporary allies. This not only adds to your party’s firepower but also helps you manage the camp’s chaotic skirmishes.
Oathbreaker Paladin Combat Tactics
The Oathbreaker Paladin truly excels when positioned strategically within melee combat range, effectively utilizing your weapon attacks enhanced by both righteous fury and dark power mechanics. To maximize combat effectiveness from your melee weapon attacks, positioning becomes critical – this tactical approach allows you to optimize your attack frequency while leveraging your high Charisma modifier for substantial melee weapon damage bonuses. When engaging enemy targets at close range, the Divine Smite ability provides exceptional burst potential, adding significant radiant damage to your weapon strikes. Note that this damage bonus becomes particularly devastating when combined with critical hit mechanics, effectively doubling your combat impact per successful strike.
Your Channel Oath abilities represent game-changing tactical options during combat encounters. The Control Undead ability functions as a force multiplier, converting hostile undead enemies into allied units that fight alongside your party. This effectively shifts battlefield numbers in your favor while providing additional combat support. Your Aura of Hate serves as another cornerstone feature, providing substantial melee weapon damage increases for both your character and nearby allied party members. This aura effect transforms your entire group into a formidable close-quarters combat force, with damage bonuses applying consistently as long as proximity requirements are maintained.
Aura of Hate and Combat
Aura of Hate serves as the cornerstone ability that effectively makes the Oathbreaker Paladin build a devastating force compared to other paladin subclasses available in the game. This powerful class feature provides a significant damage bonus by adding your full Charisma modifier to every single melee weapon attack for both you and all nearby allied companions within the aura’s radius. To maximize this combat effectiveness, players must prioritize increasing their Charisma score through strategic ability score improvements and carefully selected gear optimization—note that every single point invested in Charisma directly translates to increased melee weapon damage output for your entire party.
In active combat encounters, the optimal strategy involves combining Aura of Hate with high-damage spell abilities such as Searing Smite or Inflict Wounds to create devastating damage stacking on your melee weapon strikes. When facing humanoid enemy types, players should utilize Dreadful Aspect to apply the frightened condition, which effectively makes these targets significantly more vulnerable to coordinated attacks from your entire adventuring party. This synergistic combination of your aura ability, melee weapon combat, and spellcasting mechanics creates a relentless offensive capability that positions the Oathbreaker Paladin as a dominant battlefield presence.
Oathbreaker Paladin Honor Mode Tips
The biggest tip for honour mode is pre-buffing before you enter combat and triggering surprise status effect. Take your time to get in stealth, apply oils to your weapon (oil of accuracy early), consume elixirs like blood lust, and craft a ton of potion of speed to get extra actions. Then, in turn base mode, use a support character to cast Bless and other buffs before you attack. You can stack Blur with Mirror Image for super hard fights, just use scrolls in turn base mode, then turn off as you approach to start combat.
The second part of the tip is while in stealth, in turn base mode, initiate combat at range. Ideally, a Gloom Stalker ranger is best for this because they can trigger surprise. This means, you get an entire turn of damage before the enemy takes a turn. Memorizing the battles can be tricky and this doesn’t work on all the fights, but even boss fights it does.
Again, take your time and spell a lot of time preparing, buffing, and entering stealth with surprise. Every fight could be your last so a 10 minute rest, buff, sneaking rotation is the difference between winning and losing.
How to Become an Oatbhreaker Paladin in BG3?
Becoming an Oathbreaker Paladin in Baldur’s Gate 3 is a unique journey that starts with your choices during character creation and continues with your actions in the game world. Begin by creating a Paladin and selecting your preferred subclass. Oath of Devotion is a common choice for those looking to break their oath quickly. Once in the game, you’ll need to violate your oath by committing acts that go against your Paladin’s code, such as attacking or killing innocent NPCs. For example, targeting the Tieflings holding Lae’zel hostage or harming other non-hostile characters will trigger the oath-breaking event.
After you break your oath, you’ll receive an in-game notification, and the mysterious Oathbreaker Knight will appear in your camp the next time you rest. Speak with the Oathbreaker Knight to embrace your new path as a fallen paladin. This unlocks the Oathbreaker subclass, granting you powerful new abilities like Control Undead which lets you gain control over undead creatures and Dreadful Aspect, which can frighten nearby enemies and give you a tactical edge in combat.
Choosing the Oathbreaker path opens up a more morally flexible playstyle, allowing you to explore the darker side of the Paladin class. You’ll gain access to unique spells and features that enhance your melee attacks and battlefield control, making your Oathbreaker Paladin a formidable presence in any party. This route also offers rich roleplaying opportunities, letting you shape your character’s story as a fallen paladin navigating the consequences of their choices in Baldur’s Gate 3.
How to Break Your Oath
To trigger the Oathbreaker path, perform an action that violates your Oath’s code. Some examples include:
- Oath of Devotion: Kill a surrendering NPC or commit an act of cruelty.
- Oath of the Ancients: Harm nature, attack peaceful creatures, or support evil-aligned forces.
- Oath of Vengeance: Show mercy to someone you vowed to punish or let evil go unpunished.
After violating your Oath, you’ll see a notification saying you’ve broken it. The Oathbreaker Knight will appear at your camp the next time you Long Rest. You then speak to the Oathbreaker Knight and either accept or refuse the oath. Obviously for this guide accept, which will then unlock the subclass for you and the new powers.
How to Drop the Oathbreaker Subclass and Redeem Your Oath
You can return to your original Paladin Oath by redeeming yourself through the Oathbreaker Knight. This is possible in any Act, with increasing cost and narrative impact as you progress.
Act 1
- Go to Camp after becoming an Oathbreaker.
- Speak to the Oathbreaker Knight and choose to atone.
- Cost: 1,000 gold.
- You’ll return to your original subclass (Devotion, Ancients, or Vengeance) with all subclass features restored.
- Pro Tip: This is the best time to experiment. You can easily swap to Oathbreaker and back without lasting consequences. After 1 one, it becomes MUCH harder to reverse course. Multiple playthroughs we could not get Oathbreaker in Act 3 so be careful (was previously bugged).
Act 2
- The Oathbreaker Knight remains available at your camp.
- You can still redeem yourself and revert to your original Oath.
- Cost: Still around 1,000 gold, but the narrative tone becomes more serious.
- Tip: Some companions may react to your darker path. Switching back can help maintain approval or avoid roleplay conflicts.
Act 3
- You can still atone through the Oathbreaker Knight at camp.
- Cost: Typically higher—around 2,000 gold or more.
- Important: By this point, major story decisions may hinge on your alignment and moral compass. Redeeming your Oath could shift character dialogue and ending slides.
- Warning: If you’re deep into a villainous route or embracing darker powers, switching back might feel narratively jarring.

Illithid Powers and Synergies
Illithid Powers are granted by consuming Tadpoles found throughout the game beginning in Act 1. There are no significant negative impacts to your character’s story ending from consuming them, though consuming the Astral-Touched Tadpole will alter your appearance and affect your epilogue and companion relationships. For maximum combat power, consuming tadpoles and seeking out Illithid powers is near-mandatory, as the bonuses they provide are substantial and stack directly with the Oathbreaker’s existing toolkit.
Tier 1: The Essentials (Prioritize First)
Luck of the Far Realms is the single most impactful power for this build. Once per long rest, when you land a successful attack roll, you can convert it into a critical hit. For an Oathbreaker Paladin with Divine Smite active and Aura of Hate buffing your melee damage, a guaranteed critical hit at the right moment doubles all of your damage dice simultaneously, including your smite. Combined with the Killer’s Sweetheart ring and Half-Orc’s Savage Attacks racial bonus, a single forced critical hit can produce some of the highest single-strike damage numbers available in the game.
Favourable Beginnings ensures your first attack roll against any new target gains a bonus equal to your proficiency bonus. This directly compensates for turns where you cannot gain advantage through Darkness or stealth, keeping your opening strikes reliable even without your defensive setup fully online.
Cull of the Weak executes enemies whose remaining HP falls below your number of evolved Illithid powers, dealing 1 to 4 Psychic damage to nearby targets on death. As a melee build that attacks multiple times per turn with Extra Attack, Divine Smite, and Booming Blade, you will frequently leave enemies on low HP. Cull of the Weak converts those near-kills into automatic kills and frees your next attack for a fresh target, which directly feeds the Elixir of Bloodlust’s kill-trigger for an extra action.
Tier 2: Combat Utility
Ability Drain reduces the target’s corresponding ability score by 1 on each hit. Against boss enemies you intend to fight over multiple turns, stacking Strength or Dexterity drain reduces their attack rolls and saving throws simultaneously, making your Dreadful Aspect more likely to land and your Aura of Hate-buffed undead more likely to hit.
Psionic Backlash deals 1d4 Psychic damage per spell level when an enemy casts a spell within 9 meters of you as a reaction. As a frontline melee character who regularly stands next to enemy casters, this punishes spellcasting attempts before they resolve and can break concentration on dangerous debuffs before your party is affected.
Shield of Thralls conjures a volatile shield on yourself or an ally granting 10 temporary HP that potentially stuns nearby enemies if broken. For an Oathbreaker standing in the middle of a group applying Aura of Hate, this additional defensive layer protects concentration on critical spells and punishes enemies who break through your defenses.
Tier 3: High-Tier Mastery (Astral Tadpole Required)
Black Hole pulls all nearby enemies into a single point and potentially slows them. This is the perfect setup action for an Oathbreaker whose primary value scales with how many enemies are within melee range of your Aura of Hate. Cluster five enemies together, then attack into the group with Nyrulna or Balduran’s Giantslayer to apply your full damage stack to multiple targets in sequence.
Fly grants aerial movement as part of your turn. The Oathbreaker’s largest early and mid-game weakness is mobility, and Fly eliminates the need to spend spell slots on Misty Step or bonus actions on repositioning. Reaching backline casters or elevated enemies without wasting your action economy directly translates into more attacks and more Divine Smite opportunities per encounter.
Pro Tip: Prioritize unlocking Awakened at the Githyanki Crèche in Act 1, which allows you to activate Illithid powers as a bonus action instead of a main action. Once Awakened, you can use Cull of the Weak or Luck of the Far Realms without sacrificing your attack action, effectively making your Illithid powers free additions to an already loaded turn.
