Sorcerer Class Overview
The Sorcerer is one of the four base classes in The Elder Scrolls Online. Typically, players consider Sorc to be only useful for DPS, but that’s not true. The Sorcerer’s kit has everything a tank needs: resistances, survivability, and resource sustain. Additionally, ESO added subclassing too, so now players can add a skill line from another class to fill in any missing skills.
The major issue you will face with the Sorcerer is sourcing buffs and debuffs. However, you can do this via world or weapon skills to fill in the gaps.
Sorcerer Tank Primary Sets
We opt for a double Frost Staff setup because Sorcerer has great built-in block mitigation thanks to Bound Aegis, making One Hand And Shield passives a little redundant. This is the preferred weapon choice for Veteran Trials and optimized groups, as it allows staying at range in certain fights to bypass mechanics, like in Sunspire, and maximizes debuff uptimes for increased group damage output. Finally, the staves also align visually with the war mage aesthetic of the class.
Our first 5-piece set on this build is Perfected Pearlescent Ward, a heavy armor set found in Veteran Dreadsail Reef. This set is extremely powerful as it buffs the group’s Weapon and Spell Damage and makes us extremely tanky. The latter can be particularly useful when trying to recover from group member deaths. Remember that you can also get the non-Perfected version of this set by running the Trial in Normal —1206 Health is all you will miss out on. If you plan on playing a Tank in ESO, this is a set that is really worth collecting.
Next, Perfected Saxhleel Champion, obtainable in Veteran Rockgrove, is another staple for Tanking. When activating our Ultimate, the group gains Major Force, increasing Critical Damage by 20%. This set allows us to use Summon Charged Atronach instead of Aggressive Horn, providing Major Berserk to the group for a 10% increase on all damage done. These two effects are among the strongest damage buffs available in the game. Remember that you can also get the non-Perfected version of this set by running the Trial in Normal —1096 Stamina is all you will miss out on.
Our Monster Set, Archdruid Devyric, can be acquired in Veteran Earthen Root Enclave. With a simple Heavy Attack (doesn’t need to be fully-charged), this set applies Major Vulnerability, increasing enemies’ damage taken by 10%. This combination of sets makes us a formidable damage-boosting powerhouse in both Dungeons and Trials, significantly speeding up encounters.

This effect can occur once every 15 seconds and scales off the higher of your Weapon or Spell Damage.
Sorcerer Tank Alternative Sets
For our alternative sets, our first five-piece set on this build is Crimson Oath’s Rive, a heavy armor set from The Dread Cellar that provides a substantial armor reduction to surrounding enemies with an easy proc condition. This greatly increases damage output by helping DPS players reach the 18,200 Penetration cap, especially those in medium armor or in Dungeons where fewer buffs are present. Crimson Oath’s Rive is definitely a must-collect for Tanking in ESO, especially if you plan to Off-Tank Veteran Hard-Mode Trials.
Next, Turning Tide, found in Shipwright’s Regret, is another staple for Tanking. When you block, your next Bash applies Major Vulnerability, increasing the enemies’ damage taken by 10% for 10 seconds. This set almost always finds itself on Tank builds.
Finally, our Monster Set, Baron Zaudrus, can be acquired in one of the easiest DLC Dungeons, The Cauldron. Given our variety of damage types and the Charged trait on a two-handed weapon, all our status effects rapidly build the set’s stacks, enabling excellent Ultimate generation.
Other very easy-to-get monster set alternatives are Lord Warden for group tankiness and Engine Guardian for sustain. Both can be obtained from base-game Dungeons.

Best Arcanist Tank Attributes
In ESO, having Max health is the most important for a tank. Therefore use all 64 attribute points into health. Anything in the range of 35,000 to 40,000 Health should be more than enough for most content. Depending on your Race passives you may need to put all Attribute points into Health to achieve this value. If you have extra Attribute Points to spare you may distribute them to Magicka and Stamina.
Secondly, you will need stamina as the next highest resource. ESO uses a hybrid system where synergies will restore resources based on your HIGHEST stat. Therefore, you block with stamina, and you want to restore stamina when using synergies. Make sure it’s slightly higher than magicka, you can use one or more glyphs or redistribute attributes slightly depending on your race choice.
0 Magicka
64 Health
0 Stamina
Sorcerer Tank Race
Nord reigns as the top Tank race in ESO, principally thanks to the Rugged passive, which facilitates reaching the 33,100 Resistance cap. The passive alone translates to 7% damage mitigation, crucial for challenging encounters. Additionally, Nord’s boast big Health and Stamina pools along with increased Ultimate-generation. Pick Nord if you care about performance and optimization.
Pick a race that compliments your build and your end goal with the character. If you intend to swap back and forth between healing, damage, and tanking then your racial selection could change.
Other race considerations for tanking:
- Imperial: best raw stats due to 2,000 max health and stamina plus reduces all your ability cost by 6%!
- Orc: adds max health, max stamina, and movement speed plus weapon and spell damage, good if you intend to PvP with character.
- Redguard: incredible stamina sustain but lacks max health.
- Dark Elf: Adds magicka and stamina, fire resist and weapon and spell damage, good if you like to DPS and tank with one character.
- Argonian: adds max health, stamia, magicka, healing done, and resources resourcse when you drink a potion, ideal if you want to tank or heal with one character.
For more details on all ESO Races and passive bonuses be sure to check out our Full ESO Race Guide.
Best Sorcerer Tank Mundus Stones
The best Mundus Stone for a Tank is the Atronach due to the increase in magicka regeneration. This might seem odd, but at a high level in tanking, you use Magicka for skills and Stamina for blocking. Therefore, if you run out, there goes your ability to cast skills, buff allies, and taunt. Below are some other helpful choices in Mundus Stone:
- The Lady: increases resistance, good if below 30,000 buffed with Major Resolve active.
- The Lord: increases max health, good depending on your race if you cannot reach 30,000 health.
Best Sorcerer Tank Food and Drink Buff
The best food for a tank is Bewitched Sugar Skulls because it increases all three stat pools. Make sure your stamina is higher than Magicka so synergies restore stamina. An alternative to Bewitched Sugar Skulls is Longfin Pasty with Melon Sauce. This is purple quality, cheaper, same buff to three stat pools just cheaper overall.
Below are the ingredients for the Food choices:
- Bewitched Sugar Skulls: Scrib Jelly, Flour, Columbine, Bervez Juice, and Honey.
- Longfin Pasty with Melon Sauce: fish fruit, melon vegetable, greens, and Frost Mirriam.

Bewitched Sugar Skulls
Increase Max Health by 4620, Max Stamina and Magicka by 4250, and Health Recovery by 462 for 2 hours.
These effects are scaled based on your level.
Best Sorcerer Tank Potions
The best potions are the “Tri-Potions” which restores health, magicka, and stamina. Moreover, this potion buffs your resource sustain to each stat pool helping your sustain. Make sure to unlock and max out the Alchemy skill Medicinal Use. This passive increases the duration of your potions effects. Essentially, the duration last 47.5 seconds with a cooldown of 45 seconds. Therefore, this passive becomes critical to obtain to keep higher uptime on buffs.
Alternatively, in high end trials, players run Heroism Potions. These potions grant Minor Heroism, restoring 1 Ultimate every 1.5 seconds for 47.5 seconds. Crafting Heroism potions are extremely expensive, but should be considered if running Veteran and or Hard Mode trials.

Sorcerer Tank Skill Explanation
Front Bar – Frost Staff Explanation
- Destructive Clench: 15 meter range that converts into a new effect, with Ice Taunts and debuffs enemies damage.
- Crystal Weapon: a spammable attack that can reduce armor by 1,000 for five seconds.
- Dark Deal: use magicka to restore stamina and health, also greats minor berserk and force, but it drops your block so be careful.
- Hardened Ward: grants a damage shield based off your max magicka and capped based on your max health, spam as survivability tool.
- Revealing Flare: merely slotting this skill grants major protection, and increase magicka recovery with Magicka aid passive in support skill line.
- ULT: Reviving Barrier: powerful defensive ultimate that grants entire group a shield and this morph heals over time.
Back Bar – Frost Staff Explanation
- Balance: exchange your health for magicka and also grants you the major resolve armor buff.
- Bound Aegis: slotting grants minor resolve, protection, and activating grants increase in block mitigation by 40%!
- Elemental Susceptibility: debuffs one enemy reducing damage and applying status effects randomly.
- Elemental Blockade: used as strong AOE damage over time that triggers status effects
- Silver Leash: uses stamina to pull in a single target mob, useful when clearing trash packs but it can be costly.
- ULT: Summon Charged Atronach: offensive ultimate that grants major berserk for whoever activates synergy and also applies concussion status effect.
Sorcerer Tank Rotation
Buffs and Debuffs
Make sure to debuff and taunt enemies with Frost Clench. Chain in enemies with Silver Leash. Cast Elemental Blockade to maintain the Crusher enchant at all times. Apply Elemental Susceptibility on as many enemies as possible. Use Crystal Weapon to provide 1000 extra Penetration and Minor Prophecy.
Sustain on the build is straightforward. Keep Balance up for the Resistance buff, you also gain Magicka back at the cost of Health. Dark Deal allows you to convert Magicka into Health and Stamina.
If you’re taking damage, use Hardened Ward for an incredible damage shield and a burst heal. All your skills can be block-casted, except Dark Deal, so make sure to use it strategically and don’t get caught off-guard by a boss heavy attack.
Rotation
Backup Bar: Elemental Blockade → Silver Leash → Elemental Susceptibility
Main Bar: Destructive Clench → Crystal Weapon
Notes
- Make sure to not put points into the Tri-Focus passive from the Destruction Staff skill line: you do not want to block using Magicka as this will greatly hinder your ability to survive and cast defensive skills.
- Don’t bar-swap before Frost Clench has landed, if you do, you will fail to apply Minor Brittle.
- We slot Revealing Flare for the 10% damage reduction from Major Protection as well as the 10% Magicka Recovery we get from the Magicka Aid passive. We never cast the skill so feel free to replace it with something else if you feel tanky enough.
- Reviving Barrier provides sustain through the Magicka Aid passive. Actually casting our defensive Ultimate isn’t dramatic because we use Saxhleel Champion, so our group still gets Major Force. Obviously, always favor the Charged Atronach to provide Major Berserk too.
- Elemental Susceptibility is an incredible single target skill that costs no resources. Swap it for Razor Caltrops in shorter encounters where you can stack enemies very close together.
- Balance is a great source of Major Resolve and sustain. If your Magicka sustain is fine, you can use Hurricane or Boundless Storm for Major Resolve and for some extra speed.
- You can decide to use Summon Unstable Clannfear if you want it as a burst heal, but it needs to be double-barred and it can be killed.
- Crystal Weapon brings 1000 extra Penetration to the group which is around 1.5% extra damage. Using it also heals you, because of the Blood Magic passive. If the DPS are already at the Penetration cap, you can replace it for something else.
- Bound Aegis is there for all the passive buffs it gives us. Cast it for insane block mitigation when you’re expecting heavy hits. Replace it with Resolving Vigor if you need a Heal-Over-Time or if you’re using Powerful Assault.
- Good flex options are: Overflowing Altar for Minor Lifesteal; Lightning Flood for the synergy, especially useful in Trials; Vibrant Shroud for the heal and buffs; Daedric Refuge for shielding your group.

ESO Sorcerer Tank Class Mastery
Players that reach level 50 in ESO while also fully reaching Rank 50 for their class skill lines and not subclassing can use 2 Class Mastery passives to improve their build. For the Sorcerer Tank build I recommend Calculated Defense which provides a free shield when casting Sorcerer abilities for a brief amount of time plus a unique 6% Weapon and Spell Damage buff for your group, plus Sphere of Influence which provides an additional shield for 4 seconds which also raises Health, Magicka and Stamina Recovery for 12 seconds.

Calculated Defense
Success is a certainty when nothing is left to chance.
Effect
While beginning to use a Sorcerer ability or an ability with a cast time, you gain a damage shield for 0.5 seconds that can absorb 8000 damage. This effect is based off your Max Health. If the shield does not break, you and nearby group members gain 6% Weapon and Spell Damage for 20 seconds.

Sphere of Influence
Magicka extends your reach, a benefit to those who fight beside you.
Effect
Casting a damage shield on yourself or an ally grants an additional shield that absorbs up to 4000 damage for 4 seconds and 225 Health, Magicka, and Stamina Recovery for 12 seconds. The shield scales off the higher of your Max Health or Max Magicka, and is capped at 25% of the target’s Max Health.
