Nightblade Class Overview
The Nightblade Class is an extremely powerful way to play in The Elder Scrolls Online. Nightblades have many powerful abilities located in their dedicated Class Skill lines for DPS, for Healing, and for Tanking. Nightblades are a great choice for dealing damage, mobility and healing, and are very fun for both PVE and PVP content in ESO. For a more detailed guide be sure to review our ESO Nightblade Class Guide.
The Nightblade is a base game class and does not require an additional purchase.
Nightblade Tank Primary Sets
Our first 5-piece set on this build is Perfected Pearlescent Ward, a heavy armor set found in Veteran Dreadsail Reef. This set is extremely powerful in the sense that it buffs your group’s Weapon and Spell Damage when group members are alive but greatly reduces damage taken when group members die. The latter can be particularly useful when trying to recover and getting resurrections going, when figuring out mechanics or facing some of the game’s toughest encounters, for example. Remember that you can also get the non-Perfected version of this set by running the Trial in Normal —1206 Health is all you will miss out on. If you plan on playing a Tank in ESO, this is a set that is really worth collecting.
Next, Turning Tide, found in Shipwright’s Regret, is a staple and a must-have for Tanking. When you block, your next Bash applies Major Vulnerability, increasing the enemies’ damage taken by 10% for 10 seconds. This is one of the most powerful damage buffs in the game, which is why this set almost always finds itself on Tank builds. Since we’re only one-barring this, remember to block and bash on your Backup bar every 15 seconds.
Although you could double-bar Turning Tide, a favorite option for the extra healing and Resistances is the Master’s One Hand and Shield, also known as (Perfected) Puncturing Remedy. This set can be acquired by doing the Dragonstar Arena.
For our Monster Set, Nazaray is one of the best options for Tanks. It can be acquired by defeating the last boss of Veteran Shipwright’s Regret. When you use an Ultimate ability, enemies around you have all Major and Minor debuffs applied to them extended based on how much Ultimate you spent. This set is extremely powerful as the build already provides lots of debuffs, and more importantly, when timed correctly, this can greatly increase the duration of the Major Vulnerability from Turning Tide. This Monster Set also synergizes very well with Nightblade’s great Ultimate-generation.

Nightblade Tank Alternative Sets
For our alternative sets, we’re going with a super easy-to-acquire, fully crafted setup.
This build can clear any Normal instance of any Trial as well as Veteran Dungeons, while still providing a lot to the group. Since the gear mentioned in the Primary Sets is essential for endgame content, these Alternate Sets serve as stepping stones, enabling you to farm the non-Perfected versions of sets before delving into Veteran difficulty and pursuing Hard Modes.
Firstly, we’re wearing 7 pieces of Druid’s Braid, providing us with a whopping 4,134 Maximum Health and 2,661 Maximum Magicka and Stamina, greatly bolstering our resource pools.
Next, Wretched Vitality is an extremely stat-dense set that provides us with 519 Magicka and Stamina Recovery, completely covering all our sustain needs.

Best Nightblade Tank Attributes
In ESO, having Max health is the most important for a tank. Therefore use all 64 attribute points into health. Anything in the range of 35,000 to 40,000 Health should be more than enough for most content. Depending on your Race passives you may need to put all Attribute points into Health to achieve this value. If you have extra Attribute Points to spare you may distribute them to Magicka and Stamina.
Secondly, you will need stamina as the next highest resource. ESO uses a hybrid system where synergies will restore resources based on your HIGHEST stat. Therefore, you block with stamina, and you want to restore stamina when using synergies. Make sure it’s slightly higher than magicka, you can use one or more glyphs or redistribute attributes slightly depending on your race choice.
0 Magicka
64 Health
0 Stamina
Best Nightblade Tank Race
Nord reigns as the top Tank race in ESO, principally thanks to the Rugged passive, which facilitates reaching the 33,100 Resistance cap. The passive alone translates to 7% damage mitigation, crucial for challenging encounters. Additionally, Nord’s boast big Health and Stamina pools along with increased Ultimate-generation. Pick Nord if you care about performance and optimization.
Pick a race that compliments your build and your end goal with the character. If you intend to swap back and forth between healing, damage, and tanking then your racial selection could change.
Other race considerations for tanking:
- Imperial: best raw stats due to 2,000 max health and stamina plus reduces all your ability cost by 6%!
- Orc: adds max health, max stamina, and movement speed plus weapon and spell damage, good if you intend to PvP with character.
- Redguard: incredible stamina sustain but lacks max health.
- Dark Elf: Adds magicka and stamina, fire resist and weapon and spell damage, good if you like to DPS and tank with one character.
- Argonian: adds max health, stamia, magicka, healing done, and resources resourcse when you drink a potion, ideal if you want to tank or heal with one character.
For more details on all ESO Races and passive bonuses be sure to check out our Full ESO Race Guide.
Best Nightblade Tank Mundus Stones
The best Mundus Stone for a Tank is the Atronach due to the increase in magicka regeneration. This might seem odd, but at a high level in tanking, you use Magicka for skills and Stamina for blocking. Therefore, if you run out, there goes your ability to cast skills, buff allies, and taunt. Below are some other helpful choices in Mundus Stone:
- The Lady: increases resistance, good if below 30,000 buffed with Major Resolve active.
- The Lord: increases max health, good depending on your race if you cannot reach 30,000 health.
Best Nightblade Tank Food and Drink Buff
The best food for a tank is Bewitched Sugar Skulls because it increases all three stat pools. Make sure your stamina is higher than Magicka so synergies restore stamina. An alternative to Bewitched Sugar Skulls is Longfin Pasty with Melon Sauce. This is purple quality, cheaper, same buff to three stat pools just cheaper overall.
Below are the ingredients for the Food choices:
- Bewitched Sugar Skulls: Scrib Jelly, Flour, Columbine, Bervez Juice, and Honey.
- Longfin Pasty with Melon Sauce: fish fruit, melon vegetable, greens, and Frost Mirriam.

Bewitched Sugar Skulls
Increase Max Health by 4620, Max Stamina and Magicka by 4250, and Health Recovery by 462 for 2 hours.
These effects are scaled based on your level.
Best Nightblade Tank Potions
The best potions are the “Tri-Potions” which restores health, magicka, and stamina. Moreover, this potion buffs your resource sustain to each stat pool helping your sustain. Make sure to unlock and max out the Alchemy skill Medicinal Use. This passive increases the duration of your potions effects. Essentially, the duration last 47.5 seconds with a cooldown of 45 seconds. Therefore, this passive becomes critical to obtain to keep higher uptime on buffs.
Alternatively, in high end trials, players run Heroism Potions. These potions grant Minor Heroism, restoring 1 Ultimate every 1.5 seconds for 47.5 seconds. Crafting Heroism potions are extremely expensive, but should be considered if running Veteran and or Hard Mode trials.

- ULT: Reviving Barrier: powerful defensive ultimate that grants entire group a shield and this morph heals over time.
Back Bar – Ice Staff Explanation
- Silver Leash: uses stamina to pull in a single target mob, useful when clearing trash packs but it can be costly.
- Overflowing Altar: place altar that heals allies doing damage and allies can use a synergy to get a burst heal.
- Destructive Clench: 15 meter range that converts into a new effect, with Ice Taunts and debuffs enemies damage.
- Elemental Blockade: used as strong AOE damage over time that triggers status effects

Nightblade Tank Rotation
Buffs and Debuffs
Your primary objective on this Nightblade Tank build is to make sure that the boss and other dangerous enemies are taunted, using Pierce Armor or Frost Clench, so that the rest of your group can fulfill their roles. Silver Leash also allows you to chain enemies in so that they melt to your group’s Area-Of-Effect damage.
Now that you’re being focused, all that matters is that you survive, because a dead Tank often translates into a wipe. Siphoning Attacks provides sustain and healing just for being slotted, and activating it replenishes resources, helpful to sustain Stamina even while blocking. Mirage is a great skill that bolsters your Resistances, reduces AOE damage taken and allows you to roll-dodge for free. Dark Cloak, Refreshing Path and Overflowing Altar provide Healing-Over-Time but you can also heal by casting Pierce Armor thanks to the Master’s One Hand and Shield. And don’t forget, you get Major Resolve from the Shadow Barrier passive by simply casting your Shadow abilities, granting you almost 6,000 Resistances.
Finally, in addition to soaking up damage, you want to buff the rest of your group and debuff your enemies. Try to keep Turning Tide up whenever it’s off cooldown, as Major Vulnerability is a very strong damage boost. Aim to activate it just before casting your Ultimate, as Nazaray, will extend the duration of all debuffs for a very long time when you use your Aggressive Horn Ultimate.
Rotation
Backup Bar: Mirage → Destructive Clench → Elemental Blockade → Silver Leash → Overflowing Altar
Main Bar: Dark Cloak → Pierce Armor → Refreshing Path → Mass Hysteria → Siphoning Attacks
Notes
- If you are the only Nightblade and there are no Sorcerers in your group, you should slot Soul Harvest as your Main Bar ultimate in order to proc the Hemorrhage passive and provide Minor Savagery to your teammates. You don’t actually have to ever use it.
- Make sure to not put points into the Tri-Focus passive from the Destruction Staff skill line: you do not want to block using Magicka as this will greatly hinder your ability to survive and cast defensive skills.
- Don’t bar-swap before Frost Clench has landed, if you do you will fail to apply Minor Brittle.
- You can flex Mirage for Resolving Vigor if you need more healing but you don’t require Major Evasion. This is also a good idea if you want to use the Powerful Assault set instead of Turning Tide.
- Mass Hysteria, Overflowing Altar and Silver Leash can be swapped with other skills you might need in certain encounters: Crushing Shock is a great ranged interrupt, Immovable greatly increases the amount you can block, Defensive Stance improves your ability to block for slotting it and grants you a damage shield against projectiles, Flare grants you Major Protection for slotting it, Power Extraction is a good way to further reduce enemies’ damage, Lotus Fan is a gap-closer that also increases damage taken.

ESO Nightblade Tank Class Mastery
Players that reach level 50 in ESO while also fully reaching Rank 50 for their class skill lines and not subclassing can use 2 Class Mastery passives to improve their build. For the Nightblade Tank I recommend Cutthroat’s Focus which allows you to dodge attacks while increasing your attacker’s damage taken and Share the Spoils which grants your group members Magicka, Stamina and Ultimate while doubling the Ultimate you gain from the Transfer passive.

Cutthroat’s Focus
This duel will be their last. For you, it’s just another dance.
Effect
Activating a Nightblade ability while bracing causes you to dodge attacks for 0.3 seconds.
Whenever you dodge an attack, your attacker’s psyche suffers, increasing their damage taken by 5% for 5 seconds, increasing to 20 seconds against monsters.

Share the Spoils
Secrets and coin are tools as sharp as the daggers you wield.
Effect
Upgrades rank 2 of Transfer to grant group members 250 Magicka and Stamina, 2 Ultimate, and doubles the Ultimate you gain when it activates.
