Dragonknight Class Overview
The Dragonknight Class is an extremely powerful way to play in The Elder Scrolls Online. Dragonknights have many similarities with other classes in ESO such as dedicated Class Skill lines for DPS, for Healing, and for Tanking. Dragonknights are known for their sturdy nature as melee combat specialists but also have many powerful magic abilities. For a more detailed guide be sure to review our ESO Dragonknight Class Guide.
Dragonknight Tank Primary Sets
Our first 5-piece set on this build is Perfected Pearlescent Ward, a heavy armor set found in Veteran Dreadsail Reef. This set is extremely powerful in the sense that it buffs your group’s Weapon and Spell Damage for group members that are alive and greatly reduces damage taken based on the number of dead group members. The latter can be particularly useful when trying to recover and getting resurrections going, when figuring out mechanics or facing some of the game’s toughest encounters, for example. Remember that you can also get the non-Perfected version of this set by running the Trial in Normal —1206 Health is all you will miss out on. If you plan on playing a Tank in ESO, this is a set that is really worth collecting. We’re putting this set on our body pieces.
Next, Turning Tide, found in Shipwright’s Regret, is a staple and a must-have for Tanking. When you block, your next Bash applies Major Vulnerability, increasing the enemies’ damage taken by 10% for 10 seconds. This is one of the most powerful damage buffs in the game, which is why this set almost always finds itself on Tank builds. We’re putting it on our jewelry and our weapons, both on the Main and Backup Bars.
Our Monster Set, Archdruid Devyric, can be a little tricky to obtain as Veteran Earthen Root Enclave is a difficult Dungeon. However, it pairs perfectly with Turning Tide: a simple Heavy Attack (doesn’t need to be fully-charged) applies Major Vulnerability to up to 6 enemies for 7 seconds. Combining Turning Tide with Archdruid Devyric ensures 100% uptime on Major Vulnerability, significantly speeding up encounters by boosting damage output immensely. This setup is great in Trials and Dungeons because you can maintain the debuff throughout the fight, without having to rely on having Necromancers and their Colossus Ultimate in the group.
Finally, if you feel like you can keep track of the Turning Tide cooldown and remember to block and bash on your Frost Staff bar every 15 seconds, you can opt to swap the Turning Tide weapons for the Master’s One Hand and Shield. Also known as (Perfected) Puncturing Remedy, this Arena Set is a favorite option for the extra healing and Resistances it provides. This set can be acquired by doing the Dragonstar Arena.

LVL 50 – CP 160
SET BONUS
(2 items) Adds 1206 Maximum Health
(3 items) Gain Minor Aegis at all times, reducing your damage taken from Dungeon, Trial, and Arena Monsters by 5%.

You can only benefit from this set from one source.

Turning Tide
LVL 50 – CP 160
SET BONUS
(2 items) Adds 1206 Maximum Health
(3 items) Adds 1096 Maximum Stamina
(4 items) Adds 1206 Maximum Health

This effect can occur once every 15 seconds and scales off your Max Health.

Archdruid Devyric
LVL 50 – CP 160
SET BONUS
(1 item) Adds 1487 Offensive Penetration
(2 items) When you deal damage with a Heavy Attack, after 1.2 seconds deal 650 Shock damage to up to 6 enemies within a 7 by 5 meter line on your target, applying Major Vulnerability to them for 7 seconds, increasing the damage enemies take by 10%. This effect can occur once every 15 seconds and scales off the higher of your Weapon or Spell Damage.
Puncturing Remedy
LVL 50 – CP 160
SET BONUS
(2 items) The initial heal of Grand Healing invigorates you and group members affected for 6 seconds, restoring 224 Magicka and Stamina every 2 seconds.
Dragonknight Tank Alternative Sets
For our alternative sets, our main 5 piece set on this build is Crimson Oath’s Rive, a heavy armor set from The Dread Cellar, that provides a substantial armor reduction to surrounding enemies with an easy proc condition. This greatly increases damage output by helping DPS players reach the 18,200 Penetration cap, especially those in medium armor. You could make a point for going with Turning Tide here too, but Crimson Oath’s Rive is definitely also a must-collect for Tanking in ESO especially if you plan to Off-Tank Veteran Hard-Mode Trials.
The second set on this build, Powerful Assault is another staple in Tanking that buffs your group’s damage: it is easily maintained by casting Resolving Vigor on the backbar. The set can be traded for Tel Var in the Imperial City or bought on Guild Traders. It’s a medium set so make sure to have it on your jewelry and as your Backup Bar weapon.
Since Dragonknight sustain and passives rely on Ultimate generation, Bloodspawn is a great Monster Set that can be acquired easily by completing Veteran Spindleclutch II. While uptime on the armor buff from Bloodspawn will be too low to balance your build around, the Ultimate generation can be very useful, especially if you want to bypass mechanics by becoming immortal, using your Magma Shell Ultimate.
Other very easy to get monster set alternatives are Lord Warden, for group tankiness, and Engine Guardian, for sustain.
Finally, you may choose any front bar weapon you want but a favorite option is Puncturing Remedy, previously mentioned.

Crimson Oath’s Rive
LVL 50 – CP 160
SET BONUS

LVL 50 – CP 160
SET BONUS

Best Dragonknight Tank Attributes
In ESO, having Max health is the most important for a tank. Therefore use all 64 attribute points into health. Anything in the range of 35,000 to 40,000 Health should be more than enough for most content. Depending on your Race passives you may need to put all Attribute points into Health to achieve this value. If you have extra Attribute Points to spare you may distribute them to Magicka and Stamina.
Secondly, you will need stamina as the next highest resource. ESO uses a hybrid system where synergies will restore resources based on your HIGHEST stat. Therefore, you block with stamina, and you want to restore stamina when using synergies. Make sure it’s slightly higher than magicka, you can use one or more glyphs or redistribute attributes slightly depending on your race choice.
0 Magicka
64 Health
0 Stamina
Best Dragonknight Tank Race
Nord reigns as the top Tank race in ESO, principally thanks to the Rugged passive, which facilitates reaching the 33,100 Resistance cap. The passive alone translates to 7% damage mitigation, crucial for challenging encounters. Additionally, Nord’s boast big Health and Stamina pools along with increased Ultimate-generation. Pick Nord if you care about performance and optimization.
Pick a race that compliments your build and your end goal with the character. If you intend to swap back and forth between healing, damage, and tanking then your racial selection could change.
Other race considerations for tanking:
- Imperial: best raw stats due to 2,000 max health and stamina plus reduces all your ability cost by 6%!
- Orc: adds max health, max stamina, and movement speed plus weapon and spell damage, good if you intend to PvP with character.
- Redguard: incredible stamina sustain but lacks max health.
- Dark Elf: Adds magicka and stamina, fire resist and weapon and spell damage, good if you like to DPS and tank with one character.
- Argonian: adds max health, stamia, magicka, healing done, and resources resourcse when you drink a potion, ideal if you want to tank or heal with one character.
For more details on all ESO Races and passive bonuses be sure to check out our Full ESO Race Guide.
Best Dragonknight Tank Mundus Stones
The best Mundus Stone for a Tank is the Atronach due to the increase in magicka regeneration. This might seem odd, but at a high level in tanking, you use Magicka for skills and Stamina for blocking. Therefore, if you run out, there goes your ability to cast skills, buff allies, and taunt. Below are some other helpful choices in Mundus Stone:
- The Lady: increases resistance, good if below 30,000 buffed with Major Resolve active.
- The Lord: increases max health, good depending on your race if you cannot reach 30,000 health.
Best Dragonknight Tank Food and Drink Buff
The best food for a tank is Bewitched Sugar Skulls because it increases all three stat pools. Make sure your stamina is higher than Magicka so synergies restore stamina. An alternative to Bewitched Sugar Skulls is Longfin Pasty with Melon Sauce. This is purple quality, cheaper, same buff to three stat pools just cheaper overall.
Below are the ingredients for the Food choices:
- Bewitched Sugar Skulls: Scrib Jelly, Flour, Columbine, Bervez Juice, and Honey.
- Longfin Pasty with Melon Sauce: fish fruit, melon vegetable, greens, and Frost Mirriam.

Bewitched Sugar Skulls
Increase Max Health by 4620, Max Stamina and Magicka by 4250, and Health Recovery by 462 for 2 hours.
These effects are scaled based on your level.
Best Dragonknight Tank Potions
The best potions are the “Tri-Potions” which restores health, magicka, and stamina. Moreover, this potion buffs your resource sustain to each stat pool helping your sustain. Make sure to unlock and max out the Alchemy skill Medicinal Use. This passive increases the duration of your potions effects. Essentially, the duration last 47.5 seconds with a cooldown of 45 seconds. Therefore, this passive becomes critical to obtain to keep higher uptime on buffs.
Alternatively, in high end trials, players run Heroism Potions. These potions grant Minor Heroism, restoring 1 Ultimate every 1.5 seconds for 47.5 seconds. Crafting Heroism potions are extremely expensive, but should be considered if running Veteran and or Hard Mode trials.

Dragonknight Tank Skills Explanation
Front Bar – One Hand And Shield Explanation
- Pierce Armor: melee taunt that costs stamina and inflicts two armor debuffs, Minor and Major breach.
- Hearth And Home: This skill provides a solid heal over time effect based on your Maximum Health, plus the powerful Major Protection buff, reducing your damage taken by 10%.
- Igneous Shield: grants a large shield and major mending, use a burst heal immediately following to take advantage of extra healing.
- Magma Fist: use this to deal damage and debuff enemies with the Heat Shock effect, increasing their damage taken from all sources.
- Blood Of The Green Dragon: flex spot for powerful self-healing with a heal-over-time component and powerful buffs, including Major Endurance and Major Fortitude. If you have a good healer, this may not be needed.
- ULT: Temporal Guard: slotted for passive 5% damage reduction via minor protection buff, can be activated to rewind time a few seconds.
Back Bar – Ice Staff Explanation
- Earthshield Mantle: grants you the armor buff Major Resolve and also grants a small damage shield.
- Resolving Vigor: heal over time that only applies to you, but also gives minor resolve, increasing armor
- Choking Talons: AOE damage skill that can crowd control enemies in place and debuffs them with Minor Maim, resulting in 5% damage reduction.
- Elemental Blockade: used to trigger your backbar weapon glyph.
- Chains of Dominance: This skill will pull mobs to you and debuffs them with Major Cowardice, reducing their Weapon and Spell Damage by 430 for 15 seconds. This also counts as a taunt, so you do not need to taunt pulled enemies.
- ULT: Aggressive War Horn: burst team ultimate, boost max stats and grants 20% more critical damage for 10 seconds.
Dragonknight Tank Rotation
Buffs and Debuffs
Make sure to debuff and taunt enemies with Pierce Armor and pull them in with Chains of Dominance, which also taunts. Cast Elemental Blockade to maintain the Crusher enchant at all times.
Keep Earthshield Mantle and Resolving Vigor up at all times to keep your Resistances bolstered.
If you’re taking damage, Earthshield Mantle and Igneous Shield are both strong defensive tools that provide you with a damage shield. Blood Of The Green Dragon will heal you considerably more if you drop to low health. All these skills can be block-casted, so you can just hold the block button and recover.
Pay attention to your set’s cooldowns and try to time Major Vulnerability phases with your Aggressive Horn Ultimate for insane group damage.
Remember to cast Magma Fist regularly to keep the Heat Shock debuff active.
Additional Notes
- Make sure to not put points into the Tri-Focus passive from the Destruction Staff skill line: you do not want to block using Magicka as this will greatly hinder your ability to survive and cast defensive skills.
- We use Temporal Guard for the 5% damage mitigation we get from slotting it, as well as the small shield you get while blocking, from the Psijic passive, Concentrated Barrier. You can also use Magma Shell instead of Temporal Guard, for a few seconds of immortality for you and your allies, great in difficult encounters. Just remember that you should always prioritize casting Aggressive Horn to buff your group damage output.
- Earthshield Mantle is a great skill to get your Major Resolve Armor buff as well as a damage shield, but if you feel like you lack some sustain in certain fights, you can replace it with Balance, from the Mages Guild skill line. The ability allows you to trade Health for Magicka and grants you Major Resolve.
- Magma Fist can be a flex slot if another Dragonknight brings the same debuff. You can slot Defensive Stance instead for more block mitigation and a damage shield against projectiles, great in Sunspire. Or you can also slot Igneous Weapons instead, to provide Major Sorcery and Brutality to your group.
- We slot Revealing Flare for the 10% damage reduction from Major Protection as well as the 10% Magicka Recovery we get from the Magicka Aid passive. We don’t actually cast the skill so feel free to replace it with something else if you feel tanky enough.
