Enshrouded Shields and Wards Overview
In Enshrouded, Shields and Wards are equipped in your off hand and are the equipment used to block. They both have two stats: block and parry power. Each of these determines how you lower (mitigate) or avoid damage entirely.
Block (Active Defense)

This stat determines your “shield up” stance. While holding your block button, your shield absorbs incoming damage.
- If your Block stat is higher than the enemy’s damage, you can absorb hits with minimal to no stamina drain.
- If your Block is lower, you still avoid health damage, but your stamina will drain rapidly.
- Note: You must actively raise your shield to get this benefit; simply having it equipped won’t protect you.
Keep in mind, while you can hold block until your stamina runs out, you will not regenerate stamina with your shield up. For players who are good with timing, it’s better to try and actively block, when you expect incoming damage vs. holding and chewing through huge amounts of stamina. Every creature that attacks will drain your stamina, so in AOE fights this becomes even more challenging.
Parry Power (Timed Defense)

This stat affects your “Perfect Block.” By timing your block right as an attack is about to land, you perform a parry. Once you perform a perfect parry, you will see a huge chunk of grey fill up on the enemies bar. At full grey, they will be stunned allowing you to attack them freely. If you have the Merciless skill unlock, you can attack them in a 1 second animation that deals 500% more increased damage.
Shield vs. Ward: Which should you choose?
Shields: You prefer a Warrior playstyle or tank build – if you have a high Strength build and rely on physical damage mitigation. They offer higher Block stats, which reduces the stamina cost of holding your shield up.
Ward: if you are a Battlemage or prioritize Parry over holding block. Wards offer Mana Regeneration and elemental resistances that Bulwarks lack, though they typically have lower physical Block values.
At end-game, Wards offer much less block but resistance to elements. This becomes critical trade off and should be considered when making your choice.
How to Get Shields and Wards
Shields and Wards can be crafted by the Blacksmith (shields) or Alchemist (Wards). You will also find only a few “lore” items which are quest related. Some mobs drop shields are lower quality, but generally you will craft shields as you progress through levels in Enshrouded.
Best Shields & Wards Ranked (Update 8)
Below are the top defensive pairings for your one-handed builds, ranked by their utility, parry power, and specialized resistances:
- Prismatic Ward
- Sunpiercer Shield
- Golden Bulwark Shield
- Spectral Ward
- Pikemead’s Bulwark
1. Prismatic Ward (Max Resistance)

Prismatic Ward Bonuses and Features:
- Block: 17
- Parry Power: 268
- Mana Regeneration: +7
- Ice Resistance: +10%
- Shock Resistance: +10%
The Prismatic Ward is the premier choice for Battlemages and hybrid builds. While it doesn’t have the highest physical block, its combination of mana sustain and dual-elemental protection makes it the most versatile defensive tool in the game.

At end-game, almost every build uses mana for spellcasting. Even Warrior builds can make use of a Staff by equipping the Healing Channel spell and using it post fight to fill up on health. Since health regeneration was nerfed, you have two options post fight when health is low. Chug time consuming potions, or use your dump stat mana and channel healing to full to keep you in exploration mode.
Moreover, the increased shock and ice resistance is vital to end-game areas in Enshrouded. The Veilwater Basin is the furthest zone is emphasizes shock damage. Meanwhile, the previous zone, Albaneve Summits, is a fridge mountain area with frost enemies. Stacking two bonuses at once helps you mitigate annoying and dangerous elemental damage for free.
The only drawback to the Prismatic is it’s lower block 17 in comparison with others on this list. You won’t be infinitely holding this Ward soaking up countless attacks, but we have other options for you below for that style.
2. Sunpiercer Shield (Merciless Builds)

Sunpiercer Shield Bonuses and Features:
- Block: 34
- Parry Power: 321
- Best For: Perfect blocking and high-level dueling.
If your playstyle revolves around timing and the “Merciless Attack” mechanic, the Sunpiercer Shield is unmatched. It boasts the highest Parry Power, allowing you to break an enemy’s defenses with a single well-timed block.

The Shockwave skill combined with the Sunpiercer Shield is a powerful combo. It solves the one-handed shields biggest weakness, AOE damage. You perfect parry an attack and fill up the overpower bar (above head) and immediately send a huge shockwave out. This also fills up other enemies stun bars based on how much strength you have. The result at end game is a massive area shockwave that fills up multiple enemies stun bars. This allows you to quickly transition into a Merciless Attack, and with Blood Warrior, get a health orb restoring health.
If Sunpiercer shield had passive elemental resistance it would rank higher, but it’s still the second best shield option in the game currently.
3. Golden Bulwark Shield (Tanking)

Golden Bulwark Shield Bonuses and Features:
- Block: 42
- Parry Power: 268
- Best For: Aggressive blocking and damage mitigation.
The Golden Bulwark Shield is designed for the “Tank” who prefers to hold their ground. With the highest raw Block stat, you can absorb significantly more punishment without having your guard broken compared to the lighter Wards. With a block stat of 42, it’s the highest in the game. You’ll want to use Golden Bulwark Shield if you struggle with the block timing and you just want to mitigate as much damage as possible.

While holding block you won’t be regenerating stamina. Therefore, if you lean into this block tank playstyle, you can have 4,000 stamina regeneration and it won’t help while blocking. Look for food, consumables, and drinks that give you max stamina. Especially increasing your comfort and rested bonus so you stamina pool is as large as possible. Endurance too can help allowing you to hold block for a very long time.
4. Spectral Ward (Early Craftable)

Spectral Ward Bonuses and Features:
- Block: 4
- Parry Power: 20
- Mana Regeneration: +2
- Poison Resistance: +10%
A staple for the early-to-mid game, the Spectral Ward provides essential utility long before you reach the Albaneve Summits. The poison resistance is particularly helpful when navigating the early Shroud and spider-infested ruins. But most importantly, it’s a craftable Ward with Mana Regeneration.
While the regen isn’t that high, it allows you to equip the Spectral Ward and any one-handed weapon while exploring. You’ll passively recover mana just by having the weapon and shield equipped and out. Then, swap back to a Staff when you need some healing or ready to launch another Fireball. This is a great Ward option for almost any build until you reach advanced levels and can craft a higher level shield or ward with better stats.
5. Pikemead’s Bulwark (Lore Item)

Pikemead’s Bulwark Bonuses and Features:
- Block: 34
- Parry Power: 180
- Shroud Resistance: +8%
- Note: Excellent high-durability option for new players.
Found during the Queen’s Tomb questline, this legendary lore item is a fantastic early-game find. Its Shroud resistance offers a unique layer of protection that remains useful well into the mid-game.

You’ll get the quest from the Carpenter. Head to Mistbury Catacombs northeast of the Springlands Ancient Spire. You will need to complete a puzzle and fight some generic shroud mobs but it’s worth it. Mainly for the Shroud Resistance which stacks with shroud resistance skills found in between the Healer and Battlemage tree.
While not an end-game meta shield, it is a lore item. Therefore, you can recraft this at the Blacksmith as you progress throughout Enshrouded and higher levels. So if you’re struggling with a Shroud boss or the area, consider busting out the Pikemead’s Bulwark for extra resistance.
Core Blocking & Parry Skills

These skills directly enhance your ability to mitigate damage and stagger enemies with your shield.
- Power Parry (Center): Increases the stun bar gain on enemies when you perform a successful parry with a shield.
- Quick Reflex Block (Beastmaster): A new passive (found in the Assassin/Dexterity area) that allows you to interrupt your own attack animation to block, making combat feel much more fluid and reactive.
- Vigorous Deflection (Athlete): Recovers 30 stamina points instantly upon a successful parry, allowing you to stay in the fight longer.
- Arcane Deflection (Battlemage): Successfully parrying an enemy’s attack restores 20 mana.
Stun & Overpower Mechanics

To trigger a Merciless Attack, you must first “Overpower” an enemy by filling their stun bar through parries or aggressive strikes.
- Heavy Handed (Barbarian): Increases the enemy’s stun bar by an additional 20% when you attack into their block with a melee weapon.
- Breach (Warrior/Barbarian): When you break an enemy’s block, they suffer 100% more melee damage for 2 seconds, a perfect window to land a finisher.
- Shockwave (Barbarian): Overpowering an enemy triggers a shockwave that increases the stun bars of nearby enemies and pushes them back, giving you breathing room to execute your target.
Merciless Attack Synergy

Once you’ve unlocked the base Merciless Attack, these follow-up skills provide massive resource sustain:
- Blood Warrior (Athlete): Spawns a Health Orb when you defeat an enemy with a Merciless Attack.
- Snap (Tank): Restores 10% Mana whenever you trigger a Merciless Attack.
- Opportunity (Center): Further increases the damage dealt by Merciless Attacks.
Defensive & Attribute Scaling
- Shiny Plates (Tank): Increases the armor points gained from Physical Armor by 10%.
- Thick Skin (Tank): Grants +1 Constitution for every two levels of your Flame, significantly boosting your total HP pool.
- Earth Aura (Tank): Reduces all incoming damage for you and nearby allies by 10%, making you the ultimate frontline.
