Weapon Gems were introduced to Enshrouded as a major mid-to-late game progression system in the “Thralls of Twilight” update (Patch #2, May 2024). They function as powerful, slot-in modifications that grant weapons unique “Proc” effects such as triggering life leech, elemental explosions, or status debuffs. Unlike standard weapon upgrades that use Runes, Gems must be discovered in the world, often as rare drops from elite enemies like Fell Banshees or Hollow Reapers, or through specific activities like fishing.
To use Gems, players must first complete the “Finding and Using a Gem Forge” quest to unlock specialized stations hidden within Shroud Lairs. Each weapon must have an available “Gem Slot” to receive a stone, and the socketing process requires Archaic Essence, a currency farmed from enemies and objects within the Shroud. Gems are tiered by biome, meaning you must visit a Gem Forge in a higher-level region (like the Kindlewastes) to upgrade a Gem to its maximum level.

How to Unlock Gems in Enshrouded
Before you can socket any gem, you need to unlock the system through the Alchemist. Speak to the Alchemist at your base and select the “About Weapon Gems” dialogue option, which is marked with a red exclamation mark. This triggers the quest “Finding and Using a Gem Forge.” Complete the quest to gain access to Gem Forges throughout Embervale.
Pro Tip: If you have already found a Gem Forge in the world without completing the quest first, you will not be able to interact with it. Completing the Alchemist quest is a requirement to unlock all forge interactions.
Once the quest is complete, Gem Forges appear on your map as points of interest within Shroud Lairs.

How to Slot Gems in Enshrouded
Socketing a gem requires three things: a weapon with an available Gem Slot, the gem you want to insert, and enough Archaic Essence of the appropriate biome tier. Inserting a gem costs 50 Archaic Essence. Removing a gem costs 25 Archaic Essence of the corresponding biome tier and returns the gem undamaged so you can socket it elsewhere.
To socket a gem, interact with any Gem Forge and navigate to the weapon you want to modify. You can manage the slot directly from the forge interface, choosing to insert, extract, or upgrade without needing to unequip the weapon first.
Note: a weapon with a socketed gem cannot be salvaged or destroyed until the gem is extracted. If you want to scrap a weapon that has a gem in it, visit a Gem Forge first and pull the gem out before dismantling.

How to Upgrade Gems in Enshrouded
Every gem has a numeric level that scales its effect. A Gem of Bleeding at level 5 deals modest damage over time. The same gem at level 50 deals substantially more damage.
Upgrading is done at any Gem Forge using Archaic Essence. The forge caps how high you can take the gem. Springlands forges cap at level 12. Revelwood forges cap at level 18. Kindlewastes forges cap at level 25. The Albaneve Summits forges cap at approximately level 30 to 33. Veilwater Basin Night Sanctum forges are the endgame upgrade destination and allow gems to reach their maximum level.
If a gem is already socketed in a weapon, you can upgrade it directly from the forge without removing it first. The upgrade cost scales with the gem’s current level and the forge tier. Higher-tier forges cost more per upgrade step, but they allow you to go further.

You can also recycle unwanted gems at a forge to recover Archaic Essence. Recycling at a higher-tier forge returns more essence than recycling at a lower one, so if you have mid-level gems you no longer need, carry them to the Veilwater Basin before scrapping them. Recycle only gems below your target build level; do not break down anything above level 30 if your goal is a level 50 gem.
Pro Tip: The most efficient upgrade path is to max out a gem at the Springlands Night Sanctum first, then bring it to Revelwood, push it to 18, then carry it forward through each region. This avoids wasting higher-tier essence on gem levels that lower-tier forges could have handled at lower cost.
Enshrouded Gem Progression
If you are new to gems, start with the Gem of Bleeding from the Springlands Fell Banshee near Moth’s Grove. It requires no complex setup, works on most melee weapons, and gives you an immediate boost to damage while you learn how the Gem Forge upgrade system works.
Once you have progressed to the Kindlewastes, farming the Scavenger Berserkers or Vukah Berserkers for a Gem of Battle Mania should be a priority. This gem alone makes resource management incredibly easy.
For endgame, your gem choice should follow your build identity: Battle Mania if you want universal sustain, Storm’s Eye if you are committed to shock and caster damage, Currents if you are willing to build the full Soaked setup for maximum shock output, Burning if you are focused on fire damage, etc.

Archaic Essence Farming
Archaic Essence is the currency for all gem operations: inserting, removing, and upgrading. Each biome has its own tier of essence, and you can only use a given tier at the corresponding biome’s forge. The three brood nests in each biome are the primary farming source. The essence glows golden and can be collected by hand, mined with your pickaxe, or obtained by recycling gems at a forge.
For players who have reached the Veilwater Basin, Level 40 Archaic Essence from the Basin’s brood nests and Night Sanctum forge is the only material that matters for maxing out gems. Lower-tier essence from earlier biomes has no use at the top-end forge beyond the base insertion and removal costs, which stay fixed regardless of gem level.
Enshrouded Gems FAQ
1. How do you unlock gems in Enshrouded?
Speak to the Alchemist at your base and select the “About Weapon Gems” option, which is marked with a red exclamation mark. This starts the “Finding and Using a Gem Forge” quest, and completing it unlocks full gem and forge interactions.
2. Can you socket a gem into any weapon?
No. Only weapons that already have a Gem Slot can accept a gem. You cannot add a Gem Slot to a weapon that does not have one. Gem-slotted weapons are typically mid-to-late game drops found in Shroud Lairs and from elite enemies.
3. What is Archaic Essence and where do you farm it?
Archaic Essence is the currency used to insert, remove, and upgrade gems at Gem Forges. It is found at the three brood nests in each biome, glowing golden and collectable by hand or with a pickaxe. Each biome has its own tier of essence, and each tier can only be used at that biome’s corresponding forge. Recycling unwanted gems at a forge also returns some essence.
4. Can you upgrade gems past the cap at a lower-tier forge?
No. Each forge has a hard cap on gem level. Springlands forges cap at level 12, Revelwood at 18, Kindlewastes at 25, Albaneve Summits at roughly 30 to 33, and the Veilwater Basin Night Sanctum forge is where gems reach their maximum level. To push a gem past any given biome’s cap, you must physically travel to a higher-tier Gem Forge.
5. What happens if you try to salvage a weapon with a gem in it?
You cannot. Weapons with a socketed gem are locked from salvaging and destruction until the gem is extracted at a Gem Forge. Extraction costs 25 Archaic Essence of the appropriate biome tier and returns the gem undamaged.
6. Does the Gem of Bleeding work with the Gem of Battle Mania on the same weapon?
No. Each weapon holds only one Gem Slot. If you want both effects, you need two separate weapons with gem slots and you will need to swap between them during combat. For example, using a Greatsword with Gem of Battle Mania for sustained resource regeneration and switching to a second Greatsword with Gem of Bleeding to stack the bleed effect before swapping back is a valid endgame tactic.
