Table of Contents
Fell Dragon Youngling Overview
- Boss Type: Dragon / Fell
- Location: Howling Peak, Albaneve Summits
- Recommended Level: 35
- Damage Types: Fire / Physical
- Key Threats: Fire breath, aerial attacks, burn damage
The Fell Dragon Youngling fight revolves around filling up its stun meter to knock it down. This can be done by parrying fireballs or through Stun Arrows and the Chain Lightning Spell. Once on the ground, the boss takes extra damage. Thus, the fight involves surviving, stunning, and then killing the Fell Dragon Youngling.
How to Find the Fell Dragon Youngling

The Fell Dragon Youngling can be found in the Albaneve Summits at the Howling Peak location. This is northeast on your map. However, you will need to first upgrade your flame altar to level 6 to reach the Albaneve Summits, then complete a quest to get the boss to spawn.

Preceded by the Ignite the Coldest Elixir Well quest, Slaying the Corrupted Beast has you light Baelfire at various Garrion’s throughout the Albaneve Summits. The fire Balefire will be marked on your map and you must go to that location, climb to the top and interact with the braizer.

Once done, you must look around for more baelfire in the distance. The easiest way to do this is to look for a red shooting beam coming from the locations, typically a large metal structure. Here is a map of all eight Balefires to light.

Next, you must climb to the peak, which can be difficult. In the southwestern part of the peak, you will find a cave entrance. This is your main source of climbing. Eventually, you will reach this scaffolding that you can grapple up. Before you head out, make sure to bring a flame altar and have one spot free to place at the top. Just before the fight, you can build a flame altar and some basic structures to increase your comfort, rest, repair, etc. This is helpful if you die to quickly get some rested XP, repair if needed, and jump back in the fight.

Keep climbing until you reach what seems like an impossible jump with a skeleton and a tip from the developers. They are warning you of two ways to beat the dragon: via parrying or stun arrows. From here, you can make the jump and glide due to a draft so don’t be afraid to jump and go for it. The boss battle will have an outside ring, a hollowed-out center portion with fire and a deadly shroud around it. But, before you go, let us prepare for how to handle this boss!
Preparing for the Fell Dragon Youngling Fight
Before you attack the Fell Dragon Youngling fight you need to get the best gear, consumables and build for the fight.
Best Weapons for the Fell Dragon

The most important aspect of this fight is Stun Arrows and a Bow. This allows any build, yes even spellcasters, to knock down the boss with ease. You want 150-200 Stun Arrows and a Bow to shoot the boss when it’s not moving.

Second, you want a shield for perfect parries, which are timed blocks. From our experience, an actual shield works better than an Eternal Ward that spellcasters typically use. So, make sure to have one hand and a shield weapon (sword or wand) with a shield equipped for one of the phases of the fight.

Lastly, if you’re a spellcaster, make sure to have the Eternal Chain Lightning spell. This can fill up the Dragon’s stun bar as well. Though not as good as stun arrow or parries, it’s something when the dragon comes into medium range. Eternal Chain Lightning is a new spell in Update 7 and there’s an eternal quest chain you must complete in Veilwater Basin to obtain. If you don’t have access to that, just use the consumable spells instead.
Best Armor

The final area will require some Frost Resistance so you don’t freeze to death. You most likely will have some armor pieces that automatically have this, but you can use food or consumables as a substitute, and have around 5 minutes or more of frost time.

One of the best pieces of gear for this fight is the Gemini Ring. This was reworked in Update 7 and now not only does life leech but extra damage to Fell. The “fell” Dragon will take a lot more damage using two of these rings and you’ll have a great life leech bonus. If you can afford the sustainability coming from your rings, get these from Moth’s Grove in the Springlands starter area.
If you have any fire resistance armor pieces that too can also help.
Best Consumables

The best consumables are listed below for this fight:
- Elixir (found): 20% damage against Fell. You will hit much harder vs. dragon.
- Ice Protection Lotion: +1 Ice Armor per Level for 30 min. Gives slight defensive boost.
- Superior Mana Potion (Alchemist): Restores +250 Mana. You should use Updraft and mana during phase where you avoid attack and you do not want to run out.
- Superior Health Potion (Alchemist): Restores +1000 Health. Be prepared to spam these if you get caught in damage.
- Improved Bandages (Hunter): +8% healing per second. This healing over time helps with dragons fire DOT damage and if you’re not below 50% health, use bandages first.
- Glimmer Gentian Tea (Farmer): +15% damage against fell. Another way to add damage to fell dragon.
- Beef Stew (Farmer): +240 health and +1 Frost Resistance. Good health buff plus it gives frost resistance so you don’t need to swap gear.
- Flask of the Fell (Alchemist): +20 Stamina for 30 min. You need a lot of stamina so every bit helps.
- Greater Shroud Survival Flash (Alchemist): +4 Min Time in the Shroud. You may get knocked into deadly shroud, so extra time is useful.
Extra Bonuses

Make sure to get every buff possible for this fight! This includes rest and comfort which give a massive boost your stamina and stamina regeneration. If you are dying over and over, build a small bit of comfort items at your base on Howling Peak so you get five minutes or so of rested after you die. This helps you jumping back into the fight with some rested stamina bonuses vs. nothing which makes a massive difference.
Second, make sure to pet your dog for the Paw’s Touch bonus. While this isn’t massive, a 25 health bonus is helpful. Vuk’ahrrrrr buff was recently nerfed and no longer gives melee damage. This was a totem you could build at your home. Now it gives damage to scavengers and isn’t relevant for this fight.
Best Skills for the Dragon
- Updraft (Assassin): this is a must have skill because you get knocked on the outside ring. If you cannot use mana to updraft (lift up slightly), you’re going to fall in a deadly shroud and die. Take this and Airborne to help with flying mechanics.
- Double Jump (Survivor): is needed during the second phase of the fight, where the boss shoots a red beam at you. Without double jump, you’ll have to eat the damage.
- Emergency Blink (Healer): Blink is helpful but Emergency Blink lets you break crowd control early. The bosses attacks will CC you, so this is essential if you get caught in one of it’s attacks.
- Backstab Mastery (Survivor): once the boss is on the ground, attack from the rear to get these two bonuses and increase damage.
- Fire Resistance (Wizard): if you are getting melted with fire damage, take the Wizard fire resist to lower damage.
- Skill Shot (Ranger): if you’re on a ranger you can aim for the head and increase damage with a bow.
- Multi-Shot + Spread + Trigger (Ranger): this helps with your stun arrows or explosive arrows, mainly for Archer builds.
Best Builds for This Fight
The three best builds for this fight are Bow, Wand, and Staff. The bow is by far the easiest because of multishot with Stun Arrows. You can almost 100% to 0 the boss without any mechanics because you stun it so quickly. Simply spam stun arrows. As it drops, swap to explosive then get the rear for huge damage.
The Wand is second best because you can use stun arrows to knock it down easy, then damage from your wand to melt the HP. Lastly, the Wizard with Chain Lightning or a new spell Eternal Lightning Channel. The Lightning Channel allows you to hold your attack down when the dragon is on the ground and melt HP with shock damage and hopefully the Soaked debuff.
Fell Dragon Youngling Mechanics
The Fell Dragon Youngling fight is broken into two sections: center and ring. During the intial phase, the boss will do a variety of attacks from the inside of the platform where you cannot reach it. After a shooting line of fire, the second phase will begin with the boss on the outside of the ring. Most of the mechanics and attacks are the same, but the most important being reflecting (perfect parrying) the fireballs. This only happens when the boss is in the center. Therefore, it’s your only time to fill the stun bar without using stun arrows and is critical especially on melee builds.
Fell Fire Meteors

The first mechanic you face is Fell Fire Meteors which are large fireballs that can be reflected. As one approaches, make sure to swap to a one-hand and shield (not eternal ward), and block a split second before the meteor hits you. This reflects back the meteor and fills up the stun bar massively. This mechanic is the only way to fill up his stun bar without range attacks, so melee, you get two meteors per phase only! Thus, make sure to bring a bow and stun arrows regardless of your build.
Fell Fire Breath Mechanic

The Fell Fire Breath mechanic happens when the boss sits up high in the middle platform and moves left to right (clockwise) breathing fire on the outer ring. Your goal is to not get caught in this fire. You can do this by jumping down into the draft, and avoiding the damage entirely. If you get caught, make sure to dodge with Emergency Blink right away as this will stun you.
Fell Fire Strafe Attack

This Fell Fire Strafe attack is how the boss transitions to different phases. He will shoot fire in front of himself and fly across the platform. Side step to avoid and prepare for a phase transition.
Fell Fire Beam

The Fell Fire Beam is where the boss is on the outer edge of the platform and shoots a beam of flame from left to right. You can double jump as the beam approaches to avoid damage. If you get caught, make sure to dodge and emergency blink to escape.
Wing Beat

The Wing Beat mechanic is when the boss shoots a massive red cloud that pushes you back. You are likely to get knocked off the platform and hopefully not into deadly shroud. This is where Updraft and Airborne skills are helpful to get you on a draft, float back up to the platform and re-enage with the boss.
Summon Fell Draconian Vultures

After the boss transitions to a new phase, expect multiple Fell Vultures to appear and damage you. Try to dispatch them quickly and focus your attention back on the boss.
Damage Phase

Once you fill the boss’s stun meter, he will fall to the ground to begin the damage phase. An important tip during this time is avoid being right on top of the boss when it lands. Otherwise, it will knock you back off of the platform and you will lose precious seconds of damage time.
Therefore, fill up stun with Stun Arrows, parry meteors, or chain lightning, then back off of the spot where the boss lands. Then, approach, but make sure to get the rear to trigger backstab damage. Unload every attack you have in a short 10-15 second window and repeat.
How to Kill the Fell Dragon Youngling
The best way to start the fight with the Fell Dragon Youngling is to prepare with food and consumables taking everything you can to increase health and fell damage. The start of the fight will involve the boss gliding down, making a big scene. During this time, you can land some Stun arrow shots while aiming. Once he is in the center of the island, expect the fire meteor phase to happen right away. It’s best to swap to a weapon and shield and try to reflect two meteors. Make sure you don’t stand where the meteors land as it will do damage passively. If you take damage, use a bandage immediately.
Next, you’ll want to swap back to a Bow with Stun Arrows or a Staff with Chain Lightning to fill up the stun bar. This is your number one priority the entire fight. Survive, stun, damage. Start firing at the boss and make sure to rotate if you can so you’re not directly facing him. This will prevent fire breath and strafe attacks from hitting you immediately. Once you see red flame run if you can and it’s best to go counter clockwise. That’s because the boss rotates clockwise with it’s attacks. If you get caught in a fire attack, break free with Emergency Blink. You can also jump off the edge and float with the gust until the mechanic is over.
Important note! You cannot leave too far from the main area. If you go back to the platform with the skeleton, the boss’s HP will reset. However, there are some cliffs and snow just outside the edge of the platform which you can land and not reset the boss. This is helpful if you need to regenerate stamina quickly without resetting the fight. You can also reset the fight if you get off to a bad start (reflecting meteors) and don’t want to chug 5,000 potions to beat the boss.
Fell Dragon Rewards and Loot

Below is what you can get for rewards and loot from defeating the Fell Dragon Youngling:
- Shroud Cores: 5
- Runes: Legendary or regular
- Fell Dragon Youngling Head: used to upgrade the flame altar

You can also craft the Fell Dragon Youngling Trophy with the head if you kill it multiple times. The highest quality is gold, giving +4 comfort which helps your house. Moreover, this is by far the largest of the trophies and an epic piece for your home.
