How to Strengthen the Flame to Level 9
Below is a TLDR list of how to get items needed to upgrade your Flame Altar to level 9. Look for specific details, pictures, locations, and how-to below this section:
- Survivors: Recrued from specific locations through Embervale, use quest to guide you.
- Spark: Found at Flame Shrines and Flame Sanctums through Embervale.
- Gold Ore: Drak enemies or underwater in Veilwater Basin
- Green Vitriol Dust: Crafted at the Laboratory
- Passionflower: Night time only in Veilwater Basin woods
- Aquamarine: Mined in Veilwater Basin
- Pearl: Inside clams or rare Drak drops
- Hydrak’Dal Head: Complete Vengeance Quest chain
Suvivors

You can find Survivors throughout the world of Embervale at specific locations. The key thing to note here is there are three types: Craftspeople, Assistants, and Villagers. Collect them all, place them with Summon and make sure they have a bed assigned. By now, you should have plenty of survivors, but look in your quest log for more locations if you don’t reach 14. The easiest source is assistants, who are plentiful throughout the world.
Spark

You can find Sparks throughout Embervale in Flame Shrines and Flame Sanctums. Each area has one or more obelisk that show you the locations with a golden flame on your map. These also respawn after a certain time, so you should be able to come back to previous areas and collect 60 needed for your Flame Altar upgrade. If not, check new zones and make sure you’ve visited every Flame Altar or Flame Sanctums in each area. Biomes vary on how many they contain with Kindlewaste having 4 and Albaneve Summits having 5.
Gold Ore

Gold Ore can be obtained by killing Drak enemies or underwater farming in Veilwater Basin. The simplest way is to kill enemies near the Dragondream Lake or just west of that location. You will find plenty of Drak around the area and they will contain a small amount of gold each.

You can also mine for Gold Ore around the same location, Dragondream lake. You will need a Mining Sieve tool, obtained via a questline in the new zone. Use a combination of both mining and killing Drak to get 60 Gold Ore. Beyond this, you can use the Gold Ore to smelt gold bars used for advanced crafting recipes.
Green Vitriol Dust

Green Vitriol Dust is a crafted ingredient made in the Laboratory. You will need water, iron dust and sulfur. Iron Dust is a new material made from the “Mill.” The Mill is a new production machine that you obtain early in the Veilwater Basin zone quest chain.

You setup a wind mill in or outside of water and place. You need Iron Bars which are made from the Blast Furnace with Iron Ore. Iron Ore and Coal is needed to craft Iron Dust. Iron Ore is plentiful in the Kindlewaste area, southeastern corner of the map.

The best place for Coal is the Mine near Rothstep northwest of the Albaneve Summits Ancient Spire. Inside a cave, you can find a massive amount of Coal and iron can be found nearby in this area as well.
Sulfur is also located in Kindlewaste or in Veilwater Basin. Combine 3 Sulfur, 2 Iron Dust, and 5 Water to make 5 Green Vitriol Dust. Do this until you have 60 and you are done.
Passionflower

The plant Passionflower can be found only at night in the Veilwater Basin forest areas. You will notice a pink glow, use that while flying high above to identify multiple plants to harvest. You won’t be able to plant these, so expect to use every night cycle as a time to walk around the woods collecting Passionflower. Once you collect 30, hold onto them and you are done.
Aquamarine

The material Aquamarine can be found in the Veilwater Basin area near rocks. You can find it throughout the zone, but the Dragondream Lake area near the start of the region has multiple spots on rocks around the water. Collect 60 Aquamarine ore and hold it.
Pearl

You can find Pearls by killing Drak or by looting Clams at the bottom of the water. Drak drops are random, and it’s hard to get them in bulk. The best way to get Pearls is near the Starfish Shores area in Veilwater Basin. You must travel north from the Ancient Spire, then up and around to locate this area. Southwest, you will find four to five clams each with one or more pearl.
Loot these pearls then wait for the timer to respawn. While waiting, you can kill Drak at temples to get a random chance at a drop. Expect this to be your biggest barrier to upgrading the altar. Save 30 pearls and do not use them. Note, mother of pearl is not the same thing and does not count!
The Hydrak’Dal Head

You must kill the Hydrak’dal to obtain the head needed to upgrade your altar. You can find it in a temple within the Veilwater Basin. Collect the Fisher Survivor to kick off a quest called Vengeance which eventually leads you to the temple. You can find a full guide with maps and details here, on how to collect the The Hydrak’Dal Head.
Once all of these things have been done, upgrade your altar and explore the final areas in Update 7!
