However, we’ve narrowed that list down to our top 10 favorite and best DPS 5-piece gear sets in the Elder Scrolls Online (ESO). This guide will include something for everyone: base game sets, crafting, trials, and dungeons.
Context is important in ESO gameplay. Depending on your combat style, reaction time, and content, your gear can vastly change. In fact, the top players in the game use a system that swaps gear in between fights! Now, you don’t need to get that specific, but in general, these sets below are the 10 best, and we explain why, how to use them, and how you can enjoy BIG DAMAGE!
This guide has been updated for ESO Update 48, Season of the Worm Cult Part 2.
Introduction to ESO DPS Sets
The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) offers an incredible variety of gear sets, but for any aspiring damage dealer, DPS sets are the backbone of your build. Whether you’re tackling dungeons, trials, or solo content, the right DPS set can make all the difference in your damage output. In ESO, DPS sets are designed to boost your ability to deal damage, enhance your stats, and complement your playstyle – whether you prefer magicka or stamina builds.
Understanding how these sets work and which ones best fit your character is essential for maximizing your effectiveness in the Elder Scrolls Online. In this guide, we’ll break down the top DPS sets, explain what makes them stand out, and help you choose the best options to elevate your performance in any content the Elder Scrolls has to offer.
Top 10 ESO DPS Sets Ranked
The best overall DPS sets are Ansuul’s Torment, Arms of Relequen, and Deadly Strike. These are all three medium sets, that produce incredible damage. Ansuul’s gives a flat 7% damage done to monsters in PvE, which is a massive bonus that doesn’t require any actions. Meanwhile, Arms of Relequen is one of the strongest single-target and parse sets in ESO, and it drops from the Cloudrest trial. Lastly, Deadly Strike, a base game set, adds 15% damage to channels and damage over time, perfect for specific class builds.
Many of the most powerful options are trial sets, which are obtained from group trial content. While heavy armor sets can be powerful for certain builds, the top 10 here focus on medium and light armor sets for maximum DPS. Some trial sets have a perfect version with additional bonuses, which can be obtained by completing veteran mode trials. Additionally, some sets are only available in normal mode or veteran mode, and the difficulty can affect the version and power of the set.
Below are the Top 10 DPS Sets ranked and explained why:
- Ansuul’s Torment: best overall damage set because flat bonus doesn’t require any action
- Arms of Relequen: highest single target DPS
- Deadly Strike: great base game, though specific to class and builds
- Sergeant’s Mail: best for one-bar Oakensoul heavy attack builds
- Sul-Xan’s Torment: incredible strong, but requires enemies to be killed every 30 seconds
- Order’s Wrath: best craftable set and gets you by 95% of ESO content
- Coral Riptide: arguably the highest damage, but requires you to manage your stamina
- Runecarver’s Blaze: extremely high DPS on specific damage over time (DOT) builds and Dragonknight’s
- Vicious Serpent and False Gods: two sets that are critical for solo arenas and gameplay overall
- Mechanical Acuity: best burst damage set, mainly used in solo arenas
Top 10 DPS Sets – Ranked & Explained
10. Mechanical Acuity

Mechanical Acuity
LVL 50 – CP 160
SET BONUS
(2 items) Adds 1096 Maximum Stamina
(3 items) Adds 1096 Maximum Magicka
(4 items) Adds 129 Weapon and Spell Damage
(5 items) When you deal non Critical Damage, you gain a stack of Mechanical Acuity for 4 seconds, granting you 20% Critical Strike chance per stack, up to once every 1 second and stacking up to 5 times. Upon reaching max stacks or after the effect ends, this effect cannot occur again for 25 seconds.
When it comes to burst damage in PvE or PvP, nothing beats Mechanical Acuity set. This craftable set builds stacks as you deal non critical damage. Each stack grants 20% critical strike chance. With a max of five stacks, you reach 100% critical chance and absolutely annihilate any enemy within seconds. This five piece set is ideal to run with one of the best monster helms for PvE, Balorgh.
With a Balorgh and Mechanical Acuity (PvP as well), you have the ultimate burst damage. In solo arenas, you save up your ulimate to 500, then when the boss appears, drop the house. Your weapon and spell damage, penetration, and critical chance skyrocket giving you the biggest tooltips you’ve seen. The downside of Mech Acuity? Well, it’s limited to burst situations where you can one, control the proc, and two can live with a 25 second downtime. However, it’s still one of the best 10 DPS five piece gear sets due to the sheer burst damage unleashed.
Mechanical Acuity Summary:
- Type: Craftable (six traits)
- Location: Clockwork City
- DLC Required: Clockwork City
- Best For: Solo Arenas boss kills
- Why It’s Meta: Melts bosses within seconds!
- Recommended Builds: Group DPS Builds
9. Vicious Serpent or False Gods

Vicious Serpent
LVL 50 – CP 160
SET BONUS
(2 items) Adds 657 Critical Chance
(3 items) Gain Minor Slayer at all times, increasing your damage done to Dungeon, Trial, and Arena Monsters by 5%.
(4 items) Adds 657 Critical Chance
(5 items) Adds 129 Weapon and Spell Damage, Reduces the cost of your Stamina Abilities by 8%. When an enemy you have recently damaged dies, you restore 2423 Stamina and gain Major Expedition for 8 seconds, increasing your Movement Speed by 30%. These effects can occur once every second.
If you’re playing in solo arenas like Veteran Vateshran Hollows or Veteran Maelstrom Arena, than resources are key. So too is speed and your time to get on the top 100 leaderboards. This is where Vicious Serpent or False Gods comes into play. Both of these trial sets are designed to give you a boost of speed and resources after a kill. In solo arenas, this is almost always triggering, allow you to blaze through the content and making your life MUCH easier.
The downside to these sets is, they help solo players, but require you to complete one of two trials. For the stamina based Vicious Serpent, players will need to complete Sanctum Ophidia (base game). Meanwhile, the magicka version, False God’s, will have players complete Sunspire and require the Elsweyr DLC. The one alternative is found within Withered Hands, a base game set that does give you health and magicka back. This is useful to pair with Mother’s Sorrows for those magicka based players that don’t have all the champion points to compete just yet.
Vicious Serpent or False Gods Summary in the Elder Scrolls Online:
| Vicious Serpent | False Gods Summary |
|---|---|
| Trial | Trial |
| Sanctum Ophidia | Sunspire |
| Base Game | Elsweyr DLC |
| Solo Arena Sustain | Solo Arena Sustain |
8. Runecarver’s Blaze

Runecarver’s Blaze
LVL 50 – CP 160
SET BONUS
(2 items) Adds 129 Weapon and Spell Damage
(3 items) Adds 129 Weapon and Spell Damage
(4 items) Adds 1487 Offensive Penetration
(5 items) Your damage over time effects deal an additional 368 Flame Damage on the third damage tick. This damage scales off your Weapon or Spell Damage and always applies the Burning status effect.
If you’re one of those players who loves damage over times (DOT), then Runecarver’s Blaze is your best five piece set option. It’s a dungeon set, so it’s easier to obtain than trial ones later on this list. It adds extra flame damage on the third DOT tick. Thus, the longer and more frequent your DOTs (and the more you have) the better the set will perform. Runecarver’s simply annihilates with a Dragonknight, using magicka or stamina as a build. Their super long lasting DOTs guarantee frequent procs. Moreover, you can get the Ardent Flame skill line now with any build thanks to subclassing!
The obvious downside to this five piece DPS gear set in ESO is, you need a lot of DOTs, like A LOT! If you’re not running a Dragonknight or other DOT heavy class and build, this five piece won’t outproduce others on this list. Therefore, it’s more of a specific set designed for Dragonknights. Therefore, use it for those types of builds and look towards Order’s Wrath for a crafting alternative.
Runecarver’s Blaze Summary in the Elder Scrolls Online:
- Type: Dungeon
- Location: Scrivener’s Hall
- DLC Required: Scribes of Fate
- Best For: Damage over Time and DK Builds
- Why It’s Meta: adds extra damage to DOT heavy builds
- Recommended Builds: Dragonknight
7. Coral Riptide

LVL 50 – CP 160
SET BONUS
(2 items) Adds 657 Critical Chance
(3 items) Gain Minor Slayer at all times, increasing your damage done to Dungeon, Trial, and Arena Monsters by 5%.
(4 items) Adds 1401 Offensive Penetration
(5 items) Increase your Weapon and Spell Damage by up to 740 based on your missing Stamina.
One could make an argument the highest DPS set in content for ESO is Coral Riptide. While that might be true, it’s hard to pull off, because the set rewards you for lower stamina pool. What top end players do is, purposefully “tank” or drain their stamina pool. While this might sound good on paper, in practice it’s incredibly annoying to “baby sit” your stamina constantly. Imagine before every PvE pull, dodge rolling three times to reach 25% stamina, then starting? Well that’s what you’re expected to do with Coral Riptide to take advantage of it’s massive five piece bonus.
If you want to use this powerful five piece DPS set, obtain it in High Isle via the Dreadsail Reef trial. The best way to use it is with a stamina heavy build that use almost entirely stamina costing abilities. This setup will ensure you’re just at that threshold of running out of resources while throwing in two to three magicka abilities if you get close to running out completely.
Coral Riptide Summary in the Elder Scrolls Online:
- Type: Trial
- Location: Dreadsail Reef
- DLC Required: High Isle
- Best For: Low stamina sustain DPS build
- Why It’s Meta: highest weapon and spell damage bonus depending on stamina levels
- Recommended Builds: Group DPS Builds
6. Order’s Wrath

Order’s Wrath
LVL 50 – CP 160
SET BONUS
(2 items) Adds 657 Critical Chance
(3 items) Adds 129 Weapon and Spell Damage
(4 items) Adds 657 Critical Chance
(5 items) Adds 943 Critical Chance, Increases your Critical Damage and Critical Healing by 8%.
The best overall crafting five piece DPS set is Order’s Wrath. Found in the High Isle chapter, requiring six traits, this is your best bet to get great damage without doing trials. The five piece set bonus is always “on” not requiring any babysitting of sources or specific proc chance. You gain high critical chance, critical damage, and critical healing. With this set, you want to run the Thief Mundus stone and a couple piece of light armor even on medium armor builds. That way you have good penetration due to the light armor passive.
The alternative to this set is Hunding’s Rage, or Mother’s Sorrow. Most player’s used the set Julianos until this arrived and immediately swapped both in PvE and PvP. It’s so good that, you can get roughly 90-95% of the damage output of a top tier trials five piece set, without the fuss of doing 12 player group PvE. But, if you can do trials, then there are still better options listed below.
Order’s Wrath Summary in the Elder Scrolls Online:
- Type: Craftable
- Location: High Isle and Amenos
- DLC Required: High Isle
- Best For: Non-trial gear builds
- Why It’s Meta: flat bonus to critical damage, chance and healing
- Recommended Builds: Solo Builds, Group Builds
5. Sul-Xan’s Torment

LVL 50 – CP 160
SET BONUS
(2 items) Adds 129 Weapon and Spell Damage
(3 items) Gain Minor Slayer at all times, increasing your damage done to Dungeon, Trial, and Arena Monsters by 5%.
(4 items) Adds 657 Critical Chance
(5 items) When an enemy you recently damaged dies, they leave behind a vengeful soul for 6 seconds. You can only create one vengeful soul at a time. Touching the soul increases your Critical Chance by 2160 and your Critical Damage by 12% for 30 seconds.
Sul-Xan’s Torment is like an enhanced Order’s Wrath, giving massive bonuses to critical hit chance and critical damage. The only issue is, you must kill an enemy then walk over a small soul left behind on the ground. The soul, is a small blueish visual indicator and it’s triggered on enemies you kill. Meaning, it’s very easy to obtain the soul on melee kills, but can get much more complex on range builds and so on.
You can obtain Sul-Xan’s Torment in Rockgrove trial, in the Blackwood Chapter. Sul-Xan’s Torment is best used with boss fights that spawn additional enemies reliably. Most boss fights have an “add” phase where critters come out and can be reliability killed. Same with dungeons. However, you should shy away from the set if playing range, or you’re unfamiliar with mechanics of the PvE content.
Sul-Xan’s Tormet Summary in the Elder Scrolls Online:
- Type: Trial
- Location: Rockgrove
- DLC Required: Blackwood
- Best For: AOE fights with boss
- Why It’s Meta: huge critical damage and chance increase for 30 seconds
- Recommended Builds: Group DPS Builds
4. Sergeant’s Mail

Sergeant’s Mail
LVL 50 – CP 160
SET BONUS
(2 items) Adds 1206 Maximum Health
(3 items) Adds 129 Health Recovery
(4 items) Adds 129 Weapon and Spell Damage
(5 items) When you deal damage with a Heavy Attack, you gain a stack of Sergeant’s Focus for 5 seconds, increasing the damage of your Heavy Attacks by 645 per stack. This effect can occur once every second and stacks up to 4 times.
If you love heavy attack builds, the combination of Oakensoul and Sergeant’s Mail is still the best in ESO PvE. The strength of Sergeant’s Mail is, it just requires heavy attacks every five seconds. Each stack, up to four, can increase your heavy attack by 645! Another benefit to Sergeant’s Mail is its a base game set, and can be obtained easily in the dungeons of Wayrest Sewers one or two.
The trick to using Sergeant’s Mail is maintaining the stacks, with constant heavy attacking. The set says “heavy attack,” therefore it doesn’t require a “fully charged heavy attack to build the stack. In fact, when you’re attacking you can see the icon light up before the heavy attack is completed. Thus, you need to constantly maintain the stacks by holding down your attack button, ideally for a fully charged, but even a “medium” charge or one that is briefly longer than a light attack will keep this bonus rolling.
Outside of the Oakensoul Heavy Attack build, there isn’t much use for Sergeant’s Mail otherwise, we’d rank it higher on our Top 10 Best DPS 5-Piece Sets in ESO!
Sergeant’s Mail Summary in the Elder Scrolls Online:
- Type: Dungeon
- Location: Wayrest Sewers I, Wayrest Sewers II
- DLC Required: None
- Best For: Heavy Attack Builds (Oakensoul)
- Why It’s Meta: Proc adds massive heavy attack damage
- Recommended Builds: Heavy Attack Builds, One Bar Builds
3. Deadly Strike

Deadly Strike
LVL 50 – CP 160
SET BONUS
(2 items) Adds 129 Weapon and Spell Damage
(3 items) Adds 657 Critical Chance
(4 items) Adds 129 Weapon and Spell Damage
(5 items) Increase the damage your Damage Over Time and Channeled Abilities do by 15%.
The sleeper item set on our set on our top 10 Best DPS 5-Piece Sets is Deadly Strike. It comes from PvP, Cyrodiil at the elite vendor so much people don’t consider this a “meta” set. However, it adds 15% more damage to DOTs and channeled abilities. Channeled abilities specifically can be the main skill of certain builds and classes like the Templar. Thus, almost everything you do with the Templar benefits from Deadly Strike. Not only that, but Dragonknight’s who use almost entirely DOT rather than spammable attacks will see this do incredible damage.
If you’re a magicka based damage dealer, you want to use Deadly Strike on your jewelry and weapons. The set can activate when you need it, on your front attack bar. Then, you can run a Maelstrom Arena Perfect Inferno or something else on your back bar. This keeps your build efficient, give you the damage when you need it, spamming Biting Jabs!
Deadly Strike Summary in the Elder Scrolls Online:
- Type: Cyrodiil
- Location: PvP Vendor within Cyrodiil
- DLC Required: None, base game
- Best For: Templar or Dragonknight
- Why It’s Meta: adds 15% damage to main spammable and DOTs
- Recommended Builds: Templar Builds, Arcanist Builds
2. Arms of Relequen

Arms Of Relequen
LVL 50 – CP 160
SET BONUS
(2 items) Adds 657 Critical Chance
(3 items) Gain Minor Slayer at all times, increasing your damage done to Dungeon, Trial, and Arena Monsters by 5%.
(4 items) Adds 657 Critical Chance
(5 items) Your Light and Heavy attacks apply a stack of harmful winds to your target for 5 seconds. Harmful winds deal 52 Physical Damage per stack every 1 second. This effect can stack once every half second, up to 10 times and scales off the higher of your Weapon or Spell Damage.
The set Arms of Relequen ranked second overall on our best DPS five piece set list for ESO. The reason why is, the bonus from harmful winds stacks. At 10 stacks, the damage is mind blowing single target. Thus, it’s meant as a parse dummy five piece setup, or a boss killer. However, there are a lot of downsides with Relequen’s that you need to understand.
Relequen’s will not be effective in AOE fights, mobile fights, or fights you cannot reliably keep your 10 stacks up. Meaning, if you aren’t perfect at light attack weaving, the stacks fall off, and thus your overall damage. This gear set is specifically designed for players who have extremely tight weaves, know the mechanics, and are invested in 100% single target five piece.
Therefore, it doesn’t rank number one because it’s specific to one scenario, and PvE has many types of content.
Arms of Relequen Summary in the Elder Scrolls Online:
- Type: Trial
- Location: Cloudrest
- DLC Required: Summerset
- Best For: single target bosses or parsing
- Why It’s Meta: the stacks add the most amount of DPS for single target
- Recommended Builds: Group DPS Builds
1. Ansuul’s Torment

LVL 50 – CP 160
SET BONUS
(2 items) Adds 657 Critical Chance
(3 items) Gain Minor Slayer at all times, increasing your damage done to Dungeon, Trial, and Arena Monsters by 5%.
(4 items) Adds 1487 Offensive Penetration
(5 items) Increases your damage done against monsters by 7%. When you interrupt an enemy, you increase your damage done against monsters by an additional 7% for 10 seconds.
The best overall five piece DPS set is Ansuul’s Torment because it adds 7% damage without any caveats. You don’t need to be perfect at light attack weaving, you don’t need to drain your stamina, you don’t need to jump up and down then do a back flip five times to get it to proc. Simply put it on, and reap the rewards! An added bonus is Ansuul’s Torment gives you another percentage DPS jump if you bash.
Ansuul’s Torment can be found in Sanity’s Edge, Necrom Chapter trial. This isn’t the easiest set to get but well worth it. Even magicka users can use the set with jewelry and two body pieces. Or, you can put it on your front dual wield bar and activate it when needed. Moreover, the set works with any other proc sets like Whorl of Depth or Pillars of Nirn. Thus, you can mix and max armor types and have the best of both worlds. Truly, nothing beats Ansuul’s Torment for all around PvE DPS and we think you should try it!
Ansuul’s Torment Summary in the Elder Scrolls Online:
- Type: Trial
- Location: Sanity’s Edge (Necrom)
- DLC Required: Necrom Chapter
- Best For: General content for PvE
- Why It’s Meta: easiest way to increase your DPS
- Recommended Builds: Group DPS Builds
Top DPS Sets for Magicka Users
Magicka users in ESO have access to some of the most powerful DPS sets in the game, each tailored to boost spell damage, critical chance, and overall effectiveness in both single-target and AoE damage scenarios. Sets like Mother’s Sorrow are a staple for beginner or leveling magicka builds, offering a massive increase to critical chance, which is essential for landing those high-damage spells.
If you’re looking to ramp up your spell damage even further, Mantle of Siroria is a fantastic choice, rewarding you with stacking spell damage bonuses for maintaining proper positioning and keeping up your light and heavy attacks. For magicka users who want both extra damage and better resource management, False God’s Devotion is a top-tier magicka set, providing sustain and a solid DPS boost, especially in longer fights or solo content.
By combining these magicka sets with the right abilities and rotation, magicka users can excel in both single-target boss fights and large group AoE damage situations, making them a force to be reckoned with in any encounter.
Top DPS Sets for Stamina Users
Stamina DPS builds in ESO have a wealth of options when it comes to maximizing their damage output. Sets like Hunding’s Rage are an easy to craft option, offering a reliable boost to weapon damage that benefits nearly every stamina build.
For players looking to increase their critical chance and push their single-target and AoE damage even higher, Berserking Warrior is a strong contender, stacking critical chance and critical damage as you deal damage. If you want to add a unique twist to your build,
Velidreth is a monster set that not only increases your penetration but also unleashes a devastating AoE proc, perfect for clearing large groups of enemies. These stamina DPS sets can be mixed and matched to suit your preferred playstyle, whether you’re focusing on single-target boss damage or mowing down waves of enemies. With the right combination, stamina users can achieve great DPS and remain competitive in all types of PvE content.
How to Choose the Right Set for Your Build
When it comes to picking the right set, you need to balance all the aspects of ESO PvE: AoE, single target, survivability, and resource sustain. Some sets provide powerful buffs like Major Berserk, Major Slayer, or Minor Force, which can significantly boost your damage output. Sets like Elemental Catalyst can boost group critical damage, while others are designed to maximize uptime of status effects for increased DPS. Certain sets, such as Master Architect, require proper positioning and coordination to maximize group buffs.
Just because someone in Discord says x, y, z set is the meta, doesn’t mean they or you can use it effectively. If you cannot perfectly time light attacks, skip Arms of Relequen. If you cannot source a sweaty trials gear set, go with Order’s Wrath. Be honest with yourself, your skills, and ability to obtain item sets. Some sets are obtained from specific content like Dragonstar Arena or Falkreath Hold dungeon, and access to some dungeons may require DLC such as the Reach DLC. Just realize, Order’s Wrath and others AREN’T as good as #1, but you’re going to be 90% there and that’s good enough.
