All ESO Class Updates Coming in 2026
ZeniMax Online Studios, the studio responsible for shaping class updates and overall game direction, is starting a long-term overhaul of ESO’s class system in 2026, focused on making each class feel more distinct, more cohesive, and more rewarding to play. The studio is aiming to reinforce the unique identity of ESO’s classes, ensuring that each class stands out both visually and functionally.
This new initiative, called the Class Identity Refresh, is designed to address two major pain points players have been hammering on for years: shaky class identity and the growing power gap between subclassing – which was introduced in a previous update and has impacted class balance – and “pure” class builds.
There is a clear need for better differentiation between ESO classes to maintain balance and preserve the unique feel of each. Unique characters and their roles are central to the game’s identity, and this update seeks to restore that focus. The Combat Team has framed it as a multi-update effort that will roll out class-by-class over time, starting with Dragonknight.
Why ZOS Is Refreshing Class Identity Now
In late 2025, ESO leadership openly acknowledged that parts of the year did not land, including the Writhing Wall event not meeting player expectations and the game’s new subclassing system exposing (and amplifying) class identity issues. They also committed to focusing more on the core game experience in 2026, with clearer communication and more follow-through between what’s said and what ships.
The Class Identity Refresh is the Combat Team’s planned response: fix the foundations so ESO’s classes can hold up long-term, even as new systems and metas evolve over time.
What Class Identity Means in ESO
ZOS defines class identity as what makes a class meaningfully different from the others. Not just in DPS numbers, but in what the class is, how it expresses power, how it looks, and what it tends to excel at (and not excel at).
Pure classes are specialized builds that focus entirely on a single class’s core abilities and identity, emphasizing the unique strengths and playstyles of each class without relying on hybridization or cross-class synergies.
The Elder Scrolls Online further anchors class identity around two key pillars: Source of Power and Power Fantasy.
The devs’ efforts to balance pure and subclassing builds are crucial, ensuring that each class’s unique abilities remain distinct and are not overshadowed by hybrid builds or overpowered cross-class combinations.
Strengthening other class aspects is also important to improve role differentiation and allow for greater versatility in roles such as Tank, Healer, and DPS.
Source of Power
ESO defines Source Of Power as where the class’s power comes from in lore terms (what makes them more than a regular person in Tamriel), and how that origin should inform ability design and themes.
Power Fantasy
Power Fantasy, on the other hand, describes how that power is delivered in moment-to-moment gameplay (DoTs, burst, AoE patterns, pacing, visuals, audio, and the general “feel” of being that class).
The ultimate goal is that your ESO class choice should be felt in your kit and in your gameplay rhythm, not just in your character select screen.
Imagine unleashing reimagined abilities and experiencing a renewed sense of strength and identity every time you enter combat after the class update.
The Big Problem: Subclassing vs Pure Class Builds
ZOS’ blunt takeaway is that subclassing is currently stronger than pure classing “by a large margin,” and that ESO’s original class skill line designs were not built with subclassing in mind. We have yet to hear how this will be fully addressed. My hope is that ESO Update 49 takes some steps to empower “Pure Class” builds (builds that use only class skills lines from the original class, not subclassing).
ESO’s new Subclassing System, starting with the Season of the Worm Cult, has many built-in problems that the Dev team either didn’t have time to address during the system’s initial rollout, or they missed completely.
- Skill lines being too role-loaded (one line having too many “must-have” tools for a role)
- Older abilities and passive designs are not holding up under the new system and getting left out of the mix for most content
- Large imbalances between what different class skill lines provide
These issues can significantly impact performance in PvE and PVP content, especially in veteran dungeons and trials, where class balance and skill line effectiveness are crucial for success.
The Class Identity Refresh should attempt to modernize these foundations so both subclassing and pure class builds can exist without one being obviously the best choice in all scenarios. I talked about the differences more in my recent video on Subclassing.
Core Goals for the Class Identity Refresh
ZOS laid out a set of goals that will guide each class update:
- Stronger, more distinct class identities that feel fun and rewarding
- Better balance between pure classing and subclassing
- More variety and clearer value across each class’s skill lines (so one line does not do everything)
- Ongoing use of player feedback and in-game data to shape decisions
- Address power outliers and balance issues as they go, with an emphasis on functional and mathematical changes before visuals and audio upgrades
They’ve also reiterated a long-term vision that each class should be viable in any role (such as healer, tank, or damage dealer), even if not all options are equally optimal.
What ZOS Says Will Actually Change
While the exact patch notes will come later, the Combat Team previewed the kinds of changes players should expect:
- Reorganizing class skill lines – This can include moving abilities or passives so each line has clearer identity and value, and so role power is not overly concentrated.
- More benefits for sticking with your core class lines – This is the “pure classing should feel strong again” part, without deleting subclassing.
- Decentralizing role-specific power – Instead of one skill line containing every tool needed for tanking, healing, or damage, the tools get spread out so choices matter and subclass stacking is less dominant.
- Modernization, not just nerfs – ZOS explicitly says the goal is not “necessarily to nerf,” but to make abilities and passives punchier with better nuance so subclassing does not completely dominate. That said, I do expect to see some ability nerfs in Update 49!
These upcoming class reworks sound exciting and could have a major impact on gameplay and class identity. Stay tuned for more info as official patch notes and further details are released.

Rollout Plan and Order of Class Updates
The ESO Class Identity Refresh plans to update classes one at a time over several updates, starting with the classes that need the most modernization and balance work first. The current stated order is:
- Dragonknight
- Warden
- Sorcerer
- Templar
- Nightblade
- Necromancer
- Arcanist
ZOS also notes this order can change based on ongoing needs.

Dragonknight Is the First Class
According to the Dev Team, Dragonknight Class Updates come first because it’s foundational and needs extensive work. ZOS shared examples that show what their “refinement vs reconfiguring” approach looks like.
Refinement example:
Dragonknights are framed as attrition warriors. That identity can be reinforced through DoT behavior changes like shorter durations with higher damage per tick, plus ramping mechanics that build over the course of a fight. One example is a new Avalanche passive in Earthen Heart that builds a stacking damage bonus while in combat, but can be lost if you drop pressure.
Reconfiguring example:
ZOS describes Dragonknight flames as “ravenous” and tied to resource management, with the idea that the class should need fuel and decision-making rather than simply outlasting everything. One example they gave is a reworked Inhale that moves to Ardent Flame and restores a percent of missing resources over time before triggering the explosion.
Even if these specifics change before release, the examples are useful because they show the direction: identity-first mechanics, then balance tuning, then presentation updates.
New Content and Features Arriving with the Class Refresh
The Class Identity Refresh in Elder Scrolls Online is set to deliver a wave of new content and features that will redefine how players experience their favorite classes. One of the most anticipated changes is the overhaul of class skill lines, with each class receiving more specialized and unique abilities that reinforce their core identity. For example, the Dragonknight will gain access to a new skill line centered on attrition warfare, empowering players to excel in sustained combat with potent damage-over-time effects and robust defensive tools. This approach ensures that every class skill line feels distinct, making class identity a central part of gameplay. With these changes, the Class Identity Refresh promises to breathe new life into Elder Scrolls Online, offering both veteran and new players exciting ways to engage with their class and the world of Tamriel.
Community and Player Feedback on the Class Identity Refresh
The response from the Elder Scrolls Online community to the Class Identity Refresh has been overwhelmingly positive, with many players expressing renewed excitement for their favorite classes. Pure class players, in particular, have voiced their appreciation for the renewed focus on class identity, feeling that the changes will finally allow them to play the way they want without being pressured into subclassing for optimal performance. As one DK main put it, “I’m excited to see the changes to the Dragonknight class, it’s about time we got some love!” This sentiment is echoed across forums and social media, where players are sharing their hopes and ideas for how the refresh will impact their gameplay.
Of course, the community is also actively discussing the potential impact on game balance, with some players raising concerns about whether certain classes might become too powerful or if the meta will shift dramatically. However, the overall direction of the class identity refresh is seen as a positive step for Elder Scrolls Online, with many players praising the development team for listening to feedback and prioritizing the core experience. The sense of collaboration between the community and the team has fostered optimism that the game will become more fun and rewarding for everyone, regardless of their preferred class or playstyle.
Update Timeframe
ZOS has said this initiative will span multiple updates and that timelines may shift. They also said they will share deeper details as each class comes closer to its update window, with regular updates along the way
They also hosted (and referenced) community Q&A around the topic and stated there would be follow-up FAQ documentation.
What This Means for ESO Players in 2026
If you prefer pure class builds, the stated goal is that “pure classing” should feel strong and satisfying again, with enough power and tools inside your own class kit to reach your goals, without needing to default into the same subclass meta every patch.
If you like subclassing, that feature is not being removed. The goal is to keep the freedom and creativity found via Subclassing builds, but shrink the power gap so subclassing is a choice, not a requirement. Steam Store
For the overall meta, expect meaningful ability and passive movement, skill line reshuffling, and some role tool redistribution across class kits. That kind of change usually creates temporary chaos but eventually settles into a healthier long-term structure (assuming the execution matches the philosophy). Only time will tell!
