ESO Challenge Difficulty Overview
The Elder Scrolls Online Challenge Difficulty system finally arrives in ESO Update 50! But what is it?
With Challenge Difficulty, players can make enemies deal more damage while also making themselves deal less damage. This system essentially makes monsters stronger while also making the player character weaker. Four Ranks will exist for Challenge Difficulty upon release with different rewards and challenge unlocking at each tier.

How Does Challenge Difficulty Work?
To get started with ESO Challenge Difficulty, all players need to do is open their character sheet. From there, select the Challenge Difficulty level you want to try and that’s it! The enemies that you face will automatically be adjusted once you confirm and exit your character sheet!
Note: Challenge Difficulty can only be changed in Overland Zones, including delves and public dungeons and quest instances. Challenge Difficulty can not be used in instanced zones such as group dungeons, solo or group trials or in any PvP zone.
ESO Challenge Difficulty Levels
The four Challenge Difficulty levels are: Adventurer, Seasoned, Master, and Vestige.
- Adventurer: This is the current Challenge Difficulty and default within the game. There is no associated effect, and all rewards are as they are now. If you like how Overland content currently operates, then this is the difficulty that is right for you.
- Seasoned: You will take 100% more damage from monsters and do 50% less damage. You will receive 50% more gold and 20% more experience from monsters.
- Master: You will take 300% more damage from monsters and do 65% less damage. You will receive 100% more gold and 75% more experience from monsters.
- Vestige: This will be the most difficult option at launch. You will take 600% more damage from monsters and will deal 80% less damage. You will receive 200% more gold and 100% more experience from monsters.
What Does Challenge Difficulty Feel Like?
With Challenge Difficulty enabled, players will take much more damage from Monsters while also dealing far less damage to them in return. This essentially makes fights take longer, but also makes players pay attention to fight mechanics where they generally didn’t need to in the past. Red circles and boss heavy attacks will need to be dodged or blocked because if they are not they will easily one-shot you, especially at Master and Vestige levels.
All in all, Challenge Difficulty makes combat feel more engaging, slower-paced, and strategic, which I think is a good thing. Remember, this is also an optional system, so if you prefer Overland and quest zones without any increased difficulty modifiers that’s fine too!

Other Notes on Challenge Difficulty
Currently, ESO Companions are not affected at all by your Challenge Difficulty selection. This means even if an enemy can one-shot you on Vestige difficulty, your Companion will take and deal damage as normal. This potentially makes Companions more valuable if you are trying to push through content at higher challenge ranks though whether this is considered “cheating” is open for debate.
Also, players in your surrounding area may not be using the same challenge difficulty level as you, or may not use the system at all, meaning what takes you more time to complete may be trivial for them. This reflects ESO being an MMO where you can play with other players in the same zone.
Tips for Surviving Challenge Difficulty
I recommend tweaking your Build to help you survive ESO’s higher Challenge Difficulty levels. Some ways you can update your build for Challenge Difficulty include:
- Use a Companion for healing or tanking
- Put 32-64 Attribute Points into Health
- Put more Health Glyphs on Armor pieces, particularly the “big pieces” which are Head, Chest, and Legs
- Use more defensive Champion Points such as
- Use defensive sets such as Hexos Ward
- Use defensive Mythic Items including The Ring of the Pale Order or the Esoteric Environment Greaves

Future Updates
It’s important to remember that ESO Update 50 is only the first test of Challenge Difficulty, and that it will likely change in the future. Personally, I hope that the ESO dev team adds even more rewards to this system other than just increased gold and experience. Some sort of actual reward system will make Challenge Difficulty more engaging overall. Some examples could be unique currencies, improved set drops or quality drops or even new item sets. I will continue to provide my own feedback and I hope you do too.
ESO Challenge Difficulty FAQ
1. Do you need a DLC or ESO Plus to use Challenge Difficulty?
No. Challenge Difficulty is free for all players and available from level 1 with no DLC required.
2. Where do you go to change your Challenge Difficulty setting?
Open your character sheet, select the Challenge Difficulty tier you want, and confirm. The change applies immediately, though there is a short cooldown so you can’t switch between ranks instantly.
3. Does Challenge Difficulty work in group dungeons, trials, or PvP?
No. It only applies to Overland zones, including delves, public dungeons, and quest instances. Group dungeons, solo and group trials, and all PvP zones are excluded entirely.
4. Does your Challenge Difficulty setting affect other players around you?
No. The system applies a personal debuff to your character only, so players in the same zone can each run different difficulty settings without affecting one another.
5. Are Companions affected by Challenge Difficulty?
No. Companions deal and take damage as normal regardless of your difficulty setting, which makes them more useful at higher tiers where enemies can one-shot you.
6. What rewards do you get for using higher Challenge Difficulty tiers?
Each tier above Adventurer increases gold and XP from monster kills, up to 200% more gold and 100% more XP at Vestige. Players can also complete achievements related to the Challenge Difficulty system in ESO Update 50, earning additional titles and dye colors.
7. Which difficulty tier should you start with if you are new to the system?
Start with Seasoned, which doubles your incoming damage and cuts your outgoing damage by 50%. Most builds handle it without major changes, and it is a meaningful step up from Adventurer without the punishing one-shot mechanics that appear at Master and Vestige.
