ESO Warden Rework/Refresh Summary
The Warden class is next in line for a Class Refresh on ESO, but recent restructuring and layoffs at Zeimax Online Studios have forced developers to abandon their original timeline for testing and release. Recently, the ESO Development Team posted a news article with an update on the Warden timeline and some of the specific changes they’ve been working on.
Although an official release date hasn’t been announced, the Warden class refresh will bring changes to skills that reflect a more cohesive class identity. One that focuses on nature, animals, ice/frost abilities, and the Warden as a protector of the natural world.
Warden Rework Timeline
As of the first of September, the ESO development team has not committed to a specific release date for the Warden Class Refresh. While this can partially be attributed to recent layoffs, the development team also referenced their experience with community feedback and adjustment periods during testing of the Dragonknight and Werewolf class refreshes.
Taking in a lot of community feedback on changes, reviewing them internally, and then potentially making additional adjustments to reflect that feedback takes time. It sounds as though the development team wants to take that extra workload into account going forward, which could also impact Class Refresh timelines.
New Class Theme and Identity (Seasons)

The major focus driving changes for the Warden is class identity. The Warden class was released with the Morrowind chapter in the summer of 2017, and at the time much of their thematic look came from the zone. This upcoming class refresh will give them a much stronger focus on the following four pillars:
- Nature magic
- Animals
- Ice-themed abilities
- Clear identity as protector of the natural world
With this Class Refresh the developers are looking to give the Warden a unified visual identity and theme that centers around a stronger tie to nature’s seasonal rhythm. As the message from the developer states: “Rather than treating different class themes as separate experiences, we’re exploring ways to weave them together through gameplay that connects nature’s seasons, animals, and frost into a unified whole.”
Confirmed Warden Skill Changes
With all of that in mind, the developers have revealed some exciting specifics on some of the changes they are making to Warden abilities. Read on to see the new ideas the developers have for the Scorch, Living Vines, Lotus Flower, and Betty Netch abilities!
Scorch

Currently in game, using the Scorch ability will “Stir a group of shalk that attack” and deal magic damage. Shalk are large, aggressive beetles found in Morrowind, and therefore are tied in closely with the theme of the zone.
The new design of Scorch will have the Warden call forth a Gryphon, which will appear in a burst of flight from a summoning sigil to attack an enemy directly in its path.
Lotus Flower

The Lotus Flower is an ability found in the Green Balance Skill line. With its blessing, you or a nearby ally can gain buffs and healing. The visual look of the current lotus is of a glowing green lotus flower, open in bloom.
In the redesign of this ability, the developers state that the “Petals (will) correspond with each of the seasons and various morphs.” They don’t reveal specifically how this will work. We’ll have to wait and see if the real world calendar year will effect the visual of the ability, or if certain seasons will be restricted to certain morphs.
Living Vines/Spriggan Summoning

Living Vines is also an ability found in the Green Balance Skill line, and casting it produces vines that heal you or an ally over time.
Like Scorch, this ability will have a much larger visual overhaul that will also include a name change. Instead of vines, you will summon a Spriggan who will provide healing, and during the animation the creature appears to also have leaves that reflect the seasons.
Betty Netch

The last ability that the developers have revealed their plans for is the Betty Netch, which when summoned provides useful attack buffs and also helps remove debuffs.
While the basic idea of the skill will remain, the visuals will change in a way that the developers hope is less distracting for players. Currently, when summoned a beam of light would ‘attach’ the Betty Netch to you as it hovered in the air nearby. In the redesign, the Betty Netch will be smaller, and it will float around you in a circle.
Conclusion
Although it may be disappointing to still not have an exact date for the release of the Warden class refresh, it is very exciting to get a preview of some of the changes and details that the developers are working on. Despite the rough weeks this summer, it is encouraging to see the devs reaching out to the community and keeping us informed as much as they can. Keep an eye out here for any and all future updates on the Warden class refresh in ESO!
