As you journey through Tamriel, you’ll quickly realize that having a mount can make a huge difference in your gameplay experience. Not only do they make traveling faster and easier, but they can also provide useful bonuses and customization options. However, getting your first mount in ESO can be a bit confusing for new players. In this article, we’ll guide you through the process of acquiring your first mount, as well as the various ways to improve and customize it to suit your needs. Let’s get started!

Mount Basics in ESO
Before we get started there are a few basic facts you need to be aware of. First, you need to understand that Mounts are collectibles in ESO. This means that once you earn any mount for the first time you never have to earn it again, and you can use that same Mount for any other character on your ESO Account or even for your summoned Companions.
It’s also important to note that all mounts in the game function identically, regardless of their source of acquisition or type. This means that all Mounts in ESO have the same base rate of Mount Speed, the same amounts of Stamina, and the same Carry Capacity. Later in this article, you’ll discover ways to enhance your mount’s capabilities.
How to get a mount in ESO
There are several different types of mounts you can get in The Elder Scrolls Online.
Ways to get a Mount in ESO:
- Reach Level 10
- Purchase from Stablemasters
- Quest Rewards
- Antiquities
- Trials
- Events
- Promotions
- Crowns and Endeavors
1. Reach level 10
Once you reach Level 10 for the first time in The Elder Scrolls Online you’ll be rewarded with a free Sorrel Horse. While basic in appearance, this mount is a great starting option to get you moving faster across Tamriel. You should immediately start Rider Training as well, which we’ll cover more in detail below.

2. Purchase from Stablemasters
Aside from your free Sorrel Horse, you can also purchase the Midnight Steed, Bay Dun Horse, or Brown Paint Horse from Stablemasters for 42,700 Gold each. Stablemasters are located in every major city in the game and are used quite frequently by players to train up their Riding capabilities, however, these horses are not purchased that frequently as they are essentially just a reskin of the FREE Sorrel Horse players obtain at Level 10.

3. Mounts from Quest Rewards in ESO
One of the most impressive mounts that can be obtained in ESO comes from completing story quests in the new chapter zone of Necrom. To unlock this you’ll need to complete all the main story sections of the chapter as well as unlock other achievements in the zone such as visiting notable locations and completing Delves and Public Dungeons.

4. Mounts from Antiquities in ESO
For those seeking more visually unique mounts, the Ebon Dwarven Wolf requires you to find and scry multiple Antiquity leads in the Greymoor Chapter DLC in Western Skyrim to complete. This mount is impressive, but also requires a massive commitment, with 17 total Leads that need acquiring!

5. Trial Mount Rewards in ESO
Multiple mounts can be earned in-game by completing ESO Trials on the hardest difficulty (Veteran) while also completing the most challenging achievements. These mounts are a true showcase of your skill, so be sure to show them off when you acquire them!
The Champion Senche Lion requires you to complete multiple achievements in the Sunspire trial, including completing the tricky trifecta challenge (Under 30 minutes with no Party Deaths and on Hardmode).
The Sul-Xan Fleshripper is currently the hardest mount to earn, requiring the completion of many achievements within the Rockgrove trial, on top of completing a trifecta challenge.

6. Event Mounts in ESO
Event mounts are unique mounts you can earn during events such as the Jester’s Festival, where you can earn Event Tickets for completing daily quests to purchase pieces that you assemble to build the unique mount. The most widely known Event Mounts in ESO are the Indrik Mounts.

7. Promotional and Special Event Mounts in ESO
It’s also possible to get unique mounts by tuning into Zenimax Online streams on Twitch with your Twitch Prime linked to your ESO account, such as the Noweyr Steed mount (see below). Most pre-orders for ESO Chapters also come with new mounts of some kind to sweeten the deal and push players into early purchases.

8. Crown Crate, Crown Gems, and Seals Of Endeavor Mounts
It’s worth mentioning that some of the most fantastic-looking mounts in ESO can only be obtained by spending real-life money on Crown Crates and potentially converting unwanted items to Crown Gems. An alternative was recently added to the game in the form of Seals of Endeavors, which allow players to earn the same items, including Mounts, by accumulating Daily and Weekly Endeavor points. Note Radiant Apex mounts typically cost around 16,000 Seals Of Endeavors, so earning enough of these to purchase a mount outright could take months if not years!

How to summon your Mount in ESO
Once you have obtained a mount in ESO, you must summon it in order to use it. To do so follow the steps below.
- Ensure that your desired mount is selected. You can do this by navigating to the Mounts section in the Collections menu, where you can equip or change your mount if you have unlocked multiple.
- To summon your selected Mount, on Xbox, press and hold the View button, on PlayStation, press and hold the Touchpad, or on PC, press the H key.
- To dismount, use the same buttons as above or you can crouch, block, or use an ability to dismount immediately.
Note: While mounted, you can sprint and jump using the same buttons as when on foot.
How to Improve Mount Speed, Stamina, and Carrying Capacity
Once per day, players can visit a Stablemaster and pay a small amount of gold to purchase an increase to one of three mount-related attributes: Speed, Stamina, and Capacity.
- Speed: Increases your maximum speed while mounted.
- Stamina: Bolsters the endurance of your mount and allows it to withstand more damage before getting dismounted. This attribute is particularly advantageous for players who intend to engage in PVP within Cyrodiil.
- Capacity: Augments the storage capacity of your mount, which expands the number of items you can carry.
Generally speaking, upgrading your Speed and Capacity provides the earliest advantages to players. Thus, it is recommended to focus on enhancing either of these attributes each day.
Passives that Improve Mount Speed
Enhancing your riding skills in Elder Scrolls Online isn’t limited to daily mount upgrades. In fact, there is a fast and simple way to improve your mount through the use of an Alliance War passive called Continuous Attack. This passive skill can be found in the Assault skill line.
To unlock the Continuous Attack passive, you must first participate in some PvP. We recommend simply queuing for a random battleground as it’s faster and less complicated than going to Cyrodiil and the experience earned from a few quick battleground matches will be enough to unlock the Assault skill line and the Continuous Attack passive.
Once unlocked, the Continuous Attack passive grants you Major Gallop at all times, which provides a 30% boost to your mount speed.
It is highly recommended to acquire this passive skill as soon as possible, as it not only provides significant benefits for PvP, but also makes basic tasks such as questing and exploring less time-consuming when you can traverse the landscape at a incredible pace.
Additionally, you can increase both your mount’s speed and stamina through the use of Champion Points, once you’ve reached maximum level 50 and begin gaining CP levels. The Gifted Rider star found in the Craft Skill Tree increases your mount’s speed by 2% per stage for a total increase of 10% after investing 100 Champion points. And the Steed’s Blessing CP Star increases all movement speed by up to 20% while outside of combat. Finally, the War Mount star, also found in the Craft Skill Tree, removes all Stamina costs for your mount outside of combat for the pricey investment of 120 Champion Points, however having unlimited Stamina is incredible under the right circumstances.
