Your character name in The Elder Scrolls Online is a crucial element of immersing yourself in the game’s vast world. If you decide to change your character’s name at any point in your ESO journey this guide will be extremely helpful!

ESO Character Names
In The Elder Scrolls Online, creating a character name can be a challenge! The game’s rich cultural lore provides ample naming conventions for each of the playable races, or you can choose a humorous or unique name. However after some time passes your original choice of character name might not hit the same way or perhaps you learn something from reading one of the many lore books within the game that makes you want to rename your character. Don’t worry, this guide has you covered!
Account name vs Character name in ESO
First, we need to make a distinction between Account Name and Character Names in ESO.
Your account name is the publicly displayed name that will be visible in the game by friends and guild mates and is unique to your Elder Scrolls Online account. Depending on your platform of choice this is known as either your User ID (PC), gamertag (XBOX), or your PSN ID (PlayStation).
The character name is the name you choose for your in-game character, displayed in public chat channels and overhead to other players who are not your friends or guild mates. NPCs in certain dialogues will refer to you by this name as well in the text of dialogues and quests.
How do I change my character’s name in ESO?
To change your character’s name in the Elder Scrolls Online you will have to purchase a Name Change Token from the Crown Store. These tokens cost 2500 Crowns each. You will find these tokens under the Service Tokens subsection within the Upgrades category. After purchasing the Name Change Token, go back to the character selection screen at the main menu, select the character you wish to rename and select the Name Change Token icon as shown below.
