Fallout 4 Gunslinger Build Overview
The Gunslinger build in Fallout 4 is all about attack damage, critical damage, and optimizing for VATs. This build uses close to medium range weapons, and V.A.T.S to grant you huge damage multipliers. Plus like in previous games (Fallout games mainly) its just fun to roleplay as a Gunslinger outlaw, roaming the wasteland surviving one day at a time, filling that Critical Meter and delivering one big Critical Shot to blow away your enemies. The Gunslinger will want a high luck stat as well as high agility and to then boost perception via bobbleheads and gear.
Another added advantage of the VATS gunplay is, you can cripple limbs and disarm opponents. This gives you the outlaw theme feel and gameplay mechanics and is super helpful against death claws or OP enemies you cannot take out immediately. Simply cripple their leg, back up let your AP regen, and finish them off. Your strength is low ap costs and non automatic pistols specifically, aiming for more shots that also negate enemy’s damage resistances.
The major downside to the Gunslinger is the amount of perk points needed for combat. You may need to forgo perks like armorer or blacksmith in order to perform the best in combat without power armor. You can acquire these later in the game, but some players who enjoy crafting and settlement build might find it annoying early. That said, let’s dive into the build!

SPECIAL Distribution
The best stats for this build are outlined below:
| Stat | Points |
|---|---|
| Strength | 1 |
| Perception | 3 |
| Endurance | 1 |
| Charisma | 3 |
| Intelligence | 1 |
| Agility | 9 |
| Luck | 9 |
For the Gunslinger build, you want to stack a massive amount of Agility and Luck as your primary stats. These are used for Gun Fu and Four Leaf Clover perks. This means, you must forgo some crafting perks during the early game and hunt Bobbleheads to increase your stats permanently for decent damage and crit hits. You will focus on basic perks at the start, hunting bobbleheads and adding more utility and crafting as your stats overall increase.
When it comes to combat, optimizing for VATS shots is important since you shouldn’t be hip firing, but relaying on VATS and critical chance. Also, storing up criticals once you can start banking them and then unloading headshots on tough monsters in close range is extremely powerful on this build.
Look to increase your intelligence for the Gun Nut perk and better gun mods, and Strength if you want the Armorer perk. However, we suggest using costumes if possible because it forgoes the need to spend extra points on strength. Now let’s cover the perk progression for the Gunslinger build, level by level.

Gunslinger Build Best Perk Progression
Obviously this build relies on the Gunslinger Perk to increase your damage with pistols as your primary option. Other relevant and essential perks are listed below in the recommended order, but you can shift things around as needed.

| 50 | Lone Wanderer 4 (DLC) Gun Fu 3 | Fourth target and beyond auto crit |
Other perks you may consider include Mister Sandman up to the third rank for increased damage when using Silenced Weapons and Concentrated fire, though you likely will not have enough Perception to make use of this. Grim Reaper’s Sprint at the last rank is another great option which restores more AP after successful V.A.T.S kills. Consider Solar Powered if you want some passive health regeneration. Idiot Savant and Local Leader are more useful roleplay perks to consider which are a great idea for the late game.
How to Play Gunslinger Build
Early Game (Level 1–15)
At the start of the game, use other weapons which are easy to obtain such as a Pipe pistol, Pipe Revolver or a 10mm until you get Kellogg’s Pistol via the main quest. While doing the main quest, also go to the Railroad so you can get your stealth Deliverer Pistol. Stay at mid-range and always use VATS if you can. Hide around corners to regen your AP, then save up criticals for tough fights. Keep a few melee weapons available such as a combat knife to perserve ammo or to finish off enemies.
Check Diamond City early for ammo and mods. The Railroad HQ and Fort Hagen are the two locations for your weapons. Stick to using just one weapon type, Pistols, so you don’t spread out your perk points. When in doubt, keep multiple types of pistols on your person for different ammunition until you get scrounger. Meaning, 9mm, 10mm, .44 etc.
Mid Game (Level 16–35)
At this stage you should be able to do the main gameplay loop with the Kellogg’s Pistol. Aim in VATS, use critical hit, crits refill AP, stay in VATS indefinity and reload with Quick Hands. From here, you should optimize your weapon mods and look for costumes like the Silver Shroud so you don’t have to craft using armorer. You can always use combat armor and look for better drops.
Overall, the chain critical strategy in VATS is your best bet. From here, the end-game is all about optimizing for even more damage and burst.
Late Game (Level 35+)
At this stage, you want to fully upgrade both pistols. You can even move onto more advanced pistols beyond level 50 though that will requires Science perk and intelligence. Your AP regeneration should be infinite along with Mysterious Stranger random kills and Bloody Mess AOE kills. You might be squishy, in that case forgo some quality of life perks for Ricochet if you die frequently. Look out for legendary pistols including the Two Shot effect for double damage.

Weapons & Modding (Best-in-Slot + Budget)
The three best weapons for the Gunslinger build are Kellogg’s Pistol, Deliverer Pistol, and Pickman’s Blade. Kellogg’s Pistol has high burst damage and is a unique .44 revolver. The unique effect is it refills your action points on a critical hit. Since we are building for critical, you can cycle through endless rounds in VATS. With two perk points invested into Quick Hands, you can even reload in VATS without using AP, hopefully giving you shot, fill crit, use crit, refill AP gameplay loop. Kellogg’s pistol can be obtained as part of the main story quest though a base type .44 Magnum revolver also makes a great alternative choice.
Next, the Deliverer Pistol is also a unique weapon that works great on this build. It fires 10mm rounds in a single shot with the effect of improved VATS hit chance, and 25% less action point cost which is amazing. The Deliverer is great to use when stealth is necessary, or you want to upgrade your pistol beyond what the .44 Mag is capable of. However, it’s worth noting, that it can be annoying getting this weapon as you need to work with the Railroad faction and complete the Tradecraft quest first.
Lastly is Pickman’s Blade, which is helpful in melee or when ammo is low and you can finish off a target from stealth. The unique effect from this weapon is bleeding for damage, so even if you don’t get a kill, the enemies are likely to bleed out and die. A regular old combat knife is a good replacement and something you should bring just in case. Pickman’s blade is apart of a side quest, starting in Pickman’s Gallery in the North End District.

Armor & Costume

One of the best defensive progressions I’ve found for the Gunslinger playstyle is with Costumes and not armor. The reason being is, the Gunslinger won’t have the perk points needed to upgrade armor, especially early on. However, the Silver Shroud Costume and Hat grants damage reduction and also a bonus to Agility and Perception. This helps your build overall and is a great way to look cool, reduce damage, and increase stats. Moreover, the Silver Shroud Costume can be upgraded too, and at max quality offers a lot of damage reduction.
To obtain the Silver Shroud Costume, listen to the Silver Shroud Station on your Pip-Boy. This signal will lead you to Goodneighbor where you interaction with a ghoul name Kent Connolly. Complete the quest chain and then you can work on upgrades. Make sure to keep Kent alive if you want to upgrade armor, as he’s the NPC to help upgrade it. Also, if you get this gear early, the upgrades are level based, so expect them to come at levels 25, 35, and 45.
Lastly, you can equip patrolman glasses which add another +1 to Perception boosting your score even further with this combo.
Power Armor can be considered for late game as a better defensive or tank option, though with the downside of less mobility and constant need for fusion cores.
Chems and Aid
Jet: Jet slows down time, allowing you to manually line up headshots or quickly enter V.A.T.S. to take out multiple targets.
Nuka-Cola Quantum: Restores 400 AP + HP, “full AP bar refill” button, perfect for crit chaining.
Psycho: This chem increases your damage by 25% and your damage resistance by 25. The damage boost is excellent for taking down tough enemies or bosses, and the resistance boost is a lifesaver in a chaotic firefight.
Overdrive: increases both your damage and critical hit chance. For a Gunslinger build that relies on chaining criticals in V.A.T.S., this is a must-have.
Mentats (Berry): Highlights living targets, making it much easier to spot enemies, especially in dark areas or at a distance. This is great for a stealthy gunslinger who wants to get the jump on their opponents.
Buffout: While not as specialized as others, Buffout increases your Strength and Endurance, boosting your carry weight and health. It’s a solid, all-around chem for when you need a little more survivability.
Companion & Affinity Optimization

Dogmeat is the best option for a Gunslinger build because of the Lone Wanderer perk. With three ranks in the Lone Wanderer perk, you gain a massive stat boost: you’ll take 30% less damage, deal 25% more damage, and can carry 100 more pounds. Since Dogmeat doesn’t count as a companion for this perk, you get to keep all these bonuses while still having a companion by your side.
Beyond the perks, Dogmeat is also incredibly useful in combat. He’s great at distracting enemies, giving you a chance to set up perfect V.A.T.S. shots or sneak attacks. He also has a chance to scramble for and find useful items, like ammo and Stimpaks, during a fight.
You can find Dogmeat at the Red Rocket truck stop shortly after leaving Vault 111.
Fallout 4 Gunslinger Build FAQ
1. Is the Gunslinger build viable without DLC?
Yes. Both Kellogg’s Pistol (main story) and the Deliverer Pistol (Railroad questline) are base-game weapons. DLC expands your legendary pistol pool, but isn’t required.
2. Should I play Gunslinger on Survival Mode?
Absolutely. It’s ammo efficient, light on gear weight, and synergizes well with Lone Wanderer. Just remember you’re fragile early on, chems and Dogmeat can keep you alive.
3. What’s better for companions — Dogmeat or MacCready?
Dogmeat lets you keep Lone Wanderer’s huge bonuses. MacCready is the best alternative if you skip Lone Wanderer, because his Killshot perk massively boosts V.A.T.S. headshot accuracy.
4. Why pistols instead of rifles?
Pistols require fewer perk points, fire faster in V.A.T.S., and benefit from critical loops thanks to Kellogg’s Pistol and Deliverer. Rifles hit harder per shot, but pistols are unmatched for crit-spam.
5. What’s the single best legendary effect for pistols?
Lucky or Two-Shot pistols scale incredibly well with crits. Instigating is also top-tier for one-shotting enemies at full health.
6. How do I manage my low Endurance?
Stack chems (Med-X, Bufftats), use Silver Shroud upgrades, and rely on crit chains to kill enemies before they close the gap. Don’t facetank, fight smart.
7. How soon can I get my core weapons?
Deliverer is tied to early Railroad quests; Kellogg’s Pistol comes from the “Reunions” main quest. Both are obtainable around levels 10–15 if you push the story.
8. Can I still sneak with this build?
Yes, but it’s not the focus. Stealth is optional — the build is designed for open crit spam in V.A.T.S., not ninja gameplay.
9. Which chems are best for Critical Pistol build?
Overdrive (+25% crit damage) is your bread and butter. PsychoJet for bosses, Vegetable Soup for infinite AP sustain, and Nuka-Cola Quantum as an emergency refill.
10. Does armor matter for a crit build?
Absolutely. Silver Shroud costume is thematic and upgradeable. Long term, stack legendary armor effects like Unyielding and Bolstering to offset your low Endurance.
