Learn how to play our Luck build which uses the high Luck stat combined with automatic weapons to make Fallout 4 feel like a non-stop critical hit simulator for the entire game!

This isn’t your typical pistol Gunslinger, instead, this build uses automatic weapons, high Luck scaling, and V.A.T.S. crit loops to melt enemies in seconds. You’ll chain kills, refill Action Points instantly, and trigger back-to-back criticals like a walking slot machine. Plus, the weapons and armor are easy to obtain, making it powerful at the start of the game. Let us walk you through the Luck build, which we call the Lucky Commando!
This guide covers everything you need: weapons, perks, SPECIAL stats, gear, companions, and progression.
This build has been updated for Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition.
Fallout 4 Luck Build Overview

This Luck build focuses on high rate of fire weapons like machine guns that are “Automatic” rather than Pistols. With one specific weapon, Righteous Authority, you can double your critical damage and refill your critical meter 15% faster. Thus, we can turn this weapon into a crit machine, and that’s the overall premise of the build. This build doesn’t have the highest strength or the best charisma checks, but with a fast firing rate, using VATS you don’t need perfect aim, then you can spam those saved up criticals for massive burst damage!
You will also have more range than the standard Gunslinger build since machine guns are used. This gives you sustained burst damage, rather than needing to land every shot. Plus, the concept applies at every stage of the game, and can be even stronger at higher levels and survival difficulty once crafting options become possible.
| Luck Build Pros | Luck Build Cons |
|---|---|
| High Sustained Damage | Ammo starved early |
| Constant Crits | Heavy perk investments |
| Flexible Weapons | Less stealth-focused |

SPECIAL Distribution (Final & Leveling Path)
| Stat | Starting | Points to Acquire (Perks/BH) | Final (Lv 50) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strength | 1 | – | 1 |
| Perception | 4 | – | 4 |
| Endurance | 1 | – | 1 |
| Charisma | 3 | – | 3 |
| Intelligence | 5 | +1 (Bobblehead) | 6 |
| Agility | 5 | – | 5 |
| Luck | 9 | +1 “You’re SPECIAL!” Shaun’s Dresser | 10 |
Your most important stat is Luck and you should get it to 10 just after the tutorial. By using the “You’re SPECIAL!” book in Shaun’s room at the beginning of the game, you can hit Luck 10 on this build. This is vital because Luck in Fallout 4 isn’t just a stat; it’s a multiplier. At Luck 10, your crit meter fills significantly faster naturally. High Luck increases the chance of finding better loot and “Lucky” legendary weapon drops, which are the best-in-slot for this build, and also makes exploration extremely fun.
The next important SPECIAL stat is Intelligence on account of the important crafting options at the mid game. Starting at 5 and grabbing the Intelligence Bobblehead at the Boston Public Library gets you to 6. This unlocks Science! Rank 4 at level 41. With Science and Gun Nut maxed, you can modify rifles to fire automatic, not semi which engages the Commando Perk.
Perception is also important and starting at 4 is the “sweet spot.” It gives you access to Locksmith to help with picking locks immediately for early-game looting. While some builds push Perception to 10 for Concentrated Fire, our Luck Build doesn’t need it. Because Four Leaf Clover triggers on any hit. You don’t need a 99% headshot chance if you’re firing 10 rounds; you just need one or two to hit to reset your entire crit meter.
Next is Agility which most players assume you need high for V.A.T.S. and AP regen. Agility 5 gives you enough AP for 2–3 bursts. Because your Luck is 10, those 2–3 bursts have a near-guaranteed chance to trigger Grim Reaper’s Sprint, which kills can refill your AP automatically. You are effectively using your Luck stat to “buy” more Agility.
Summary of Bobblehead Targets
- “You’re SPECIAL!”: located under the dresser in Shaun’s room in your old Sanctuary Hills home, provides a free +1 bonus to any S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stat.
- Perception: Museum of Freedom (Concord). Get this within the first 30 minutes.
- Luck: Spectacle Island (Southeast corner). A tough swim, but it makes Ricochet a monster.
- Intelligence: Boston Public Library. Grab this around level 15–20 to unlock the next tier of Gun Nut/Science!.

Best Luck Build Perks Explained

Ricochet and Lone Wanderer: Since this build has 1 Endurance, you are a “Glass Cannon.” Ricochet turns your Luck into Armor. The higher your Luck, the higher the chance an enemy bullet simply bounces off you and kills them instead. Additionally, Lone Wanderer gives a flat damage reduction giving you two ways for mitigating or avoiding damage entirely.
Four Leaf Clover: In a standard build, you fill your Critical Meter based on your Luck stat. With Four Leaf Clover, every single hit in V.A.T.S. has a chance to fill the meter instantly. A pistol fires once. An automatic rifle fires a burst of 3–5 rounds in one V.A.T.S. command. That is 5 chances to proc a full crit meter in a single second.
Critical Banker & Better Criticals: Critical Banker allows you to store those “lucky” procs. Better Criticals ensures that when you spend them, the fight ends. You fire a burst, Four Leaf Clover fills your meter, You “Bank” it, you use it on a headshot for 2.5x damage.
Grim Reaper’s Sprint: At max rank, a kill gives you a 35% chance to refill your entire AP bar and your Critical meter. This effectively bypasses your Agility stat. You don’t need a high “Maximum AP” if your “Current AP” is constantly being reset to 100% by the Reaper.
Commando: At Rank 4 and 5, Commando grants a significant chance to stagger enemies. Because an automatic weapon fires so rapidly, you aren’t just dealing damage; you are physically preventing the enemy from moving or shooting back.
Gun Nut: Automatic receivers usually reduce your damage per bullet compared to semi-auto. Gun Nut allows you to craft Powerful or Hardened Piercing Auto Receivers, which negate that penalty. It also lets you craft Recoil Compensating Stocks, which are mandatory for keeping your crosshairs on target during a 30-round spray.
Science!: It allows you to mod the Kiloton Radium Rifle or Plasma Rifles. More importantly, it lets you craft Reflex Sights, which lower the AP cost in V.A.T.S.
How to Play Luck Build (Early/Mid/Late Game)

Early Game (Level 1–15)
When you first start off, you should focus on survivability and perk acquisition. You will need a few perks to make VATS critical chains happen, so expect a slower start. Play like a standard shooter who uses V.A.T.S. to “clean up” rather than to dominate.
Start fights in real-time or stealth. Since your AP is low, don’t waste it on high-health enemies yet. Use V.A.T.S. specifically to secure kills on low-health “trash” mobs to attempt to trigger Grim Reaper’s Sprint. Save your one banked critical for the toughest enemy in the pack (e.g., a legendary raider).
Get the Perception Bobblehead immediately to hit PER 5 and unlock Locksmith. Use the “You’re SPECIAL!” book on Luck to hit 10 right away. Meet the trader Cricket. She wanders here or outside Diamond City. Save every cap to buy Spray n’ Pray (Explosive Submachine Gun). This is the best early-game automatic weapon.
Mid Game (Level 16–35)
At this stage, your Luck stat and perks start to show up in combat, keeping you chaining infinite criticals and refilling your AP. You now have Four Leaf Clover and Grim Reaper’s Sprint at Rank 2. You should stay in V.A.T.S. for 80% of combat.
Because you fire in bursts, every burst has a ~25% chance to refill your entire crit meter. You stop aiming for headshots and start aiming for the Torso, the goal is to hit as many times as possible to trigger procs, not just to deal damage. Fill up your critical bank and save them for tougher fights and unlocked for max damage.
As you start crafting, look to build Reflex Sights and Quick Eject Magazines. These mods drastically reduce the AP cost of every shot in V.A.T.S. Even with your modest Agility, a modded Combat Rifle can fire 10+ times in one bar.
Head to Spectacle Island. It’s a dangerous swim, but getting Luck to 11 (natural) pushes your RNG chances over a hidden threshold.
Late Game (Level 35+)
By now, the game’s RNG is effectively rigged in your favor. With Ricochet perk rank 3 and Lone Wanderer 30% damage reduction, you can literally stand in the middle of a room and watch enemies kill themselves trying to hit you.
You should be able to chain criticals, storing a bunch for boss fights, and annihilating enemies at will.
Weapons & Modding (Best-in-Slot + Budget)
The best overall weapons for a Fallout 4 Luck build are the following:
- Kiloton Radium Rifle (End-Game) – Best because this weapon relies on explosive “splash” to trigger Four Leaf Clover, you want a high fire rate and the lowest possible AP cost.
- Righteous Authority (Mid-Game) – With Luck 10, Four Leaf Clover, and the Lucky prefix, your crit meter will often refill in just 2 or 3 hits.
- Spray n’ Pray (Early Game) – great because every bullet explodes, you often hit multiple limbs or multiple enemies at once. Each of those “hits” counts as a chance to trigger Four Leaf Clover.
Primary – The Kiloton Radium Rifle

This weapon deals Ballistic, Radiation, and Explosive damage simultaneously.. This is your most complex weapon to mod, requiring both Gun Nut 4 and Science! 4 for the best results. Below are recommended Mods:
- Receiver: Powerful Automatic Receiver (Maximized Ballistic, Radiation, and Explosive scaling)
- Barrel: Long Finning Barrel (Best balance of range and recoil reduction)
- Stock: Recoil Compensating Stock (Maximum stability for automatic fire)
- Magazine: Quick Eject Mag (Best for staying in the fight during long V.A.T.S. queues)
- Sights: Reflex Sight (Dot) (Lowest AP cost for the Radium Rifle chassis)
- Muzzle: Suppressor (The Radium Rifle has a unique sound profile; the Suppressor makes this a top-tier stealth-commando tool)
Can be bought from Brother Kane in the Nucleus after joining the Children of Atom (Far Harbor DLC).
Secondary – Righteous Authority

You must convert this from a rifle to an Automatic Laser Pistol/Rifle to benefit from your Commando and Luck perks.
- Capacitor: Boosted Photon Agitator
- Receiver: Automatic Barrel (Turns the weapon into a Commando-class firearm)
- Stock: Recoil Compensating Stock
- Lens: Fine-Tuned Beam Coaxer (Increases Critical Hit damage even further)
- Magazine: (Lasers use standard cells, but ensure you have the Overcharged or Max Capacity capacitor if available)
- Sights: Reflex Sight (Reduces AP cost and provides a clean sight picture)
- Muzzle: Beam Splitter (This turns one shot into a “shotgun” burst of beams, each beam hit has a chance to trigger Four Leaf Clover)
Reward from Paladin Danse after the first Brotherhood of Steel quest, “Call to Arms.”
Early Game – Spray n’ Pray

Since this weapon relies on explosive “splash” to trigger Four Leaf Clover, you want a high fire rate and the lowest possible AP cost. Below are recommended mods:
- Receiver: Powerful Automatic Receiver (Highest damage for the Commando perk)
- Barrel: Short Light Barrel (Reduces AP cost significantly in V.A.T.S.)
- Stock: Recoil Compensating Stock (Essential to keep the “Pray” part of the name from being literal)
- Magazine: Quick Eject Drum Mag (Massive capacity with faster reloads)
- Sights: Reflex Sight (Dot) (Crucial for reducing V.A.T.S. cost; never use a scope on this)
- Muzzle: Suppressor (Synergizes with Mister Sandman if you take it later; otherwise, use a Compensator)
Bought from the wandering trader Cricket (found outside Diamond City or Vault 81).
Armor, Power Armor & Legendaries

| Armor Slot | Best Mod (Material/Misc) | Why it’s Essential for this Build |
| Helmet | Commando Helmet (Unique) | Sold by the Brotherhood of Steel. It comes with a built-in 10% VATS AP reduction, which stacks with your perks. |
| Chest Piece | Polymer / Ultra-Light | Polymer is the max defense, Ultra-Light better AP. |
| Left Arm | Polymer / Ultra-Light | Ultra-Light adds +5 to your Total AP. More AP means more shots, which means more chances to trigger Four Leaf Clover. |
| Right Arm | Polymer / Ultra-Light | Another +5 AP. |
| Left Leg | Polymer / Ultra-Light | Another +5 AP. |
| Right Leg | Polymer / Ultra-Light | The final +5 AP. With both legs/arms modded, you are looking at a massive +20 bonus AP. |
Combat Armor is the best armor for this Luck build because it provides a perfect 50/50 split between Physical and Energy resistance. This is vital because high-level enemies (like Assaultrons or Enclave remnants in 2026’s Anniversary content) will shred a Luck build that only focuses on one damage type.
Chems, Aid, and Economy

| Chem | Effect | Usage |
| Overdrive | +25% Damage, +25% Crit Chance | This is your most important chem. It allows you to score critical hits outside of V.A.T.S. With an automatic weapon, you’ll be proccing crits constantly in real-time. |
| Psycho Jet | +25% Damage, Slows Time | Use this when you are out of AP and being swarmed. It allows you to manually line up headshots to bridge the gap until your AP regens. |
| Jet Fuel | +35 Max AP, Faster AP Regen | This specifically fixes the “Commando problem” of high AP costs. It makes your bar refill noticeably faster between V.A.T.S. volleys. |
| Berry Mentats | Highlights Living Targets | Since you have 1 Endurance, getting ambushed is a death sentence. This lets you see enemies through walls so you can queue them in V.A.T.S. first. |
Since your build relies on Grim Reaper’s Sprint (a chance-based refill), you need a manual “Emergency Refill” for when your luck runs dry. Below is what you should carry on you to consume:
- Nuka-Cola Quantum: This is your “Full Heal” for AP. It instantly restores 400 AP. If you drop out of V.A.T.S. and the enemy is still standing, pop a Quantum to immediately go back into a full queue.
- Mirelurk Omelette: One of the best foods in the game for this build. It’s lightweight and provides +50 AP instantly. It only requires one Mirelurk Egg and Dirty Water, keep a stack of 20 on you at all times.
- Vegetable Soup: Grants +25 Rad Resistance but, more importantly, a 5.0 AP regeneration bonus. It’s cheap to craft (Carrot, Tato, Dirty Water) and helps sustain your bursts.
- Refreshing Beverage: It removes all rads, heals you rapidly, and cures all drug addictions. Since you’ll be popping Overdrive and Jet like candy, this saves you from needing to find a doctor.
Companion & Affinity Optimization

Dogmeat is the best companion for the Luck Build because of his unique interaction with the Lone Wanderer perk. While other companions disable this perk’s bonuses, Dogmeat does not. For a build with 1 Endurance, the stat boosts provided by three ranks of Lone Wanderer are mandatory:
- 30% Damage Reduction: This effectively replaces your missing HP bar, allowing you to survive long enough for Ricochet to trigger.
- 25% Damage Increase: This stacks multiplicatively with the Commando and Bloody Mess perks, turning your automatic fire into high damage.
- +100 Carry Weight: You need to carry thousands of rounds of .45 and Fusion Cells, this bonus ensures you don’t have to leave loot behind to stay mobile.
You can find Dogmeat at the Red Rocket Truck Stop, located just southeast of Sanctuary shortly after leaving Vault 111.
Fallout 4 Luck Build FAQ
1. Why does this build use Agility 5 instead of a higher investment?
Because Luck 10 effectively replaces the need for high Agility. Agility increases your maximum Action Points and AP regeneration speed, which are both useful for VATS builds. However, with Grim Reaper’s Sprint active, kills in VATS have a 35% chance at max rank to fully refill your AP bar automatically. Four Leaf Clover further reduces how often you run dry by filling your crit meter mid-burst. You are using Luck to buy back the Agility you did not invest in, which frees up those SPECIAL points for Intelligence and Perception instead.
2. How does Four Leaf Clover interact with automatic weapons specifically?
This is the core reason automatic weapons are stronger than pistols for this build. Four Leaf Clover triggers a chance to fill your critical meter on every individual hit in VATS, not once per VATS command. A single VATS burst with an automatic weapon fires three to five rounds. That means three to five separate chances to fully refill your crit meter in the time it takes to fire one command.
3. Can you play this build without the Far Harbor or Nuka-World DLC?
Yes. The Kiloton Radium Rifle requires Far Harbor, and the Disciples Blade mentioned in the melee section requires Nuka-World, but neither is essential to the build. Righteous Authority is your mid-game primary weapon and requires no DLC at all. It is a quest reward from Paladin Danse after completing Call to Arms for the Brotherhood of Steel. Spray n’ Pray covers the early game and is available from the wandering trader Cricket near Diamond City.
4. Does Dogmeat break the Lone Wanderer perk?
No. Dogmeat is the only companion in Fallout 4 who does not disable Lone Wanderer’s bonuses. This is an intentional game mechanic.
5. Best way to get ammo in Fallout 4?
Ammo management is the main trade-off of running automatic weapons. The Scrounger perk at Rank 1 is flagged as a flex pick at Level 38 and is specifically recommended to address this. Beyond that, keep caps reserves for vendor restocking and prioritize looting every container you pass. The Luck stat itself passively increases the amount of ammo you find in containers across the Commonwealth, which compounds over time.
