Fallout 4 Melee Build Overview

The melee build focuses on using melee weapons (not fist/unarmed) for increased damage output, along with perks to reduce your incoming damage. Melee builds are notorious for having more damage in close range, high mobility, and are a fun and unique way to play Fallout 4. This melee build revolves around using the Big Leagues, Rooted, and Lone Wanderer perks to have remarkable damage reduction while fighting in close quarters.
The main benefit of playing a melee build is that no ammo is needed. This forgoes the need for additional perk points, weapons, and crafting to increase damage and allows you to use a few simple weapons without making tons of crafting investments. Additionally, you will gain high damage reduction, and while it seems counterintuitive, playing in melee range with this style makes you feel like a tank.

However, you will still need to manage your AP so you can strike carefully in range. You will also be vulnerable to range attacks and anything that is flying. Thus, picking your targets carefully is critical. Also, you can expect a slow start with this playstyle as it takes some perks to get the full effects of the build going. Once you do, however, it is an awesome build for Fallout 4 that can be put together with minimal money required. Below we walk you through how to setup your own ultimate Melee build.

SPECIAL Distribution (Final & Leveling Path)
| Stat | Starting Points (Lvl 1) | Points to Acquire (Perks/BH) | Final at Lvl 50 |
| Strength | 10 | 0 | 10 |
| Perception | 1 | 0 | 1 |
| Endurance | 10 | 0 | 10 |
| Charisma | 3 | 0 | 3 |
| Intelligence | 2 | 3 (Perks) | 5 |
| Agility | 1 | 0 | 1 |
| Luck | 1 | 2 (Perks/BH) | 3 |
There are two effective ways to play the melee build in Fallout 4, one with high Endurance (tank) another high agility (DPS). For this build, we recommend Endurance and the damage reduction route. That’s because you aren’t solely reliant on VATS and BLITZ perk specifically to be functional in combat. If you run out of AP, you won’t be nearly as damage production.
Therefore, we recommend increasing Strength to 10 and Endurance to 10. This allows you to reach powerful perks with huge damage reduction making the melee build much easier at first which is one of it’s biggest flaws. Plus you’ll have plenty of carrying capacity and room to upgrade other stuff with your SPECIAL Book (luck or intelligence recommended).
Having high strength gives you access to big leagues and rooted, your two damage and damage resistance perks. 10 Endurance gives you access to Solar Powered, giving you more strength and endurance during the day. Since you can rest and keep the bonus up 100% of the time, it gives you a huge advantage starting and throughout the entire game of Fallout 4. Consider bobbleheads a priority and post level 50 to obtain more Agility points and acquire Blitz.
This progression rapidly unlocks the core damage mechanics (Big Leagues, Rooted, and Solar Powered) and then increases damage and crafting perks.
While this is initially a low intelligence or idiot savant style build, you can still pick up Intelligence bobbleheads when it makes sense in addition to your strength perks. Since Intelligence starts low, your XP gain will also start slow unless Idiot Savant procs. This is normal for a melee build and evens out later once you pick up Intelligence bobbleheads or add more points for crafting perks.

This progression rapidly unlocks the core damage mechanics (Big Leagues, Rooted, and Solar Powered) and then incerases damage and crafting perks.

Important Perks Explained
- Big Leagues (5): this is your baseline damage increase with melee weapons. This only accounts for melee and not unarmed so make sure you’re using swords, knives, etc.
- Solar Powered: your passive power to strength and endurance during daylight. Make sure to always rest in a bed before heading out and that it works from 6 AM to 6 PM. You can also self-heal during the day and remove radiation perfect for survivor mode.
- Lone Wanderer: requires you only use Dogmeat companion but in exchange gain huge damage reduction and damage increase. Mostly companions get in your way anyways on a melee build so this is a no-brainer for the highest damage reduction possible.
- Rooted (3): Massive defense and damage when stationary. Your goal becomes to run up to an enemy or use VATS and stay stationary once you engage to take advantage of this massive bonus.
- Blacksmith (3) & Armorer (4): Max weapon/armor modding. You will need both and eventually Science if you want to use Power Armor.
- Toughness, Adamantium Skeleton, Life Giver: these three perks just help with overall survival. You will have a massive amount of HP and damage reduction without using any armor, so think of this as just another bonus!
How to Play Melee Build (Early/Mid/Late Game)
Early Game (Level 1–15)
During the early game, your goal is to get a Sledgehammer or Grognak’s Axe. You can find this Axe in Hubris Comics behind an Advanced Locked display case or a nearby advanced locked terminal. It’s considered a two-handed melee weapon but cost low AP to use in VATS and it cannot be upgraded at a workbench. Thus, you need zero perks or crafting to start using it strength away.
Your goal is to unlock damage reduction perks and get Dogmeat without swapping. Always rest and play from 6 AM to 6 PM to take advantage of Solar Powered perk. Stop when you are being attacked if you cannot get away so Rooted kicks in. Also, always bring a random pipe pistol, rifle, or even a combat shotgun so you can shoot targets when you cannot close the distance.
Look to hug walls as you close the distance and stay out of wide open spaces so you won’t be taking needless damage.
Make a quick trip to Diamond City once you gather enough Caps. You can rest safely there to reset your daylight cycle for Solar Powered, and the vendors sometimes carry solid early-game melee weapons.
Mid Game (Level 16–35)
At the mid game levels you want to increase your Luck to get Bloody Mess. Not only does it give a flat damage increase, but it also can explode enemies, causing an AOE effect to random kills. You can also work towards increasing your Intelligence so you can access Science and get the best mods for Super Sledge accessed at end game.
You can also expect tougher encounters around this point, especially when you start running into super mutants that love to sit behind cover and blast you from range. This makes it even more important to keep walls between you and incoming fire as you sprint into melee range.
Late Game (Level 35+)
Your goal at end-game is to max out your crafting, damage reduction, and damage increase perks. You can use VATS to attack enemies, but the Super Sledge is a great choice for an end game weapon. Gameplay will remain the same, but look to farm bosses to get legendary drops with Instigating perk so you double damage at full health. This will help one shot enemies even with a melee build!
If you enjoy a more aggressive style in Power Armor, Pain Train adds a fun layer by letting you slam into enemies as you close distance, giving you a free stagger before your melee combo lands.
Weapons & Modding
The best overall weapons for a Fallout 4 Melee build are the following:
- Super Sledge: huge damage, but swings slow and requires tons of AP in VATS. You want Instigating legendary prefix which doubles damage at full health. This will help you tremendously to one-shot targets without having to swing many times.
- Grognak’s Axe: great low level weapon for two handed users who want big damage. You cannot mod or get a specific kind of Axe, so go with the base weapon.
- Revolutionary Sword: medium swing speed good damage found at mid-game levels.
Primary Melee Weapon – Super Sledge / Grognak’s Axe
The Super Sledge makes a great choice as your primary weapon due to its raw damage. You can add the Stun Pack to the head of the weapon helping stun enemies when hit. The Sledgehammer is another option as your primary weapon. You can purchase a Super Sledge from KL-E-0 in Goodneighbor.

The second option to use most of the early game is Grognak’s Axe. This two-handed weapon deals big damage with a medium swing speed and is easy to pick up early in the game from Hubris Comics. Stick with this weapon and upgrade after you have some Caps.
Secondary Weapon – Revolutionary Sword

Another good weapon to use as a secondary is the Revolutionary Sword. It can be modded to stun or deal bleed damage. This is helpful if you want to do a quick single-target strike and bleed out the target before swapping to the Super Sledge for a huge blow.
Other – Pickman’s Blade, Deathclaw gauntlet
Other weapons to consider include Atom’s Judgement, Kremvh’s Tooth, the Deathclaw Gauntlet, and Pickman’s Blade from Pickman’s Gallery.
Best Armor & Legendaries

When it comes to armor, look to acquire Grognak’s Costume from Hubris Comics as well. It might look silly but it gives you +2 Strength and 25% damage modifier to melee weapons. It comes with some damage reduction and it allows you to wear other armor pieces beyond just the costume. Therefore, you can still craft and upgrade your armor and retain the massive damage bonus to melee weapons. For other pieces of armor, look to upgrade combat armor with the Weighted trait so your melee attacks can ignore armor.
Best Power Armor
This build is effective with power armor (PA) so feel free to use it. It won’t be until the mid or later levels where you have enough intelligence and perks like Science to upgrade your power armor. When you do, look to grab these perks below and stick with the T-60 or more advanced models:
| Slot | Mod |
| Helmet | Sensing Array (+2 PER – negligible) |
| Chest | Jet Pack (Massive mobility boost) |
| Arms | Optimized Bracers (Less AP for Power Attacks) |
| Legs | Calibrated Shocks (+50 Carry Weight per leg – vital for Survival and carry capacity. |
Chems, Aid, and Economy

The ultimate chem for a melee build is PsychoJet. It provides the unique ability to slow down time (activating the Jet effect), and it significantly boosts your damage and damage resistance (activating the Psycho effect). This potent mix lasts for 15 seconds. Additionally, you gain extra Action Points (AP), which is crucial for maximizing the number of power attacks or hits you can execute in VATS. Players often overlook chems, but they are absolutely essential for a melee build, offering a necessary edge in damage output, damage reduction, and overall utility in tough fights, so don’t skip them.
Chems provide a massive bonus to damage and survivability with a melee build. Below are our recommendations:
- Jet: Jet slows down time, allowing you to manually line up headshots or quickly enter V.A.T.S. to take out multiple targets.
- Nuka-Cola Quantum: Restores 400 AP + HP, “full AP bar refill” button, perfect for crit chaining.
- Psycho: This chem increases your damage by 25% and your damage resistance by 25. The damage boost is excellent for taking down tough enemies or bosses, and the resistance boost is a lifesaver in a chaotic firefight.
- Overdrive: increases both your damage and critical hit chance. For a Gunslinger build that relies on chaining criticals in V.A.T.S., this is a must-have.
- Mentats (Berry): Highlights living targets, making it much easier to spot enemies, especially in dark areas or at a distance. This is great for a stealthy gunslinger who wants to get the jump on their opponents.
- Buffout: While not as specialized as others, Buffout increases your Strength and Endurance, boosting your carry weight and health. It’s a solid, all-around chem for when you need a little more survivability.
Companion & Affinity Optimization

The best option for a companion with a melee build is Dogmeat using the Lone Wanderer perk. This gives you damage reduction and damage increase without worrying about someone getting in the way. You will need 3 Charisma to make this happen, but the pros outweight the cons.
However, if you love bringing a companion for the story elements, consider Preston Garvey. He has the United We Stand perk which gives a damage reduction and damage bonus surrounded by enemies in melee range. This won’t outweight the Lone Wanderer perk, but it makes a good secondary option if you like companions.
Fallout 4 Melee Build FAQ
1. Does the Rooted perk stack with the Blitz perk?
Yes, Blitz (teleporting in VATS) counts as a stationary attack. Therefore, when you use Blitz, you receive the damage bonus and Damage Resistance (DR) bonus from Rooted (if you have the perk), multiplying your damage significantly.
2. How do I get the maximum damage multiplier on a melee hit?
Stack as many damage multiplying perks as possible and chems, listed below:
- Big Leagues (5): Doubles the base damage of the weapon.
- Ninja (3): Provides a massive 10x damage multiplier for Melee Sneak Attacks.
- Rooted (3): Adds +50% damage and +50 DR/ER when standing still (which includes the moment you execute a Blitz attack).
- Consumables: Chems (Psycho, Bufftats, Fury) and food (Yao Guai Meat) provide large, temporary stacking strength and damage bonuses.
3. What is the best melee weapon in the game?
Instigating Super Sledge for non-stealth builds, for Stealth Instigating Disciples Blade (from Nuka-World), or an Instigating (double damage on full-health targets) is the best prefix for one-shot assassination via Blitz.
4. What clothing should I wear if I am not using Power Armor?
Use both under-armor and armor pieces. You can use Military Fatigues or Ballistic Weave Armored Suit (requires the Railroad questline). Ballistic Weave is essential as it provides massive DR and ER that you can stack with external armor pieces.
For armor pieces, use Heavy Combat Armor pieces with the Sentinel’s trait (15% less damage when standing still) and Cavalier’s (15% less damage while sprinting) legendary effects to minimize damage during the charge and while swinging.
5. Is the Melee Build viable in Survival Mode?
Yes, it is often considered one of the easiest ways to play Survival Mode in the late game. While the start is tough, you unlock high-end perks that make you very hard to kill.
6. What companion should I use?
Either use Dogmeat with the Lone Wanderer perk for max damage and damage reduction or Preston Garvey for similar bonuses.
