Categories: Fallout 4, Fallout 4 Builds
This build focuses on the most broken melee mechanic in Fallout 4: using Blitz to teleport across the battlefield and Iron Fist to paralyze enemies with your bare hands (or knuckles). In this guide, we walk you through how to create the ultimate Unarmed Build in Fallout 4.

This build has been updated for Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition.

Fallout 4 Unarmed Build Overview
The two core perks in the Unarmed build are Blitz and Iron Fist. Iron Fist increases your damage with “punching” attacks. This is different from a melee build (hammers, axes, knives, etc), so be aware you can only use fist or specific weapons like Knuckles, Deathclaw gauntlets, and Power Fist to name a few. At five perk levels, you can disarm, paralyze, and double critical damage in VATS, giving you incredible damage and crowd control.
The build really shines, however, when you combine Iron Fist with Blitz from Agility. Blitz makes you leap towards an enemy when you attack from VATS, and the distance is substantial. Blitz isn’t considered movement; more or less, you teleport to the target. Therefore, the Rooted perk stays active: reducing damage while you stand still (which the game thinks you are doing). At three levels in Rooted, you disarm enemies that use melee weapons.
Thus, this is the combo. Close the distance enough to enter into a Blitz attack, and boom, massive damage and damage reduction all at once. Your main concern is a slow start and open spaces. You will also need a lot of AP and consumables to regen Action Points to constantly enter VATS for the Blitz cheese. However, if you do, this is the most devastating close-quarters build in all of Fallout 4.

SPECIAL Distribution (Final & Leveling Path)
| Stat | Starting | Points to Acquire (Perks/BH) | Final (Lv 50) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strength | 9 | 1 | 10 |
| Perception | 1 | 0 | 0 |
| Endurance | 3 | 0 | 0 |
| Charisma | 1 | 0 | 0 |
| Intelligence | 1 | 0 | 3 |
| Agility | 9 | 1 | 10 |
| Luck | 3 | 3 | 6 |
Your unarmed damage scales in effectiveness from the Strength stat. By max level, you want 10 for optimal damage and access to every perk. Agility is critical to reach 9 at character creation so you can get Blitz immediately. Luck can be increased to 6 for critical perks. However, this is where you could take different perks for utility like Charisma for Lone Wanderer or settlement building. Consider the core SPECIAL 9 Strength and Agility at the start, with Bobbleheads giving a +1 permanent spread throughout the wasteland.

Unarmed Build Perks Explained
Blitz: This perk significantly increases the distance from which you can initiate a melee attack in VATS. This is the “engine” of the build. It allows you to close the distance instantly without being detected, effectively turning a melee build into a ranged build that uses fists instead of bullets.
Moving Target: It grants you Damage and Energy Resistance while you are sprinting, and eventually reduces the AP cost of sprinting. Speed is everything in an Unarmed build to close the distance and activate VATS. This helps you quickly enter the target range while lowering AP Cost.
Better Criticals: This increases the extra damage dealt by your Critical Hits (up to 2.5x extra damage). Since you are using an Unarmed VATS build, you will be generating Critical Hits constantly. This perk ensures that even “tanky” enemies like Sentry Bots or Deathclaws are one-shot by a single punch.
Iron Fist: It increases your unarmed damage by 20% per rank and adds utility like disarming, crippling, or paralyzing enemies. This is your base damage scaler. More importantly, Rank 5 allows your Critical Hits to Paralyze targets, which is your ultimate safety net against bosses who survive the initial hit.
Life Giver: It increases your maximum Health per rank and adds passive health regeneration at Rank 3. Unarmed builds have low Endurance because of the damage reduction with Blitz. Life Giver provides a flat HP buffer that prevents you from being “one-shotted” by a stray grenade or a landmine you didn’t see.
Armorer: This allows you to craft and install advanced modifications to your armor pieces. It helps with modding armor for stealth and survival and is needed to make your clothing as strong as power armor.
Blacksmith: This grants access to higher-tier mods for melee and unarmed weapons. Unarmed weapons (like the Power Fist) have very few mods, but the ones they do have are massive upgrades that add energy damage or armor penetration.
Action Boy: This causes your Action Points (AP) to regenerate much faster. The Unarmed build lives and dies by your AP bar. If you run out of AP, you can’t Blitz, which means you are just a squishy human standing in front of a gun.
How to Play Unarmed Build (Early/Mid/Late Game)
Early Game (Level 1–15)
At the early stage of Fallout 4, you won’t have a ton of perks to make the Blitz Unarmed attack work. Even if you do, you’ll run out of AP quickly. Therefore, bring random weapons and use it range until you get a few perks going. From there, you want to hug walls, close distance, do the Blitz VATS attack. Immediately look at your AP if you need to retreat and use a 10mm gun to finish it off. Remember, open spaces are your biggest threat early until you have a few important perks.
Important Areas to Cover:
- Sanctuary & Red Rocket: Fully scrap these for materials to build basic armor mods.
- Hubris Comics: Home to Grognak’s Axe and the Grognak Costume. While the axe is melee (don’t use), the costume provides a flat +2 Strength and a bonus to unarmed/melee damage.
Mid Game (Level 16–35)
At this level, you should have the combo ready to go. Once you have Ninja unlocked, you can stealth into a room, target multiple enemies in VATS and one-shot them before they knew you were there. Once you have Moving Target, you should now constantly sprint in the open to help with damage reduction as you close the distance.
Your next priority is crafting, specifically mods and getting a Power Fist weapon with Puncturing or heating coils. Use Ballistic Weave if you’ve completed the Railroad quest as well.
Late Game (Level 35+)
The final levels give you a massive boost to damage but also crowd control with rank five Iron Fist granting Paralyzes. You can also do more damage with criticals and even store criticals. Sprint or stealth depending on the situation, enter VATS, one-shot everything.
Legendary Affix Priority:
- VATS Enhanced (Armor): Reduces AP cost by 10% per piece. Stacking this is the only way to chain massive Blitz attacks.
- Powered (Armor): Increases AP refresh speed so you can go back into VATS immediately after a kill.
- Instigating (Weapon): Deals double damage if the target is at full health. If you find an Instigating Knuckles/Gauntlet, it becomes your primary “one-tap” tool for even the hardest enemies.
Weapons & Modding (Best-in-Slot + Budget)
The best overall weapons for a Fallout 4 Unarmed build are the following:
- Knuckles (beginner)
- Power Fist (intermediate)
- Deathclaw Gauntlet (Best in Slot)
Deathclaw Gauntlet

The best weapon (considered unarmed) for this build is the Deathclaw Gauntlet which you can get from the Devil’s Due quest. This quest is found at the Museum of Witchcraft, where a egg nest near the mother Deathclaw spawns a gauntlet. You want to find a legendary Instigating version if possible from killing legendary enemies, but the base model is just find.
The one mod for this weapon is Extra Claw which gives a chance to disarm enemy and better damage. You can also start purchasing these around level 20.
Power Fist

The Power Fist is obtained by killing Swan in the Behemoth living in the pond at Boston Commons. This will drop a unique version with Furious legendary trait. Damage increased by 15% after each consecutive hit on the same target. While the best trait is Instigating for one shot damage, this is a close second and super helpful weapon to obtain. Get the Puncturing mod to penetrate armor on high survivability enemies like Super Mutants and Brotherhood Knights.
Armor, Power Armor & Legendaries

The best overall weapons for a Fallout 4 Unarmed build are the following:
- Leather Armor (beginner): obtained from Raider drops around Concord and Lexington. You want to mod Shadowed for stealth with padded in chest to help one-shots.
- Ballistic Weave and Combat Armor (advanced): complete Railroad quest with Tinker Tom to unlock Ballistic Weave then obtain Combat Armor from Gunner’s around Hubris Comics. Upgrade for Shadowed and Ultra-Light to help with VATS and AP.
- Military Fatigues with Ballistic Weave and Sentinel Armor (End-game): Buy fatigues from Proctor on Prydwen for a +2 Agility bonus and upgrade the material for extra damage reduction. Look for Sentinel’s legendary priority which grants 15% less damage while standing still and stacks with Blitz and Rooted. A full set of this armor can get you to 90% damage while you are punching!
Companion & Affinity Optimization

The best companion for the Unarmed build is Cait who has the Trigger Rush bonus: your Action Points (AP) regenerate 25% faster when your health drops below 25%. If you do get dropped to lower HP, you will immediately regen AP so you can either sprint away or enter VATS for a massive damage reduction bonus with Blitz.
An alternative is Dogmeat with three levels into Lone Wanderer Perk. This will grant you more damage reduction and increased damage, but you need Charisma at level 3 and three perk points.
Fallout 4 Unarmed Build FAQ
1. What counts as an Unarmed weapon?
Unlike “Melee” weapons (swords, bats, knives), Unarmed weapons are specifically things you wear on your hand. These include:
- Bare Fists (no weapon)
- Knuckles
- Boxing Gloves
- Power Fist
- Deathclaw Gauntlet
- Meat Hook (Far Harbor DLC)
2. Can I use Unarmed weapons in Power Armor?
No. You cannot equip Unarmed weapons like the Power Fist or Deathclaw Gauntlet while inside Power Armor. Entering the suit will automatically unequip them. However, you can upgrade the Power Armor Arms themselves with mods like Hydraulic Bracers to increase your “bare-handed” damage while in the suit.
3. Does Blitz actually work with Unarmed?
Yes. Even though the perk description says “melee distance,” it applies fully to Unarmed attacks. It is considered the most essential perk for any unarmed build to close the gap before being detected.
4. Does Rooted work with Blitz?
Yes. Even though you are “teleporting” to the enemy, the game considers you “stationary” during the actual VATS attack animation. This means you gain the full Damage and Resistance bonuses from the Rooted perk for every strike.
