This guide covers the best abilities, gear, and stat growth to make the most of the Chemist job (class) in Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles!

In Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles, players start out as either a Squire or a Chemist Job which is their class. Your job has abilities that unlock with Job Points (JP) and you also gain Experience (EXP). As you increase in power, you want to prioritize the right abilities and the right job. Moreover, having a clear path of progression is critical, because not all jobs give the same stats. Each job has a hidden stat growth and progression, so spending four to five levels on a non-optimal class can set your build back in power.

Chemist Job Overview

The FFT Chemist Build is one of two starting jobs (classes) in Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster. The Chemist path is typically used for spellcasting in the early game, but the job has advantages due to its powerful abilities that any class or role can take advantage of. While its stats are modest compared to other jobs, the Chemist shines by granting access to Item usage, instantly making for a solid early game healer unit, including buffs, and status cures that cost no MP and take no charge time.
Unlike spellcasters such as the White Mage, Chemists in FF Tactics can restore HP, revive allies with Phoenix Downs, or cure poison without waiting for spell cast times, reducing your combat risk. Therefore, they are amazing at the start of the game, and the item’s abilities set is powerful even in the late game, plus they can use guns!
However, the Chemist will lack damage, specifically range, and quickly be outdone by the White Mage or Black Mage. But, you can still build an effective Chemist as your primary job or secondary to rely on its utility on the battlefield. As a secondary job, a chemist’s abilities can be very helpful on front-line units using dual-wield and physical attacks to heal incoming damage with auto-potion or revive others in emergencies.
This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to make the most effective Chemist build in Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles.
Chemist Job Progression Path

The Chemist job progression path depends on whether you want an offensive or defensive-focused build. As you reach level three, you can swap to Black or White Mage. For a pure support and healer, the best path is White Mage while Black Mage and Summoner are your go-to jobs for massive AOE damage.
However, we recommend that you level as a Chemist for many levels and acqumulate mulitple abillities from the Chemist skill set. Abilities like Auto-Potion, Throw Items, and Treasure Hunter become useful no matter what on any job as you progress throughout the game.
For this build, we recommend you go along the support and spellcaster route. Spend most of your time leveling as Chemist, White Mage, then Time Mage. Pair either White Mage or Time Mage abilities with your secondary Chemist abilitiy set. This allows you to remove status effects, instantly revive allies, and heal with X-Potion not worrying about MP. This gives you an edge in sustained and difficult fights. Overall Chemist Build Progression:
- Chemist
- White Mage
- Black Mage (to unlock Time Mage)
- Time Mage
Chemist Ability Progression

For ultra-fast progression, use the Squire, not the Chemist, as your first job. Pick up JP Boost ability, equip it in your support slot, then swap to Chemist. This helps you rapidly acquire JP and helps while leveling and grinding JP.
As you start on Chemist, prioritize Phoenix Down and Potion to keep you and your team alive. Next, work on utility status effect pickup like Eye Drops and Antidote and Hi-Potion / X-Potion as you reach higher level. Before you move off of Chemist to White Mage, get Throw Items. This is critical in tough fights where you need instant revives and healing vs. waiting for the spell to trigger.
As you further invest in Chemist abilities, look to obtain Ether and Elixir as some of the end-game items and Auto-Potion as one of the best defensive reactions in the game. You can also pickup Move +1 from the Squire in addition to JP Boost. However, your best movement ability will come from Time Mage, Teleport.
Chemist Key Abilities to Take
| Type | Ability | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Action | Items | instant healing and revives |
| Secondary Ability | Time Mage | Buff and Debuff |
| Reaction | Auto-Potion | auto healing |
| Support | Swiftspell | faster spell casting |
| Movement | Teleport | best movement ability |
Your overall best action abilities will come from White Mage, Time Mage, or Chemist. Always use Chemist (Items) in your secondary slot so you have instant healing and utility.
For reaction ability, the best by far is Auto-Potion which you learn from the Chemist. Auto-Potion will chose the lowest potion in your inventory so make sure it’s as high as possible and eventually X-Potion.
For support ability, level using the Squire’s JP Boost. This will increase your JP gains and make acquiring new abilities each. However, when there are tough fights you can swap to Throw Items if you’re on White Mage or another job outside of Chemist. Two alternatives are Swiftspell from Time Mage which speeds up cast times or Halve MP from the Summoner.
For Movement abilities, look to get +1 Move early from the Squire. Treasure Hunter is useful at end game with the Chemist and the Deep Dungeon but not early. The beset mid-game is Move +2 from the Thief, however that requires a lot of job hopping to unlock. Therefore, stick with Move +1 then gain Teleport with Time Mage. Just be wory, the further you try to move, the lower the probability.
Best Chemist Action Abilities
- Items (Chemist) – essential healing, utility, without MP or cast times
- Time Magick (Time Mage) – best buff ability set pairs well with secondary ability that can heal
- White Magick (White Mage) – compliments support style with healing and some damage via Holy.
Best Chemist Secondary Abilities
- Time Magick (Time Mage) – best buff ability set pairs well with secondary ability that can heal
- White Magick (White Mage) – compliments support style with healing and some damage via Holy.
Best Chemist Reaction Abilities

- Auto-Potion (Chemist) – triggers a potion of lowest quality when hit in combat. Massive auto-heal makes you much harder to kill. Use X-Potions on Wiegraf fight to survive initial attack.
- Critical Quick (Time Mage) – if you go to critical HP you get an instant turn. Great to counter if you are low HP.
- Mana Shield (Time Mage) – Converts incoming HP Damage to MP loss.
- Magick Counter (Black Mage) – reflects back magic spell, offensive minded.
Best Chemist Support Abilities
- Swiftspell (Time Mage) – lowers cast time, allowing for near instant spellcasting.
- Halve MP (Summoner) – reduces MP Cost of spells by half, helpful if you’re using massive Summoner spells.
- Magick Boost (Black Mage) – increases power of offensive and defensive spells, great for raw healing or damage.
- JP Boost (Squire) – purely for grinding and power leveling JP.
- Throw items (Chemist) – lets you throw items at range which is very helpful if your character is blocked and cannot move to an adjacent tile. Only use this if you’re playing another job besides Chemist.
- JP Boost (Squire) – purely for grinding and power leveling JP. Use this mainly when grinding or playing fights that aren’t that difficult to beat.
Best Chemist Movement Abilities
- Teleport (Time Mage) – can move anywhere on map but it has a chance of failing
- Move +2 (Thief) – great all around movement ability though Move +1 from Squire easier to learn
- Treasure Hunter (Chemist) – allows you to find items moving around and must have for Deep Dungeon
Best Gear Choices for Chemist Job
The key thing to remember is that the Chemist’s core ability, ‘Item,’ is not affected by their stats (PA or MA). Therefore, their gear should focus on Speed (Sp), HP/Durability, and Movement. They also get to use Guns later on, which are a great source of reliable ranged damage independent of their stats.
Early in Final Fantasy Tactics, focus on obtaining knives, hats, and clothing. Survival is the focus, so prioritize cheap gear upgrades as they unlock. Your biggest help is accessories; look to put something in that spot you most need.
In the mid-game, focus on equipping robes or armor from caster jobs for extra HP/MP. Daggers with speed boosts like Main Gauche are useful for defense.
Later in the game, acquire defensive gear like Genji Shield or Crystal Helm/Armor for durability. Chemists don’t scale offensively, so optimize survivability.
Beginner Chemist Gear/Mid-Game Gear (Chapter 1–3)
| Slot | Recommended Gear | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon | Dagger / Mythril Gun | Reliable damage early with consistent hit rate. |
| Armor | Leather Plate | Early armor with good HP boost for survivability. |
| Helmet | Plumed Hat | Cheap hat with some MP |
| Accessory | Battle Boots | Helps with movement +1 |
Advanced Chemist Gear/End-Game Gear (Chapter 4+)
| Slot | Recommended Gear | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon | Stone Gun (Poach Dark Behemoth) | Elemental guns deal high, reliable ranged damage regardless of PA/MA. |
| Armor | Wizard Clothing | Boost HP and defense |
| Helmet | Lambent Hat | Boost Speed and MA |
| Accessory | Angel Ring | Prevents KO |
Best Party Members for Chemist

The best party members to combine with a Chemist Build are two front-line melee damage dealers, one damage dealing spell caster, then a flex spot. Overall, you want multiple characters that can heal, damage, and especially have some type of range for when you get in a jam. Below are our recommendations when you can use five party members in a battle:
- 2x Knights or Monks: High HP, and high utility, these two jobs are the backbone of your front-line assault. Monks have more self-sufficiency, while Knights are simpler with more HP.
- 1x Black Mage or Summoner: These units are your go-to high damage especially within an area. However, they can have long cast time or hurt other friend targets in the area.
- 1x Archer or Thief: When you need utility, take either Archer for range damage or Thief for speed and stealing. They won’t be as dynamic in combat, but give you a well rounded team. You can swap one out for another spellcaster for more damage but less utility.
General Tips and Strategy
When starting the Chemist, swap jobs to Squire and learn JP Boost first. Even stay with Squire to learn move +1 then swap because these two abilities will make your life much easier. Always position your Chemist in the rear or corners, and end turns hidden from enemies line of sight to limit damage.
As you start to progress, unlock Phoenix Down and Potion so you can heal and revive allies. You can also use potions on undead to cause damage. Make sure to unlock Auto-Potion early as it’s one of the best survivability tools in FFT. Stick with Chemist for awhile and unlock abilities before moving onto White Mage or Black Mage.
End-game players will likely stick with Time Mage or Summoner as their go-to jobs. Time Mage for healer build and Summoner for damage oriented build.
Combat Tips
The biggest combat tip for the Chemist is understanding your range and limitations. You can throw items to revive and heal allies. Moreover, if you are on another job that requires cast time, factor this into your action. Meaning, if it’s easier to revive a downed ally immediately with a Phoenix Down, then do it.
Also stock up on potions after each encounter, especially if using Auto-Potion reaction. Get the high ground when possible and line of sight enemies behind rocks and pillars. If you’re playing a healer or support style, use an action every turn to buff, heal, or remove negative effects. Sometimes it’s best to do damage if you can get a high percentage chance to kill a target. However, spells like Haste from the Time Mage on your high damage output characters is usually a better use of actions.
Recommended Stat Growth Path
As a Chemist, your stats growth are weaker than other jobs. Typically, White Mage and Time Mage are the best jobs to level as because your overall character will grow in stats. Monk or Knight can be helpful to gain extra HP or physical resistance. Meanwhile, Black Mage can be helpful for Magic Attack. For a balanced build, spend most of your time as a White or Time Mage while leveling.
Chemists’ growths are mediocre. For optimal stat gains:
- Physical Growth: Level as Knight or Monk for HP/PA.
- Magical Growth: Level as Black Mage/Time Mage for MA.
- Balanced Builds: Avoid leveling extensively as Chemist—use it for unlocking skills, not growth.
Chemist Job Build Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Chemist job viable in the late game?
Not as a primary class, since its stats are poor. However, Item remains one of the most valuable secondary abilities in the game, keeping Chemist relevant.
How does Chemist job perform in late-game or Deep Dungeon?
Chemists themselves are weak, but Auto-Potion + Throw Item remains strong. Most players transfer Item to tankier jobs for Deep Dungeon runs like Time Mage or White Mage.
What’s the best secondary job for a Chemist build?
White Mage for healing redundancy or Time Mage for speed and buffs. Both give Chemist greater battlefield utility.
Can Ramza make good use of the Chemist build?
Yes—Ramza’s high base stats make him far sturdier than a normal Chemist. Equipping Item on him creates a reliable emergency support role while still letting him contribute offensively.
