Dragoon Job Overview

The Dragoon (or Lancer) in Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles (the remaster) is a powerful physical damage dealer that excels in single-target burst and unique survivability. The job specializes in using Jump attack, which deals heavy damage and it can bypass terrain and obstacles. Your character jumps in the air to return later dealing massive damage to a single target. However, you must time this properly because if someone moves, it will land in empty space negating any damage.
Dragoons excel in mid- to late-game when their Jump skillset, armor, and Speed growth allow them to deliver devastating aerial strikes while avoiding retaliation. Dragoon uses Spears giving them a longer reach than normal melee attacks (up to three squires away!). Therefore, it’s a great job to avoid melee attacks, have high survivability and good fun factor. The downside is mainly their Jump mechanic can be tricky to land, but paired with the Monk ability set and you should have plenty of versatility.
Below we walk you through how to setup your Dragoon build in FFT Remaster.

Dragoon Job Progression Path

The Dragoon requires the Thief to be at level four to unlock. Therefore, you’re likely to start Squire, Archer, Thief, then Dragoon. However, we suggest taking the Monk route first. This will give you powerful melee damage but also healing and revives. Then, you want to transition to the Dragoon job for end-game tanking and amazing survival. Below is our recommended route, though not the fastest, the best all around:
Monk Route (step one)
- Squire Level 2: Stay as a Squire for awhile and don’t progress ASAP. You want to learn Throw Stone to hit targets early and early JP. JP Boost to power through abilities. Counter Tackle and Movement +1 help fill in your missing abilities early. Then, you can learn Focus to power grind with one ability. You can move on at this point and focus on reaching Monk ASAP.
- Knight Level 3: Your goal is to reach Monk fast so you can bypass the Knight entirely unless you want to Rend (Destroy) weapons. Just reach level 3 quick and grind the Monk for a long time.
- Monk: spend a ton of time here learning Chakra, Revive, Aurablast, Shockwave, Counter, and eventually First Strike. The Monk can be used for as many levels as you want because of it’s great stat boost. Once you have range, healing, etc, then move to route two. It’s advised you spend time grinding up the weaker jobs and NOT bring them to tough story fights.
Dragoon Route (access job)
- Archer Level 3: now you must swap back to an inferior job the Archer and power level it quickly. Go to the Mandalia plains and fight over and over with JP Boost equipped so you don’t have to use it in a tough fight. The only ability worth learning here is Concentration and or Aim +1 if you have the JP.
- Thief Level 4: next, you swap to Thief for four levels with some decent abilities. You first want to unlock Steal Gil since it’s only 10 JP and it gives you an ability to use immediately. Next get Steal Heart which is OP early in the game. Then, save up for Movement +2 which you can use for the entire game. Lastly, you can grab Poach which helps when playing as a Dragoon, killing critters, and selling or using their skins for materials.
- Geomancer: While you don’t need the Geomancer for the Dragoon, you want Attack Boost support ability. Plus if you ever want to play the Ninja, this will be worth your time. Save up 400 JP and get Attack Boost then move to Dragoon.
- Dragoon: now you’ve reached your final goal and have all the abilities needed to dominate without back tracking much!
Dragoon Ability Progression

The most important abilities to unlock on your Dragoon job is Horizontal and Vertical Jump +2. This helps you learn and implement the jump mechanic while you save up for farther reaching abilities. Below are the suggestions for unlocks on the Dragoon Job:
- Horizontal Jump 2: basic jump ability horizontal tiles +2 to reach targets a little ways away from you.
- Vertical Jump 2: helpful when facing missions with high hills and steep cliffs.
- Dragonheart: one of the best reactions for survival giving you an edge as a tank.
- Horizontal Jump 8: this is your end-game jump up to 8 tiles
- Vertical Jump 8: same as horizontal, nothing can escape your reach!
- Equip Spear: if you like the spear as a weapon due to it’s range, unlock this.
- Ignore Elevation: helpful in specific encounteres where you need to reach a high area.
Dragoon Key Abilities to Take
| Type | Ability | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Action | Jump | Range and elemental damage |
| Secondary Ability | Martial Arts | utility and healing |
| Reaction | Dragonheart | stops and damages attackers |
| Support | Attack Boost | increases physical damage |
| Movement | Move +3 | best movement ability |
This setup assumes you will be playing Dragoon as your main job with Monk Martial Arts as your secondary ability. Below we explain the optimal Dragoon setup and flexible options depending on your playstyle and build:
- Jump (Dragoon): useful for massive range and helps when you need to avoid AOE damage.
- Martial Arts (Monk): the Monk as your secondary ability slot ensures you can heal, revive, and cleanse. Monk also has AOE Shockwave if multiple targets in a line.
- Dragonheart (Dragoon): this is great for tanking and the “never-die” concept that makes the Dragoon so helpful to have on your team. You can swap this out for First Strike, Counter, Evasion, or other options.
- Attack Boost (Geomancer): set and forget boost to raw PA and you will hit much harder. Like Reactions, you need alternatives for fight dependent and grind time.
- Movement +3 (Bard): the best movement ability however the Bard is annoying to unlock and there are other options for you.
Best Dragoon Action Abilities

- Jump (Dragoon) – your Dragoon basic Jump ability to leap and attack enemies. You can equip it in the secondary slot but it’s not that useful. Therefore, only use it while playing the Dragoon and leveling.
- Martial Arts (Monk) – great utility and damage from the Monk. Stick with this job for awhile until you unlock most of it’s abilities.
- Fundamentals (Squire) – Your first starting job and it’s useful for awhile and becomes progressively more powerful. Unlock the basics as it can be useful to have in the secondary ability while grinding JP with Focus and JP Boost.
Best Dragoon Secondary Abilities

- Martial Arts (Monk) – By far the best secondary ability set. Once you learn Chakra and Revive, you mainly use Monk as a secondary job the entire game when not playing the Monk. Alternatively, you can use Fundamentals and Focus when power leveling and grinding.
- Time Magicks (Time Mage) – while you’re not a spellcaster, unlocking the Time Mage and Haste can be a game-changer to speed up your jump ability.
- Arts of War (Knight) – the Rend and destroy equipment option is helpful in certain encounters. A good Thief who can steal is also helpful as an alternative.
Best Dragoon Reaction Abilities

- Dragonheart (Dragoon) – Auto-Reraise makes the Dragoon one of the hardest physical units to permanently take down.
- First Strike (Monk) – this will absolutely shred any attacker with damage before they attack. Also, they won’t activate their attack! So even if you don’t kill them outright, it’s a 100% counter to any melee attacker. Downside is, it won’t work on range spells or spellcasting so you need additional options.
- Auto-Potion (Chemist) – triggers a potion of lowest quality when hit in combat. Massive auto-heal makes you much harder to kill. Use X-Potions on Wiegraf fight to survive initial attack.
- Counter (Monk) – returns damage to user helpful at start. This is a better alternative to Counter Tackle and it’s worth the 300 JP early on.
- Counter Tackle (Squire) – grab this right away and move onto Counter with Monk quickly.
Best Dragoon Support Abilities

- Attack Boost (Geomancer) – the logical way to increase your overall damage boosting PA. You won’t be using dual wield much so this is your go-to most of the game.
- Concentration (Archer) – ensures, attacks always hit their target. This is 100% useful on boss fights where they have extremely high evade chance.
- JP Boost (Squire) – purely for grinding and power leveling JP. Use this mainly when grinding or playing fights that aren’t that difficult to beat.
- Equip Spear (Dragoon) – Lets you take spear range advantage on other classes.
Best Dragoon Movement Abilities

- Movement +3 (Bard) – by far the best, but super annoying to unlock. Teleport from the Time Mage is another option but also 3,000 JP and a spellcaster Time Mage required. Therefore, you’re likely to use Movement +2.
- Movement +2 (Thief) – great all around movement and it’s not annoying to get in the progression chain of Dragoon.
- Jump +3 (Dragoon) – Improves vertical mobility even further.
- Ignore Elevation (Dragoon) – Negates terrain restrictions; excellent quality of life.
Best Gear Choices for Dragoon Job
The main pieces of gear you want increase Physical Attack (PA). Secondary to that is Evasion chance and HP. You will want high survivability so be careful not to emphasize damage too much. Moreover, you want to buy extra accessories for specific boss fights with status effects heavy abilities in later chapters. Doom, Sleep, and Stop are your biggest threats and can wipe your party so make sure to keep one or two of them on hand.
Beginner Gear/Mid-Game Gear (Chapter 1-3)
| Slot | Recommended Gear | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon | Mythril Spear | Early reliable power spike. |
| Shield | Mythril Shield | Boost block chance. |
| Armor | Mythril Armor | Boost HP and durability. |
| Helmet | Mythril Helm | Great HP boost early. |
| Accessory | Power Wrist | Boosts PA for higher Jump damage. |
Advanced Gear/End-Game Gear (Chapter 4+)
| Slot | Recommended Gear | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon | Holy Lance | Best-in-slot for PA and elemental bonus damage. |
| Shield | Crystal Shield | Boost block chance. |
| Armor | Crystal Armor | Maximizes HP. |
| Helmet | Grand Helmet | Best defense and HP. |
| Accessory | Bracer | Bracer for raw PA |
Best Party Members for Dragoon
While playing the Dragoon, you will fit the role of single target damage tank. You want another melee build with you, two spellcasters, and a flex character. The flex character can be a special character, Thief, or something you enjoy using. Below are our suggestions:
- Dragoon/ Monk (you): Your character meant to be a front-line damage dealer that can self-sustain, heal, and revive.
- Ninja or Monk: A Ninja is a great choice for their high speed, damage, and ranged attacks. Samurai can be helpful for AOE damage and debuffs, but keeping it simple with multiple characters that can revive and do high damge is useful.
- Black Mage or Summoner: This is your primary area-of-effect (AoE) damage dealer, tasked with hitting as many enemies as possible. While Black Mage is a beginner job, it’s extremely strong throughout all of the game. You can pair with Time Mage for utility, White Mage for healing, or even Items and Throw Items from the Chemist for ease of play.
- White Mage or Time Mage: This character provides crucial buffs, healing, and support. A White Mage focuses on healing and defense, while a Time Mage can offer powerful buffs and debuffs.
- Thief: The final spot is flexible. A high-speed Thief is useful for stealing rare gear from enemies, while a second spellcaster like a Summoner can provide more AoE damage. Alternatively, adding another Ninja can boost your overall melee damage output.
General Tips and Strategy
The Dragoon thrives in terrain-heavy, tactical encounters where vertical mobility and timing separate the good from the great. Their defining ability, Jump, lets them deliver devastating single-target damage while staying completely safe mid-air, making them excellent for punishing high-value enemies, bosses, and backline casters.
To maximize this potential, players must master the ability’s timing and leverage the class’s unique mobility. Jump’s delay is based on the Dragoon’s Speed, making it crucial to target immobile, charging enemies or to queue the Jump early in the turn order; this delay can be dramatically reduced by a supportive Time Mage’s Haste.
Beyond Jump, Dragoons use Spears to strike two tiles away, providing extended range control that is safe from common counter-attacks, and this range can be maximized with abilities like Jump 8 or Attack Boost for standard attacks.
Combat Tips
Furthermore, Dragoons are natural vertical menaces who should seek to control the high ground on elevation-heavy maps. Their superior Jump stat, especially when combined with Ignore Elevation or Jump +3, allows them to reach spots most classes cannot, enabling safe attacks from above and gaining the natural +1 damage per height level. Once a Jump lands, however, the Dragoon becomes vulnerable, emphasizing the need for robust survivability and positioning.
Players should retreat slightly after a devastating strike, equip heavy armor to tank stray hits, and utilize backup sustain plans like the Dragoon’s own Dragonheart (for automatic Reraise) or the Monk’s Chakra. The Dragoon performs best when receiving support: Haste from a Time Mage is the top priority for reducing Jump delay, while White Mages and Monks provide essential healing and defensive buffs. Finally, fully optimizing the Dragoon’s mobility using Move +2 or Germinas Boots allows them to dominate the map, manipulate enemy AI by baiting ranged attacks from high ground, and execute advanced strategies like a Haste + Jump Chain to overwhelm key targets.
Dragoon Job Build Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Dragoon’s Jump ability work?
When a Dragoon uses Jump, they leap into the air and become untargetable until they land. The delay before landing depends on the unit’s Speed, faster Dragoons land sooner, making the attack more accurate. Damage is based on the Dragoon’s PA (Physical Attack) and weapon power, meaning stronger spears and higher PA directly boost Jump damage.
Can the Dragoon’s Jump miss?
Yes, but only if the target moves before the Dragoon lands. If you target a stationary or “charging” enemy (like a caster or archer preparing an action), the Jump is guaranteed to hit. Using Haste, Immobilize, or smart CT timing makes Jump nearly 100% reliable.
Does the Samurai’s Attack Boost increase Jump damage?
Yes, Attack Boost directly increases all PA-based physical attacks, including the Dragoon’s Jump and basic spear attacks. It’s one of the best support abilities for maximizing Dragoon DPS, providing about a 33% boost to physical damage.
What’s the best secondary skill set for a Dragoon?
Monk gives great sustain with Chakra and ranged options like Shockwave.
What’s the best reaction ability for a Dragoon?
The best reaction is Dragonheart, which gives Auto-Reraise when the Dragoon is KO’d. It’s extremely powerful in tough battles, allowing your unit to revive automatically after being defeated. First Strike is another strong choice if you prefer consistent retaliation over revival.
