Geomancer Job Overview

The Final Fantasy Tactics Geomancer build is unique in that it uses mystical powers drawn from the ground and terrain to fight. While their attacks are physical, the Geomancer can also control powers lying dormant in the surrounding terrain. You can cast Geomancy abilities like Sinkhole to immobilize the enemy or Swap/Quicksand to inflict the death status effect. However, the enemy needs to be on that specific natural terrain type for an ability to work, adding a layer of complexity. This makes the Geomancer both powerful and unpredictable. The job is best used when you know the specific terrain prior to the fight.
The upside of the Geomancer build is that many abilities can inflict extra status effects on enemies in the surrounding terrain. These status effects can confuse, silence, slow, or result in instant death! Moreover, the Geomancer has access to heavy armor, swords, and a variety of weapons. Therefore, you can think of the job as a hybrid playstyle between spellcaster and physical damage dealer. You will also have extra range due to your terrain abilities Elemental.
In this best build guide, we will walk you through how to make a Geomancer build, and what selections are critical for your success in FF Tactics!
Geomancer Job Progression Path

The Geomancer is unlocked by reaching level four as a Monk. The general path has you start as a Squire, reaching level 2 to unlock the Knight. Swap to the Knight and reach level 3 to unlock the Monk. Level with the Monk to four and you will have the Geomancer unlocked. The Geomancer is required to unlock the end-game jobs of Dancer, and Ninja. Here’s an example job progression path and important things to consider before moving onto the next in the chain:
- Squire: learn the basic abilities don’t move off right away, Tailwind, Focus, JP Boost, and Move +1. Next, you can move to Chemist to learn some basic healing utility, it will slow your progression, but help in the long run.
- Optional Chemist: learn potion, Phoenix Down, Auto-Potion, and Potion so you can increase your survivability.
- Knight: you can learn Rend Weapon or Equip Sword which is useful playing as a Ninja, move on quickly.
- Monk: spend most of your time here unlocking almost every ability as they are all useful.
- Geomancer (this build!): your main job that you can pair Monk Martial Arts as your secondary skill set.
Geomancer Ability Progression

Below are the priority abilities to unlock as a Geomancer and why for FFT:
- Attack Up (Support Ability): This is arguably the most valuable ability in the entire Geomancer skillset. It’s a support spell that gives your unit greater damage by increasing your physical attack power by 33%, a huge bonus for any physical attacker. Many players master the Geomancer job just to get more damage, as it’s a core component of many powerful classes like the Ninja or Monk.
- Tanglevine, Contortion, Sinkhole, and Waterwalk (Geomancy Skills): These four Geomancy skills are your bread-and-butter. They are tied to the most common terrain types you’ll encounter in the early and mid-game: grass, stone, dirt/road, and water. By learning these, your Geomancer will almost always have a terrain-based attack available, making the class effective. The added status effects (Stop, Petrify, Don’t Move, Frog) are a nice bonus.
- Nature’s Wrath / Counter Flood (Reaction Ability): This reaction ability automatically uses the correct Geomancy skill to counter a physical attack from an adjacent enemy. Since Geomancy skills never miss and can inflict status effects, this is a great way to punish enemies for getting close to your Geomancer. It also doesn’t require you to have learned the specific Geomancy skill, making it highly efficient.
- Ignore Terrain (Movement Ability): This skill allows a character to walk through watery terrain without a movement penalty. While not a game-changer, it’s a solid utility ability that can be very helpful on certain maps, particularly those with rivers or swamps. This is preferable to skills such as Lava Walking because it works everywhere.

Geomancer Key Abilities to Take
| Type | Ability | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Action | Geomancy | primary Geomancer skills |
| Secondary Ability | Martial Arts | healing and revives |
| Reaction | Auto-Potion or Nature’s Wrath | Healing or damage |
| Support | Attack Boost | Boost PA |
| Movement | Movement +2 | easy access movement |
Below are the best Geomancer abilities to take, which mixes from different jobs as you progress throughout FFT:
- Geomancy (Action Ability): Your core ability as a Geomancer. You can also swap this to your secondary skill set and use the Monk as primary to heal, and revive.
- Martial Arts (Secondary Ability): useful for healing and ranged damage. The Monk allows your Geomancer build to be more self-sufficient in combat not relying on healing from other units. You can also use Chemist Items in this position if you didn’t spend many levels on the monk.
- Auto-Potion (Reaction Ability): Learned from the Chemist, it’s by far the highest survivability reaction in FFT. However, it doesn’t return damage to melee attackers. Early in the game use Counter, and eventually spend time leveling as a Chemist just for Auto-Potion. However, Nature’s Wrath can be very strong for reactions so swap in and out if you need more healing or damage.
- Attack Boost (Support Ability): Learned from the Geomancer, you boost your physical attack by 33%. This gives you massive raw power when dealing physical damage.
- Move +2 (Movement Ability): Learned from the Thief, this is an incredible movement ability that allows the Monk to get into the action quickly. Other options are Move +1 from the Squire and Teleport from Time Mage. However, Teleport can be unreliable and Move +2 will get you through the entire game.
Best Geomancer Action Abilities
- Elemental – land based physical damage and status effects
- Martial Arts – physical damage from Monk with healing and reviving
Best Geomancer Secondary Abilities
- Martial Arts – best used in secondary ability set so you can heal and revive allies.
- Fundamentals (Squire / Gallant Knight) – Your first starting job and it’s useful for awhile and becomes progressively more powerful. Even at end game, you can use Dual Wield Ninja support ability and equip heavy armor making it powerful throughout the entire game.
- Time Magicks (Time Mage) – while you’re not a spellcaster, unlocking the Time Mage and Haste can be a game changer to speed up your abilities.
- Arts of War (Knight) – the Rend and destroy equipment option is helpful in certain encounters. A good Thief who can steal is also helpful as an alternative.
Best Geomancer Reaction Abilities
- Auto-Potion (Chemist) – triggers a potion of lowest quality when hit in combat. Massive auto-heal makes you much harder to kill.
- Nature’s Wrath (Geomancer) – return damage with elemental physical damage
- First Strike (Monk) – offensive, strikes an enemy before they hit you doesn’t work on magic or range. Swap in with melee heavy fights.
- Dragonheart (Dragoon) – Auto-Reraise you one of the hardest physical units to permanently take down.
- Counter (Monk) – returns damage to user helpful at start. This is a better alternative to Counter Tackle and it’s worth the 300 JP early on.
- Counter Tackle (Squire) – grab this right away and move onto Counter with Monk quickly.
Best Geomancer Support Abilities
- Attack Boost (Geomancer) – increases overall physical attack power passively.
- Dual Wield (Ninja) – allows you to attack twice if you have two weapons equipped.
- Poach (Thief) – allows you to poach monsters for rare items, unique way to get gil/items
- JP Boost (Squire) – purely for grinding and power leveling JP
- Concentration (Archer) – ensures, attacks always hit their target.
Best Geomancer Movement Abilities
- Move +2 (Thief) – best all around move bonus
- Move +1 (Squire) – early choice
- Treasure Hunter (Chemist) – allows you to find items moving around and must have for Deep Dungeon
Best Gear Choices for Geomancer Job
The Gemoancer’s gear should focus on boosting their Physical Attack and HP.
- Weapon: Swords are the Gemoancer’s primary weapon. The Excalibur and Save the Queen are great options for their high Physical Attack and ability to grant permanent Haste.
- Shield: The Escutcheon (II) is a great choice for its high block rate.
- Headgear: Heavy helmets like the Diamond Helm or Thief Hat are good options.
- Armor: Heavy armor like the Plate Mail or Diamond Armor are the best choices for their high physical defense.
- Accessory: The Power Gauntlet is a fantastic choice for its boost to Physical Attack.

Best Party Members for Geomancer
- Geomancer (you): your character, meant as a tanky front-line damage dealer.
- Monk: the Monk or Ninja makes a great second melee damage dealer, pick Monk for high survival or Ninja for more range.
- Black Mage or Summoner: This is your primary area-of-effect (AoE) damage dealer, tasked with hitting as many enemies as possible.
- White Mage or Time Mage: This character provides crucial buffs, healing, and support. A White Mage focuses on healing and defense, while a Time Mage can offer powerful buffs and debuffs.
- Thief: The final spot is flexible. A high-speed Thief is useful for stealing rare gear from enemies, while a second spellcaster like a Summoner can provide more AoE damage. Alternatively, adding another Ninja can boost your overall melee damage output.
General Tips and Strategy
Since the Geomancer skills are 100% hit rate, you have a great chance against high evasion bosses. However, you need to stand on those specific terrain in order to activate the abilities. Therefore, always position your Geomancer on a terrain tile that offers the elemental ability you need. If the enemy is weak to fire, look for a wooden bridge or a brick floor.
A Geomancer’s basic physical attack uses their physical attack (PA) stat, while their Geomancy skills scale with their magical attack (MA) stat. While this seems clunky, you can use your basic attacks on low defense units and use your Geomancy skills on low magic resist targets. Lastly, make sure to use status effects of your attacks to your advantage like Tremor, which can cause enemies to be confused attacking each other!
This dual nature is a huge advantage. Use your basic attack on enemies with low physical defense, and save your Geomancy skills for high-defense, low-magic-resist targets.
Combat Tips
The best combat tip for the Geomancer is using the reaction ability from the class Nature’s Wrath. When you counter an attack with this skill, you automatically return damage and a geomancy status effect without having to know the ability or be on the correct terrain. This allows you to gain the benefit of the status effects without being in perfect position for your terrain in combat.
Recommended Stat Growth Path
The Geomancer job has excellent HP and Physical Attack growth, but very poor Speed and Magic Attack growth. You want a mix of Monk and Ninja to increase HP and Speed. The Thief is also a good consideration early because of it’s boost to speed without having to wait until late end game in order to unlock the job. To create a well-rounded Geomancer, you should level up in a way that balances these stats.
- HP & PA: The Gemoancer job itself is great for this. The Knight and Monk are also great for their HP and Physical Attack growth.
- Speed: The Thief job has the best Speed growth in the game. Spending some time as a Thief can help your Gemoancer get more attacks in.
- MA: If you want to use a secondary magic ability, consider spending time as a Black Mage or Summoner.
Geomancer Job Build Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Geomancer job viable in the late game?

How does Geomancer job perform in late-game or Deep Dungeon?
Weaker in comparison to Monk and Summoner because of it’s unpredictable terrain mechanic.
Solid utility, though their damage falls behind top-tier jobs. Still valuable for Attack Up.
What’s the best secondary job for a Geomancer build?
Knight for Breaks or Time Mage for mobility.
Can Ramza make good use of the Geomancer build?
Yes—Ramza’s durability and stats make him a strong Geomancer who can combine Geomancy with his unique skillset.
