Introduction to Ramza and the Ivalice Chronicles
Ramza Beoulve stands at the heart of Final Fantasy Tactics, serving as the main character whose journey shapes the fate of Ivalice. In the Ivalice Chronicles version of the game, players experience an enriched storyline and enhanced gameplay, making Ramza’s progression more important than ever. As a Squire, Ramza starts with unique abilities and superior stat growth compared to other characters, giving him a natural edge in early battles. His exclusive access to certain skills and equipment options allows for flexible builds and powerful frontline combat roles.
Final Fantasy Tactics Ramza Build Overview

The key difference between Ramza and any other unit starting in FFT Remaster is stat growth and new abilities as a Squire. Ramza gains access to Mettle vs. Fundamentals, and as you progress throughout the chapters, you gain new abilities only for him. Specifically, Chant, Steel, Tailwind, Shout, and Ultima. This allows Ramza more flexibility when playing the Squire or after Chapter 3, the Gallant Knight. The Ramza Squire job is unique compared to other units, offering exclusive skills and stat growth that set him apart. It also incentives players to use him as a physical damage dealer since the Squire and later Gallant Knight favor this type of gameplay.
Moreover, Ramza gains superior stats and growth multipliers while staying as a generic Squire. It won’t be the best stat growth, but playing as a Squire won’t punish you like other units. Lastly, Ramza’s Squire class can equip a wider range of equipment, including Knight Swords, Heavy Armor, and Shield, with fewer limitations than other characters. Therefore, you have more options and flexibility when playing a physical damage dealer. Additionally, Ramza’s faith stat can significantly influence his effectiveness, especially if you plan to use magic-based jobs or reaction abilities like Shirahadori, making faith an important consideration for maximizing his potential.
Thus, we’ve designed Final Fantasy Tactics Ramza build to arrive at the Ninja for end-game Chapter 4 and Deep Dungeon gameplay. The best way to play Ramza is progressing through a physical damage dealer path, unlocking key abilities and skills along the way so you won’t have to double back to useless jobs later on. With that said, let’s explain how the progression works, and what are the most critical abilities to take. Ramza’s journey and build are especially important given the events of the War of the Lions, which shape the game’s storyline and his role within it.

Ramza Build Job Progression Path

The overall goal is to reach Monk, then eventually Ninja. You will need to follow two paths in order to make that happen.
Monk Path
- Squire Level 2: Stay as a Squire for awhile and don’t progress ASAP. You want to learn Throw Stone to hit targets early and early JP. JP Boost to power through abilities. Counter Tackle and Movement +1 help fill in your missing abilities early. Then, you can learn Focus to power grind with one ability. Salve can be helpful but the rest of the abilities can be skipped until later Chapters where you will want Shout.
- Knight Level 3: You should only take Equip Swords from the Knight and move off of it quickly because the Monk is so much more powerful. Remember Ramza can equip different armor so it’s not that useful to play as a Knight on your main character.
- Monk: spend a ton of time here learning Chakra, Revive, Aurablast, Shockwave, Counter, and eventually First Strike. The Monk can be used for as many levels as you want because of it’s great stat boost. However, if you get to Ninja and learn Dual Wield, you will double it’s damage. Therefore, learn the basics, and move onto path number 2 to unlock the Ninja.

Ninja Path
- Archer Level 4: now you must swap back to an inferior job the Archer and power level it quickly. Go to the Mandalia plains and fight over and over with JP Boost equipped so you don’t have to use it in a tough fight. The only ability worth learning here naturally is Concentration and or Aim +1 if you have the JP.
- Thief Level 5: next, you swap to Thief for five levels with some decent abilities. You first want to unlock Steal Gil since it’s only 10 JP and it gives you an ability to use immediately. Next get Steal Heart which is OP early in the game. Then, save up for Movement +2 which you can use for the entire game. Lastly, you can grab Poach which helps when playing as a Ninja, killing critters, and selling or using their skins for materials.
- Geomancer Level 2: while you only need two levels of Geomancer, stick with it until you unlock Attack Boost to deal bonus damage. This will help your Ninja gameplay even more since Ninja’s have built in Dual Wield. Once you have that, move onto the Ninja.
- Ninja: your number one priority here is to unlock Dual Wield after Throw Shuriken. Then, you can go back to Monk or any melee job and level them up for specific abilities to fill out your utility. The Monk can then strike twice with Dual Wield equipped in the support slot. Fill out Reaction and Support abilities for Chapter 3 and beyond where you need flexibility for difficult story fights.
Depending on your gaming strategy or personal preferences, you might choose different class combinations for Ramza. Some players prioritize damage and speed by focusing on Ninja, while others prefer the tankiness and utility of Monk. Your approach to gaming – whether you value magic, survivability, or just want to try fun builds – will influence which progression path and job synergy you select.
Ramza Ability Progression

The most important abilities to gain for the Squire or Gallant Knight are those that allow you to attack early. Throw Stone is helpful when you have zero range starting out to make sure you can hit enemies. Counter Tackle ensures you will do return damage to melee enemies. Also, Focus helps gain JP when no targets are in range. Below are the suggestions for key ability unlocks on the Squire using Ramza with additional suggestions in another section:
- Throw Stone: cheap cost and ensures you can do range damage right away.
- JP Boost: save up and get this so you can fly through abilities and terrible jobs you don’t want to stick with.
- Counter Tackle: super helpful for melee return damage unless you rush to Monk for Counter.
- Movement +1: helpful right away until you get to Thief.
- Focus: pair with JP Boost and a grind spot to power level any job. Just put Mettle as your secondary abilities and spam this on Archer or Geomancer.
- Salve (optional): you can take this if you don’t plan on playing the Monk very long since that job has a cleanse.
- Shout (Chapter 3): amazing self-buff that even late game players should unlock.
- Ultima (Battle late game): won’t spoil this one, but it’s obvious this is one of the strongest abilities in the game and it will unlock after a specific battle near end-game. Requires decent MA Growth to be effective.
Ramza Best Abilities to Take
| Type | Ability | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Action | Throw | Range and elemental damage |
| Secondary Ability | Martial Arts | utility and healing |
| Reaction | First Strike | stops and damages attackers |
| Support | Attack Boost | increases physical damage |
| Movement | Move +3 | best movement ability |
This setup assumes you will be playing either the Ninja or Monk as your main job and you plan on grabbing extra support and reaction abilities. We explain below different options and flexibility is key later in FFT Remaster, even if it seems early you use the same three abilities.
- Throw (Ninja): playing Ninja as your main job gives you high speed stats allowing you to go first and nuke the enemy team. Plus, you can unlock more throw options in later game and it’s essential for beating the toughest bosses in the game (Wiegraf specifically).
- Martial Arts (Monk): the Monk as your secondary ability slot ensures you can heal, revive, and cleanse. Monk also has AOE Shockwave if multiple targets in a line.
- First Strike (Monk): while First Strike doesn’t work against ranged targets, it ensures you can blast almost any character that tries to hit you in melee. However, you will need other options in spellcaster, heavy ranged fights.
- Attack Boost (Geomancer): set and forget boost to raw PA and you will hit much harder. Like Reactions, you need alternatives for fight dependent and grind time.
- Movement +3 (Bard): the best movement ability however the Bard is annoying to unlock and there are other options for you.
Best Ramza Action Ability

- Throw (Ninja) – your bread and butter job with range and unique throw items. Just realize, you won’t get them back so stick with Bombs and Shuriken to start.
- Martial Arts (Monk) – great utility and damage from the Monk. Stick with this job for awhile until you unlock most of it’s abilities.
- Mettle (Squire / Gallant Knight) – Your first starting job and it’s useful for awhile and becomes progressively more powerful. Even at end game, you can use Dual Wield Ninja support ability and equip heavy armor making it powerful throughout the entire game.
- Other Jobs – You mostly only want to use other jobs while grinding or to progress to the list above. Most of the other jobs won’t have near the power but some contain one or more abilities useful to unlock in specific situations.
Secondary Ability

Martial Arts (Monk) – By far the best secondary ability set. Once you learn Chakra and Revive, you mainly use Monk as a secondary job the entire game when not playing the Monk. Alternatively, you can use Mettle and Focus when power leveling and grinding.
Best Ramza Reaction Abilities

- First Strike (Monk) – this will absolutely shred any attacker with damage before they attack. Also, they won’t activate their attack! So even if you don’t kill them outright, it’s a 100% counter to any melee attacker. Downside is, it won’t work on range spells or spellcasting so you need additional options.
- Auto-Potion (Chemist) – triggers a potion of lowest quality when hit in combat. Massive auto-heal makes you much harder to kill. Use X-Potions on Wiegraf fight to survive initial attack.
- Reflexes (Ninja) – while not as good as the others above, Reflexes helps avoid almost any attack since it boost evade. Helpful if you don’t have others unlocked and you’re very low HP.
- Counter (Monk) – returns damage to user helpful at start. This is a better alternative to Counter Tackle and it’s worth the 300 JP early on.
- Critical: Recover HP (Monk) – Not the best reaction, but it can carry you through Wiegraf fight which is the hardest in the game for players since it’s solo 1v1.
- Counter Tackle (Squire) – grab this right away and move onto Counter with Monk quickly.
Best Ramza Support Abilities

- Attack Boost (Geomancer) – this is the best option to boost PA ONLY if you’re playing as a Ninja. Since you have built in Dual Wield, you won’t need to slot it in your support slot.
- Dual Wield (Ninja) – allows you to attack twice if you have two weapons equipped. Playing any other job but Ninja, put this as your support ability.
- Concentration (Archer) – ensures, attacks always hit their target. This is 100% useful on boss fights where they have extremely high evade chance. As a Ninja, swap between Attack Boost or Concentration.
- Equip Swords (Knight) – this can be useful when playing the Ninja, but not as good as others.
- JP Boost (Squire) – purely for grinding and power leveling JP. Use this mainly when grinding or playing fights that aren’t that difficult to beat.
- Poach (Thief) – when playing the Ninja, swap this in to get easy items to sell and poach. The Gil can add up over time especially if you’re constantly getting killing blows.
Best Ramza Movement Abilities

- Movement +3 (Bard) – by far the best, but super annoying to unlock. Teleport from the Time Mage is another option but also 3,000 JP and a spellcaster Time Mage required. Therefore, you’re likely to use Movement +2.
- Movement +2 (Thief) – great all around movement and it’s not annoying to get in the progression chain of Ninja.
- Movement +1 (Squire) – starter choice that’s useful to unlock right away.
- Lifefont (Monk) – this gives you a bit of HP when moving and it can be useful if you really want healing.
- Treasure Hunter (Chemist) – mainly this is used to get extra items randomly on tiles or Deep Dungeon at the very end of the game.
Best Equipment Choices for Ramza Build

The main pieces of equipment you want increase Physical Attack (PA). You can sacrifice HP for pure PA because as a Ninja, you are likely to attack first. Moreover, with First Strike, anyone in melee range can get one shot before they even hit you. At end game, you’ll want to keep your HP above 200 to 250, but anything more won’t be needed typically. Don’t just use the outfitter for gear as it will want to equip max HP vs. damage stats.
Beginner Equipment
| Slot | Item | Bonus |
|---|---|---|
| Main Weapon | Fist (Monk) | – |
| Secondary | None | – |
| Head | Headgear | PA+1 |
| Chest | Adamant Vest | – |
| Accessory | Power Gauntlets | PA+1 |
Advanced Equipment
| Slot | Item | Bonus |
|---|---|---|
| Main Weapon | Spellbinder | Applies Disable |
| Secondary | Spellbinder | Applies Disable |
| Head | Headband | PA+2 |
| Chest | Power Garb | PA+2 |
| Accessory | Bracers | PA+3 |
Best Party Members for Ramza
When playing Ramza, coordinating with your teammates is essential to maximize team cohesion and effectiveness. You will want multiple spellcasters with one and at least another melee unit. Typically, you want one AOE damage dealer spellcaster, one support, and a utility character like a Thief to help steal items. Below are the suggestions when using Ramza build:
- Ninja / Monk (you): Your character is meant to be a front-line damage dealer that can self-sustain, heal, and revive.
- Ninja / Monk: A Ninja is a great choice for their high speed, damage, and ranged attacks. Samurai can be helpful for AOE damage and debuffs, but keeping it simple with multiple characters that can revive and do high damge is useful.
- Black Mage or Summoner: This is your primary area-of-effect (AoE) damage dealer, tasked with hitting as many enemies as possible. While Black Mage is a beginner job, it’s extremely strong throughout all of the game. You can pair with Time Mage for utility, White Mage for healing, or even Items and Throw Items from the Chemist for ease of play.
- White Mage or Time Mage: This character provides crucial buffs, healing, and support. A White Mage focuses on healing and defense, while a Time Mage can offer powerful buffs and debuffs.
- Thief: The final spot is flexible. A high-speed Thief is useful for stealing rare gear from enemies, while a second spellcaster like a Summoner can provide more AoE damage. Alternatively, adding another Ninja can boost your overall melee damage output.
Ramza Build General Tips and Strategy
Speed is your friend because you are likely to go first and more often than other units. Therefore, the Ninja is designed to maximize this stat. You can equip gear that gives you this or look to add a Time Mage spell haste cast on your Ramza. This will allow you to take turns more often, thus producing higher damage.
Also consider that higher ground can give you an advantage when throwing. You also don’t have to charge into every battle, but can use throw, reposition, and wait for the enemy to get closer.
Ramza Build Combat Tips
The general overall premise with Ramza build is to Throw, Position, Attack. You want to look at a unit’s movement capabilities, and if a spellcaster, factor in additional range. Go to the edge of where they cannot reach you and Throw on turn one. This way, you won’t be vulnerable to tons of units attacking you right away. Then, on turn two charge in to the flank or rear of the most critical unit and attack. On boss fights where you only need to kill one target, use every unit to attack that target turn one.
Maybe the hardest fight in the game is Wiegraf where you are force to play one vs one and he chunks you turn one. During this fight, turn one throw and flee out of range. He will move close enough that you can reach him on turn two. If you have high enough PA, you can attack him from the flank and kill him outright avoiding any complex strategies. Alternatively, use Auto-Potion or Critical HP reactions.
Just remember that you can die sometimes as long as you have multiple characters to revive you. Therefore, you can go full glass cannon and charge in with First Strike. Assuming the nearby enemies are melee, they sometimes will nuke themselves by attacking you and getting a reaction trigger. However, in the event you die, make sure at least two characters have revive to keep you in the fight.
