Summoner Job Overview

The Final Fantasy Tactics Summoner build is a powerful area based (AOE) damage spellcaster who can shred multiple enemies in a single turn and deal massive damage. Many of their magic attacks and attack commands also don’t hit friendly team mates in their radius. Uniquely, the Summoner can also access friendly healing and buff spells with a high success rate, making them one of the best spellcasters in all of FF Tactics.
The major downsides to the Summoner are, they have low survivability and a long time to act in order to deal damage to your foes. The long cast times on summoning spells leave you vulnerable to attack during battle, not to mention the massive magic MP cost, making them a high-risk, high-reward spell caster. With the proper build setup, specifically support ability, the Summoner can work around these issues and provide your party massive AOE damage and support utility.
Let’s walk you through the Summoner job, and how to create the ultimate build in FFT!
Summoner Job Progression Path

To unlock the Summoner, you must reach level three with Time Mage. First, start out with the Chemist to level 2, then switch to Black Mage to at least level 3. You’ll spend some time learning abilities with these first two jobs, so don’t move off right away. Then, level up the Time Mage to 3 and swap to the Summoner. It should take you a lot of levels to reach this point because many of the previous jobs abilities are so strong, there is no need to rush.
Here’s how the best job progression path works for the best Summoner Build in FFT:
- Chemist: learn potion, Phoenix Down, Auto-Potion, Antidote, and X-Potion. Don’t move off of this job right away, these things will be very helpful throughout the game.
- Black Mage: learn each elemental damage spell early like Fire/Thunder/Blizzard. You should also learn Toad, higher level Firaga, and Flare later in the game.
- Time Mage: While not your core job, it’s super useful to learn Haste, Slow, Teleport, and Swiftness.
- Summoner: your core job, where you can experiment with secondary job and swap to acquire new spells.
Once you unlock the Summoner, spend time investing in the basic abilities, possibly before saving up for the massive heavy hitters (Bahamut, fan favorite). Let’s explain the ability progression next for the Summoner build.
Summoner Ability Progression

Your early priority, like the Black Mage, is to unlock different elemental damage for the Summoner job with Shiva, Ifrit, Ramuh. You can then avoid spells that are ineffective due to enemies resistances. Next, you want to work on utility spells like Moogle for AOE healing, Golem for a shield, and Carbuncle for AOE reflect on allies. Once you have well rounded kit, then you save up for the massive ultra might Bahamut and then things get fun! Also consider Faerie if you want more support, as it’s a more powerful heal. Below is a sample progression list for the Summoner abilities you should take:
- Shiva, Ifrit, Ramuh for elemental damage such as lightning.
- Moogle (AoE healing), Golem (party shield), Carbuncle (status support).
- Bahamut, and Leviathan for massive AoE power.
- From Black Mage: Flare for single target burst damage kills.
- If using Time Mage as secondary skill, Meteor is good, or White Mage with Holy vs undead monsters.
Summoner Key Abilities to Take
| Type | Ability | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Action | Summon | Main damage abilities |
| Secondary Ability | Time Magicks or White Magicks | Buffs and debuffs |
| Reaction | Auto-Potion | automatic healing |
| Support | Swiftspell or Halve MP | quicker cast times to avoid mistakes |
| Movement | Teleport | massive move potential |
There are many possibilities for skills here. The Summoner job wants to pair their secondary job with something that can heal, debuff, or cast spells quickly. Time Mage for Haste and Slow is great or White Mage to have more healing. Also, consider Chemist Items early since it requires no casting time to heal with potion and you can restore MP with Ether.
An alternative (sweaty) way to play is as a Samurai because they get Physical Attacks and the skill Iaido which grants haste, and Regen. However, it’s more complex, and it would take a lot of time to level other jobs to reach Samurai. Below is our overall recommendation of abilities for the Samurai best build:
- Primary: Summon Magic (Shiva, Ifrit, Ramuh, Golem, Bahamut).
- Secondary: Time Magic or White Magic.
- Reaction: Auto-Potion for self-healing
- Support: Swiftspell for quicker spellcasting
- Movement: Manafont
- Action (Summoner focus): Shiva, Ifrit, Ramuh, Golem, Bahamut.
Best Summoner Action Abilities
- Summon Magic – huge AOE damage and you scale well with stats throughout the game.
- Time Magic – slows and speeds up time and manipulate larges numbers of players and enemies.
Best Summoner Secondary Abilities
- Time Magic (Time Mage) – Used to buff and debuff with haste, slow, and damage with Meteor
- White Magic (White Mage) – Go-to healing and reviving spells
- Iaido (Samurai) – heavy armor spellcaster
- Black Magic – elemental AOE damage
- Items (Chemist) – great early or when you need a revive without a cast time
Best Summoner Reaction Abilities
- Auto Potion (Chemist) – Consumes potions after being hit, by far the best for pure survival
- Critical: Quick (Time Mage) – Grants an instant turn when entering critical HP status
- Manafont (Mystic) – Recovers MP when hit by spell.
- Magick Counter (Black Mage) – reflects back magic spell, offensive minded
Best Summoner Support Abilities
- Swiftspell (Time Mage) – lowers cast time, critical unless you have Haste active
- Magick Boost (Black Mage) – increases power of offensive and defensive spells
- Halve MP (Summoner) – reduces MP Cost of spells by half
- JP Boost (Squire) – purely for grinding and power leveling JP
Best Summoner Movement Abilities
- Manafont (Mystic) – Restores MP while moving
- Teleport (Time Mage) – can move anywhere on map but it has a chance of failing
- Move +2 (Thief) – great all around movement ability though Move +1 from Squire easier to learn
- Treasure Hunter (Chemist) – allows you to find items moving around and must have for Deep Dungeon
Best Equipment Choices for Summoner Job
Your goal with the Summoner build is to stack as much Faith stat as possible. Faith increases power of all magical attacks and healing including summons. Brave doesn’t matter for the Summoner build, so look to increase this and MA as much as possible for huge massive AOE damage. Below are some Equipment suggestions for the Summoner:
Beginner Equipment / Mid-Game Equipment (Chapter 1–3)
| Slot | Recommended Gear | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon | Mage’s Staff | +1 to MA |
| Armor | Wizard Clothing | Boost HP and MP |
| Helmet | Wizard’s Hat | +1 MA |
| Accessory | Magepower Gloves / Mage’s Cloak | Boost MA and evasion |
Advanced Equipment / End-Game Equipment (Chapter 4+)
| Slot | Recommended Gear | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon | Wizard’s Rod | MA+2 |
| Armor | Luminous Robe or Robe of Lords | Big HP and MA |
| Helmet | Lambent Hat | Boost Speed and MA |
| Accessory | Red Boots or Magepower Gloves | Boost Move or MA |
Best Party Members for Summoner

As a Summoner, it’s critical you have two front-line tanks or melee damage dealers to draw attention. You may also want to have a support unit dedicated to buffs, debuffs, and healing. Lastly, a utility character or special character is helpful specifically a Thief or a Ninja with Thief abilities to steal items. In FFT, you usually get to bring 5 units onto the battlefield and in some cases four. Below are the best in order for a well rounded party combined with a Summoner build in Final Fantasy Tactics:
- 1x Summoner: your character designed for massive damage with AOE spells and abilities.
- 1x Monk: the Monk will be your front-line Tank, capable of high-damage and self-sustain. You can swap to Knight here as well though it’s not as good once completely leveled up.
- 1x Ninja: take a secondary unit like the Ninja to get high damage early in the turn order. Monk or Knight also work in this position.
- 1x White Mage: This is your support unit dedicated to healing and buffs. It’s best to pair the White Mage and Time Mage combo to cast Haste or Protect on turn one until you can reach enemy units.
- 1x Thief: you want one utility character which the Thief is best because it can steal end-game best in slot gear and charm enemies. Alternatively, you can bring another AOE nuker like a Summoner or Black Mage.
General Tips and Strategy
The Summoner will out damage the Black Mage as the game progresses. Another advantage of the Summoner of the Black Mage is the AOE damage spells don’t hurt your friendly targets. However, you want to learn some Black Mage spells, specifically Flare which is a non-elemental single target damage ability.
Your overall goal with the Summoner is to solve the issue of high MP cost and long Cast Times. This can be done with gear or abilities. Even the Chemist Items Ether can return MP or having a Monk with Chakra can keep you continuingly casting spells.
Combat Tips
The best combat tip for the Summoner is knowing your cast range. Don’t gear near a melee target unless you can reach them and cast a spell without being blocked. Moreover, if they get close to you, target them, and move away. You shouldn’t feel the need to charge in and cast a super long spell that will likely result in your death. Instead, cast a buff with your secondary ability like TIme Mage Haste which helps alievate the long cast times.
On turn one, you can pre-buff with Golem or Carbuncle before enemies get in range. Once targets are in range, move in closer (just at the edge) and cast your big AOE nukes, leaving your foes dead or critically wounded. Don’t forget to use powerful status effects like Silence or Doom to disable or weaken your opposition.
Recommended Stat Growth Path
Summoner growth is good for MP and MA, but weaker for HP and Speed.
- Physical Growth: Avoid.
- Magical Growth: Summoner and Black Mage for strong MA.
- Balanced: Mix in Time Mage for survivability.
