Time Mage Job Overview

The Final Fantasy Tactics Time Mage build is the overall best job (class) to buff and debuff enemies in the game. You manipulate time with support spells like Slow and Haste, which are excellent to buff dual wield physical damage builds as well. The job goes well with almost any other spellcasting job due to it’s utility and even warps space time! Not only that, but Time Mage has one of the most powerful spells in the game: Meteor. And if that weren’t good enough, the Time Mage has great stats while leveling, meaning you can play countless levels without worry about degrading your character.
The big negative to Time Mage is it’s overall survivability and cast times. Some of the spells can take a while to cast before effectively boosting allies on receiving turns, leaving your unit vulnerable, especially if you don’t position out of line of sight. But, with the right Support and Reaction abilities, you can counter this weakness, and create a super powerful support or offensive Time Mage build.
Time Mage Job Progression Path

While the Time Mage is a “support” style job, it’s unlocked by leveling Chemist to level 2, then Black Mage to level 3. The Time Mage is the stepping stone to reaching the more powerful Summoner job, which is an enhanced Black Mage. The reason this is important to note, the Summoner can heal with AOE, not only do damage. Therefore, you can play the Time Mage in one of two ways: Time Mage + Summoner (offensive) or Time Mage + White Mage (defensive healer).
For the best Time Mage, we recommend using White Mage or Chemist. The pure healer and support gives your units freedom to focus purely on damage. Moreover, with the White Mage and Time Mage setup, you will still have two powerful offensive spells Holy and Meteor. Therefore, we recommend this path and will give you some options as well. Here’s the ideal leveling path for the Time Mage:
- Chemist: learn potion, Phoenix Down, Auto-Potion, Antidote, and X-Potion. Don’t move off of this job right away, these things will be very helpful throughout the game.
- Black Mage: only here to level quickly and reach Time Mage. Gain some elemental damage like Fire/Thunder/Blizzard is okay early game. The best spell overall is Flare but takes a ton of JP, so don’t save up early in the game.
- Time Mage: your core job, spend tons of time and prioritize Haste, Slow, Teleport, Swiftspell, and Meteor.
- White Mage: if you want a support build, double back to White Mage and learn more abilities. Holy, Cure, Revive, Arise are essential to pair with Time Mage’s utility.
- Summoner: eventually, you may want more offensive spells which you can switch to Summoner. Moogle, Golem, Faerie all have defensive utility or healing. Halve MP can also be a helpful support ability to learn, same as Bahamuton of the best damage sources in all of FFT.
- Arithmetician: this is an end game, complex job that can be super powerful. While not always recommend, it’s a true max level job that you can use in FFT.
Time Mage Ability Progression

Your overall priority abilities to unlock are Haste, Slow, and Gravity. From here, you then move onto learning teleport for increased movement, and Swiftspell to reduce cast times. Below is a list of the most important abilities to unlock in order for the Time Mage Build:
- Haste/Hastega: These are the Time Mage’s signature abilities. They increase an ally’s speed, allowing them to act more frequently. Hastega is an AoE version that can hit multiple allies at once based on the destination tiles, increasing the target’s turn order and speed.
- Slow/Slowga: These abilities decrease an enemy’s speed, making them act less frequently. They are great for crippling a fast enemy or for controlling a large group of enemies.
- Gravity: conjures up a supermassive field, inflicting damage with powerful gravitational forces. Lowers the targets HP by half. Amazing in boss fights with massive HP enemies.
- Teleport (Movement Ability): This is one of the best movement abilities in the game. It allows you to move to any non-obstructed tile within a certain range, regardless of height.
- Swiftspell (Support Ability): This is a must-have for any spellcaster. It reduces the charge time of all spells, allowing you to cast spells much faster.
- Meteor: The ultimate Time Magic spell. It deals massive, non-elemental damage to a single target and is a great way to finish off a tough enemy.
Early: Learn Haste and Slow.
Mid: Gravity and Teleport for utility.
Late: Swiftspell and Meteor for endgame power.
Time Mage Key Abilities to Take
| Type | Ability | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Action | Time Magicks | Main support abilities |
| Secondary Ability | White Magicks | healing and revives |
| Reaction | Auto-Potion | automatic healing |
| Support | Swiftspell | quicker cast times |
| Movement | Teleport | massive move potential |
The Time Mage wants to pair their primary abilities with White Magic from the White Mage, or Summon from the Summoner Job. Next, use a reaction for survivability or offensive damage and movement that fits your playstyle. Below are recommendations for the best Time Mage abilities to take:
- Primary: Time Mage
- Secondary: White Mage or Summon
- Reaction: Auto-Potion for self-healing
- Support: Swiftspell for quicker spellcasting
- Movement: Teleport
Time Magic (Action Ability): Your core ability Haste (hastens the localized passage of time), Slow (effectively reducing enemy speed) and Meteor (summons an enormous meteor).
White Magic (Secondary Action Ability): Learned from the White Mage, this is a fantastic secondary ability for a Time Mage. It allows you to heal and revive critically wounded allies, making you a powerful support unit. Make sure to unlock Holy because it can do huge damage to undead targets.
Swiftspell (Support Ability): Learned from the Time Mage job itself, this is a must-have for any magic user. Alternatively, you can use Halve MP if you struggle with sustain or Arcane Strength for more damage.
Auto-Potion (Reaction Ability): automatically heals you when you take damage, forgoing the need to heal yourself often unless one-shot. Learned from Chemist.
Teleport (Movement Ability): Learned from Time Mage, you can pick any block on the map and travel. It does have a chance to fail, therefore Move +1 or Move +2 is more reliable.
Best Time Mage Action Abilities
- Time Mage – slows and speeds up time and manipulate larges numbers of players and enemies.
- White Mage – compliments support style with healing and some damage via Holy.
Best Time Mage Secondary Abilities
- White Magic (White Mage) – Go-to healing and reviving spells
- Summon Magic – AOE without friendly fire though long cast time
- Black Magic – elemental AOE damage
- Items (Chemist) – great early or when you need a revive without a cast time
Best Time Mage Reaction Abilities
- Auto Potion (Chemist) – Consumes potions after being hit
- Critical Quick (Time Mage) – if you go to critical HP you get an instant turn. Great to counter if you are low HP.
- Mana Shield (Time Mage) – Converts incoming HP Damage to MP loss
- Magick Counter (Black Mage) – reflects back magic spell, offensive minded
Best Time Mage Support Abilities
- Swiftspell (Time Mage) – lowers cast time
- Magick Boost (Black Mage) – increases power of offensive and defensive spells
- Halve MP (Summoner) – reduces MP Cost of spells by half
- JP Boost (Squire) – purely for grinding and power leveling JP
Best Time Mage Movement Abilities
- Teleport (Time Mage) – can move to distant locations on the map but it has a chance of failing
- Move +2 (Thief) – great all around movement ability though Move +1 from Squire easier to learn
- Treasure Hunter (Chemist) – allows you to find items moving around and must have for Deep Dungeon
- Manafont (Mystic) – gains MP when moving.
Best Gear Choices for Time Mage Job
The Time Mage’s gear should focus on boosting their Magic Attack and MP. Use your accessory to boost evasion attack or HP if you feel squishy. Your head piece is often the most important for improving MP which you can struggle with early. You can always swap to Items if you’re running out of MP healing. Below are some recommendations for gear:
Beginner Gear / Mid-Game Gear (Chapter 1–3)
| Slot | Recommended Gear | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon | White Staff | Removes Doom |
| Armor | Wizard Clothing | Boost HP and MP |
| Helmet | Wizard’s Hat | +1 MA |
| Accessory | Magepower Gloves or Mage’s Cloak | Boost MA / evasion |
Advanced Gear / End-Game Gear (Chapter 4+)
| Slot | Recommended Gear | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon | Mage’s Staff | MA+1 |
| Armor | Luminous Robe | Huge HP and MP gains |
| Helmet | Lambent Hat | +1 Speed, +1 MA |
| Accessory | Magepower Gloves | +2 MA |
Best Party Members for Time Mage

The overall party composition to pair with a Time Mage is two front-line damage dealers, a AOE spellcaster, and a utility character. In FFT, you usually get to bring 5 units onto the battlefield and in some cases four. Below are the best in order for a well rounded party:
- 1x Time Mage: your character meant to buff, heal, and support damaging units like Monk and Summoner.
- 1x Monk: the Monk will be your front-line Tank, capable of high-damage and self-sustain. You can swap to Knight here as well though it’s not as good once completely leveled up.
- 1x Ninja: take a secondary unit like the Ninja to get high damage early in the turn order. Monk or Knight also work in this position.
- 1x Black Mage or Summoner: Stay backline together, mutually benefiting from support and damage. This is your AOE spellcaster dedicated to high area damage mainly. Depending on your ability setup for your Time Mage, you want one or more spellcasters for groups of enemies.
- 1x Thief: you want one utility character which the Thief is best because it can steal end-game best in slot gear and charm enemies. Alternatively, you can bring another AOE nuker like a Summoner or Black Mage.
General Tips and Strategy
The Time Mage’s primary role is to manipulate the flow of combat and support your party from a safe distance. Your main priority should be to stay out of the enemy’s line of sight, using your spells to control the battlefield. Start by buffing your allies with Haste, targeting your fastest character first to give your team a significant tempo advantage. On your second turn, focus on debuffing key enemies with Slow to cripple them and manipulate the turn order in your favor.
As combat progresses, you can shift your focus to either supporting your team with healing spells or dealing damage with high-level abilities like Holy or Meteor. In the early game, spamming Haste is often enough to win fights. In the mid-game, your ability to control the map with Slow and Stop will make you an invaluable asset. By the end game, your Time Mage can use game-changing spells like Quick or Meteor to make a decisive impact on the battle.
Combat Tips
While the Time Mage’s main purpose is support, don’t forget their offensive spells. Use them to clear out groups of enemies or to finish off a tough enemy. Gravity is particularly useful against high-HP enemies like bosses. Always seek the height advantage, as being on a higher tile provides a bonus to your spell range and accuracy. Teleport can be an invaluable tool for bypassing terrain and positioning your Time Mage perfectly. The Swiftspell support ability is critical for a Time Mage, as it allows you to cast your spells much faster, which is essential for getting your buffs and debuffs off before the enemy can react.
If you find yourself running low on MP, consider bringing a Chemist to provide mana support with their Items ability. You can also swap out your support skills depending on your needs; if you require quicker cast times, go for Swiftspell , but if you need more damage, consider an ability like Magic Attack UP. Always remember to protect your Time Mage, as they are a fragile but essential unit.
Recommended Stat Growth Path
The Time Mage job has excellent Magic Attack and MP growth, but very poor HP and Speed growth. To create a well-rounded Time Mage, you should level up in a way that balances these stats.
- Magic Attack & MP: The Time Mage job itself is great for this. The Black Mage and Summoner are also great for their Magic Attack and MP growth.
- Speed: The Thief job has the second best Speed growth in the game. Spending some time as a Thief can help your Time Mage act more frequently.
- HP: The Monk and Squire jobs have excellent HP growth.
