Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles Jobs Explained
Your characters in FFT pick one Job (class), then evolve into other Jobs to become a more advanced build. Moreover, you will have multiple characters to manage, and forming the ideal party revolves around different roles to fulfill in combat. Balance is key when selecting your Job along with any NPC friendly you plan on bringing with you.
Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster uses Job Points (JP) as its progression, which is just like Experience (EXP) from other RPGs. Each time you act in battle, you gain JP for your current job. As you acquire JP, you can spend it to unlock new abilities and use them across different Jobs. Meaning, your Knight can heal like a Monk, or your Black Mage can cast Haste like a Time Mage. You can also change your active class freely, which acts as somewhat a “respec.”
Job Setup Includes:
- Main Job (determines abilities & stats)
- Secondary Skillset (any learned job)
- Reaction, Support, Movement Skills (freely slotted from learned jobs)
Each Job unlocks by reaching a certain level in prerequisite Jobs. Example:
- Knight = Squire Lv 2
- Black Mage = Chemist Lv 2
- Dragoon = Thief Lv 4 + Monk Lv 3
Now, let’s show you all the base Jobs and eventually the character-specific jobs Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster has to offer.
Base Jobs List (All Generic Jobs)
When you begin your journey in Ivalice, every unit starts as a Squire or Chemist. The Squire is a melee damage dealer to start, while the Chemist can use Potions and acts as a pseudo-healer. Leveling them up unlocks your first real combat classes like Knight, Archer, Black Mage, and White Mage.
Think of them as the baseline of your build. You’ll need to grind these early to open the full Job tree. From there, it’s all about picking the right paths, unlocking advanced Jobs, and combining abilities to make your squad unstoppable. Below are all the Base Jobs in Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster

Squire

- How to Unlock: Default
- Pros: Fast to level, utility skills like ‘Focus’
- Cons: Weak growth, low damage
- Why Use: Absolutely essential to unlock other Jobs
- Tips: Grab ‘JP Boost’ ASAP to speed grind
- All Squire Abilities
The Squire is your foundation job and what you start out as a primary martial damage dealer. It’s the starting Job for every unit, and while it won’t carry you into the late game, it’s absolutely essential early on. Your goal with this Job is to learn “JP Boost” as fast as possible. With that, you can rapidly earn Job Points and start unlocking advanced classes like Knight and Archer. Squires don’t hit hard, and their stats aren’t great, but they level quickly and get you moving through the Job tree.

Another thing to note about the Squire is this is Ramza’s (main character) starting job. Unlike other units, he gets additional abilities as you progress throughout the four chapters. Moreover, he gains better stat growth for sticking with Squire. Therefore, it’s a good place to start and pursue the physical damage dealing path with your main character, though not mandatory!
Last tip, make sure to fill out your reaction (Counter Tackle), Movement (Move +1), and Support ability (JP Boost) before moving on. These simple abilities are super helpful at the start. You can spend some times in the Mandalia Plains. Just click, look for enemies repeatedly, and auto-battle grind JP.

Chemist

- How to Unlock: Default
- Pros: Instant item use, ranged healing
- Cons: Weak offense
- Why Use: Support healing early game
- Tips: Unlock ‘Throw Item’ for flexibility and Auto-Potion for survival
- All Chemist Abilities
Don’t be fooled by the simple appearance of the Chemist, as they are one of the best jobs in the game! The strength of the Chemist as a starting class is that they don’t need MP, and they can heal or revive allies instantly from range. Forget casting delays, Chemists keep your team alive with potions, Phoenix Downs, and status cures. Unlock “Throw Item” ASAP to increase their range and utility. While they bring nothing offensively, they’re reliable support units that let your damage dealers stay in the fight.

While the Chemist seems super basic, it’s one of the strongest jobs in the game because items don’t cost MP, have no cast time, and are effective throughout the game. Consider leveling ANY unit as a Chemist just to gain Auto-Potion. This reaction will heal you when taking damage and is incredible for survivability on any unit or character.
You can also maintain the effectiveness of items early by learning Throw Items. This allows you to heal at range other party members. That way, even leveling as a Black Mage, you can still have all the utility of a Chemist. Therefore, consider sticking with the Chemist at the early portion of the game because so many of the abilities are awesome!

Knight

- How to Unlock: Squire Lv 2
- Pros: Durable tank, breaks gear
- Cons: Slow, easily kited
- Why Use: Great frontline support
- Tips: Learn Rend Weapon, Rend Armor to harass enemies
- All Knight Abilities
The Knight is your frontline tank. High HP, solid defense, and the unique ability to break enemy weapons and armor, and even rend speed. If you need someone to hold a chokepoint or weaken a strong foe, the Knight is the answer. They’re slow, and smart enemies will kite them, so positioning is key. Pair them with a White Mage for healing support and let them focus on harassing the enemy. You can also pair with Fundamentals Squire abilities and use Focus, Throw Stone to have a buff and range. Another option is Items in the early game, so you can heal yourself or others in melee range.

For advanced Knight players, you want to reach the Ninja and unlock “Dual Wield.” This allows the Knight to use two swords, doubling their attack power! You can also use Rend Weapon/Armor/Speed etc. twice with one action. If you love the tanky Knight gameplay, this is the end-game setup that works best.

Archer

- How to Unlock: Squire Lv 2
- Pros: Ranged physical, Charge abilities
- Cons: Charge time can be interrupted
- Why Use: Safe damage early
- Tips: The concentration support ability is helpful in specific boss fights
- All Archer Abilities
Archers bring reliable ranged damage to your early lineup. Their “Aim” abilities hit harder than standard attacks but take time to fire. You’ll want to keep them elevated or behind cover to avoid interruption. Moreover, look to the Combat Timeline for when their aim ability will fire to make sure the unit isn’t dead.

The Archer job is great for supporting melee jobs and whittling down enemies before they reach your melee characters. Not the best long-term option, but their skillset makes for a solid secondary on physical builds. Before you move off the Archer, make sure to grab Concentration if you plan on playing a melee damage dealer. The ability helps when attacking high evasion characters much later in the game.

Black Mage

- How to Unlock: Chemist Lv 2
- Pros: AoE nukes, elemental variety
- Cons: Low HP, casting delay, friendly fire
- Why Use: Excellent damage
- Tips: Pair with Time Mage for casting support
- All Black Mage Abilities
Black Mages are your AoE nukers, high damage dealers, and low survivability units. Their elemental spells hit hard and can clear groups of enemies quickly. But they’re glass cannons, low HP and casting delays make them risky. Use them to deal big damage fast, then reposition. Pair with a Time Mage for Haste to cut down cast times and you’ll have a magic artillery unit ready to blow up the map.

Another trick with the Black Mage is to spend a lot of time leveling as Chemist at the start of the game. You can then use the Items as a secondary ability for a long time and have helpful healing, MP restoration, and reviving powers. For the most raw casting power, make sure to grab Magick Boost support ability. This will boost your spell damage by 33%, giving you incredible damage. Swiftspell from Time Mage and Halve MP from Summoner are also good options.

White Mage

- How to Unlock: Chemist Lv 2
- Pros: Heal, Raise, Protect/Shell
- Cons: Limited offense (Holy spell)
- Why Use: Core healer
- Tips: Learn ‘Raise’ early to save battles
- All White Mage Abilities
The White Mage is your primary healer. With Cure, Raise, Protect, and Shell, they keep your team alive and kicking. They bring no offense, but their utility is critical. Learn “Raise” early, it can flip losing battles. Keep them out of danger and behind your tanky units. Without a good healer, you’re just asking for wipes. If you setup a good party combination, you should have at least one unit a White Mage.

Another idea with the White Mage is to use healing spells offensively. Undead enemies will take damage from healing spells, therefore, consider using them on specific fights. You can also pair White Mage with Summoner if you want more AOE damage. If you struggle with MP cost use Halve MP from the Summoner support abilities. However, if you struggle with cast time, use Swiftspell from the Time Mage. Your support ability is critical to making sure you can cast spells quickly and effectively.

Monk

- How to Unlock: Knight Lv 3
- Pros: High damage, heals self, no MP cost
- Cons: Low range, no AoE
- Why Use: Amazing all-around fighter
- Tips: Chakra is huge heal for team sustain
- All Monk Abilities
Monks are the ultimate self-sufficient physical fighters. They deal heavy physical damage, heal themselves with Chakra, and don’t rely on MP. That makes them durable and extremely good for challenging battles. Their only downside is short range and lack of AoE, but for raw melee power, they’re unmatched early on.
Monks are the best all around job especially early and even at end game. They have great stat growth and can equip dual wield in support slot to strike twice per turn. Therefore, look to level them up as ninja temporarily, then swap back for incredible damage. To counter their only drawback of a lack of range, consider learning the Throw ability from Ninja as well to make the Monk deadly at any range!

Early on, make sure to unlock Aurablast, Chakra, and Revive. This allows your Monk to have range damage, healing, and revive capabilities. You become a offensive off-healer turning the tide of battle. This allows your other party members to free up secondary abilities and not use Items from the Chemist. Once more party members have dedicated roles and healing, then swap to a more niche job to learn specific abilities.
Stay with the Monk for many levels and unlock most of the abilities. Your end goal should be to get the Ninja and unlock Dual Wield. Then, you can return to the Monk and use any secondary ability you want. With Dual Wield in your support ability, the Monk attacks twice! Look for an accessory that boost PA and you can one-shot nearly any enemy after obtaining this ability.

Thief

- How to Unlock: Archer Lv 3
- Pros: High speed, steal equipment
- Cons: Low damage
- Why Use: Steal rare items, mobility
- Tips: Learn ‘Move +2’ for all units
- All Thief Abilities
Thieves are fast, mobile, and can steal gear from enemies. While their damage isn’t great, their value lies in utility. They’re perfect for grabbing rare items, scouting, or getting to objectives first. Learn “Move +2” and use it on other jobs, it’s one of the best movement buffs in the game. Thieves shine in maps with treasure or when you’re hunting specific enemy drops.

Also keep in mind that Thief is the only class that can steal items for enemies. Only certain min-max gear comes from stealing items. Therefore, it’s useful having a Thief, or at least their abilities as secondary on a Ninja simply to acquire end-game gear. Lastly, when leveling as a Thief, make sure to unlock Steal Heart first. This can confuse enemies and force them to fight other units, plus it has nice range.

Time Mage

- How to Unlock: Black Mage Lv 3
- Pros: Haste, Slow, Teleport
- Cons: Long cast times
- Why Use: Turn control
- Tips: ‘Teleport’ = S-tier movement skill
- All Time Mage Abilities
Time Mages are all about turn manipulation. Speed up your team with Haste, slow enemies, and control the flow of battle. Their standout skill is “Teleport,” which lets you warp across the battlefield and ignore terrain. It’s an S-tier movement ability. Cast times are a downside, so plan ahead or pair with Haste. They don’t deal damage, but they win fights by enabling your best units.

The Time Mage job is the ultimate in support. You can pair with Items so you can have quick healing and restore MP. Or, you can equip with Summoner for AOE damage and a little bit of healing. You will either have to deal with low MP or long cast times. This is where you want to pick a specific support ability to counter this issue. Swiftspell from the Time Mage helps with getting spells to cast quicker while the Summoner’s Halve MP helps with sustain. Swap these two in and out and experiement depending on your needs.

Summoner

- How to Unlock: Time Mage Lv 3
- Pros: Massive AoE, summons ignore allies
- Cons: Long cast, MP hungry
- Why Use: Clears mobs fast
- Tips: Keep on high-faith characters
- All Summoner Abilities
Summoners deal huge AoE damage and their spells don’t hit allies, making them safe and efficient. The tradeoff? Long cast times and massive MP costs. They’re ideal for clearing waves or punishing clustered enemies. Keep them on high-Faith units to boost damage. They’re not fast, but when their summons hit, they change the fight in an instant.

The benefit of the Summoner is no friendly fire, plus their abilities have healing and buffs! What’s most important is to use Halve MP to solve the MP drain on huge ability cost. Alternatively, you can use Ether from Items or have a Monk restore MP with Chakra. To solve the issue with long cast times, equip Halve MP from your support ability which makes a huge difference.
Pair the Summoner with Items for easy healing and MP restoration, Time Mage for some buffs and utility, or White Mage for extra healer. It’s a flexible spellcaster that takes a long time to learn all the spells.

Mystic

- How to Unlock: White Mage Lv 3
- Pros: status effects, ignore evastion, support passives
- Cons: No direct damage spells and Low HP and Speed make the Mystic fragile
- Why Use: For crowd control and utility—great at locking down dangerous enemies
- Tips: Boost MA with gear like Magic Gauntlet or Wizard Robe
- All Mystic Abilities
A debuffing caster who manipulates the flow of battle with status ailments and MP control. Mystic abilities rely on your Magic Attack and Faith, making them ideal for supporting mages or disabling enemy threats before they become dangerous.

Orator

- How to Unlock: Mystic Lv 3
- Pros: Speechcraft for control, Invite enemies
- Cons: RNG-based effects
- Why Use: Control or recruit enemies
- Tips: ‘Praise’ boosts Bravery for better damage
- All Orator Abilities
Mediators use speechcraft to control enemies and boost allies. They can inflict status effects or even recruit enemies mid-battle. RNG plays a role, but their “Praise” ability is a sleeper hit – it permanently boosts Bravery, which increases physical damage and reaction ability proc rate. They’re niche, but valuable when you need to buff up or expand your party.

Geomancer

- How to Unlock: Monk Lv 4
- Pros: No MP terrain attacks, strong stats
- Cons: Terrain-based limitations
- Why Use: Passive damage source
- Tips: Good for hybrid physical builds
- All Geomancer Abilities
Geomancers blend solid melee stats with free, terrain-based magic. Their Elemental abilities deal AoE damage without MP, making them sustainable and versatile. You must be on specific terrain in order to use your spells and it’s hard to know which work on what. The easiest is Tanglevine since it’s “grass.” These have additional status effects as well.

The easiest way to make the Geomancer effective is via the reaction ability x. This cast a random ground based attack and it doesn’t matter what you’re standing on or if you know the ability. Moreover, you will want to learn Attack Boost for melee units. This dramatically increases your Physical Attack (PA) power and is one of the best support abilities until you get Dual Wield from Ninja.
Check out the Best Geomancer Build Guide and Best Geomancer Abilities Ranked!
Dragoon (Lancer)

- How to Unlock: Thief Lv 4
- Pros: High HP, Jump avoids damage
- Cons: Long Jump delay
- Why Use: Anti-mage, long-range burst
- Tips: Max Jump skill for mobility
Lancers specialize in high-damage Jump attacks. They launch into the air, avoid damage, and slam down for big burst. Perfect for targeting backline mages or dodging AoE. Their delay can be risky, but once you get the timing down, they’re lethal. Max out their Jump skill to reduce downtime and you’ve got a mobile assassin.

However, you can reach much further with your Spear and you gain access to more armor. This is one of the best pure tank jobs that can do very well as a front line fighter keeping pressure off your other units.
Check out the Best Dragoon Build Guide to help you get started!
Ninja

- How to Unlock: Archer Lv 4 + Thief Lv 5 + Geomancer Lv 2
- Pros: Dual wield, great speed
- Cons: Fragile
- Why Use: High DPS melee
- Tips: Pair with Monk/Thief abilities for burst
- All Ninja Abilities
Ninjas are speed kings with high damage thanks to the Dual Wield ability. They strike twice per attack and can tear through enemies, but they’re fragile. Keep them moving, use terrain, and pair with support skills like Chakra or Steal. They’re not tanks, they’re glass cannons. But if you need a unit deleted, Ninjas are your go-to.

The Ninja is the only job with access to the Dual Wield ability, so you will want to progress to it quickly. Once you unlock this, you can swap back to a Monk or Knight and now attack twice! If you’re playing the Ninja, you want to equip Dual Swords from the Knight or Attack Boost from Geomancer. These two options give you increased damage. Your best secondary ability option is via the Monk to gain healing and revive and use your Throw for range damage.
Check out the Best Ninja Build and Best Ninja Abilities Ranked!
Samurai

- How to Unlock: Knight Lv 4 + Monk Lv 5 + Dragoon Lv 2
- Pros: AoE buffs/debuffs via Draw Out
- Cons: Requires Katana, RNG breaks
- Why Use: Magic support with physical stats
- Tips: ‘Murasame’ for AoE healing
Samurai combine magic utility with strong melee. Their Iaido skills give AoE healing, buffs, or enemy debuffs – perfect for support with damage on the side. Keep spare Katanas on hand since their skills can break them. Use “Murasame” for group healing or “Masamune” for Haste. Excellent secondary for physical builds.

Keep in mind, the Samurai is a good late game unit. You’ll need to invest in a mix of MA and PA depending on your playstyle. They are similar to Monk but have AOE in the area around the unit. Speed and movement per turn is critical to get you into the mix so you can cast heals or damage spells. You can even cause confuse which is a game changer! But make sure to buy tons of katanas as they can break which is annoying.

Arithmetician

- How to Unlock: White Mage Lv. 5, Black Mage Lv. 5, Time Mage Lv. 4, Mystic Lv. 4
- Pros: Free instant AoE spells
- Cons: Hard to unlock, bad stats
- Why Use: Game-breaking support
- Tips: Learn ‘Level’ or ‘Height’ targeting
Arithmetician are slow, weak, and hard to unlock, but they can also break the game in a good way. They cast any learned White, Black, Time, or Mystic spell instantly, with no MP cost, based on unit level or height. Set up the right conditions and you can wipe the map without lifting a finger. Unlocking them takes work, but they’re unmatched in power. Learn Level or Height targeting and prepare to dominate.

Dancer (Female Units)

- How to Unlock: Dragoon Lv. 5, Geomancer Lv. 5
- Pros: AoE debuffs
- Cons: Poor stats
- Why Use: Support role, consistent enemy weakening
- Tips: Pair with ranged reaction skills
Dancers weaken enemies with AoE debuffs through Dance skills like Forbidden Dance. They hit everyone, every turn, applying effects like Slow or Don’t Move. Their stats are low, and they deal no damage, but their passive support is clutch in drawn-out fights. Keep them safe, stack evasion or range reactions, and let their debuffs do the work.
Bard (Male Units)

- How to Unlock: Summoner Lv. 5, Orator Lv. 5
- Pros: AoE buffs
- Cons: Cast delay
- Why Use: Passive buffs over time
- Tips: Keep in backline with defensive gear
Bards are the support counterpart to Dancers. Instead of debuffs, they provide AoE buffs like Haste or Regen with Song abilities. Like Dancers, they’re weak and need protection, but their buffs make your team much stronger over time.
Mime

- How to Unlock: Lv 8 Squire + Lv 8 Chemist + Lv 5 in all other Jobs
- Pros: Copies ally actions for free
- Cons: No command menu, cannot equip items
- Why Use: Amplifies best units’ skills
- Tips: Advanced tactic – not beginner-friendly
Mimes copy the last action taken by an ally with no MP cost and no delay. They can’t equip anything or be directly controlled, but used correctly, they double your strongest unit’s output. Mimic a Black Mage’s spell or a Monk’s punch and you’ve got extra firepower for free. It’s not beginner-friendly, but in the right setup, Mimes are incredible force multipliers.
All Special Jobs (Story Characters Only)
Certain characters have Special Jobs that are narrative-driven units who join the throughout the game. Characters like Cloud, Agrias, Mustadio, Orlandeau, and many others come with their own exclusive job classes – Holy Knight, Machinist, Sword Saint, and more. These units have been reworked and are easier to obtain, earlier, with less chance to miss them. Check out the Best Build for Ramza, FFT’s main character.
| Character | Job | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| Ramza | Squire (Advanced) | Learns unique skills like ‘Shout’ and ‘Ultima’ |
| Agrias | Holy Knight | Built-in Holy Sword AoEs, solid tank |
| Mustadio | Engineer | Gun-based disable skills |
| Orlandeau | Sword Saint | God-tier — combines multiple Holy Sword abilities |
| Beowulf | Temple Knight | Inflicts status with sword strikes |
| Reis | Dragoner | Dragon abilities, excellent stats |
| Cloud | Soldier | Uses Limit Breaks from FFVII |
| Worker 8 | Robot | High armor, punch-based skills |
| Construct 7 | Steel Giant | Unlockable tank unit |
Tips for Job Progression
As soon as you can, get ‘JP Boost’ from the Squire job on every single unit. It’s a Support ability, and it means you’ll earn 50% more JP from every action. This single ability dramatically speeds up your entire progression, letting you unlock and master jobs much, much faster. Don’t leave home without it.
Next, think about taking the best active skills from one job and pairing them with the best reaction, support, or movement skills from another. For example, a Monk with the Knight’s ‘Weapon Break’ or a Black Mage with the Time Mage’s ‘Teleport’ will absolutely domaintae. Your primary job defines your stats and basic attacks, but your secondary ability slot is where you can get creative.
These two hidden stats massively impact your units’ effectiveness are Bravery (physical attackers, reaction abilities) and Faith (magical attackers, spell casting success). Each unit with higher relevant stats will often gain more JP from using corresponding abilities. Don’t let a character’s Bravery drop too low, or they might become useless for reaction abilities!
Below are some other Tips for Jobs progression in Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster
- Use JP Boost from Squire to grind faster
- Leveling in Monk/Ninja gives best physical stat growth
- Faith/Bravery tuning impacts damage and reaction chances
- Teleport and Move +2 are meta for map control
- Hybrid builds like Samurai/White Mage or Ninja/Time Mage are powerful
