Avowed Ranger Build Summary: Arcane Archer

This Ranger build for Avowed excels at range combat, while also using a mixture of spells and status effects for an extra bit of flair and flash. Your primary damage will come from your ranged weapon, the bow, which can easily stun enemies and execute powerful special attacks. On the spellcasting side, we also specialize in Crackling Bolts for shock damage that bounces between targets, further accelerating stuns, and Arcane Veil and Shadowing Step for defensive and escape tools.

This build can completely avoid melee combat and melee weapons as well as heavy armor, going for a much more mobile approach to combat. The Arcane Archer build is the complete package and makes for a fun and powerful playthrough of Avowed at any difficulty level.

Who Should Play the Ranger Build for Avowed?

The Arcane Archer build for Avowed works best for players who who enjoy a fully ranged build, sniping and casting spells from a distance before an enemy can get close. If you enjoy locking down enemies in Vines or with Magical shocks, dodging backwards and escaping into the shadows to reposition you will enjoy this build. If you like seeing tons of devastating criticals over the course of combat with your main weapon and doing those flashy special attacks – this build is also for you.

The Arcane Archer build is perfect for the main quest, side quests, or even increased difficulty modes like Path Of The Damned, making it one of the best builds in Avowed!

Avowed Ranger Build Pros and Cons

The Ranger build for Avowed is incredibly powerful with few drawbacks.

Pros

• Start combat from range to avoid damage
• Big Power Attacks also spread shock damage with unique bow
• Fully Stuns enemies easily
• Good speed and mobility, defense and escape options

Cons

• Weaker at the start of the game
• Medium armor means you will take more damage
• More vulnerable when surrounded by enemies and versus melee attackers

Best Race Options

With five playable races now available following the anniversary update, players have more options than ever to tailor their build. While the stat differences aren’t huge, your choice of playable race does have an impact early on in powering your build, plus you should consider height differences when in playing in first person.

The best playable race for the Ranger Build in Avowed is Elf, as they have the best starting mix of Perception and Dexterity, which will increase your bow range and critical chance along with improved attack speed.

If you’re looking for the best pure damage consider picking Aumaua as they have +2 Might and are also extremely tall which makes it easier to spot targets at the back of groups while in first person combat.

Best Background Choice

Backgrounds in Avowed are primarily a role-playing tool. They shape how you experience the story and how NPCs react to your words, but they don’t create hard mechanical restrictions that matter beyond the early game. Your background also determines your starting stat allocation (you can change this before leaving character creation) as well as your starting weapon in the game’s tutorial.

In terms of roleplaying alignment, the Vanguard Scout is the best background for the Ranger Build in Avowed.

The default attribute layout for the Vanguard Scout provides Constitution, Dexterity, and high Perception without neglecting other stats, and the Vanguard Scout background frequently unlocks dialogue reflecting wilderness experience, tracking ability, ambush tactics, and practical battlefield knowledge. Where other backgrounds rely on book learning or social status, you speak from direct experience surviving in dangerous places.

Best Ranger Attributes

To maximize this Arcane Archer Ranger build in Avowed Character Creation, prioritize the following Attributes first:

1. Dexterity – This is the best stat on the build to get from items because eventually Giatta’s Accelerate ability will fill this role for us. However, attack speed is incredibly important because it allows your power attacks to charge faster, meaning you spend less stamina, and can rip off powerful attacks and eventually free spells much faster.
2. Might – This stat is the main way we can add damage to both our bow and our spell attacks so it is essential. Combine this with our attack speed, and we will be extremely powerful.
3. Intellect – Your Intellect attribute increases your maximum essense which we use with both magical spells and offensive abilities like Barbaric shout.
4. Perception can still be good for your single-target damage because your power attacks with Storm-Sworn can critically hit on their initial hit. Perception also extends the range of your bow, making it easier to hit enemies much farther away than you.

Ranger Build Best Weapons

The best weapon for a Ranger build in Avowed is the Storm-Sworn bow.

Storm-Sworn

• Base Effects
  • Thunder Clap: Killing an enemy deals moderate Stun and Shock Accumulation to nearby enemies
  • Shocking Lash: Hits deal +10% bonus Shock Damage
• Best Enchantment
  • Thunderous Shot: Power Attacks release a Crackling Bolt that bounces between enemies, dealing low damage but high Shock Accumulation

This is the core item for the Arcane Archer that takes the build from a wizard with a bow to an Arcane Archer that fires off spells with your bow. Storm-Sworn has an enchantment upgrade that causes your power attacks to fire off almost a full fat Crackling Bolt, complete with the upgrades from your invested ability points. I cannot overstate the power of this. With this bow, you will be able to fire off a Crackling Bolt with no cooldown, and no essence cost VERY fast. Lightning balls will be bouncing EVERYWHERE stagger locking enemies all over the battlefield. It is as funny as it is powerful.

Special note: The Crackling Bolt from Storm-Sworn inherits the number of bounces from the Crackling Bolt ability points, but it deals less damage than the actual spell making the spell itself still worth casting on cooldown during fights.

The Long Touch

• Base Effects
  • Grim Focus: +10% Critical Hit Chance for Power Attacks while Fine Aiming
  • Lesser Opening Strike: +5% Damage against enemies with full Health
• Best Enchantment
  • Thrill Of The Hunt: Killing an enemy gives you +10% Attack Damage and +20% Attack Speed for 6 seconds

This is the first unique bow you get access to so it is worth using. The enchantment that adds significant critical chance to your “Fine Aiming” or zoomed in power attacks is very nice and makes headshots less necessary, but otherwise it is just a normal bow that encourages zooming in.

Other Weapons

Literally any other weapon type is fine for this build as you typically only need this for breaking pots and other objects quickly. I prefer a one handed weapon such as a mace or a sword such as the Star of Unbeing. Make sure to support whichever backup weapon you choose with the right skills such as Piercing Thrusts for swords and daggers.

Ranger Build Best Armor

The best armor for a Ranger build in Avowed is the Vailian Breastplate, Vailian Boots, and Trickster’s Gloves. The Vailian Breastplate is a great option that can be obtained early, giving damage reduction and lots of bonus movement speed. Vailian Boots are also great for mobility, giving a huge bonus to Dodge Distance. Finally, the Trickster’s Gloves give a huge stat increase to Critical Damage, which greatly amplifies this build’s damage output.

Vailian Breastplate

• Bonus Effect:
  • Lesser Bulwark: +2% Damage Reduction, +1 Additional Damage Reduction
• Enchantment:
  • Quickness: +20% Move Speed

The Vailian Breastplate is the best chest armor for a Ranger build because you can get it early in Avowed, and it gives you a whopping 20% bonus to your movement speed. Movement is critical for a ranger because being faster means you can more easily adjust your position in combat to get the best shots versus your enemies. Vailian Breastplate is also medium armor which gives a solid balance of Damage Reduction while also not losing to much Stamina and Essence.

The Vailian Breastplate is found in a chest in the governor’s bedroom in Fior.

Trickster’s Gloves

• Bonus Effect:
  • +1% Critical Hit Chance
• Enchantment:
  • Fatal Misdirection: +25% Critical Damage

The Trickster’s Gloves are the best gloves for a Ranger Build in Avowed, providing a huge 25% bonus to Critical Damage. This is amazing because we can quickly stun enemies with a Power Attack from the bow and unleash our special bow attack, which fires 4 arrows quickly, one after another! Each arrow fired from the bow’s special attack is a guaranteed Critical Strike, making this single item give you a huge damage spike!

The Trickster’s Gloves can be obtained from the Sand Sea Oasis location in the region of Shatterscarp. Dive to the bottom of the lake and loot the skeleton to obtain the gloves.

Vailian Boots

• Bonus Effect:
  • +5 Carry Capacity
• Enchantment:
  • Duelist’s Dance: +2 Dexterity, +20% Dodge Distance

The Vailian Boots are best for a Ranger Build in Avowed thanks to their Dexterity boost and bonus Dodge Distance. Dexterity is one of the best stats for an Archer or Ranger build in Avowed, as this increases your attack speed, allowing you to fire your bow more quickly. In addition, dodging is one of your best and most reliable tools to avoid taking damage and creating space versus melee enemies, so extra range on that dodge is very nice!

The Vailian Boots can be found inside a small chest near the Riverside Cave in the region of Emerald Stair.

Other Armor Options

Another useful armor for this Ranger build is Stelgaer’s Pride. If you take some damage greater than 20% of your health with this armor equipped, you get a free Barbaric Shout, which staggers nearby enemies and boosts the amount of stun your weapon attacks will inflict, and with a little ability investment, it can also give you a free giant health shield. This is a great defensive tool especially on harder difficulties!

If you prefer to lean more into spell casting for this Arcane Archer, then these bracers are PERFECT. Reduced ability cost is incredibly valuable because we generally will not be using a grimoire, and increased shock damage will be the best thing for us for the rest of the game, thanks to our Crackling Bolt spam. You can buy the Warmage’s Bracers in Fior.

Best Ranger Accessories

The best accessories for a Ranger Build in Avowed are Cartographer’s Companion, the Ring of Pain Amplification, and the Vindictive Band. These accessories boost your raw stats, Critical Hit Damage, and provide a bonus Poison Effect.

Cartographer’s Companion

• Sanza’s Teaching: +2 Dexterity, +3 Perception

Cartographer’s Companion is the best Amulet for the Ranger build, thanks to providing 5 bonus attribute points overall: +2 to Dexterity and +3 to Perception. Both of these attributes are important for the Ranger build, specifically improving attack speed and range.

The Cartographer’s Companion accessory can be looted from one of the corpses in Urvalnau’s Den in the Galawain’s Tusks region.

Ring Of Pain Amplification

• Critical Damage: +15% Critical Damage

The Ring of Pain Amplification provides the perfect complement to this boost, as we are always guaranteed Critical Hits versus fully stunned targets, and this bonus stacks further with items like the Trickster’s Gloves.

Vindictive Band

• Laced Strike: Critical Hits deal Poison Damage

The Vindictive Band accessory gives an easy source of the Poison status effect damage by causing Critical Hits to also poison targets. The Poison effect can be further strengthened through the Ranger skill tree, increasing Poison damage done and even reducing the attack damage of targets who are poisoned, which is great on harder difficulties and versus bosses. It is also extremely easy to apply the effect, as the bow has 4 guaranteed Critical Strikes when using a special attack versus fully stunned targets.

Complete the Cabin Fever side quest in the Dawnshore region to obtain the Vindictive Band.

Other Ranger Accessory Options

The Ring of the Peerless Marksman provides an 10% extra damage on all of your bow attacks, barring the Crackling Bolt from Storm-Sworn, which is very good. Use this if you want even more raw damage, and don’t care for the Poison effect from the Vindictive Band.

Avowed Best Ranger Build Skills

The best abilities for a Ranger build in Avowed are Marksmanship, Steady Aim, and Staggering Shot.

With all of these ability choices, you will have used 35 skill points, freeing you up to take as many or as few Godlike powers as you would like. The recommended Ranger abilities are:

Ranger Tree Skills

The Ranger Skill Tree emphasizes precision, mobility, and stealth, catering to both ranged sharpshooters and agile melee fighters

• Tanglefoot (Rank 3) – Summon lingering entangling vines that Root nearby enemies in place for up to 8 seconds (12 at rank 3) and deal Poison Accumulation. Tanglefoot is a powerful, cheap, staple crowd control ability that can also deal damage.
• Evasive (Rank 2) – This is our main survival tool alongside Tanglefoot, reducing the Stamina cost of Dodge by 25% at Rank 1, 35% at Rank 2, and 50% at Rank 3.
• Survivalist (Rank 3) – Food restores 20% more Health and Essence and bonus effect durations are increased by 20%. At the end-game, rank 3 unlocks recipes for foods with powerful effects such as The Black Broth, which provides 5% Critical Hit Chance, +50% Critical Hit Damage, +10% Attack Speed, and +25% Stun, turning this Ranger build into a damage god!
• Shadowing Beyond (Rank 1) – Channel the Beyond, becoming Invisible and draining Essence until your next combat action. Use this ability to reposition easily in combat for better angles of attack and as a useful escape tool for the whole game.
• Marksmanship (Rank 3) – Increases your damage with bows and guns by 25% at Rank 1, 40% at Rank 2, and 50% at Rank 3. This skill is essential for improving your overall damage on any Ranger build for Avowed.
• Steady Aim (Rank 3) – Pick up rank 1 here as soon as possible to make your power attacks with bows slow time while holding down power attack.
• Staggering Shot (Rank 3) – One of our most important skills. Power Attacks with bows and guns deal +40% Stun at Rank 1, +70% Stun at rank 2, and +90% Stun at rank 3! This skill alone makes any Ranger build incredibly powerful at end-game, providing massive stun on each power attack. When your bow is fully upgraded as well, you can often stun lock an enemy with just one power attack.
• Deadly Poison (Rank 3) – Combined with Tanglefoot or the Vindictive Band accessory, the Arcane Archer can easily poison any target for increased damage, increase Poison Accumulation by 50% and reduce the Attack Damage of Poisoned enemies by 20% – great for bosses!
  

Wizard Skills

The Wizard Skill Tree is the primary source of elemental area-of-effect damage and battlefield manipulation. The recommended Wizard Tree skills are:

• Arcane Veil (Rank 3) – Arcane Veil provides 25% damage reduction, reflects projectiles and knocks back melee attacks. Cast this before entering a fight with a lot of enemies to gain a ton of defensive potential.
• Grimoire Mastery (Rank 1) – Use this to unlock Level 5 Grimoire spells, specifically Crackling Bolt.
• Harvest Essence (Rank 3) – The Essence fragments dropped by defeated enemies restores 2 times as much Essence at Rank 1, 3 times as much Essence at Rank 2, and 4 times as much Essence at Rank 3. This passive makes it very easy to maintain your Essence without potions or other items.
• Crackling Bolt (Rank 3) – Before you get the Storm-Sworn bow, Crackling Bolt is an incredible single and area of effect damage source. It deals a ton of damage, adds shock accumulation, and is basically unmissable. It also deals more damage than the version cast by Storm-Sworn, plus the ranks you get here will apply to your bow, increasing the total bounces between enemies (up to 8).

Fighter Skills

The Fighter Skill Tree for Avowed focuses on close-quarters dominance, durability, and crowd control using physical force.

• Armored Grace (Rank 2) – Use up to Rank 2 of Armored Grace to reduce the Stamina penalty of your armor.
• Toughness (Rank 2) – Extra HP is nice here, particularly on harder difficulty levels.
• Barbaric Shout (Rank 3) – Barbaric shout increases your Stun potential, plus gives you a huge shield for your health at Rank 2. You can use this before combat in many cases so the taunt effect will not matter and you can simply use the benefits.

Note: Technically, you can get 3 skill points back from Survivalist by crafting your food, then respecing. If you do this, consider additional abilities like Power Slide, Constant Recovery and the Bear Ally. Also, Godlike powers like Divine Thorn are not required for this build, so you can make any choices you prefer there.

While helpful early on, if you plan to use other ranged weapons like Pistols or wands, Quick Switch is not needed typically as the bow is just so powerful that you’ll never need to swap again to some other loadout.

Ranger Build Leveling Guide

Players can unlock 35 total talent points in Avowed as the game progresses, starting with 1 point per level at level 2, and including 1 bonus point for levels 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30.

Ranger Build Combat Tips

The Arcane Archer plays like a powerful hybrid between a Ranger and a Wizard which is an excellent thing to be.

In the early game (Dawnshore and Emerald Stair), the playstyle focuses on zoomed-in power attacks for easy critical hits with our bow, The Long Touch, while throwing in Crackling Bolts for great area of effect damage. The rhythm and flow of power attacking feels so thematic and fun, while the spells offer incredible room-clearing power. All of that power is complemented by peaceful nights at camp, cooking up buffet foods that the gods would be jealous of. Just be aware of using too much stamina with those power attacks.

By mid game to late game (Shatterscarp and Galawain’s Tusks) the Arcane Archer reaches for the sky and brings back lightning in the form of the Storm-Sworn bow, our signature weapon that causes power attacks to cast Crackling Bolt without costing essence, and without a cooldown. The effect of this is that your power attack spam alone now can clear rooms and even battlefields, and what it can’t clear it can stagger lock keeping your archer very safe.

With further talent points invested into Staggering Shot you will often be able to fully stun an enemy with one Power Attack, resulting in an instant special attack, firing off 4 arrows which are all guaranteed to critically strike the target. This is where stacking Critical Damage becomes even more powerful.

Before starting combat, you can pre-buff with Barbaric Shout for a bit of extra stun potential and a lot of extra effective health (damage shield). Early on, you can also use Arcane Veil for defense to reflect projectiles and stun melee attacks, and make sure to use your dodge to create space or back up when needed.

Once the healer is dead, focus on crowd control chaining melee enemies with a combination of freezes from Blizzard or Chill Blades, and roots from Tanglefoot. This combination can crowd-control powerful enemies almost indefinitely.

Against bosses, the pattern is very similar, but the fights are easier. Lead with Tanglefoot to stop the boss in their tracks, and then follow up with a Fireball for an initial burst of damage and to start stacking fire accumulation. Follow that Fireball with a Blizzard and Chill Blades, another Siphon, and then repeat. With this combination, bosses will have a very hard time moving or dealing any damage to you as long as Arcane Veil is up and reflecting any ranged projectiles from enemies.

In boss fights with adds, focus on crowd controlling as much as possible, using your Blizzard + Fireball combination to deal burst damage and take out the weaker enemies. Isolate the boss using Tanglefoot while you and your companions take out the adds first. Remember, it’s not the boss that kills you: It’s the adds.

Ranger Build Best Companions

1. Kai – This man is an absolute tank, which means he can take the pressure off of you allowing you to fire arrows at will.
2. Giatta – She heals you, shields you, and accelerates you. Her damage shield ability which also gives you bonus attack speed is generally the best, but her healing can be useful in a pinch as we don’t have much self-healing.

The Final Word

The Ranger build for Avowed is an absolute juggernaut when it comes to damage and finishing off enemies quickly. In the endgame, you can easily fully stun a target with one attack, then fully destroy their health bar with a barrage of critical strike arrows. This build looks fun and flashy, because it is! One of my favorite builds by far for Avowed – I hope you enjoy it!
