Avowed Rogue Build Summary: The Pirate Duelist
This Rogue build for Avowed excels at close-range and melee combat, freely switching between both depending on the situation. Your most powerful attack is the Godlike ability called Divine Thorn.
Divine Thorn Ability Effect: Grants a stealth attack against unaware enemies while crouched behind them. Summons a lance of energy that causes massive damage.
Divine Thorn is your backstab attack, and it does huge damage! This requires using the Shadowing Beyond ability to enter stealth, which is also fantastic, as enemies cannot detect you at all, but it does have a rather long cooldown.
That said, this Rogue Build can also fully stun enemies in one hit with pistols, then do massive damage with its upgraded melee Special Attack.

Who Should Play the Rogue Build for Avowed?
If you like Stealth mechanics and backstabbing enemies like many other fantasy RPGs, then you’ll love this rogue build for Avowed! In addition to stealth and huge backstabs, this build has a Pirate Duelist side, using dual Pistols to attack from range and quickly stun enemies, locking them in place and making them vulnerable to powerful melee special attacks.

Avowed Rogue Build Pros and Cons
The Rogue build for Avowed is incredibly powerful, especially at end-game.
Pros
- Use Stealth to one-shot enemies
- Use Pistols to fully stun enemies from range
- Your dual-wield Special Attack is insane!
- Good speed and mobility, defense, and escape options
Cons
- Weaker at the start of the game
- Medium armor and low health make you more vulnerable to attacks and death
- More vulnerable when surrounded by enemies and versus melee attackers
Best Race Options
With five playable races now available following the anniversary update, players have more options than ever to tailor their build. While the stat differences aren’t huge, your choice of playable race does have an impact early on in powering your build, plus you should consider height differences when in playing in first person.
The best playable race for the Rogue Build in Avowed is Aumaua, as they have the best early damage spike in the game thanks to +2 Might at the start of the game. Their large size and height also makes it easy to spot enemies at a distance.
Another solid option would be the Human Race for their combination of +1 Might and +1 Resolve, which provides a nice balance of pure damage (Might) and Maximum Stamina (Resolve), which lets you attack more before becoming exhausted.
Best Background Choice
Backgrounds in Avowed are primarily a role-playing tool. They shape how you experience the story and how NPCs react to your words, but they don’t create hard mechanical restrictions that matter beyond the early game. Your background also determines your starting stat allocation (you can change this before leaving character creation) as well as your starting weapon in the game’s tutorial.
In terms of roleplaying alignment, the Vanguard Scout is the best background for the Rogue Build in Avowed.
The default attribute layout provides Constitution, Dexterity, and high Perception without neglecting other stats, and the Vanguard Scout background frequently unlocks dialogue reflecting wilderness experience, tracking ability, ambush tactics, and practical battlefield knowledge. Where other backgrounds rely on book learning or social status, you speak from direct experience surviving in dangerous places.
Best Rogue Build Attributes
To maximize the Rogue Duelist build in Avowed, prioritize the following Attributes first:
- Might – The Might Attribute is the primary way players can increase their raw damage in Avowed. You’ll want to hit at least 10 Might for this build to increase your damage potential before hitting diminishing returns.
- Dexterity – Dexterity helps to increase your attack speed for the Rogue build, and also improves Pistol reloading, which helps with the Duelist / Pirate aspect of this build.
- Perception – Increases your Critical Hit chance for your basic attacks, plus extends the range of your Pistols, which is important to help build up stun versus enemies while maintaining a safe distance.
- Intellect – Your Intellect attribute increases your maximum essence, which expands the amount of time you can stay within Shadowing Beyond.

Rogue Build Best Weapons
The best weapons for a Rogue build in Avowed are The Emperor’s Reach, Umbral Needle, Magic Mistol, and Fair Play.
The Emperor’s Reach
- Base Effects
- Rightful Annexation: Killing an enemy gives you +10% Attack Damage and +10% Move Speed for 6 seconds.
- Bend The Knee: Special Attacks Stun nearby Kith
- Best Enchantment
- Triumph of Conquest: Killing an enemy restores Health and gives you +15% Attack Damage and +20% Move Speed for 8 seconds.
The Emperor’s Reach is one of the best dual-wield options for this Rogue build in Avowed, thanks to its bonus Health Restore, +15% Attack Damage, and 20% Move Speed buff – that’s a lot!
The Emperor’s Reach can be found in the Ancient Lakebed, located in the region of Shatterscarp.

- Greater Opening Strike: +15% Damage against enemies with full Health
- Best Enchantment
- Black Wind: Killing an enemy with a Special Attack gives you +30% Attack Speed for 10 seconds
The Umbral Needle is a powerful, unique dagger in Avowed with bonuses to Attack Speed and improved damage versus enemies with full health. Perfect for an Assassin playthrough!
The Umbral Needle can be found near the Ash Forest in the Galawain’s Tusks region, just west of the The Living Archives.

Magic Mistol
- Base Effects:
- Infused Shot – Power Attacks deal very high stun.
- Foe-Seeker – Bullets seek and target enemies.
- Best Enchantment:
- Do not upgrade
Magic Mistol is a very powerful pistol for this build, which inflicts high stun and also seeks out nearby enemies to target. You get this pistol fairly late in the game, but its huge stun potential is amazing. By combining this weapon with the Staggering Shot talent, you can fully stun basic enemies in just one hit, letting you quickly execute them by swapping back to your melee weapons and using your Special Attack.
I do not recommend upgrading this weapon with an enchantment, as it loses its single-target stun potential if you do.

Fair Play
- Base Effects:
- Recompense – Killing an enemy restores 5% of your Maximum Health and 25% of your Maximum Stamina.
- Vengeful Shot – Taunt and gain +100% Critical Hit Chance against enemies that Incapacitate of of your Companions.
- Best Enchantment:
- Turnabout – Killing an enemy restores 10% of your Maximum Health and 50% of your Maximum Stamina.
The Fair Play pistol is a solid second ranged weapon for this build because when you defeat enemies using it, you restore your Health and Stamina. This effect is increased with the Turnabout enchantment.

Rogue Build Best Armor
The best armor for a Rogue build in Avowed is the Vailian Breastplate, Berserker Boots, and Trickster’s Gloves. The Vailian Breastplate is a great option that can be obtained early, giving damage reduction and lots of bonus movement speed. Berserker Boots help by greatly increasing your Stamina Regeneration. Finally, the Trickster’s Gloves give a huge stat increase to Critical Damage, which greatly amplifies this build’s damage output.
Vailian Breastplate
- Bonus Effect:
- Lesser Bulwark: +2% Damage Reduction, +1 Additional Damage Reduction
- Enchantment:
- Quickness: +20% Move Speed
The Vailian Breastplate is the best chest armor for a Rogue build because you can get it early in Avowed, and it gives you a whopping 20% bonus to your movement speed. Movement is critical for the Rogue as it allows you to maneuver more quickly behind enemies to execute backstab attacks.
Vailian Breastplate is also medium armor, which gives a solid balance of Damage Reduction while also not losing too much Stamina and Essence.
The Vailian Breastplate is found in a chest in the governor’s bedroom in Fior.

Trickster’s Gloves
- Bonus Effect:
- +1% Critical Hit Chance
- Enchantment:
- Fatal Misdirection: +25% Critical Damage
The Trickster’s Gloves are the best gloves for a Rogue Build in Avowed, providing a huge 25% bonus to Critical Damage. This is amazing because it boosts our Critical Damage from backstabs and Special Attacks much, much higher!
The Trickster’s Gloves can be obtained from the Sand Sea Oasis location in the region of Shatterscarp. Dive to the bottom of the lake and loot the skeleton to obtain the gloves.

Berserker Boots
- Bonus Effect:
- -10% incoming Fire, Frost, and Shock Damage.
- Enchantment:
- Frenzied Strides: +100% Stamina regeneration rate
The Berserker Boots are the best option for the Rogue build in Avowed because they greatly increase your Stamina Regeneration rate. This allows you to attack more consistently and without needing to pause as often for Stamina to come back while in the middle of combat – especially important on builds that dual-wield weapons and are known to quickly run low on Stamina.
The Berserker Boots are found in the Galawain’s Tusks region at the Outcast Cave Camp.

Other Armor Options
Another useful armor for this Rogue build is Stelgaer’s Pride. If you take some damage greater than 20% of your health with this armor equipped, you get a free Barbaric Shout, which staggers nearby enemies and boosts the amount of stun your weapon attacks will inflict!

The Vailian Boots are another solid choice for a Rogue build in Avowed, thanks to their Dexterity boost and bonus Dodge Distance. Dexterity is one of the best stats for a Rogue build in Avowed, as this increases your attack speed. In addition, dodging is one of your best and most reliable tools to avoid taking damage and creating space versus melee enemies, so extra range on that dodge is very nice too!
The Vailian Boots can be found inside a small chest near the Riverside Cave in the region of Emerald Stair.

Best Rogue Accessories
The best accessories for a Rogue Build in Avowed are Cartographer’s Companion, the Ring of Pain Amplification, and the Vindictive Band. These accessories boost your raw stats, Critical Hit Damage, and provide a bonus Poison Effect.
Cartographer’s Companion
- Sanza’s Teaching: +2 Dexterity, +3 Perception
Cartographer’s Companion is the best Amulet for the Rogue build, thanks to providing 5 bonus attribute points overall: +2 to Dexterity and +3 to Perception. Both of these attributes are important for the Rogue build, specifically improving attack speed with dual-wield and pistol range.
The Cartographer’s Companion accessory can be looted from one of the corpses in Urvalnau’s Den in the Galawain’s Tusks region.

Ring Of Pain Amplification
- Critical Damage: +15% Critical Damage
The Ring of Pain Amplification provides the perfect complement to the Rogue build for Avowed, as we are always guaranteed Critical Hits when backstabbing a target or executing our Special Attack, plus this bonus stacks further with items like the Trickster’s Gloves.

Vindictive Band
- Laced Strike: Critical Hits deal Poison Damage
The Vindictive Band accessory gives an easy source of the Poison status effect damage by causing Critical Hits to also poison targets. The Poison effect can be further strengthened through the Ranger skill tree, increasing Poison damage done and even reducing the attack damage of targets who are poisoned, which is great on harder difficulties and versus bosses. It is also extremely easy to apply the effect, as your melee Special Attack and Backstab attack are guaranteed Critical Strikes.
Complete the Cabin Fever side quest in the Dawnshore region to obtain the Vindictive Band.

- Staggering Shot (Rank 3) – Power Attacks with bows and guns deal +40% Stun at Rank 1, +70% Stun at rank 2, and +90% Stun at rank 3! This skill alone makes any Ranged build incredibly powerful at end-game, providing massive stun on each power attack. When your Mistol is fully upgraded as well, you can often stun lock an enemy with just one power attack.
Fighter Skills
The Fighter Skill Tree for Avowed focuses on close-quarters dominance, durability, and crowd control using physical force. The recommended Fighter Tree skills are:
- Armored Grace (Rank 2) – Use up to Rank 2 of Armored Grace to reduce the Stamina penalty of your armor.
- Barbaric Shout (Rank 1) – Let out a fearsome roar that interrupts enemies and empowers you against larger foes. Your weapon attacks become Uninterruptible and deal higher Sun. This increases the stun of our Pistols, allowing us to more quickly fully stun a target to execute our dual-wield special attack.
- Devastating Criticals (Rank 3) – Critical Hits with melee weapons deal 30% more damage at Rank 1, 50% more damage at Rank 2, and 60% more damage at Rank 3.
- Dual Wield Mastery (Rank 1) – Your dedicated training has unlocked a more powerful Special Attack to perform on Stunned enemies while dual-wielding melee weapons. Use this to quickly execute stunned targets while using your primary dual-wield weapon loadout.
- Adrenaline (Rank 1) – When below 50% Health, your Attack Damage is increased by 25%. When below 25% Health, your Attack Damage is increased by another 25% and your Stability is increased by 20%.

Avowed Rogue Build Combat Tips
The Pirate Duelist plays like a mixture of a typical rogue build with the ranged damage options of a Gunslinger build. Players can jump into the shadows to execute powerful backstabs or dodge backwards and instantly stun enemies with precise pistol blasts.
Generally, players of this Rogue build should start combat by using Shadowing Beyond. Sneak into the group of enemies and look for the most vulnerable and desirable target that you can take down in one hit – typically a healer or wizard type. Move behind the enemy and use your Godlike backstab power to pull off a huge Critical Hit, likely killing them instantly.
From there, cast Barbaric Shout to increase your Stun potential and switch to your pistols. Finding your next target, fire off a few aimed shots (Steady Aim plus Staggering Shot are a great combo here) to fully stun them in 1-2 hits. Switch back to your dual-wield melee to unleash your empowered special attack (requires Dual Wield Mastery talent). You can also use Shadow Step here if you are too far away and want to close the distance faster while also reducing enemy Damage Resistance.
Switch back to your Pistols (which should be reloaded thanks to Quick Switch Rank 2) and stun your next target, executing them in the same fashion.
By now, Shadowing Beyond should be off cooldown, and you can enter stealth again for another powerful backstab.
As you can see, the combat loop for the Rogue duelist in Avowed is quite powerful and easily repeatable – and fun!
