Avowed Wand Build Overview
The Wand Build for Avowed is a fast-paced spell slinger, specializing in rapid-fire wand DPS and excellent crowd control skills.
This build emphasizes a high-risk, high-reward playstyle, allowing you to dish out some amazing wand damage very quickly, siphon back health when you get in trouble or even escape the fight completely by disappearing into the shadows.
This in-your-face spellcaster plays out like a magic machine gun, blasting enemies with magical effects and wearing down their health with poison and fire status effects. This completely unique take on a traditional spellcaster feels more like a magical gunslinger than a traditional wizard.

Who Should Play the Wand Build in Avowed?
You’ll like the Wand build for Avowed if you like the idea of a rapid-fire dual-wield mage blasting wand attacks left and right. This build plays like a bit of a Glass Cannon too – dealing tons of damage quickly but also ramping down fast when you get overwhelmed or your buffs wear out.
As a light armor-wearing wizard, you’ll need to play strategically, using abilities like Tanglefoot and Shadowing Beyond to control the battlefield and escape enemies. You’ll also need to depend on Companion support, particularly Kai as a tank to taunt enemies and draw their attention away.
Still, the Wand build for Avowed is one of the most impressive approaches to combat in the entire game as blasting dual-wield wands like a magic machine gun is one of the most unique combat loops you can enjoy, and its extremely powerful once fully upgraded.
Avowed Wand Build Pros and Cons
The Wand build for Avowed can deal a lot of damage quickly, but it’s not without its challenges.
Pros
- High DPS via rapid fire dual-wield wands
- Cheap Essence cost, doesn’t need a lot of skills or spells to be good
- Good battlefield control with Ice, Tanglefoot and Stun
- Ramps up damage quickly with status effects like fire and poison
Cons
- Lowest Health pool in the game
- Lowest damage reduction and armor in the game due to light armor
- Very gear dependent on upgrading your wand or buying Cruel Command
- Less defensive options if you get overwhelmed
Best Race Options
With five playable races now available following the anniversary update, players have more options than ever to tailor their build. While the stat differences aren’t huge, your choice of playable race does have an impact early on in powering your build, plus you should consider height differences when in playing in first person.
The best playable race for the Wand Build in Avowed is Aumaua, as they have the highest raw damage at the start of the game thanks to their +2 Might attribute which also increases the damage of spells and wand attacks.
Another solid option would be the Elf Race for their combination of +1 Perception and +1 Dexterity as this will help for wand usage, increasing max range and critical chance while also improving attack speed and cast speed.
Best Wand Build Background Choice
Backgrounds in Avowed are primarily a role-playing tool. They shape how you experience the story and how NPCs react to your words, but they don’t create hard mechanical restrictions that matter beyond the early game. Your background also determines your starting stat allocation (you can change this before leaving character creation) as well as your starting weapon in the game’s tutorial.
In terms of roleplaying alignment, the Arcane Scholar is the best background for the Wand Build in Avowed.
Throughout the game, Arcane Scholar frequently unlocks extra dialogue lines in conversations involving legal matters, arcane theory, historical events, and occult phenomena. When NPCs discuss ancient ruins, magical artifacts, or scholarly disputes, your background gives you informed responses that other origins lack.
High starting Perception helps to improve your range with Wands, and High Intellect allows you to cast more spells and use more abilities via increased Maximum Essence. If survivability concerns you, consider reallocating a point or two into Constitution before starting, but overall, the Arcane Scholar path works great for any magic-focused character.
Best Wand Build Attribute Points
To maximize your damage output and sustain, the best Attributes for a Wand build in Avowed are Might, Intellect, and Resolve.
- Might – The Might Attribute improves flat damage, including the damage of your basic wand attacks and spells. This is the primary attribute you should max out on a Wand build.
- Intellect – Intellect is your main source of increasing Essence (mana, basically) for this build, allowing you to cast more spells, plus it also increases Elemental Resistances.
- Resolve – Stacking Resolve on this build increases your Maximum Stamina, giving you a large enough pool to non-stop wand attack, which is actually a big stamina drain.
- Dexterity – Dexterity allows you to attack faster with wands, which is a nice bonus for this build.
- Perception – the Perception stat allows your ranged weapons to attack targets at a greater distance, which is also a helpful bonus for this build, though not a huge priority.

Wand Build Best Weapons
The best weapons for the Wand Build in Avowed are the Cruel Command wand and Whisper of Exiles wand. Both of these wands provide powerful and unique effects that make this build extremely strong when you dual-wield the wands together at the same time.
Cruel Command
- Base Effects:
- Cower Before Me – Power Attacks deal +75% Stun to enemies with full Health
- Burning Lash – Hits deal +10% bonus Fire Damage
- Best Enchantment:
- Forced Obeisance – Power Attacks deal +150% Stun to enemies with full health
Cruel Command is one of the strongest unique wands in Avowed, providing bonus Fire Damage plus huge bonus Stun potential if you Power Attack the target at full health. Using this weapon in combination with the Barbaric Shout ability means you can fully stun most basic enemies in one hit, assuming you attack them at full health.
Cruel Command can be purchased for 58,500 Coins at the Southern Warden Tower vendor near the Sallow Steppe region of Galawain’s Tusks.

Whisper of Exiles
- Base Effects:
- Flight in Autumn – A Full Combo attack deals low Frost Accumulation to nearby enemies
- Freezing Lash – Hits deal +10% bonus Frost Damage
- Best Enchantment:
- Exodus in Winter – A Full Combo Attack deals moderate Frost Accumulation to nearby enemies
The Whisper of Exiles is a unique wand that helps this build freeze enemies with bonus Frost Accumulation, allowing for easy CC and comboing spells while avoiding taking damage. Whisper of Exiles can be found in a treasure chest at the Great Sand Sea location in the Shatterscarp region.

Boethel’s Grimoire
- Corrosive Siphon
- Arcane Veil
- Parasitic Staff
- Blizzard
Boethel’s Grimoire is perfect for this build. It is available very early from a merchant in Paradis within the Emerald Stair zone, and all four spells can be incredibly useful for a Wizard build like this one. This is the quintessential early caster grimoire with access to the best defensive spell in the game, Arcane Veil, as well as the second-best crowd control spell, Blizzard, and the most important spell for this playstyle: Corrosive Siphon.
Other Weapons
The Minoletta’s Conduit Wand is a strong all-around choice with an excellent enchantment, extra range, extra damage, and the ability to build up shock accumulation.

If you’d like to use a Grimoire, perhaps as your secondary weapon, Boethel’s Grimoire is perfect for this build. It is available very early from a merchant in Paradis within the Emerald Stair zone, and all four spells can be incredibly useful for a spellcaster build like this one.

Other unique weapons, especially one handed weapons, can also work on this build. You want a pistol? Find or upgrade a nice one and take some pot shots in between spells (Check out our Gun Mage build for that!). You want to smack something with metal on a stick? Go for it, but melee weapons will be harder to us than ranged weapons due to this build’s weaker defense.
Other grimoire options to consider include, Aurochs Skin Grimoire, the Grimoire of Greater Elements if you prefer later Elemental spells or Eilara’s Grimoire which can be obtained in Galawain’s Tusks near the end of the game.
Wand Build Best Armor
The best armor for the Wand Build in Avowed is the Robes of Surpassing Brilliance, Trickster’s Gloves, and Berserker Boots. The Robes of Surpassing Brilliance are a nice upgrade over the Arcanist’s Gambeson, providing bonus AOE damage and Max Essence, while the Trickster’s Gloves provide a huge bonus of +25% Critical Damage which improves every single hit of our Wand Special Attack. The Berserker Boots are a must-have for dual-wielding wands as they increase your Stamina Regeneration by 100%.
Robes of Surpassing Brilliance
- Bonus Effect:
- Overseeing: +15% area of effect damage
- Enchantment:
- Innate Talent: +40 Maximum Essence
The Robes of Surpassing Brilliance are the best armor for a Wand build in Avowed due to the Overseeing effect, which grants +15% bonus area of effect damage, and the Innate Talent bonus, increasing Maximum Essence by 40. Both of these effects are excellent bonuses for any spell caster. You can find the Robes of Surpassing Brilliance just south of the Ancient Lakebed location in the Shatterscarp region. This is a light armor chest, so you will have less protection when compared to medium armor, unfortunately.

Trickster’s Gloves
- Bonus Effect:
- +1% Critical Hit Chance
- Enchantment:
- Fatal Misdirection: +25% Critical Damage
The Trickster’s Gloves are the best gloves for a Wand Build in Avowed, providing a huge 25% bonus to Critical Damage. This is amazing because it boosts our Critical Damage from our Special Attacks much, much higher!
The Trickster’s Gloves can be obtained from the Sand Sea Oasis location in the region of Shatterscarp. Dive to the bottom of the lake and loot the skeleton to obtain the gloves.

Berserker Boots
- Bonus Effect:
- -10% incoming Fire, Frost, and Shock Damage.
- Enchantment:
- Frenzied Strides: +100% Stamina regeneration rate
The Berserker Boots are the best option for the Wand build in Avowed because they greatly increase your Stamina Regeneration rate. This allows you to attack more consistently and without needing to pause as often for Stamina to come back while in the middle of combat – especially important on builds that dual-wield weapons as dual-wield wands will drain your stamina very fast!
The Berserker Boots are found in the Galawain’s Tusks region at the Outcast Cave Camp.

Other Armor options
For an early game armor option, consider equipping Stelgaer’s Pride. If you take some damage greater than 20% of your health with this armor equipped, you get a free Barbaric Shout, which staggers nearby enemies and boosts the amount of stun your weapon attacks will inflict!

The Warmage’s Boots are a nice option for this build giving a bonus +15 to Maximum Essence plus a chance to restore 20 Essence whenever we dodge.

The Wavebinder boots are also a nice option for spell casters in Avowed, increasing Maximum Essence and causing smaller hit reactions, which will improve your casting.

Best Wand Build Accessories
The best accessories for the Wand build in Avowed are the Cartographer’s Companion Amulet, Vindictive Band, and Ring of Pain Amplification. The Cartographer’s Companion amulet provides 5 total attribute points which makes this build much stronger overall, while the Vindictive Band applies an automatic poison debuff to enemies and the Ring of Pain Amplification increases our Critical Damage.
Cartographer’s Companion
- Sanza’s Teaching: +2 Dexterity, +3 Perception
Cartographer’s Companion is one of the best accessories in Avowed from a raw stats point of view, providing 5 total attribute points. Dexterity increases Attack Speed and Action Speed while Perception increases Critical Hit Chance and Wand Range.
The Cartographer’s Companion accessory can be looted from one of the corpses in Urvalnau’s Den in the Galawain’s Tusks region.

Vindictive Band
- Laced Strike: Critical Hits deal Poison Damage.
The Vindictive Band accessory gives another easy source of status effect damage by causing Critical Hits to also poison targets. This is extremely easy to take advantage of with the Wand build as we are constantly using our Special Attack, which guarantees every hit be a Critical Strike.
Complete the Cabin Fever side quest in the Dawnshore region to obtain the Vindictive Band.

Ring of Pain Amplification
- Critical Damage: +15% Critical Damage
A solid early-game option that can be used for the entire game is the Ring of Amplification, which provides a huge 15% boost to critical damage. Since critical hits are a key feature of this build, this ring ensures that every hit of our special attack lands with maximum impact.

Wand Build Best Abilities
The best skills for the Wand build in Avowed are Wand Mastery, Bounce, Blast, and Barbaric Shout.
Wizard Skills
As expected, Wizard abilities from the Wizard skill tree form the core skillset for this build and defines where you should spend most of your ability points. The recommended Wizard Tree skills are:
- Armored Essence (Rank 1) – Decreases the Essence penalty for Light and Medium armor by 15.
- Corrosive Siphon (Rank 3) – This is a powerful and often overlooked spell which adds a ton of utility and survival to the build. Corrosive Siphon allows you to trade essence for health and damage which is a fantastic trade. It also completely locks down most enemies by stunning them in place, and it can give you temporary health (a damage shield basically) when used while you are at full health. Cast this as often as you can – both for healing and to increase your Max Health via that temporary health boost.
- Arcane Veil (Rank 3) – Invokes a powerful arcane shield for 20 seconds that makes your spell casting Uninterruptible and increases Damage Reduction by 25% at Rank 1, reflects arrows or similar projectiles at Rank 2, and knocks back melee attackers at Rank 3.
- Blast (Rank 3) – Power Attacks with wands explode on impact, dealing reduced Stun and Explosive Damage to nearby enemies.
- Bounce (Rank 3) – Power Attacks with wands bounce to a nearby enemy, dealing reduced damage but retaining any elemental Accumulation. Bounce hits an addtiomal 2 enemies within range at Rank 3.
- Wand Mastery (Rank 3) – Increases damage with wands by 25% at Rank 1, 40% at Rank 2, and 50% at Rank 3.
- Scion of Flame (Rank 1) – Increases the amount of Fire Accumulation you deal by 20%.
- Spirit of Decay (Rank 1) – Increases the amount of Poison Accumulation you deal by 20%.
- Secret of Rime (Rank 1) – Boosting our frost accumulation means we will freeze enemies and crowd control them that much more often.
Fighter Skills
The Fighter Skill Tree for Avowed focuses on close-quarters dominance, durability, and crowd control using physical force. The most important skill here is Barbaric Shout which actually causes our wand attacks to deal much higher stun. The recommended Fighter Tree skills are:
- Toughness (Rank 1) – Increases your Maximum Health by 20%, which is a huge boost, especially for a spellcaster with a relatively low investment.
- Barbaric Shout (Rank 3) – Let out a fearsome roar that interrupts enemies and empowers you against larger foes. Your Weapon attacks become Uninterruptable and deal higher Stun at Rank 1. At Rank 2, you gain temporary health and taunt nearby enemies. Rank 3 increases the duration by 10 seconds. It’s best to cast this ability before combat starts if possible so you don’t taunt too many enemies.
- Retribution (Rank 1) – After taking damage from an enemy, your next attack within 5 secinds deals +70% of the original damage you received.
Ranger Skills
The Ranger Skill tree provides some crowd control and utility skills which will make the Wand build much stronger. The recommended Ranger Tree skills are:
- Tanglefoot (Rank 3) – This is a powerful and reliable crowd control skill, allowing you to lock down multiple enemies in place for up to 12 seconds, plus deal Poison Accumulation for a bonus damage source.
- Survivalist (3 ranks) – This is a slept-on ability with one particular recipe that can greatly increase the power of this build: The Black Broth. At rank 3 of Survivalist, you will be able to craft this fantastic beverage which increases Critical Hit Chance, Critical Hit Damage, Attack Speed and Stun – perfect for rapid firing wand blasts! Even better, once you craft a batch of this item you can respec the skills to something else like additional spells from the Wizard tree.
- Shadowing Beyond (Rank 1) – Channel the Beyond, becoming Invisible and draining Essence until your next combat action. Use this for emergencies to escape enemies surrounding you or to reposition to attack a high priority target.
- Deadly Poison (Rank 3) – The Poisoned Status deals increased damage to enemies at Rank 1, increases the amount of Poison Accumulation you deal by 50% at Rank 2, and reduces the Attack Damage of Poisoned enemies by 20% at Rank 3. Use this in combination with the Vindictive Band ring, which automatically applies poison when you critically strike an enemy.

Wand Build Combat Tips
Always start combat by casting Barbaric Shout, as this greatly increases the stun potential of your Wand power attacks. Combined with the unique Cruel Command wand this will fully stun most basic enemies in one shot, allowing you to quickly finish them off with your wand’s special attack. Try to kill 2-3 enemies as soon as possible using this combo while Barbaric Shout is active.
After this initial combo you should use Arcane Veil to help reduce or avoid damage as well as Tanglefoot to root enemies in place while you blast them safely from a distance. If an enemy breaks free or rushes towards you, cast Corrosive Siphon as this will stun them in place while also healing you or providing a large Temporary Health shield. Use companions for additional cover and damage such as Yatzli’s AOE spells or a Taunt from Kai to help control the remaining enemies.
Versus bosses, make sure to stun them as early as possible, as this lets you use your Wand Special attack for guaranteed Critical Hits. If using the Vindictive band, this will quickly stack Poison damage, and you also get to stack Ice and Fire damage by alternating both recommended wands. Be careful to manage your stamina as you can run out if you’re not paying attention.
Save just enough Essence to cast Shadowing Beyond if you get in trouble or need an escape tool.

Wand Build Best Companions
- Kai – Kai comes with two built in taunts, of which you should unlock both, as these can take the pressure off of you while you are low health or getting overwhelmed. His Fire and Ire ability also builds up a ton stun potential which can be very helpful versus bosses.
- Giatta – She heals you, shields you, and accelerates you. Consider using her Shield ability early on in combat to provide some extra protection and her Acceleration skill for when you really want to rapid fire those wand blasts!
