Avowed Wizard Build Overview
Wizards in Avowed are fast-paced spell slingers with huge area of effect damage and excellent crowd control. Our Wizard build cranks that even higher with even more powerful spells and gear, perfectly adapted to the Living Lands.
This build also emphasizes a high-risk, high-reward playstyle, allowing you to dish out some amazing elemental spell damage, harvest essence, and deal soul-sucking poison damage, which heals you back to full health with ease!
This in-your-face Wizard plays out like a big, bursty area of effect mage with strong crowd control. You’ll utilize the cold, hard damage of Chill Blades, Blizzard, and Freezing Pillar to freeze your enemies, and then the big and bursty fire spells like Fireball or shock damage via Crackling Bolt to shock and explode everything around you. When you aren’t freezing and shattering enemies, you’ll be siphoning their health to fuel your own. Arcane Scholar makes the most sense in terms of backgrounds, but you can choose this as you see fit.

Who Should Play the Wizard Build in Avowed?
Wizards in Avowed are masters of magic, able to cast powerful and flashy AOE spells that bring down the elements! You’ll like this build if you prefer a ranged approach to combat, dishing out area of effect damage like Ice, Fire and Shock. This build does better when you combine elements, so you’ll need to be strategic in terms of slowing and freezing enemies first with Ice, then bursting them down with Shock and Fire afterwards. You must also pay attention to the Essence Cost of your abiliies as you can quickly run out if you’re not paying attention.
Still, the Wizard build for Avowed is one of the most impressive approaches to combat in the entire game as there are many fantastic looking and powerful spells that you can experiment with to feel like a true god among the living, and this build can thrive on any difficulty setting including the Path of the Damned difficulty!
Avowed Wizard Build Pros and Cons
The Wizard build for Avowed can deal a lot of damage quickly, but its not without its challenges.
Pros
- Best AOE Damage and control spells in the game
- Most Essence and cost reduction – cast a lot of spells easily
- Good battlefield control with Ice
- Ramps up damage quickly with status effects like shock and fire
Cons
- Lowest Health pool in the game
- Lowest damage reduction and armor in the game due to light armor
- Your spells can completely miss with bad aim or timing
- Spell cooldowns mean you might be left with nothing to cast
Best Race Options
With five playable races now available following the anniversary update, players have more options than ever to tailor their build. While the stat differences aren’t huge, your choice of playable race does have an impact early on in powering your build, plus you should consider height differences when in playing in first person.
The best playable race for the Wizard Build in Avowed is Aumaua, as they have the highest raw damage at the start of the game thanks to their +2 Might attribute which also increases the damage of spells.
Another solid option would be the Elf Race for their combination of +1 Perception and +1 Dexterity as this will be helping for wand usage, increasing max range and critical chance while also improving attack speed and cast speed.
Best Background Choice
Backgrounds in Avowed are primarily a role-playing tool. They shape how you experience the story and how NPCs react to your words, but they don’t create hard mechanical restrictions that matter beyond the early game. Your background also determines your starting stat allocation (you can change this before leaving character creation) as well as your starting weapon in the game’s tutorial.
In terms of roleplaying alignment, the Arcane Scholar is the best background for the Wizard Build in Avowed.
Throughout the game, Arcane Scholar frequently unlocks extra dialogue lines in conversations involving legal matters, arcane theory, historical events, and occult phenomena. When NPCs discuss ancient ruins, magical artifacts, or scholarly disputes, your background gives you informed responses that other origins lack.
High starting Perception helps to improve your range with Wands, and High Intellect allows you to cast more spells and use more abilities via increased Maximum Essence. If survivability concerns you, consider reallocating a point or two into Constitution before starting, but overall, the Arcane Scholar path works beautifully for any magic-focused character.
Best Wizard Attribute Points
To maximize your damage output, survivability, and mobility, the best Attributes for a Wizard build in Avowed are Might, Intellect, and Dexterity.
- Might – Extra damage is extra damage, and some spells can’t critically hit, while no spells can be upgraded with materials, so this is your best bet for increasing your damage.
- Intellect – Intellect is your main source of increasing Essence (mana, basically) for this build, allowing you to cast more spells, plus it also increases Elemental Resistances.
- Dexterity – Dexterity allows you to cast your spells faster which can help you evade more attacks in fights, greatly increasing your survivability. It can also allow you to sling spells faster which can be marginally more damage.
- Resolve/Constitution – Constitution increases your Maximum Health, while Resolve increases Maximum Stamina. While both of these resources are helpful, they are a lower priority on this build which is focused purely on spell casting. Only a few points are necessary, with more Constitution recommended for higher difficulty playthroughs.

Wizard Build Best Weapons
The best weapon for a Wizard build in Avowed is the Whisper of Exiles wand and Boethel’s Grimoire. The Whisper of Exiles wand can easily build up Frost Accumulation, freezing a target in place, while Boethel’s Grimoire provides the best support spells you’ll need early on, including Arcane Veil and Corrosive Siphon for damage reduction and healing, as well as Parasitic Staff and Blizzard for damage.
Whisper of Exiles
- Base Effects:
- Flight in Autumn – A Full Combo attack deals low Frost Accumulation to nearby enemies
- Freezing Lash – Hits deal +10% bonus Frost Damage
- Best Enchantment:
- Exodus in Winter – A Full Combo Attack deals moderate Frost Accumulation to nearby enemies
The Whisper of Exiles is a unique wand that helps this build freeze enemies faster with wand damage, allowing for easy CC and comboing spells while avoiding taking damage ourselves. Whisper of Exiles can be found in a treasure chest at the Great Sand Sea location in the Shatterscarp region.

Boethel’s Grimoire
- Corrosive Siphon
- Arcane Veil
- Parasitic Staff
- Blizzard
Boethel’s Grimoire is perfect for this build. It is available very early from a merchant in Paradis within the Emerald Stair zone, and all four spells can be incredibly useful for a Wizard build like this one. This is the quintessential early caster grimoire with access to the best defensive spell in the game, Arcane Veil, as well as the second-best crowd control spell, Blizzard, and the most important spell for this playstyle: Corrosive Siphon.

Other Weapons
The Minoletta’s Conduit Wand is a strong all-around choice with an excellent enchantment, extra range, extra damage, and the ability to build up shock accumulation.

Other unique weapons, especially one handed weapons, can also work on this build. You want a pistol? Find or upgrade a nice one and take some pot shots in between spells (Check out our Gun Mage build for that!). You want to smack something with metal on a stick? Go for it, but melee weapons will be harder to us than ranged weapons due to this build’s weaker defense.
Other grimoire options to consider include, Aurochs Skin Grimoire, the Grimoire of Greater Elements if you prefer later Elemental spells or Eilara’s Grimoire which can be obtained in Galawain’s Tusks near the end of the game.
Wizard Build Best Armor
The best armor for the Wizard Build in Avowed are the Robes of Surpassing Brilliance, Ninagauth’s Gruesome Grasp, and Warmage’s Boots. The Robes of Surpassing Brilliance are a nice upgrade over the Arcanist’s Gambeson, providing bonus AOE damage and Max Essence, while the Ninagauth’s Gruesome Grasp gloves improve Ability cast speed and Frost Damage skill. The Warmage’s boots are best thanks to increasing our Maximum Essence, with a chance to restore Essence on dodge.
Robes of Surpassing Brilliance
- Bonus Effect:
- Overseeing: +15% area of effect damage
- Enchantment:
- Innate Talent: +40 Maximum Essence
The Robes of Surpassing Brilliance are the best armor for a Wizard build in Avowed due to the Overseeing effect, which grants +15% bonus area of effect damage, and the Innate Talent bonus, increasing Maximum Essence by 40. Both of these effects are excellent bonuses for any spell caster. You can find the Robes of Surpassing Brilliance just south of the Ancient Lakebed location in the Shatterscarp region. This is a light armor chest, so you will have less protection when compared to medium armor, unfortunately.

Ninagauth’s Gruesome Grasp
- Bonus Effect:
- +10% Ability Cast Speed
- Enchantment:
- Rymrgand’s Touch: +20% Frost Damage
The best gloves for the Wizard build in Avowed is Ninagauth’s Gruesome Grasp. This powerful armor piece is amazing for a spellcaster that focuses on Frost damage, with +20% Frost Damage bonus plus an extra +10% Ability cast speed, helping you to cast all of your spells even faster. Ninagauth’s Gruesome Grasp is a late game quest reward earned from the Homecoming side quest in the Galawain’s Tusk region.

Warmage’s Boots
- Bonus Effect:
- +15 Maximum Essence
- Enchantment:
- Arcane Step: Dodging has a 10% chance to restore 20 Essence.
The Warmage’s Boots are a very nice option for Spell casters in Avowed, not only boosting our Maximum Essence, which lets us cast more spells, but also restoring Essence potentially when we dodge. Dodging is a valid way to avoid damage on this build, so you’ll be dodging around anyway – might as well get some free Essence back in the process!

Other Armor options
The Death Knight Gloves provide 15% extra frost damage, which is a very good early game option for our Chill Blades and Blizzards, making these a great option for this build.

The Wavebinder boots are also a nice option for spell casters in Avowed, increasing Maximum Essence and causing smaller hit reactions, which will improve your casting.
Best Wizard Accessories
The best accessories for the Wizard build in Avowed are the Thirdborn Tira Nui Badge, Disciple’s Ring, and Ring of Elemental Balance. The Thirdborn Amulet provides a large boost to your Might Stat, allowing your spells to deal more damage, while the Disciple’s ring provides a huge boost to Maximum Essence, and the Elemental Balance ring increases our Fire, Frost, and Shock Accumulation.
Thirdborn Tira Nui Badge
- The Might of Thirdborn: +3 Might
This unique Trinket provides one of the largest stat bonuses in the game, +3 Might, helping to directly increase the damage of all of our spells. Keeping in mind the soft cap for attribute points, this will allow you to hit 10 Might very easily, then put more points into other helpful attributes such as Intellect for more Maximum Essence or Dexterity for faster cast speed.

Disciple’s Ring
- Greater Innate Talent: +60 Maximum Essence
The Disciple’s Ring is by far the best ring accessory for a Wizard build in Avowed, providing a massive boost of +60 total essence. Use this to maximize your Essence pool to cast more abilities before you need to recharge.

Ring of Elemental Balance
- Elemental Balance: +10% Fire, Frost, and Shock Accumulation
The Ring of Elemental Balance is perfect for a Wizard build as it will help you more quickly build up those powerful Elemental status effects of Fire, Frost, and Shock. Frost is generally the best as it will completely freeze enemies in place, allowing you to break them with a kick or wand power attack for bonus damage.

Wizard Build Best Abilities
The best skills for the Wizard build in Avowed are Blizzard, Crackling Bolt, Corrosive Siphon, and Harvest Essence.
Wizard Skills
As expected, Wizard abilities from the Wizard skill tree form the core skillset for this build and defines where you should spend most of your ability points. The recommended Wizard Tree skills are:
- Corrosive Siphon (Rank 3) – This is a powerful and often overlooked spell which adds a ton of utility and survival to the build. Corrosive Siphon allows you to trade essence for health and damage which is a fantastic trade. It also completely locks down most enemies by stunning them in place, and it can give you temporary health (a damage shield basically) when used while you are at full health. Cast this as often as you can – both for healing and to increase your Max Health via that temporary health boost.
- Chill Blades (Rank 3) – This is a fantastic early damage and crowd control combination spell with some fun area of effect possibilities at rank 3. It’s also very cheap with a low cooldown so we don’t need a grimoire to cast it often and effectively. I prefer this over other ranged options, such as Missile Salvo and Minor Missiles, for the frost effect.
- Arcane Veil (Rank 3) – Invokes a powerful arcane shield for 20 seconds that makes your spell casting Uninterruptible and increases Damage Reduction by 25% at Rank 1, reflects arrows or similar projectiles at Rank 2, and knocks back melee attackers at Rank 3.
- Grimoire Mastery (Rank 1) – Grimoire Mastery is a necessary evil in the build to unlock our best Elemental damage spells. It isn’t the most fun as a choice, but we do need it.
- Blast (Rank 1) – Power Attacks with wands explode on impact, dealing reduced Stun and Explosive Damage to nearby enemies. This means you can explode Frozen enemies, which is a niced ranged option, though Driving Kick is best for this if you are in melee range.
- Wand Mastery (Rank 3) – Increases damage with wands by 25% at Rank 1, 40% at Rank 2, and 50% at Rank 3.
- Blizzard (Rank 3) – Blizzard is a powerful area of effect damage spell that also happens to be excellent crowd control, thanks to frost accumulation.
- Fireball (Rank 2) – With Fireball, you will be slinging giant explosions to clear out rooms all day. Big damage, big fire accumulation, and 25% faster cooldown thanks to that third rank even without a grimoire.
- Crackling Bolt (Rank 3) – Conjures a powerful bolt of electricity that bounces between multiple enemies and the environment, dealing high Shock Accumulation and Stun. Bounces up to 8 times at Rank 3, drastically increases damage and stun potential.
- Harvest Essence (Rank 3) – The Essence fragments dropped by defeated enemies restore 2 times as much Essence at Rank 1, 3 times at rank 2 and 3 times at Rank 3. Use Rank 3 to max out your Essence restore, making sustain mid-fight much easier.
- Secret of Rime – 1 ranks – Boosting our frost accumulation means we will freeze enemies and crowd control them that much more often.
Note: more Spells can be taken here such as Arcane Seal or Meteor Shower, after using Survivalist Rank 3 to craft the best consumables, then respecing.
Fighter Skills
The Fighter Skill Tree for Avowed focuses on close-quarters dominance, durability, and crowd control using physical force. The recommended Fighter Tree skills are:
Take these skills from the fighter tree later in the build once your core spells and passives are online (After level 15):
- Toughness (Rank 1) – A healthy Battlemage is a living Battlemage. The more maximum health you can hold, the more you can cast with Blood Magic.
- Constant Recovery (Rank 1) – Any health recovered from taking damage from an enemy is health you can use to cast spells. Perfect, and so powerful.
- Driving Kick (Rank 3) – A powerful kick that breaks through enemy Blocks, dealing damage and launching enemies through the air. Rank 2 increases the damage of this skill and Rank 3 creates an area of effect and deals Explosive Damage, which can shatter Frozen enemies.
Ranger Skills
The Ranger Skill Tree emphasizes precision, mobility, and stealth, catering to both ranged sharpshooters and agile melee fighters. The recommended Ranger Tree skills are:
- Survivalist – 3 ranks – This is a slept on ability with one particular recipe that can greatly increase the power of this build: Wizard Mind Bomb. At rank 3 of Survivalist, you will be able to craft this fantastic beverage (and Runescape reference!) that will decrease your cooldown and cost of your core Grimoire spells by 25% which is very powerful.
- Shadow Step (Rank 1) – Step into the Beyond, reappearing behind your enemy. Just one rank here in the Ranger tree is enough to create a fast and cheap survival tool, letting you teleport behind enemies to wreak more havoc with spells, or just avoid attacks for longer.

Wizard Build Combat Tips
First and foremost, try to keep Arcane Veil up as often as possible. This mitigates a ton of damage, and makes fights much less risky. Casting this at the start of a fight makes the most sense.
Against packs of enemies, it is best to send Kai in to taunt enemies and gather them together and then throw out a Blizzard or Chill Blades to try and freeze a few enemies. Once they are frozen, you can cast Crackling Bolt or Fireball for AOE damage.
Against single targets and bosses, alternate casting Chill Blades and Blizzard to keep them frozen solid, then use Driving Kick or a Heavy wand attack (with the Blast passive) for Explosive Damage – this deals bonus damage versus frozen targets.
Also, don’t forget to cast Corrosive Siphon whenever possible. While this ability heals you very quickly, I find it better to use while you are at full health because it then gives you a large Temporary Health pool which is always an advantage in combat, especially on a Wizard build where we don’t have a lot of health to start with.

Wizard Build Best Companions
- Kai – This man is an absolute tank, which means he can take the pressure off of you while you are low health from slinging all those blood magic spells. That makes him almost perfect.
- Giatta – She heals you, shields you, and accelerates you. Any extra health is extra spells, and the shielding can help keep you alive even when your actual health bar is quite low thanks to Blood Magic which ignores temporary health.
The Final Word
The Wizard build in Avowed is one of the most powerful playstyles in the game, offering huge damage plus surprising defense and crowd control options! I hope you found this guide helpful and be sure to check out the rest of our Avowed content linked below!
